      Shinjuku, Tokyo

      November 30, 2009 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Mic finally got her tempura fix! Their way for ordering food was genius by using a machine and pictures. Its funny because our first night we felt too shy and overwhelmed to actually try this but after a couple days we were confident and plus it was pretty easy. And the food was so good!Read more

A long walk for a cocktail

      July 16, 2016 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Thanks to the crap iPhone map feature compared to my far superior Google maps (yes, I am an android snob) we ended up walking around in circles looking for some gay bars, or rather lesbian bars because Agasei didn't wanna go to mixed ones. We managed to find a tiny one called Diamond Holic. It was a proper saloon bar effect when I walked in. Everyone turned round and looked at us. I kind of expected it, not because I'm a foreigner (although that probably didn't help matters) but I have read that these tiny lesbian bars have a lot of regulars and don't really have time for newbies. Anyway it was late because of the satnav so we only really had time for 1 drink before the trains finished so we left. We did look for others in the way with no luck. I'll stick to The Lisbon back home then yeah?Read more

      March 24, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

After a long and tiring plane journey where basically no sleep was had, we were excited but sleepy arriving in Japan. We had a few bits to sort out ready for the next few days of travel, which was time consuming but everyone we spoke to was very helpful. We are now checked in to our hotel and looking forward to having some food and an explore (whilst trying really hard to stay awake till Japanese night time!)Read more

      Shinjuku and surrounds

      October 12, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Another early start today. This was our third day of temperatures in the high 20s. First stop was the post office to use an atm. Apparently Japanese bank atms may not except foreign cards so the post office is the place to go. We stopped at the Used Camera Box which is a tiny shop down in a basement. There is barely enough room for 3 or 4 customers. I found an old camera I was interested in but unfortunately it wasn't working. Next stop was the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. We went to the 45th floor observation deck of the North Tower. There was a line up for the South Tower for some reason (maybe a case of follow the leader). We spent some time looking at the view and made a few purchases including a small Lego like model of the Tokyo Sky Tree. We called in at the tourist information centre on our way out and were approached by a lady volunteer who asked if she could take us on a tour of the Government Assembly Hall. We accepted and had to go through security and be issued with visitor passes. She took us to the third floor and over a glass walkway linking both towers and then to the hall where the government meet 4 times a year. After leaving the building we had our photo taken with her. Next stop was the post office again to buy a stamp for the postcard Cathryn bought to send to Calvary. Looking for lunch was next. We ended up at Isetan department store and bought some sandwiches of all things. The way food to take away is presented is unbelievable. There doesn't seem to be any concern in Japan about plastic bags or excessive packaging in general. The way you are treated by staff is exceptional and makes any interactions a pleasure even with the language barriers. We took our lunch to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden which is an 50 hectare oasis in the middle of this frantic business and shopping district. We spent about 1.5 hours wandering around and tried a soft serve. After leaving we made our way to the Takashimaya Times Square to have a look at the Uniqlo clothing department. Seemed to be good quality and well priced. Next we tracked down another second hand camera store that I wanted to have a look at. Didn't have any luck here either so we made our way back to the Kitamura camera shop were I managed to find a 40 year old Minolta Hi- Matic F rangefinder camera in good condition for $30. We bought dinner (which they heated for us in the microwave) and beers from the Family Mart and ate in our room. Another long and tiring day.Read more

      Robot Restaurant

      September 28, 2017 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

After checking in to the hotel, I snoozed for a couple of hours until 5pm, at which time I made my way to Robot Restaurant. The rain had started up again, so I borrowed an umbrella from the hotel and made my way over. Checkin for the 5.55pm show was at 5.20pm. When I got to the ticket counter, I exchanged my reservation slip for a ticket, and then I was ushered to a gaudy staircase which led to an equally gaudy room where guests were gathered for a pre-show drink. There were lots of Americans in there, and I was experiencing some reverse culture shock. The entertainment in that room was a singer accompanied by a guitarist in a robot suit. The toilet was all gold.

Not long after, guests were ushered into the area where the performances were to be held. There were three rows of guests on each side of a long stage. There were screens behind the guests which were used to complement the performance. The performance itself was, how should I say it... bizarre. It was a mixture of dance, drama, and acrobatics. There were robots, lasers, loud music, fights, and all manner of the theatrics. Some robots were futuristic, some were of animals, and some were just downright scary (think clowns, doll-like figures with scary big eyes, etc.). Words fail me. I can't even begin to describe what I saw. I was in a constant state of bewilderment, but it was all good fun. I was most certainly entertained.

After the show, I stumbled out onto a very wet Shinjuku. Many people, including myself, were carrying the generic white or clear plastic Japanese umbrellas. The rain and umbrellas, coupled with the neon lights and Japanese language, made for a very Blade Runner-esque street scene. It was surreal. Walking around Shinjuku, I found my go-to donburi and soba place, bought a ticket from the machine outside, and tucked into a very satisfying meal. After that, I turned in and had a good sleep.

      Shinjuku

      December 28, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Tokyo-ites are gearing up for the New Years holidays, and we are about to find out what the city is like at New Year...what is open, what is not, what is crowded, what is empty. We are staying the first two nights at the Hotel Gracery - home of the huge Godzilla statue in Shinjuku - one of Tokyo's liveliest districts.
Travelling days are stressful days - carting luggage around on crowded trains and spending quite a bit of time completely lost ! Early on we coined the new term "Japantrum" and have all had one more or less. Some pics here of the tour we took on our first day into Ningyocho, an older part of Japan with many traditional food and artisan shops. We tried New Year treats - cakes with red bean paste and amazake (sweet drink made from the residue from sake making).

      Day 2 - Ghibli, Shinjuku

      March 20, 2016 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Day 2 on the ground. We went to sensoji early and got to see it with few people around on our way to the train.
New train system via subway to mitaka (transfer at kanda) we met my friend again and went to Ghibli museum – its a cool place for a film teacher like me. I just wish i was allowed to photograph it. Anyway our 2yr was struggled with waiting in line for the cat bus play area. Other than that the kids enjoyed it. We saw our first cherry blossoms as inokashira park right next door. The bus from mitaka station to ghibli is easy to find. We stopped at shinjuku on our way back. It was crazy. They had closed off the streets to traffic and people were walking everywhere. Such a fun experience and some great photos. We saw what the basement food level of a department store is like omg!!! Double crazy town. Such exquisite food. A must do experience to blow your mind. On our return to Asakusa we again visited the 8th floor and nakamise street and sensoji at night for a different view.

We love 7-11 good snacks, umbrellas, and beer for hubby. Also atms are there. Getting the hang of train. We seem to be going through our credit very quickly and have recharged 3 times so far.

      Tokyo: Shinjuku (新宿区)

      April 3, 2018 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Whoever said Shinjuku Station was the busiest railway station in the world was not joking! After finding the station’s north exit we decided to get some dinner at Fuunji Ramen, an amazing local restaurant hidden between the city’s densest skyscrapers and brightest neon lights. We then started our journey in the hunt for Godzilla and robot monsters!Read more
