Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval: A Lovely Place

We spent our last full morning yesterday wandering around the lovely little mountain town of Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval. This is probably the only place I’ve been that I felt I most at home at - no crowds, gorgeous mountain scenery with sweet old buildings, lots of hiking trails … my kind of place. That being said, my home in Colorado’s mountains awaits, and today that’s where we are heading - home. Au revoir!Read more

Day 29
I hiked to the end of the world!

We had the immense delight of spending some time in the French Alps hamlet of Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval today, and then hiking the End of the World trail near the Cirque du Fer a Cheval. What a magnificent place to hike, with numerous waterfalls all around. The trail ended with a steep climb to the base of a line of mountain ridges that form the border between France and Switzerland. The cirque is part of the Sixt-Passy National Nature Preserve and was a wonderful place to enjoy a simple lunch of cheese, baguette and apples. A long stretch of warm weather delayed the arrival of fall-like temps, so the mostly deciduous forests in these mountains - so different than Colorado’s mountains of predominantly coniferous forests - are just showing a hint of color. Today was really the first day since arriving in Europe a month ago that felt like fall - which is one of my top four favorite seasons.Read more

Our last day in the Alps. The Griesbachs are continuing their holiday in Italy and we are going to visit Dijon and the beautiful Normandy. However before we said good by we enjoyed one last french breakfast together and a magnificent waterfall "Cascade du Rouget 🌊".Read more

Samoëns - Refuge Alfred Wills (18,7 km/ 5:55 Stunden⬆️1273m!)
Der erste Teil der heutigen Etappe ging relativ entspannt am Fluss Giffre entlang, der sehr beliebt zum Rafting zu sein scheint.
Spannend wurde es in den Ancienne Gorges des Tines, einer schönen, aber engen Schlucht, die wir mit Hilfe von Eisenleitern und Drahtseilen durchquert haben.
Später wurde der Aufstieg natürlich steiler, denn irgendwie mussten wir ja die Höhenmeter machen.😅 Zwei wunderschöne Wasserfälle konnten die Strapazen (vor allem auf Grund der Hitze, obwohl es heute viel Schatten gab) nicht ganz aufwiegen. Doch irgendwann hatten wir den Collet d’Anterne (von wo man schon mal einen schneebedeckten Gipfel des Mont-Blanc-Massivs sehen konnte) und dann das schöne, große Hochplateau mit Almwiesen (und vielen Murmeltieren) und das Refuge Alfred Wills (1806m) erreicht. Wir können wie etliche andere Wanderer biwakieren, im Bergbach „baden“ und schließlich ein 3Gänge-Menü einschließlich interessanter Geschichten über den Namensgeber und Freundschaftsschnaps vom Hüttenwirt genießen.😌Read more

Jura in die Alpen

Nachdem wir gestern schon zwei Stunden durch das wunderschöne französische Jura fuhren, welches uns an das Allgäu erinnerte, und wir nur für die Übernachtung über die Schweizer Grenze fuhren, ging es heute weiter durch das französische Jura. Auf dem col de la faucille hatten wir ein wunderschönes Panorama über Genf, den Genfer See und einen kleinen Blick auf den Montblanc. Danach ging es ins Tal, durch Genf und wieder nach Frankreich rein um im wunderschönen Sixt-Fer-a-cheval zu enden. Dies ist ein Tal welches von drei Seiten von hohen Klippen umgeben ist und treffenderweise im bout du monde, dem Ende der Welt endet. Hier hatten wir nach Tipp von Esthers Arbeitskollegen einen wunderschönen Campingplatz mit Bergpanorama gefunden.Read more

Samonës Market and " Bergsee"

We walked early in the morning to our local town and enjoyed market day. After lunch we cooled off at one of the mountain lakes. The lake was so clear and so so cold we all went in very quickly but nothing is stopping Hans from being in the water for ages 🥶.
Sadly when returning to the carpark we found both cars being damaged and scratched on the sides which leaves a bitter taste for the trip and feelings being in France as it feels like it was against tourists.
In the evening we tried to make the taste better with local food .Read more

Nach einer kalten Nacht wachten wir zu einem wunderschönen Bergpanorama auf und wanderten am Morgen in die Schlucht hinein. Das funktionierte gut mit den Tragen, die Kinder machten auch super mit.
Belohnt wurden wir von dutzenden Wasserfällen und leeren Wanderwegen, die Massen kamen erst, als wir schon fast wieder am Zeltplatz waren. Den Rest des Tages genossen wir auf den Campingplatz.Read more

Alpine Botanical Garden Jaÿsinia

After yesterdays being on top of the world 😜... well almost, it was difficult to top this amazing day.
We visit “Outstanding Garden of France”, the Alpine Botanical Garden Jaÿsinia, with its 2400 species of plants, offers a poetic walk through the alpine flora and plants of the mountains and where we also got reworded with an amazing view over Samonës.
At Lunch we enjoyed a traditional Creperie and finished the day by visiting the Gorge we went true with the Raft and cooled down in the pool.

Clives 54 Birthday 🎈🎂🎉

A special Day as it was Clive's 54 Birthday 🎂🎈. We celebrated of course by going rafting with a local company. Very exciting also for Hugo as he has never done something like this on moving water 🌊. The highlight was when our boat got stuck and we all had to climb out on a tiny rock in the middle of this fats running river. The reason was a french passenger who was in our boat and he fall out 2 times no one got heard ( i only lost my water shoe) and it was an adventure. We also enjoyed jumping from cliffs into the river but I never do it without glasses 🕶️ again as I could not see were to swim too back .
We finished the day off with a nice coffee in town and a very traditional french meal . It was a wonderful day. Happy Birthday 🎈 🎂 Clivie we wish you from the bottom of our hearts just the best and lost and lost of more happy memories just like this ❤️.Read more

Annecy

We arrived yesterday at 18.00 just enough time to get into the pool and celebrate with a very delicious Pizza, which was sold very close to our Holiday House. We than finished this full day with a little evening walk along the beautiful Mountain River.
The next morning was a very early morning to drive to the most beautiful Town in the french Alps " Annecy". Sadly the morning was very grey and wett but by lunch time the sun 🌞 came out and it was just perfect to walk along the market ( bought lots of local delicious food) and enjoyed this beautiful old Town.Read more
