    Gateway to Hyderabad!

    January 5, 2016 in India ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

When my bus rolled into Hyderabad for the first time, I felt a twinge of sadness at leaving the wonderfully clean and quiet city of Mysore behind that I had come to call as home, and coming once again into the hullabaloo of a city.
Riding into Hyderabad, I was awestruck my the sheer buildings and heritage of old Hyderabad. Joining up with it's twin city of Secunderabad, Hyderabad exuded a old charm of the days gone by and the Nawabs of yore. Verily, the parapets and towering masjids were a testament to the days gone by.
Okay, I better stop yapping in old English and get back to contemporary times. And yes, of course I went out that very day to explore the new city!

  • Numaish: Night out!

    January 9, 2016 in India ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

And forever being an unplanned idiot, the second night in the new city of Hyderabad, I rode off to the most happening place in the new city.

Numaish-The Nampally exhibition remains the only one of it's kind in India. Started in 1938 with a hundred stalls, it now sprawls over the Exhibition Grounds of Nampally, visited by over 21 lakh people over 45 days.

Sounds exciting, right? What was not so thrilling for me and my new roommate was when the fair closed down at 2am the next morning and we had nowhere to go. (I had assumed it to be some sort of all night exhibition a la Durga Puja Exhibitions, West Bengal.) So there we where, eating haleem and biriyani without a clue what to do next. We ended up visiting the famous Hussain Sagar lake, late at night, teeming with teenagers and lovers under the lit roads. And we walked some more for some local delicacies and then some more, until we could walk no more.
When we finally reached home early the next morning, tired and exhausted, but our bags laden with goodies, we flopped on our beds and didn't see the sun again for another 27 hours.

  • Chowmallah: The Four Palaces

    January 19, 2016 in India ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

"Why is it called Chowmallah Palace again?" I asked.
Akash sighed, "Because there are four palaces and four in Persian is Chahar. Hence colloquially."
"And not because the Nizams liked chowmein." He cocked his eyebrows and added, noticing the smile forming on my face.
The Chowmallah Palace is one of the most well conserved cultural heritages in India. It is a cultural treasure trove for heritage seekers but to a poorly history educated guy like me, I never got the appeal of seeing another Mahal unless the name was Taj.
Nevertheless, I was quite impressed by the cutlery collection and the now vintage car collection of the late Nizams.

  • Car Museum: One of a kind!

    January 19, 2016 in India ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Football. Camera. A billiards board. A toilet. A bathroom. Any wacky thing. What is common between all these stuff? Would you believe it if I told you that all of these have wheels and can move!

Welcome to Sudha Cars Museum where any thing you can think of can move and be ridden, including my favorite: A BED CAR!! Sudha Cars Museum is the first and only handmade Wacky Car museum in the World. It is the brainchild of Mr. K. Sudhakar, a Guinness World Record Holder for making the Largest Tricycle in theWorld. Apart from that he has, proudly displayed, a Limca Book of Records and Ripley's Certificate!

I personally believe a must visit in Hyderabad on par with the Ramojis and Charminars. Wonder what Mr. Sudhakar dreamt of in an age we dreamt of superheroes and cartoons!

  • Days a jumpin'

    May 14, 2016 in India ⋅ ☀️ 39 °C

So I have settled into a township called Modi Township. Yeah, I know what you are thinking. No, it's not named after our current Prime Minister. And no, when swag people say "Bro, I reached home, I am in Modi right now", please don't bring up any gross innuendo references to that sentence.
Anyway, I resided near a place called Annoijguda. True to my rushed nature, I used to visit Indira Park at 7am every morning for parkour practice with Abhinav Freerunning Academy. Do look them up if you are in Hyderabad or YouTube.

And hence my days passed in 'leaps and bounds'. You bet all puns intended!

  • Closed Forts and bikes!

    May 14, 2016 in India ⋅ ☀️ 40 °C

A Pulsar NS200, a RS200, a Yamaha FZ. Who's gonna plan for a trip when you can just ride, ride and ride free!
Trust me people, you plan beforehand before leaving for a place. We learnt so the hard way after reaching Bhongir Fort at 5 in the evening and finding it closed. Well, when you have made up your mind to have a good time and click wacky pic/videos, it doesn't matter how and where you do it. I can't really tell you much about Bhongir Fort. Never got around to seeing it! But no complaints.
Live to Ride and explore. Invoke the best in you!

  • Hyderabad without kebabs?

    May 15, 2016 in India ⋅ 🌙 34 °C

A place without it's native cuisine is like Nike without shoes! And is it possible to have the Land of the Nawabs without their Biriyani and Kebabs! The shayaar in me applauds the rhyme!
The food connoisseur in me revels at the idea of tasting food in nooks and corners of this ancient city! Lemme string you along for the popular food ride

Mendi: This popular dish was found by me, quite by accident, from my Sudanese friends, living next door. And I discovered to my surprise how popular it is during the month of Ramadan.

Haleem: Every nook and corner of this city opens up a shop of haleem during the month of Ramadan. Ranging from local varieties to Iranian ones, the prices often vary from 50 bucks to a 1000

Biriyani: Oh! So much Biriyani! Oh it's everywhere! What new do I say about this dish! It does vary greatly from the Biriyani I've tasted back home, but then Bengal is one of a kind!

  • Morning ride!

    June 9, 2016 in India ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    "AANNISHH"
I jolted upright from my sleep only to realise it was my roommate standing there grinning sheepishly.
"Why on earth did you wake me up this early in the morning?" I asked yawning.
"Let's go for a ride", he said still grinning. "I know Hyderabad is not a city known for it's greenery, but I've found a perfect place to explore."

And that's how we visited Kondapur, Ghatkesar. And boy, was I glad that I went along! It was a serene morning with stunning scenery and beautiful roads with a green canopy. See for yourself and tell me if you enjoy it or not!

  • Festival of Colours '17

    March 12, 2017 in India ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

What is it about the way Indians celebrate Holi and Diwali that entices the entire world! And while Diwali is amazing in it's own right, Holi is where the fun and colours of life are associated.
There is something in the way kids dump colours on each other and on unsuspecting elders that has caught the fancy of a nation. And why just colours? Look a little wider, and as soon as the colours are done, people turn to mud, earth and anything, just for an excuse to have fun!
And of course the snobs. Those who love playing but has to give an earful to others about the dangers of synthetic colours. "No No, I toh don't play Holi only! My nah skin is allergic to colours. I use only real Ayurvedic colours!" And so saying, proceed to take out the same colours from an expensive container and smear them. And without saying, the Touch-me-nots. Those who put up a shrill fight as soon as someone comes near them with colour. "Oh my God! My face! My beauty." And the guys, who play with everything, but colour! Don't even guess what they do play with!

Nevertheless, the culture and traditions associated with Holi has continued if not thriven which is why people still burn a bonfire for Holika Dahon on Holi Eve.
Cheers to it continuing through lifetimes more. HOLI HAI!

  • STP is not Sewage Treatment Plant

    September 20, 2017 in India ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

A visit to the city office for work doesn't sound like fun, does it? It is when you take the Nehru Outer Ring Road to visit the STP- Software something planning. Infosys Hyderabad, built opposite the ISB campus(another gem of a campus), is a lush green delight for the eyes. And for the environment too. From rainwater harvesting to solar panels, from ponds for fishes to hotspots for rare trees, it is an environmentalist's utopia!
Take a look for yourself at some of the structures.
If all profit seeking corporate companies gave a little back to the environment, maybe the summers in Hyderabad wouldn't be as scorching!
    Kudos to MNCs like these!
