      Côme

      12 Ogos 2023, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Como and Milan

      11 Julai 2023, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

On our way to Como we stopped in Milan to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper which is a mural painting in a church outside the city centre and the impressive Duomo (cathedral). The painting has been so well restored and depicts the expressions and body language at the moment when Christ told his disciples that one of them would betray him. The basilica next door also has some lovely frescos.
It was a very hot day which made our visit to the Duomo challenging but the church was so impressive. It has 52 columns and too many aspects to mention. Shannon was interested that it held the relics of St Charles Borromeo (her local parish in Sydney), who was the Bishop here. We climbed the stairs to the terrace roof which gave lovely aspects but again was very hot so we couldn’t stay long. We definitely earned our gelato before heading off.
We arrived in Como in time for a meal, a cool shower and bed. Early the next morning there was a big thunderstorm which cooled everything down and we had a lovely cloudy day for our walking tour of Como and a ferry ride on the lake. Our guide was so good in her calm yet passionate commentary and insights. She gave. Some good history lessons for Italy in general and seemed less territorial than most other guides. The lake and the quaint villages are so beautiful and wasn’t too crowded either.
It was so nice just walking around and having meals with Theresa and Shannon. This would be our last evening together before we headed to India and the girls continue their Italian tour to Venice, Florence and Tuscany, Umbria and then a few days in Vienna to visit friends of Shannon’s before they start their World Youth Day pilgrimage, starting in Rome, Assisi and then onto Portugal.
We had a typical Italian aperitif and then a lovely dinner in a local piazza. The meal was lovely and ended with another big storm so we had to run back in the rain which was quite a hoot. And so ended our Europe trip in such a special way with our girls (we missed you Robbie !). As always, Italy was so impressive in so many ways. Next time maybe we need to head South! Ciao!

      Our last day in Como

      20 Mei 2023, Itali ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We had originally planned to spend the day on the lake. We were going to rent a boat and wake surf. This entire trip we expected it to be warm by now. Everyone has said this weather is usually cold. Since the weather didn’t cooperate with us, we had to change plans. We were all very disappointed. Gabe walked to the street market and found us a bag to pack up all our trip goodies! Did I tell you the 1st package we sent home is still in Lucca ? The Poste Italia sucks….the lady told us completely wrong and the package has never left Lucca. We are still working that out. I worked on some packing and the boys played video games together. We are all going to watch a minor league women’s soccer game. The game was cool. The stadium seating was covered. Which was good. Since is rained the entire day. After that soccer game we drove to Cernobbio. It sounds like “Chernobyl”. The traffic around Como has gotten so much worse since we first arrived. I cannot imagine it in the summer. It’s only a 2 lane road and in some places a 1 lane road. There was a car show going on in Cernobbio. So there were lots of cool cars driving around. We had a coffee and a pastry at a pastecheria on the lake. It’s Vitto’s favorite. Then we walked around a little bit. Gabe and I got a Bellini from the famous Harrys Bar in Venice. They have a little spot there that sells Bellinis, coffee and Chippriani products. Like pasta and sauces…We drove over to Franchi’s soccer game and watched his match. Then we finally made it to dinner. We didn’t get a proper lunch so we were all starving. We are super excited because we are going to a Lebanese restaurant. Vitto met the family who owns the restaurant at Tommis boxing class. The family has 5 boys and they all work at the restaurant. The food was wonderful. So homemade and tasted delicious. We were stuffed when we left. By the end of the night the restaurant was packed. They took a little while to bring our check and we really needed to get home to pack. Tomorrow we are leaving to go to Milan for the day. Ciao.Baca lagi

      Milan

      25 Ogos 2019, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Caught early train with a 5.00 wake up.
      2.5 hrs to Milan.

At Milan we have a 'Best of Milan plus The Last Supper Tour' booked at 10:45am
Our train gets in at 10:00. We struggle to locate the luggage drop off point as it is 3 floors below us. Grab a Taxi with a rally driver!!

We make it perfectly on time. Eleana is our guide. She is colourful and cute. Earpieces in we begin with the famous Duomo.

We walk the streets stopping at various buildings and statues. I like the one of Leonardo. We look up at the glass ceiling of the Victor Emmanuel shops surrounded by Prada, Versace, Lois Vuitton and it is all beautiful.

The Sforsesco castle is amazing. Very old with a massive moat. Very hot today, I slurp on an icypole.

We head to the church Santa Maria Delle Grazie where the Last Supper is painted on a wall in a room where the Monks would eat their meals.

I took out my earpiece and sat still. Only small groups are allowed in for 15 minutes.
The painting is well worn but still colourful. Many restorations have been done.

All I know about the story is that Jesus and his disciples had just discovered that someone has betrayed Jesus and they were discussing whom it could be.

Tour finished, we hail a cab to catch our 1.5hr train to Como.

We are squished on the train and Athena has to hold our cases as they go rolling away on every turn!

We arrive at Como and it is bustling with people and cars.
We both wish we had booked more days in Monterosso as it was heavenly quiet.

      Como city

      20 Julai 2023, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our second day in Italy was a day trip to Lake Como and Lake Lugano, and we had an excellent time.
Our itinerary was thus: we travelled with a tour group from Milan to Como city, boarded a huge ferry and floated around the lake for two and a half hours, hopped off at Bellagio for an hour and a half, hopped back onto a different ferry for ten minutes to the other side of the lake, hopped back on the bus to Lugano, wandered around for an hour and a half, and then went back to Milan. Lovely lovely day.Baca lagi

      Wherefore art thou?

      30 Mei, Itali ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today we left Venice and headed west. Final thoughts on Venice - I really liked the history and the canals are great but it would be a pain to live there, imagine renovating a house where everything had to come by boat!

We hit the autostrate and headed to our next destination - the city of Verona.

Of course this city is famous for being the location of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. While a good story it is just that, a story, Shakespeare didn’t visit Verona. Our guide filled us in, apparently Shakespeare based the story on another story written by someone else and it is a bit of a political statement on the tension between the Vatican and the Emperor. Anyway Verona has cashed in on it and you can visit Juliet’s balcony - the original owners in the 14th century had a name similar to Capulet - along with a few hundred of your closest friends, yes it was packed!

Verona’s other claim is a first century arena that is older than the Colosseum. They still use it for concerts and shows.

Verona is on the river Adige which is the second longest in Italy after the Po. It is dominated by the Castel San Pietro which sits on the river.

After looking around we made it back to the bus and onto the autostrade for our next destination - Como, on the lake of the same name.

Some comments about Italian traffic. It is bad! The cities are worse than Sydney as they are usually tiny streets not meant for cars but outside the cities the autostrades are also bad. Most of the time traffic flows OK but there are so many semi trailers it is always heavy. They have to pay tolls but it isn’t fully automatic tolling you have gates to pay by cash, card, or auto-toll so it is usually a mess. Of course road signs and rules are seen as guidelines which can be broken if desired.

We stopped on our way to Como to visit a winery making Franciacorta wine. Despite the name this doesn’t have anything to do with France it is the type of wine they produce. These sparkling red and white wines can only be made in this area of Lombardy and the process has similar controls as the cheese and prosciutto manufacturers we visited the other day.

To date the land we have been travelling through has been flat agricultural land. Como is not far from Milan and is starting to get up into the hills and mountains at the top of Italy. We saw some on our way and there is still snow up high, great views!

After our wine tasting we continued on to Como. Arriving quite late so we haven’t looked around yet, that happens tomorrow.

      Lake Como!

      3 Jun 2023, Itali ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Ari and I arrived at Lake Como a few days earlier than anticipated. We spent one night at the northern most tip of the lake in a rather sleepy town whos name I can’t recall. After a night there we thought we’d enjoy a slightly larger town. We hopped a 4 hour slow ferry to the town of Como. It was a wonderful tour of the lake, and the ferry was empty when we got on. By the time we got off, people were crammed in every corner of that boat, sitting on the floor or anywhere they could find a place! We had to keep our butts glued to the seat if we wanted to keep them! We grabbed a hostel the first night in Como and ended up meeting a few very neat people to hang out with for a couple days while we awaited Cory and Sig’s arrival! 3 days in Como, and then we went to Bellagio to link up with Cory and Sig! Bellagio meant good wine, good food and great views! And some stellar hiking to boot.Baca lagi

      The Lure of Lake Como

      4 Ogos 2023, Itali

We arrived to an overcast Como which was better than the forecasted thunderstorms, although it felt as though the weather could change any moment.

After having gelati we needed to work out what to do next as everybody we know who has been to Lake Como raves about it and whilst we weren't getting that vibe we also knew we only had one night in Como so we had to make the most of our limited time.

We hurriedly booked tickets for a boat trip hoping the weather would hold out (which it did) and took a 1 hour trip on the lake. It was spectacular and quite obviously an area of excessive wealth and prestige.

Once we were off the boat our next stop was the funicular (cable car) to see Como from above.

As the sun started to go down the place came to life and we decided to have dinner in the old city Square which was lit up and has the Cathedral as a backdrop.

After a later dinner we had a leisurely walk home enjoying the balmy warm weather and thankful that the predicted thunderstorms did not materialise.
