      Skógafoss

      July 5, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

One of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland Skógafoss was a world away from the secluded off the beaten track waterfalls of Northern Iceland! Set in the middle of a campsite this amazing waterfall was one of the most impressive we had seen, purely because of how high it was and how close you could get to it.

The video doesn’t do it justice but it was such an amazing sight!

      Day 6

      July 20, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Final full day, we fly home tomorrow! We packed our bags and said goodbye to the Silica hotel and headed out on our “bonus day” adventure. Two of our participants were celebrating their 10 year anniversary this month and invited whoever wanted to stay an extra day along to capture it. Although every shoot we did was a blast, this one came with alll the emotion since instead of models it was two people I have come to love deeply. On the very first day when they introduced themselves, KC and Aaron said “we’ve had a hard life, and we love to be open with our struggles so others feel comfortable sharing theirs and we all feel less alone”. And that’s exactly what they did all week long. They created an environment where everyone was vulnerable, friendships went beyond surface level and manyyyyy tears were shed. It was quite beautiful to witness the impact 2 people can have on a group, and this workshop wouldn’t have been the same without them ❤️

It was extra special that I then got to serve as their day of coordinator- calming their nerves, holding the bouquet, adjusting the dress, managing the crowds who wanted to take photos of them, etc. Their vows brought us all to tears and dancing on a cliffside to their first dance song from a decade ago was the icing on the cake.

We celebrated with a delicious dinner and I conducted “exit interviews” with each participant to get their feedback on the week. Their words brought tears to my eyes- from their gratitude to the impact the week had on them emotionally and professionally. I feel beyond grateful to have played a small role in bringing Ellie’s vision to life. Our strengths (and weaknesses or as we call them “opportunities”) really balanced one another out and made for a beautiful partnership.

On our way into dinner I spotted a “playground” with a zip line and we ended the night all taking turns and laughing hysterically. We said our tearful goodbyes and a smaller group of us made our way to the air bnb where we are staying tonight before flying out tomorrow afternoon.

      Skógafoss Waterfall

      August 12, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Supposedly, there is a chest of gold buried under the Skógafoss. It's 60 m high, and you can walk right up to it. People were literally camping there even though there was a full parking lot, tour buses pulling in and out, and a restaurant nearby. There were also working farms on either side and a village about a half mile away. There were a lot of people riding bicycles along the route we took to get there, and while we were standing and looking at the waterfall, three people rode by us on Icelandic horses.

I really didn't appreciate the bicyclists at all. While the highways were pretty good this trip, there are no shoulders on the roads, and the bicyclists would often take up the entire lane, forcing cars to swerve around them into oncoming traffic. Between the bicycles, the rain, the roundabouts, and the random goats in the road, it took us 2 1/2 hours (187 km) to get to Reynisfjara. Skógafoss was our first stop on the way back to Reykjavik.

      Wasserfall 1 - Skogafoss

      August 12, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Read more

      Skógafoss

      August 14, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Read more

      Skogafoss

      August 14, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

☺️Read more

      Rutshellir cave & Skógafoss

      November 4, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

      Skogafoss

      September 21, 2022 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      South Coast through Vik

      December 15, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Unfortunately no sightings of the Aurora last night. I set hourly alarms through the night to check outside but all night was a crazy wind and snow storm.

The weather forecast for today was for the worst weather of our 5 days - rain and wind. We had a fairly simple itinerary set for today with only a few highlights to stop by and check out. The road along the South Coast consists of big long stretches across extensive lava fields from a major volcanic eruption that happened in the 1700’s. The Laki eruption that happened in 1783 destroyed most of the early settlement villages and farmlands along the South Coast. An estimated 25% of Iceland’s population and over 50% of livestock died as a result. Even now, over 200 years later, the plains are covered in hundreds of kilometres of rugged lava that only moss has been able to grow on.

Our first stop was Skógafoss, a striking 60m waterfall over a sheer, rocky cliff. Despite the size, we could walk right up the creekbed to the base of the falls and experience the sheer power of it through the spray coming off the bottom. Braving the ice rain and wind, we took some stairs to the top and were able to see it from above.

Our next stop was the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. We arrived and treated ourselves to some 2-minute noodles in the car before braving the weather once again to walk out to the beach. The waves were wild so we could only look from afar at the large basalt hexagonal columns that make up the sea cliffs.

The town of Vik was kinda a non-event. We dropped by the supermarket to load up on some groceries and continued the drive east to our hotel for the evening. Once we arrived after an hour's drive Jessie realised she’d lost her phone. Thankfully we found out it was back at the supermarket so drove back to pick it up. By now it was dinner time so we took the opportunity to try a “Black crust” pizza. Worth the 2 hour loop back to get the phone I’d say 😎

      Skógafoss

      November 30, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ 🌙 -3 °C

Read more
