  • Arriving at Heligan Campsite

    2023年2月20日, イングランド

From the Eden Project, we drive the short distance to Heligan Caravan and Camping Park - home for the next five nights.

We checked in with the very friendly reception staff and went to find our pitch. We set up quite quickly. We decided to put the canopy up because, whilst it's not likely to be warm enough to sit out, it's good to have outside space - it reduces the clutter inside!

Having set up, we went to explore. First impressions of the site are very good indeed. The shower blocks, wash-up area, and laundry room are the best we've ever seen!! There's even a drying room where, for a £1 refundable deposit, you can have a cage locker to dry your towels, etc. Brilliant!!

We found the gate to the Lost Gardens of Heligan that we are visiting tomorrow and located the convenient bus stop 🚏 for buses 🚌 into Fowey and Mevagissey.

The site is well maintained and set out with views over the adjacent countryside and down to the sea 🌊.

A lovely place to stay for a few days!

  • The Lost Gardens of Heligan

    2023年2月21日, イングランド ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We had a bit of a lie-in this morning before our timed visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan at 11am. It was another dull and drizzly day, but we didn't let that put us off!! 😀

The original Heligan Manor was built on the site in the 1200s. Since then, the house has undergone many changes. It is now in private hands and not accessible to the public.

The gardens, on the other hand, have been fully restored and attract tens of thousands of visitors every year. They were first laid out by Henry Hawkins Tremayne in the 1700s. Subsequent generations of the Tremayne family added to and improved the gardens over the next 200 years.

During and after World War I, the gardens unfortunately fell into disrepair. In August 1914, 13 Heligan staff signed their names on the wall of the Thunderbox Room. They all went off to war. Only 4 survived. None of them returned to Heligan.

In 1990, John Willis, the great great nephew of the last resident squire, Jack Tremayne, inherited Heligan and invited his friend, Tim Smit (later of the Eden Project fame), to view the estate with him. As they picked their way through the undergrowth and fallen trees (made worse by recent storms), they came across the Thunderbox Room and the signatures of the young men. They vowed to restore the 'Lost Gardens' in their name.

So the work began. It continues to this day. It has been described as 'the garden restoration project of the century'!

Obviously, it's only February, so we weren't seeing the gardens at their best, especially the flower and vegetable gardens. However, we spent a very enjoyable four hours or so wandering through the different areas and exploring the Lost Valley and the Jungle. The latter was particularly interesting, especially as we crossed the Burma rope bridge!

  • The regenerative farm at Heligan

    2023年2月21日, イングランド ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

As well as the gardens, Heligan is also home to a groundbreaking farming project. They use regenerative grazing to help combat climate change. This is a way of moving animals around the estate so that they replicate the behaviour of wild grazing animals. Different species are kept together as would happen in the wild - on the plains of the Serengeti, for example. The Heligan staff call their mixed groups of sheep and cattle 'flerds', a cross between flocks and herds! I love this!! ❤️

We watched a film 🎥 during our visit to the Lost Gardens, which explained the ethos of the farm and why they are so keen on rare breeds. It was fascinating!!

Look out for a photo 📸 of the happiest pig ever! 😂

  • A bus ride to Fowey

    2023年2月23日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

After a housekeeping day on site yesterday when we got all the laundry done and did some jobs on the van, this morning we caught the number 24 bus from just outside the site and went all the way to Fowey. It was a cold 🥶 morning, but at least it stayed dry.

We had a walk around the town, and I explored the local church, which is dedicated to St Fimbarrus, or St Finn Barr. He is believed to have been the Bishop of Cork from 610 to 630, who stopped off in Fowey on his pilgrimage to Rome.

Once we'd seen the town, we called at a pub for a cider before catching the bus back. On the way, we broke our journey at Asda in St Austell to pick up a few bits we needed.

  • A look around Mevagissey

    2023年2月24日, イングランド ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We caught the 11.05 bus down to Mevagissey this morning. It's only a 50-minute walk🚶‍♀️, but it's along a busy road with no pavement, so we opted for the bus instead.

Mevagissey is a pretty fishing village that attracts countless visitors in high season. It was lovely to be there in February and have the place almost to ourselves. We had a wander around the narrow streets and spent time exploring the picturesque harbour. Like my Dad, I've always loved looking at and photographing fishing boats 🚢! I think the last time I was in Mevagissey was on a family holiday as a child.

Having walked as much as we wanted, we went into the Fountain Inn, the oldest pub in the village, and had fish 🐟 and chips 🍟 for lunch.

Later, we went to Asda again to buy supplies for our next stop.

  • A visit to Caerhays Castle

    2023年2月25日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

We packed up to leave Heligan this morning after a lovely five-night stay. We had to be off site by 10.30am and couldn't check in to our next site until 1pm, so we decided to visit Caerhays Castle en route.

The castle is a semi-castellated country house built in 1808 on the site of an ancient manor. The castle doesn't open until March 13th, but the gardens are fully open. It's still only February, so our expectations were pretty low. However, we were blown away by the amount of colour in the gardens!!

Caerhays had a huge number of camellias and rhododendrons and is home to a world-famous National Magnolia Collection. We had a very enjoyable couple of hours wandering around the estate. We can only imagine what a riot of colour the gardens will be in a couple of month's time!

  • Driving to our next campsite

    2023年2月25日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

From Caerhays, we drove to our next campsite. It wasn't far, but I had planned a route to include a couple of National Trust beaches and a castle. In the event, we didn't find the castle, despite the satnav telling us,'You have arrived'!! And the beaches were down really narrow lanes inaccessible to Bertha!

We did find a few beauty spots but decided to cut our losses and head straight to camp! 😀

  • Checking in at Treloan Campsite

    2023年2月25日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

We arrived at Treloan Campsite mid-afternoon and met Debs, the owner. She directed us to our pitch and explained that the main facilities are closed for refurbishment. There are alternative limited facilities available.

The site is in a great location right by the sea 🌊. We have sea views from our pitch. The weather was bright but very windy. The wind was blowing straight off the sea, so we decided to pitch Bertha side on to give us some shelter. We put the canopy up but supported it halfway so that it would stay up in the wind!

Once we had set up, we went for a walk around the site. It was bitterly cold in the wind, but the views are amazing! I have to say, we were not impressed with the facilities - they weren't the cleanest, and there was zero heating in there! I'm not looking forward to having a shower!! It was disappointing, especially after the site we'd just left! And this place is £6.50 a night more than Heligan!!

  • Gerrans Parish Church

    2023年2月26日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

This morning, we went to catch the 11.21 bus to St. Mawes. We were a few minutes early, so I was able to explore the pretty village church.

St. Gerran's Church is a local landmark. It stands on the brow of a hill overlooking the sea. The steeple was added in the 17th century at the request of local fishermen to help guide them home.

The church is dedicated to Gerrans, a chief who was known in the Celtic world from Wales to Brittany.

  • St Mawes

    2023年2月26日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

St Mawes is where my Mum and Dad came on their honeymoon in May 1964. They stayed at the Ship and Castle Hotel, which still stands in prime position on the quayside.

We visited the place with them about 20 years ago to recreate a photo taken back in the sixties. We didn't stay long and, if I'm honest, St Mawes didn't make much of an impression on me. This time, despite the cold temperature, the sun was shining and we spent a few hours exploring. I think it's now my new favourite place in Cornwall!!

We enjoyed the number and variety of independent shops and bought some fig and date and some blood orange 🍊 balsamic vinegars. We also went to the castle 🏰 where we joined English Heritage on a '15 months for the price of 12' deal. I climbed the hill to explore the very simple parish church. We admired the seafront properties and imagined a lottery win to be able to afford one! 🤣😂

  • St Mawes Castle

    2023年2月26日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

St Mawes Castle is located a pleasant 10 - 15 minute walk from the village centre along the sea wall. It is one of the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal artillery fortresses, and the most elaborately decorated. It was built between 1539 and 1545 as part of a chain of forts to counter an invasion threat from Catholic France and Spain. St Mawes would have guarded the important anchorage of Carrick Roads.

The castle's highlights include its charming clover-leaf shape, which was originally surrounded by octagonal defences, and the Latin inscriptions in praise of King Henry VIII and his son Edward VI.

There are stunning sea views from the top of the castle keep and beautiful grounds which stretch down to the Fal Estuary.

  • St Mawes Church

    2023年2月26日, イングランド ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

The name of the village of St Mawes comes from Saint Maudez, a Breton saint. There was a chapel here dedicated to him. We know it existed in the early 1400s, and it remained in use until the reign of Elizabeth I when it was abandoned. From that time until 1884, there was no chapel for the people of St Mawes.

The new church was opened by the Bishop of Truro Dr George Wilkinson. It was built in the simple Early English style and consists of a chancel, nave, porch, and bell turret. It was built of local stone with facings of St Stephen’s granite.

As I walked around, I was struck by the glorious sunshine streaming in through the simple stained glass windows - beautiful!

St Mawes is in the parish of St. Just in Roseland.

  • St Mawes to Falmouth ferry

    2023年2月27日, イングランド ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

On what would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday, we were up early yo catch the 8.59am bus back to St Mawes. We were getting the St Mawes to Falmouth ferry ⛴️ to explore the other side of the water. We had intended to visit the National Trust gardens at Glendurgan and Pendennis Castle 🏰 while we were over there, but found out that both are closed on a Monday!!

Regardless, we decided to go to Falmouth anyway.

It was another bright, sunny 🌞 morning, but rather cold 🥶 out on the water! We were the only passengers on the Duchess of Cornwall ferry, so we're able to move around the boat 🚢 taking photos 📸 during the 25-minute crossing.

  • A walk around Falmouth

    2023年2月27日, イングランド ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

We spent a very pleasant couple of hours wandering around Falmouth. All we bought was a pale green hooded lightweight jacket for Mark to take to Africa.

When we'd had enough walking, we saw a blackboard outside a pub that said, 'If you've got the grub, we've got the pub'. So, we went in for a cider and ate the packed lunch we'd brought with us! What a great idea!! 😀もっと詳しく
