      Breakfast and a Parade, Montepulciano

      This morning I watched my last sunrise over the Tuscan hills from our kitchen window. I will miss this view (but not the four flights of stairs to our apartment). We managed to fit in one last breakfast in the Piazza Grande where we were also entertained with a medieval themed parade. While I am still unsure what the parade was in aide of, the participants took it all very seriously. I thought it might have been a farewell parade for Brad and me.

      It has been such a treat spending a longer time in the one place, using it as our base while we explored the area. We also loved the down time we got to enjoy. Tuscany has certainly lived up to the hype. We sadly bid our wonderful apartment farewell and hit the road towards Siena.      Baca selengkapnya

      Comune di Montepulciano Tower Climb

      We decided to start today with a climb to the top of the tower of Montepulciano’s Municipal building in the main square, Piazza Grande. This is still their working offices and we actually had to walk through their office and storage spaces to access the steps to the tower. Now that would never happen in Australia. We walked though all their city files dating back many years. It is so bizarre how relaxed they are over here.

      So what did I learn today - do not wear a dress on a windy day, especially when climbing to the top of tower where it was blowing a gale. And two, I have discovered my fear of old stairs has increased causing a minor panic attack as we were climbing century old, crumbly, extremely narrow stairs. I was almost frozen halfway up. Problem is I love the views and am not afraid of heights, it is just the getting there that scares me to death.

      The view from the top was spectacular and would have been even better had the skies not been so hazy and overcast. I am glad I managed to get to the top though.      Baca selengkapnya

      Montepulciano and theVal D’Orcia

      Montepulciano is in the “Vino Nobile” wine region, where the grape variety is still Sangiovese, like Chianti Classico, but it is more likely to be blended with other varietals.

      We are staying in the heart of this old medieval city, which sits high on a hill. In fact, our guest house has many different levels, and we can go out the front door and be on the upper road, or the back door to reach the lower road.

      After cheerful banter at breakfast from our exuberant B&B host, Roberto, we set out to explore the upper part of the town, using Rick Steves’ book. One recommended stop was to the store and workshop of coppersmith Ramaio Cesare.

      Cesare’s store has many beautiful pieces of copper cookware and decorative pieces. His workshop is full of tools and copper pieces, old smelting equipment and many photos of his work, including the copper top of the Duomo in Siena and the piece he designed and personally delivered to Pope Benedict. We probably spent 45 minutes with Cesare, and not a word of English was spoken by him. He is passionate about his work, and quite a character.

      After a traditional Tuscan lunch of pasta or fondue, we got the car from the parking lot (this is a pedestrian town, for the most part), to explore the countryside — the Val d’Orcia—a UNESCO World Heritage site. We stopped in more medieval villages and a village with thermal baths. There we came upon a car race, the Mille Miglia, which passes through the village. Vintage cars make a round trip from Brescia (north, near Milan) to Rome, and back.      Baca selengkapnya

      Caffe Poliziano, Montepulciano

      After yesterday’s exciting day out exploring Assisi and our car failing us, we chose to spend today exploring the steep streets of Montepulciano. One thing I realised this morning is that we actually didn’t need to leave the apartment at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise yesterday - we can see it from our kitchen window. I will add that I do have to be on tiptoes to see it and I do get a much better view with one foot on a chair and the other foot in the sink. This is the only way I can manage to get my phone and camera out of the window to take photos of the view and not lose hold of my phone or camera entirely. It is worth the effort, believe me.

      Anyway, we are starting to fall into the Italian way of things - breakfast at 11 after a lovely lie in (well for Brad. I was standing in the kitchen sink taking photos as the sun rose). We ventured out for breakfast at Caffe Poliziano where we enjoyed a very delicious breakfast while sat on a tiny balcony with stunning views of the Valdichiana. We certainly put our trust in the supports for the balcony and I was still a bit concerned that the karma gods might still be annoyed with Brad. Thankfully it seems we paid the price yesterday and we survived our beautiful breakfast location.

      We spent the rest of the day strolling the laneways and streets of Montepulciano, admiring the beautiful historic buildings, tasting some local wines, buying a unique piece of art, oohing and ahhing over more expansive views before succumbing to a siesta. With an overcast day it felt just right to embrace the Italian way even more.      Baca selengkapnya

      Weiterfahrt nach Pienza, dort keinen Parkplatz bekommen, weiter nach Montalcino, dort war der Parkplatz sehr weit außerhalb und keine Busanbindung. Weiterfahrt nach Montepulciano, dort einen freien Stellplatz in der Nähe eines Gymnasiums bekommen. Von dort zu Fuß in den Ort gelaufen. Durch den Ort geschlendert, alles angeschaut, dann eine sehr schöne Gaststätte gefunden, sehr lecker gegessen und eine Weinverkostung mit dem sehr teuren Brunello, Chianti und Montepulciano gemacht. Wieder zurück gelaufen und die Nacht im Camper verbracht.Baca selengkapnya

      #17 Montepulciano

      Gerade bin ich zurück nach Florenz gekommen, musste mich erstmal orientieren und alles "aufsetzen". Heute bekomme ich Besuch aus Deutschland, daher werde ich erstmal keinen neuen Beitrag schaffen. Aber hier schonmal ein paar wundervolle Fotos aus Montepulciano!

      Da Montepulciano mittlerweile recht lange her ist, hier nur stichwortartig, was mir noch im Gedächtnis ist:
      - Montepulciano ist wunderschön und genau so, wie man sich ein typisch toskanisches Dorf vorstellt: wahnsinnig viel grün, die charakteristischen schlanken Zypressen stehen überall in der Landschaft
      - leider ist es auch wahnsinnig touristisch. Das bedeutet, dass man kaum Einheimische trifft und alles teuer und das Meiste weniger hochwertig oder authentisch ist - so zumindest hatte ich das Gefühl
      - der Wein ist SEHR lecker!
      - Hier gibt es ein Foltermuseum - faszinierend, abschreckend und krass, was hier im Mittelalter so für Praktiken angewendet wurden!
      - das vierte und fünfte Foto zeigen Teil des unterirdischen Tunnelsystems von Montepulciano, wo unter anderem geheime Treffen abgehalten wurden.
      - Montepulciano wirkt insgesamt sehr mittelalterlich und ich komme mir vor wie in einer anderen Zeit
      - Ich habe hier die widerlichste Lasagne meines Lebens gegessen (nur Käse und Nudeln, keine Tomatensoße! Und dafür hab ich schlanke 18€ bezahlt. Totally worth it.

      Hier noch ein paar Notizen von meinem Handy:
      Nördlich von Rom erinnert es mich landschaftlich an Deutschland. Fühlt sich ein bisschen an, wie nach Hause zu fahren- seltsame Überlappung von Assoziationen, verschiedenen Ichs finden statt.

      Die grüne, sanfte toskanische Landschaft beruhigt mich. Es is weniger aufgeregt, weniger schillernd und weniger farbenfroh als im schönen Süden. Aber beruhigender; das tut mir gut.

      Der Bus nach Montepulciano ist eine kleine Herausforderung (ÖFFIS!!), aber ich bin endlich mal zwei Nächte an einem Ort und nicht nur eine, d.h. ich hoffe, etwas zur Ruhe kommen zu können. Montepulciano ist genau so wie ich es mir vorgestellt hab. Malerisch und wunderschön!

      Es passiert nicht viel. Ich laufe durch die schönen Gassen, es sind aushaltbar viele Touristen hier und ich fühle mich wie im Mittelalter, weil alles so alt und verschachtelt is.
      Unterirdische Gänge, Folterinstrumente aus dem Mittelalter.

      Doch schon am nächsten Tag hab ich wieder schlechte Laune. Es gab zwei Tropfen, die meinen empfindlichen Ozean heute getrübt haben - und ich bekomme leider keine Erleichterung geschickt. Und alles is furchtbar teuer und nicht mal lecker (ich hab hier die widerlichste schlechteste Lasagne meines Lebens gegessen: nur Nudelplatten und Käse, zero Tomatensoße!!!).

      Morgen is zum Glück ein neuer Tag und ich fahr quasi in "meine Hood" zurück: westliche Toskana. Genauer gesagt nach Siena.

      Hier, in Siena, is der Kaffee besser, meine Laune und das Wetter auch 😍 Bisher hab ich nirgends -nichtmal auf Sizilien- besseren Kaffee als in der Gegend hier getrunken. Hab ich ein Glück, dass ich mich für die Gegend als Dreh- und Angelpunkt entschieden hab :)      Baca selengkapnya

      Ristorante Degli Archi, Montepulciano

      With the weather being overcast we decided to have a relaxing last day in Montepulciano. We enjoyed a last stroll through town, checked out a few of the shops, churches and wine cellars before having lunch at the very eccentric Ristorante Degli Archi, a restaurant that has been operating for 126 years under the one family.

      With amazing views overlooking the gorgeous valley, the interior is just as interesting with its bright pink walls, mismatched furniture and decor items, and a very eclectic decorating style. It is a feast for the eyes. It was such a great experience with the owner being a very engaging man with his limited English. Once he found out we were Australian he went on to tell us about the famous Australian actors who had eaten there and even pulled out his phone to show us his photos. Among the past famous clientele were Russel Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicolson, Muhammad Ali, Robert Patterson (for all those Twilight fans) and Sophia Loren, who the owner said was his girlfriend, but he couldn’t tell his wife.

      He also schooled me on how to hold a wine glass and I almost got a smack on the wrist for doing it wrong. He was a brilliant host and added to our experience. And to make things even better our food was amazing. It was the perfect lunch for our last day here.      Baca selengkapnya

      AUF IN DIE TOSKANA

      Gestern Morgen haben wir völlig vergeblich die Burg auf der Suche nach Anzeichen für einen schönen Sonnenaufgang umrundet, aber nur dicke dunkle Regenwolken gesichtet, die - als wir zurück am Womo waren - sich all ihrer Tropfen entledigten ... uns sollte das nicht stören, hieß doch der Plan " Auf in die Toskana " ...
      Ich hab mich dazu in meine Autobox gekuschelt und mich gut 3 Stunden wieder unzählige Kurven rauf und runter chauffieren lassen, schließlich mussten wir die Apenninen überqueren, um zu unserem Tagesziel der mittelalterlichen Hügelstadt Montepulciano zu gelangen ...
      In schon gewohnter Manier - ich schnüffelnd /neugierig und meine Beiden fotografierend/ staunend schlenderten wir bis zum Abend durch die verwinkelten, alten Gassen.
      Zwischenrein gab es für meine Zweifüßler zuerst einen Muntermacher und später - das darf in dieser Stadt, die für ihre Weine in Kennerkreisen weltbekannt ist, einen Schoppen des edlen roten Rebensaftes.
      Für mich dagegen ging es zu aufregenden Geräten ...ich war ganz außer mir, was die mit meiner Mum machten, hin und her wurde sie geschaukelt und gewippt ...mir war das anfangs überhaupt nicht geheuer ...
      Ich hab mich von diesen ganzen Abenteuern dann unter dem Tisch in einer kleinen familiengeführten Pizzeria, abseits der Touristenroute erholt, während meine Zweifüßler ordentlich geschlemmt und dem Hauswein zugesprochen 😉 haben.
      Gut das sie mich mit dabei hatten ... ich hab sie sicher zum Womo geleitet ...
      HEUT Morgen hat es mit einem schönen Sonnenaufgang wieder geklappt und ich konnte mir die ersten Strahlen auf mein Fell scheinen lassen ...      Baca selengkapnya

      Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, Montepulciano

      With lunch over we planned to wander a bit more but the rain started and it was freezing. Thankfully the Chiesa Di Sant’Agostino was open so we could duck inside to stay dry and warm up, and of course, have a look around - you know we can’t resist a church. Sant’Agostino is the oldest remaining church in Montepulciano and building began in 1285. With its weathered stone facade I was quite surprised by its interior. It is a very simple church and with the simplicity is a touch of elegance, until you start looking at some of the art and statues. There are some weird art and statue choices, and a nativity scene that takes up a stage in a side room that just seems out of place. The fairy lights and pile of cords and plugs really don’t add to the overall look. It is unusual to say the least.

      On the high altar is a wooden crucifix attributed to Donatello and even that looked too modern against the elegant backdrop. With the Duomo of Montepulciano being closed for renovations, at least we got to see one church here in Montepulciano.      Baca selengkapnya
