      Shinjuku, Tokyo

      30 November 2009, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Mic finally got her tempura fix! Their way for ordering food was genius by using a machine and pictures. Its funny because our first night we felt too shy and overwhelmed to actually try this but after a couple days we were confident and plus it was pretty easy. And the food was so good!Baca lagi

      Shinjuku

      28 Disember 2017, Jepun ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Tokyo-ites are gearing up for the New Years holidays, and we are about to find out what the city is like at New Year...what is open, what is not, what is crowded, what is empty. We are staying the first two nights at the Hotel Gracery - home of the huge Godzilla statue in Shinjuku - one of Tokyo's liveliest districts.
Travelling days are stressful days - carting luggage around on crowded trains and spending quite a bit of time completely lost ! Early on we coined the new term "Japantrum" and have all had one more or less. Some pics here of the tour we took on our first day into Ningyocho, an older part of Japan with many traditional food and artisan shops. We tried New Year treats - cakes with red bean paste and amazake (sweet drink made from the residue from sake making).

      Shinjuku, Tokyo

      30 November 2009, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

This place rivaled Shibuya to me. They're both pretty similar in many ways with their shopping and bright lights but I think Shinjuku looked a bit more cleaner. Mic was on point when she described the signs for the businesses looking like books. Such a cool place.Baca lagi

A long walk for a cocktail

      16 Julai 2016, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Thanks to the crap iPhone map feature compared to my far superior Google maps (yes, I am an android snob) we ended up walking around in circles looking for some gay bars, or rather lesbian bars because Agasei didn't wanna go to mixed ones. We managed to find a tiny one called Diamond Holic. It was a proper saloon bar effect when I walked in. Everyone turned round and looked at us. I kind of expected it, not because I'm a foreigner (although that probably didn't help matters) but I have read that these tiny lesbian bars have a lot of regulars and don't really have time for newbies. Anyway it was late because of the satnav so we only really had time for 1 drink before the trains finished so we left. We did look for others in the way with no luck. I'll stick to The Lisbon back home then yeah?Baca lagi

      Arriving in Tokyo

      24 Mac 2017, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

After a long and tiring plane journey where basically no sleep was had, we were excited but sleepy arriving in Japan. We had a few bits to sort out ready for the next few days of travel, which was time consuming but everyone we spoke to was very helpful. We are now checked in to our hotel and looking forward to having some food and an explore (whilst trying really hard to stay awake till Japanese night time!)Baca lagi

      Shinjuku and surrounds

      12 Oktober 2017, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Another early start today. This was our third day of temperatures in the high 20s. First stop was the post office to use an atm. Apparently Japanese bank atms may not except foreign cards so the post office is the place to go. We stopped at the Used Camera Box which is a tiny shop down in a basement. There is barely enough room for 3 or 4 customers. I found an old camera I was interested in but unfortunately it wasn't working. Next stop was the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. We went to the 45th floor observation deck of the North Tower. There was a line up for the South Tower for some reason (maybe a case of follow the leader). We spent some time looking at the view and made a few purchases including a small Lego like model of the Tokyo Sky Tree. We called in at the tourist information centre on our way out and were approached by a lady volunteer who asked if she could take us on a tour of the Government Assembly Hall. We accepted and had to go through security and be issued with visitor passes. She took us to the third floor and over a glass walkway linking both towers and then to the hall where the government meet 4 times a year. After leaving the building we had our photo taken with her. Next stop was the post office again to buy a stamp for the postcard Cathryn bought to send to Calvary. Looking for lunch was next. We ended up at Isetan department store and bought some sandwiches of all things. The way food to take away is presented is unbelievable. There doesn't seem to be any concern in Japan about plastic bags or excessive packaging in general. The way you are treated by staff is exceptional and makes any interactions a pleasure even with the language barriers. We took our lunch to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden which is an 50 hectare oasis in the middle of this frantic business and shopping district. We spent about 1.5 hours wandering around and tried a soft serve. After leaving we made our way to the Takashimaya Times Square to have a look at the Uniqlo clothing department. Seemed to be good quality and well priced. Next we tracked down another second hand camera store that I wanted to have a look at. Didn't have any luck here either so we made our way back to the Kitamura camera shop were I managed to find a 40 year old Minolta Hi- Matic F rangefinder camera in good condition for $30. We bought dinner (which they heated for us in the microwave) and beers from the Family Mart and ate in our room. Another long and tiring day.Baca lagi

      Someone's Birthday!!!!!

      17 Ogos 2016, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Wednesday in Nagoya was bright and sunny. Appropriate given the auspicious day.

The Birthday Girl and I were up early and off to explore the wilds of Nagoya. The ryokan didn't do breakfast so we had to find somewhere easy so we hit Starbucks and Kanamaya Station, a cop out I know but it was simple. There are a few Starbucks in Japan as well as McDonald's and KFC. Have also seen a couple of Dominos Pizza places.

We wanted to go to a museum and garden but the issue was they didn't open until 10am and we didn't have a lot of time. So we ended up walking quite a long way into the centre of Nagoya to have a look around.

There are a few interesting shops in Japan and Loft Department store is one of the big homemaker type stores selling all sorts of stuff you don't see in Oz. We poked around there for a while and bought a few bits and pieces before we headed out to find somewhere for lunch. Of course there was an Italian Pasta place close by so we dropped in to give it a try. In short it was actually pretty good. We have had Italian a couple of times since we have been here and the Japanese actually do a pretty good job though the language issue can make ordering a bit of a challenge.

Nagoya has a sister city arrangement with Los Angeles so they have a replica Hollywood Walk of Fame in one of their parks.

We then wandered back to Nagoya station, collected our bags from the ryokan and headed for the Shinkansen to Tokyo.

This time in Tokyo we are staying in the less up market end of town, Shinjuku. Our first stay in Tokyo was in Ginza with all the high end shops so the streets were neat and very clean. Shinjuku is ... less classy. As always it is very crowded and very noisy and the action seems to go on all night. There are lots of small lanes full of various restaurants and other establishments. One thing we have found across Japan (except in Ginza) is the Pachinko Parlours. Pachinko is as close as you will get to poker machines in Japan. Gambling for money is illegal so any Pachinko winnings are given in other forms - prizes or vouchers. They are always very loud and very smoky.

Smoking in Japan is tolerated. Smokers have their own smoking rooms on train platforms which are a glass boxes full of people puffing away, must be very unhealthy in there! There are also areas on the footpath designated as smoking areas and smoking carriages on trains.

Another thing I have noticed is the issue around parking. As I have said streets in Japan are small. Out in the burbs you really can't have 2 cars pass each other on the average street so street parking is not an option and if there are street spots they are usually metered. This begs the question where do people park? Simple, they either park in their garage or they park in one of the paid parking lots around the place. So if someone comes to visit you they have to either park their car on your property somewhere or pay to park in one of these parking yards. I guess this is why the Japanese focus on public transport so much as most of them wouldn't own a car. Some of these parking lots can be quite large and take 20+ cars, others closer to the centre of the city are very small and may only take 4 or 5.

Another thing is push bikes. There are loads of people riding bikes and they are really dangerous. They zoom up the footpath and don't ring a bell so they scare the hell out of you. You also get the clowns who ride a bike and text at the same time. This means there are great parking lots of bikes in some cities. Often times I noticed the bikes might have had a lock on them but they weren't actually chained to anything, very honest people.

Anyway in Shinjuku we stayed in the Shinjuku Prince Hotel which is a bit bigger than the place in Ginza and has a view as we are on the 16th floor. In fact we can see Godzilla.

      Seriously. See the photos.

To celebrate the Someone's Birthday we went to the nice restaurant in the Hotel on the 25th floor. Japanese food of course with some nice wine. Very good and she had a good night.

Tomorrow ... we are at a lose end! Our last full day in Tokyo so we'll have to see where we end up!
