      South Reims

      8. mai, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

When I left home at 09.15 this morning the temperature was 9c. The journey to the euro tunnel train was as expected. Busy and the roads are typical of England these days with plenty of pot holes even on motorways.
In contrast the beautiful almost empty roads of France are a delight to ride down.
I'm just south of Reims in a Campanile hotel.
While waiting for the train in England I met two bikers who had ridden from North Wales. Amazing coincidence, first they stopped at the same service station on the motorway and I never saw them on the road and now they have just parked the bikes next to mine at the hotel.
Tomorrow is a long ride to lake Constance in Germany near the Swiss border.

      Rheims

      7. mai 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Dreich day here - the rain caught up with me- although the worst of it was before and after. 70k of cycling feels ( and should be) a rest day, so time to have a brief "degustation " of the fizzy stuff on the way through Epernay. Washing it down with the French equivalent of a sausage roll arguably was a bit insulting. Either way, after a glass of fizz everything went a bit pear shaped: my cycle computer stopped route finding for me, the rain started and then I had a hill! Haven't seen one of those since the Pyrenees!! Unfortunately it spat me out on to a busy A road in foggy wet conditions: not nice cycling. Was that my "champagne moment"? A laborious detour allowed me to experience the industrial estates on the outskirts of Rheims.😞 I'd started to question my decision to take this more urban route, but after a visit to the amazing Pommery champagne cellars- and the even more amazing -and huge- Rheims cathedral, it all seemed to make sense. First puncture today - notice the hissing at the doorstep of the hotel. Quick bit of glass removal and tubeless shoogling seems to have it fixed🤞Les mer

      Reims Stadtführung

      28. oktober 2019, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Day 24 - Hermonville to Reims

      14. mai 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The overcast day started with forest walking - fabulous. I shared the path with joggers, their dogs, cyclists, dirt bikes, quad bikes and one hiker (pilgrim status: unlikely - we had no common language and he had what appeared to be a day pack, with poles). The going was slow, with all the lefting and righting to find the best path through the puddles. The day ended with a lovely canal walk (Canal de l'Aisne a la Marne) into Reims. My accommodation crisis was solved by the tourist office (luckily, they were open on a Sunday), who managed to get me accommodation for tomorrow night. I had been unable to obtain accommodation for the next two nights and this way, I walk a little longer tomorrow and divert from the path for the following day - but it gets me where I need to be in two days time. I got a pilgrim stamp at the Cathedral in Reims and met an Australian pilgrim there; Sue, from Queensland. I did have a brut champagne last night at the Pizza place (I felt too daggy to try the French restaurant), and the hotel I'm in now has a vending machine where I have a choice of two champagnes (€40 or €50) however, I had my beer at the Earnest Hemingway Cafe and that will do me. Oh, and I broke Find Penguins tonight by trying to upload 11 photos. The only way I could get the app to work was to buy a premium membership - beware. P.S. those spots in that pond are frogs, it was magic to hear the croaking.Les mer

      Pommery

      28. oktober 2019, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      Prost

      20. september 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

What a fabulous day! Cycled to railway station in Chalons en Champagne, bikes on train to Reims and cycled to Taittenger Champagne House.
Tour of the 4km underground caves where the bottles are hand riddled and stored to mature into the bubbly stuff we all know and love. Then up to the surface for a Tatty Tasting - Yummy!Les mer

      Reims 22 miles

      30. juli 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I have briefly mentioned before my two mates who are travelling with me. We are inseparable. Before the trip we got on fine but over the past couple of weeks I have not been getting on too well with one of them. We start each day on good terms, and over breakfast, on those days I get such a thing, nothing is said but as soon as we get going the grumbling starts and it just seems to get louder as the day wears on. On the long days we are pretty much shouting at each other by the time we finish. However today, for the first time, we were all quite chummy for ages. I think, and hope, that our relationship may just have turned a corner. It was a 22-miler so plenty of time to fall out. Only 15 miles tomorrow. Surely we can stay civil to each other for that long. I feel that I have done my best, always smear on Compeed anti-blister stick before we set off and slather on plenty of CCS cream after the night-time shower. He has two main complaints. The wee blister on the end of my second toe has not changed much but isn’t so painful nowadays. The large blister which was on the ball of my foot in line with the second toe seems to have moved along a little each day leaving fairly robust, or numb, skin behind. Just thought you would like to know.

The bearded pilgrim, who I met in Canterbury, still the only other pilgrim I have met, was very vocal in declaring that the French were very rude to him. He had been swore at, shouted at and even spat on. He thought it was a Brexit thing. “They hate the British now.” It seemed to be his abiding memory of travelling across France. Made me a little nervous as I was about to spent 6 weeks doing just that. I am still less than half way across France but I haven’t come across any bad feeling at all. In fact it is remarkable how almost everyone I pass acknowledges me with a “Bonjour” and/or a wave. Possibly a haircut and a shave might have been a good idea for him.

A very curious coincidence occurred as I wandered into Reims. I spend most of my walking time listening to Desert Island Discs as I have mentioned before. Got through nearly 300 of them. This one was Christina Lamb, journalist, who told a story about meeting a politician from Pakistan called Benazir Bhutto and I noticed that I was walking through a park dedicated to the same person. What are the odds on that I wonder?

In a sort of Travelodge hotel tonight and the only practical eatery nearby was a Buffalo Grill. Didn’t manage to finish my burger dinner but they did give me a litre carafe of chilled tap water that was lovely.

      Aftenhygge i Reims

      18. april, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Smuk aften i Reims.Les mer

      Reimes

      28. august 2019, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
