    Reykjavik Day 1

    October 14, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Landing at 6am is brutal. After navigating the airport, off site car rental agency and the hour drive in rush hour traffic to Reykjavík proper, we lucked out and were able to pay to get into our room early. After a couple cat naps we found lunch, went out to the harbor area did a couple touristy things (Flyover Iceland and the Lava Show) and then grabbed a really amazing dinner at at little restaurant in the old harbor. Ed is done in, but I’m sticking it out for an Icelandic storyteller at a little pub just down from the street from our hotel.Read more

  • Reykjavík day 2 and much further north

    October 15, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Whew! Another long day. We started with a whale watching tour where we got to see Minke whales and 2 humpbacks. It was really misty out and the seas were “rough” according to the guide, but it was only mildly exiting for me. :-). The bay we were in was fairly protected and shallow, but it was a worthwhile endeavor. We came back had lunch at a food hall and took another catnap (local shop cat in a wool store for the lols) before heading to the Sky Lagoon. OMG, totally worth it. They have a 7-step ritual that is awesome. It involved a cold plunge and I surprised myself by liking it. Ed noped out about half a second after he got in, but I stuck it out for maybe 30 seconds. :-). It made the 50 degree air feel downright balmy. Then there were saunas, cold mists, a salt scrub (self-applied), a steam room, and a delicious shot of some elixir after that was truly lovely. No pics because Ed and I decided to just enjoy, but no one else seemed to feel that way! We the lagoon bar sells waterproof phone bags I guess that’s a sign of the times. We grabbed a quick sandwich there because we got word that our Aurora tour was actually gonna happen (it was cancelled yesterday). So off we went with Tomas, who said we would have to drive a little further than usual…. Well, that turned out to be about 2.5 hours north of Reykjavik. I’m not sure we would have been on board if we had suspected that we would be getting back at 4am, but to be fair, we did find the lights and it was a fairly good show. I couldn’t get my big camera to even consider taking a picture (clearly I am still an amateur), so iPhone it is and I’ll add some of the tour guide’s photos after I get them.Read more

  • On our way to Grundarfjordur

    October 16, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Since we didn’t get home until 4am we paid a little more and got a late checkout from the hotel and had a lie-in. We had burgers at Le Kock (yes, all the jokes…) and headed north. On the way we stopped at the Settlement Center in Borgarnes where we learned about the settlement of Iceland and the saga of Egil in a walk-through narrated exhibit. We had a snack there as well. I’ve decided I love skyr, an Icelandic yogurt that is not sweet, but is also not as sour as Greek yogurt, but very much a similar texture. Covered in a berry sauce it was a perfect snack. We then finished the drive to our Airbnb, a home called Hellnafell. It was dark when we got here so we could barely see the mountain view of Kirkjufell. We headed to dinner at Bjargarsteinn Mathus. The food was amazing, but while we we there, the Northern Light came out and put on a show right over the mountain. Stunning.Read more

  • A sunrise view of Kirkjufell

    October 17, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

The place we are staying requires its own footprint. I’m standing on a rock jetty surrounded by mountains and sea birds and no less than 5 visible waterfalls. The big pointy mountain is Kirkjufell (of Game of Thrones fame). The white house with the red roof is our accommodation for the next three days. I’m a lucky girl.Read more

  • Snaefellsjokull National Park - Day 1

    October 17, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Today we toodled around the national park. It was a grey and rainy day for the most part. I am told there is a mountain with a glacier on top but due to the weather, I cannot confirm or deny its existence. We did see a lot of coastline, some lighthouses, many birds, and one intrepid and fast seal. We’re going to head back tomorrow in the hopes that the weather will cooperate and I will get some better pictures.Read more

  • Coastline to geysirs

    October 19, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

This morning we said goodbye to our lovely view of Kirkjufell and headed south and inland. We made a stop at one waterfall and then Thingvellir National Park for another waterfall that was something of a hike. Another hour brought us to our hotel for tonight and tomorrow, which is located in a geothermal area. They have a geysir that erupts every 5-10 minutes. We’re heading to dinner shortly.Read more

  • The Golden Circle

    October 20, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 34 °F

Today we went to see all the tourist sights in the golden circle. For the most part, totally worth it! The waterfalls Gullfoss and Faxafoss were lovely. We stopped at a tomato farm for lunch and had the best tomato soup and bread. We saw a big crater. We were both tired after all that excitement so we came back to the hotel, but I was determined not to miss the Secret Lagoon (supposedly the oldest pool in Iceland) so I headed back out and spent a lovely 1.5 hours soaking in the warm water and meeting people. 10 out of 10 worth it.Read more
