      Leta 79 je izbruh pepela in vulkanskih plinov segal do višine 33m, pod sabo pokopal Pompeje, Herkulanej, Oplontis in Stabiae. Toplotna energija ob izbruhu je bila sto tisočkrat večja kot ob sprožitvi atomskih bomb nad Hirosimo in Nagasakijem.Les mer

      Straight up - I didn't think I was gonna do it until we did it. About halfway up I still didn't think I was gonna do it. But we did it! We summited Mt Vesuvius from sea level!

      Not too many photos from me on the way up because I was focusing on not dying but enjoy a selection from the top 200m.

      We were nearly thwarted so many times as they really don't expect anyone to hike up.
      We set off to hike up under the impression that we could buy a ticket from the gate at the National park as we could not find the legit website (just a million third party ones). Got to the first gate (5km in from getting off our 7am train) and the lady informed us that the mountain was sold out for today. We felt a bit silly and took some time to decide that we would hike as far up as we could without a ticket and then walk around to the busses to come down. However after some broken Italian she let us know we could do most of the mountain for free just not the monetised tourist bit where they bus you in and we made peace with that. So she let us through! After another 3 or so hours we came to another gate and it turns out the lady had led us astray. We found ourselves at another gate with a man saying we needed tickets to get across the top and to the busses 😰. Luckily he took pity on us and radioed his friend to see if anyone hadn't rocked up for their allocated tickets and after a few minutes we had a success! Up to the crater !! The last gate before the crater an old lady made a point of telling us we were "very late for our allocated timeslot" on our tickets and she "really shouldn't let us in" but no one had it in their hearts to turn us away at this point (about 4 hours and 16km of climbing later) and we made it to the crater !! My inner geology student was so so stoked about it and somewhere 15 years ago, 8 year old Alfred is rejoicing. Some dicey bus logistics later we made it home and cooked the largest dinner and had some icy cold showers to recover. A HUGE day.      Les mer

      Vesuvius

      This morning we caught the ferry to Naples to start our last day in Italy. After arriving we had pre booked bag storage for the day so we could explore bag free. Turns out our bag storage was the back room of a cannabis chain store in Europe. Successfully dropping our bags we headed on our Mount Vesuvius tour. This included taking 2 separate buses up to 1000m altitude on the mountain. These buses were empty, comfortable and rated our most stress free rides. We then hiked 3km up to the top of the open crater, seeing inside the active volcano! We saw a bit of smoke and grumbles coming from inside, but we don’t think it will erupt for another couple years. Made our way down the trail and caught the buses back to the port just as some rain rolled in. The second bus back included a chaotic changeover with lots of Italian yelling, as well as heated Italian discussion between the bus driver and bus coordinator while driving. Good thing our stop was first (she took a mysterious exit before the first stop even happened). We collected our bags and checked in to our hotel. 5pm rolled around and we were starving. We wandered into a local pizza restaurant to find out nobody opens until 7pm for dinner. Luckily they let us stay for an early private dinner. We met the whole family and enjoyed a 3 course meal as the only non-family members in the restaurant. Ended the night with some Mario party and snacks. Fun fact: Matt slept on every type of transportation today.Les mer

      Le Vesuve

      L'Italie est pleine de volcans récents. Le Vésuve en est un, et il a marqué l'histoire de la baie de Naples.
      Il n'a pas grondé depuis 1944, dur de savoir quand il se réveillera ... mais quand on est sur le bord de l'immense cratère on ne peut s'empêcher de penser à l'énergie qu'il faut pour expulser des milliers de tonnes de roche jusqu'à 30km d'altitude... et du risque que l'on prend s'il se réveille à nouveau 😬
      Les dimensions du cratère "nouveau" se comptent en centaines de mètres (voir les photos), et en kilomètres pour le cratère ancien (caldeira) qui a explosé en 79 et "englouti" Pompei et Herculanum !
      Une petite pensée pour la Fiat Panda de Stef, ses cousines sont 4x4 ici 😉. Et si elles montent jusqu'ici c'est pour remonter le moral avec du vin du Vesuve que l'on peut boire en haut (avec des chips, du coca, des babioles et des pierres de lave... évidemment).      Les mer

      Der noch aktive Vulkan ist auch nur ne halbe Stunde von unserem kleinen feinen Campingplatz entfernt.
      Eigentlich wollten wir auf der Weiterreise mit Hymi da rauffahren.
      Ich bin echt froh, dass wir das nicht gemacht haben! Krass steil, kurvenreich und eng war der Weg!
      Vom Parkplatz läuft man dann noch 20min ebenfalls steil rauf.
      Für uns hat es sich total gelohnt, denn der Blick auf den Vulkan und Golf von Neapel war dank Sonnenschein und blauem Himmel Klasse!      Les mer

      Vesuv und Pompeji

      17. oktober 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      Heute sind wir mit dem Zug nach Pompeji gefahren, wo wir direkt von ein paar Touristenführen angesprochen wurden ob wir zum Vesuv oder nach Pompeji möchten und so würden wir direkt mit einem kleinen Bus von der Bahn bis auf circa 1100m hoch gefahren. Die Fahrt war auf Grund der teils Serpentinen artigen Straßen und der Fahrweise unseres Fahrers sehr interessant. Von dem Parkplatz des Busses mussten wir noch circa 20 Minuten laufen, um beim Krater anzukommen. Der Ausblick von hier oben ist wirklich schön und auch der Vulkan an dich ist sehr interessant, Grade da wir beide zuvor noch nie einen Vulkan aus der Nähe gesehen haben.
      Danach ging es wieder mit einem kleinen Bus nach Pompeji. Die Stadt, war/ist wirklich sehr groß und man könnte sich nur hier wahrscheinlich schon Tage aufhalten. Wir haben uns fast die gesamte Stadt einmal angeguckt und mithilfe von einem deutschen Plan mit ausführlichen Erklärungen auch viel dazu gelernt. Als wir am Ausgang angekommen waren, ist es auch schon dunkel gewesen und wir sind zurück zum Bahnhof gelaufen. Wir haben leider ganz knapp den zug verpasst so dass wir noch eine halbe Stunde warten dürften. In Neapel angekommen haben wir beide super Hunger gehabt und da wir eh noch vor hatten zu einer sehr alten Pizzeria zu gehen, haben wir uns dazu entschieden das heute zu machen. Wir mussten ca. 20 Minuten warten, aber dafür war die pizza wirklich sehr sehr lecker, es hat sich also gelohnt.      Les mer

      Ein zartlila farbener Fiat Panda - leider hab ich kein Foto - angeschrieben mit Instituti Seismologico, Vulkanologia, kam uns entgegen. Hey, wir kommen in Frieden - jetzt weiss ich wo die Vulkanier 🖖 wohnen😁. Bis zum Besucherparkplatz darf man mit dem eigenen Auto fahren, dann fährt ein Shuttle zum Ticketschalter (Jenny durfte mit). Dann beginnt der Aufstieg, ca. 200 Höhenmeter.Les mer

      Today Mom, Ruby and I get into the rental car and head to Vesuvius. As we drive up the steep road to the Volcano we see two girls thumbing so we pick them up. They had taken the local bus to Vesuvius but were dropped off near the bottom.
      We arrive at the parking which is half-way up the volcano and catch the shuttle bus up to the entrance. After a twenty minute walk with amazing views we are at the crater and join a tour.
      We find out that the eruption that buried pompeii was in 79 AD. The Roman city of Pompeii was buried in ash, whereas the town on the opposite side of Vesuvius called Herculeam was destroyed by mud slides.Back then the volcano was 3000 metres tall, as apposed to its current height of 1200 metres.
      We look hundreds of metres down to the bottom of the crater and I can imagine lava shooting out of there. We walk as far as we can around the crater, taking it all in, it’s spectacular.      Les mer

      Den Kraterrand erreicht.

      Am Kraterrand angekommen, können wir beobachten wie an verschiedenen Stellen des Vulkans Gase austreten.
      Es gibt verschieden tiefe Magmakammern.
      Die tiefste nachgewiesene Kammer liegt zwischen 12 und 15km tief, die oberste liegt bei 3-4km Tiefe.
      Eine erneute Eruption ist eher nicht zu befürchten, denn die Gastemperaturen sind seit 1944 ( Jahr des letzten großen Ausbruchs) rückläufig.      Les mer
