      A slow day with a sparkly finish…

      15. september 2023, Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Beautiful sunrise, very fast squirrels, tiny bananas…
We decided to have a pool day so once again did the 10 minute stroll to the Nirwana Gardens infinity pool. Lunch was authentic Chinese food at the Kelong restaurant then back to the pool - one of us may be a little burnt.
The evening adventure was a swamp tour to see the fireflies and, thankfully, no crocodiles or snakes. This was so peaceful and the tiny fireflies were beautiful and fun to catch in our hands. 21 yr old Ali was a great tour guide. There may have been some pre-sleep 500 played as well…

This part of Bintan (1/3 of the island) is financed by Singapore so has good water, electricity and is safer than other parts of Indonesia. It was hit hard by the lack of tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic and many shops closed and building stopped but there is hope development will continue.
The woman who served us last night works 6 days, mostly until 11pm and then has a bus ride for an hour to get home - sometimes she needs to be back at 7am! She is a single mum with three children - 6, 12 and 16. The eldest is away at school in Jakarta so the two younger children look after themselves while she works.
Our wealth is confronting as the wages are low. It is quiet here at the moment so the place is very over staffed but we are grateful the workers have continuous employment.

      Bintan: Magroven

      22. august 2023, Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The mangroves play host to a variety of exotic wildlife. Some of the shy wildlife includes the macaque and silver leaf monkeys, monitor lizards and mangrove snakes. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to see snakes sleeping in the branches right above you and even monkeys swinging through the trees. Marine life fills the riverbed including, mudskippers, crabs, mud lobsters, snails and clams amongst many others. Towards the end of the river, the guide will also share the different uses of the plants found in the mangrove such as weaving of hats or building of roofs.

We were extremely lucky today and saw many snakes and also many monkeys.

      Bintan: Telaga Biru

      22. august 2023, Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

It's hard to imagine that this crystal blue lake was once just a large crater in an abandoned mining site, but as time went by, it began to gradually fill with rainwater resulting in a "post-apocalyptic oasis" in the middle of Gurun Pasir Busung desert. The entrance fee to this area is only IDR 30,000 per person, and as the spot is still quite secluded, there are not that many food or trinket sellers in the area just yet. This barren land is a great place to explore during your trip to Bintan.Les mer

      Mayang Sari Resort… farewell!

      18. september 2023, Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Some of the bits and pieces from our time here that we haven’t mentioned….
There is a man at the top of the palm tree! They climb up using notches that have been cut into the trunk and trim the branches and the coconuts so they don’t drop on unsuspecting tourists.
The tree that provided us with great shade outside our rooms on the edge of the beach produces pods that flower overnight, then drop the flowers in the morning. It’s a Sea Poison tree… spectacular flowers that are mostly viewed on the ground.
Finally, we had lovely staff at our ‘private’ resort. We particularly enjoyed Yanti, photographed between Kay and I. We were the first Australians they have had at the resort since the pandemic.

      Bintan, Indonesia

      19. mai 2023, Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

We had a short visit to Bintan Island (in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia) but it looked like a beautiful place to come back to. It is 453 square miles and its closeness to Singapore (45 minutes by boat) has resulted in development of beaches as popular resorts with hotels. The resorts were new and the beaches were fabulous, clear with great sand. We went to the Bintan Resorts where there is 740 acres of beautiful beaches and tropics.

There are many things to see and do and we hope to get back to the mangroves, resorts, snorkeling, spas, Penyengat Island & all the Temples (including a Temple of 500 stone statues of arhats (those that have achieved Nirvana).

      Last day in Indonesia.

      1. oktober, Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Today was housekeeping in Indonesia. Yummy food, games, mani/pedi and massage time.

1- best restaurant so far. Fresh fish that you select before your meal and they bbq it for you. Delicious! Really delicious! Then we went to the game store to try to win the grabbing game to get a durian. Yep, the beloved fruit can be won; alas not by me. I was unsuccessful so the durian is still elusive to me.

Great pedicure but not so relaxing massage. I opted for the 90 minute - four hands massage. Two women rubbing and scratching by body until I begged them to stop. They started by both sitting on my back and then walking on my back. Unfortunately the air was out of my lungs when they asked if I wanted them to “coin” me instead walking on me. I got a head nod out as a coin sounded safer then two woman walking on me. Wrong!
Indonesia coin massage (kerokan) is a traditional massage where a coin is used to scrape your back. Kinda painful. Especially when you aren’t expecting it. After five minutes of hold your breath pain, one lady said “your body is bad! You have pain! It’s red!” To which I replied, “well, if you stop scratching me; I won’t be red”. So, I left with red hickeys all over my back. Definitely a first.

Later I was told that it cures pain and prevents the common cold by causing circulation to come to the surface. I don’t have a cold. And I wouldn’t tell anyone if I did. I’m a pass on the next scraping event.

I will miss Indonesia. Coins and all. Off to Singapore tomorrow.

Btw, the massage was expensive. 90 min with two therapists was around $30 in the hotel spa. Would have been $8-12 outside of the hotel spa.

      Nine Dash Line

      7. mars, Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

I thought I was done with lines only to hear tonight of the nine dash line in the South China sea. Those familiar with military history know about it, but civilians like me are ignorant. In the 2009 China presented a map of the South zchin Sea containing 9 dashes, saying the dashes enclosed the area of the South China Sea that they and Taiwan claimed. Vietnam Nam, Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia objected. To substantiate their map China has been laying claim to uninhabited islands in the South China sea. If these claims are recognized China will have territorial rights extending 12 miles from each island and exclusive economic rights extending 200 miles out. In addition China has been constructing artificial islands that also serve military objectives. The Phillipines brought the issue up with the World Court who agreed with the Phillipines but China refuses to recognize the decision. Meanwhile we hear about South sea aerial and marine territorial conflicts with China. Interestingly images of the nine dash line appears in movies such as Barbie and Abominable, textbooks printed in China that are used by other countries, an ESPN sports cast and even the Chinese passport. The movies have been banned; the textbooks removed; the sportscast protested; and the Chinese passport rejected in the Philippines and Vietnam. An interesting issue to follow.Les mer

      Bintan Tag 2 - Ebbe

      24. april 2019, Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
