      Bologna Day 3

      March 29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today we explored a lot around Bologna. We started off walking to The University of Bologna. Its the oldest university in continuous operation in the world! It was founded in 1088. It has 6 different museums to tour. We decided to tour the one with a variety of exhibits. Its was very cool. We had to leave early because of a fire drill. After we did that we wandered around for a bit and shopped. We went inside the Basilica di San Petronio in Piazza Maggiore. Saint Petronio is the patron saint of Bologna. The front of the church is unfinished. My dad wanted a mortadella sandwich for lunch Mom, Renee and I went to a 4.9 pizzeria. It was really good. Then we went home and packed up and relaxed. Once it was time we went to dinner at the place below our airbnb. The food was good. After taking the cooking class, I want to learn to make ragu just like we made. It’s been my favorite so far.Read more

      Day 1. Bologna

      August 25, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

I forgot to mention we visited the oldest bookshop in the world in Lisbon. Bertrand' founded in 1774. Did not have the same aura as Livraria Lello.
Have you ever had the feeling when waiting for your baggage that it is lost. We get that feeling every time in Italy. Alitalia was the airline that misplaced our bags many years ago and we still think it's going to happen again every time we visit.
The bags finally arrived and we relaxed.
Bologna is a city of 1 million and the street buildings gave lots of porticos for protection from the elements. They were welcome today to escape the hot sun. It has the worlds oldest university with Copernicus being one of its celebrated sons.
Our Albergo is right in the centre of the historic district with many historical highlights within a 500m radius. This afternoon we tried to have a ride on Bologna's underground river and explore the underground tunnels. It was not to be. They have been cancelled as being too dangerous. We manage to take a photo but that was all.
We thought the Basilica San Petronio was like a gian mausoleum , absolutely not atmosphere at all, unlike the narrow streets that surround it.
A late afternoon snack at The iconic Caffe Tamburini was just what the Dr ordered as was the gelato that followed.
Tomorrow's itinerary is planned and Shirl is writing her diary with the TV in the background.

Tarde de turismo en Bolonia 🤠⛪🍷

      March 6, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      Bologna

      September 6, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Full of Bologna

      July 20, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We cleaned up the apartment and meet up with Giorgio at 11 am. He kindly called us a cab (no hailing in Italy!) and saw us off. We made it to the train station with time to spare, and soon found our platform.

The train ride was only 35 minutes and because we were on a high speed train, it mostly went through tunnels. This was a bit disappointing as we were hoping to see the view. Anyway, we arrived in Bologna at 12:35 and got a cab rather quickly. We were taken to our hotel, Porta San Mamolo and were, thankfully, allowed to check in early. Our hotel is quirky as it's a series of small buildings in one complex. Our room is very nice and had huge wood beams running through the ceiling.

After settling in, we walked to the central market, which is way smaller than the one in Florence. We ate at a small restaurant that specialized in tartare. I had a tuna tartare burger; Brad had a salad with anchovies; and Evan chose the make your own sandwich option. Then we toured around the town square for a bit. Bologna is much different than Rome and Florence, the buildings seem more medieval and less Renaissance. There are 40 km of porticos to protect people from the heat as well, which is helpful! Also they don't have the super narrow sidewalks, which we are pleased about!

We decided to book tickets to climb the 496 steps to the top of the Torre degli Asinelli. We could only get a 4:15 time slot, so we grabbed a quick coffee to pass 45 minutes. Then, it was climbing time! The Tower is 97.2 m high and that equals a lot of steps! We climbed and climbed and eventually reached the top platform where we had a lovely view of Bologna! It was pretty tight at the top, but we managed to see all the vantage points. Then we had to climb down, which was much more challenging than up because some of the staircases were so steep. Evan was not so keen on the heights and he said that his lunch might reach the bottom before he did! Hahaha! In the end, he was fine.

It was getting late and we had to head back to the hotel in order to get ready for dinner, so we made our way back along the winding roads.

      Malinconia autunnale

      October 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C
