      Moses und die Kreuzritter

      Wir verließen Amman in Richtung Süden .Die Verkehrsverhältnisse waren wieder extrem, aus 3 Spuren wurden kurzerhand 5 Spuren und das im Kreisverkehr.
      Der Berg Nebo⛰️ war unser erstes Ziel .Hier blickte Moses auf das gelobte Land .Bei guter Sicht kann man bis nach Israel schauen ,aber leider war es heute nicht der Fall .😔
      Weiter ging es nach Madaba in die St.Georgskirche ⛪️wo sich die berühmte Mosaik -Landkarte befindet .Auf dem Weg dorthin hielten wir spontan an einer Mosaik Werkstatt an .Dort bekamen wir einen kurzen Einblick in die Herstellung der Mosaik Bilder und das in einem sehr holprigen Deutsch ,aber wir hatten viel Spaß. 😀
      Unser letztes Ziel für heute die Kreuzritterburg in Al Karak.Ein sehr schöner Ausblick von der gigantischen Ritterburg auf den Grand Ganyon Jordanien's .      Read more

      Von der Zitadelle Ammans herab schaut man auf das alte Zentrum. Dichte Bebauung und weniger alte erhaltene oder restaurierte Stätten sind hier zu finden. Man hat allerdings einen fabelhaften Blick in alle Richtungen auf die inzwischen über weit mehr als die ursprünglichen 7 Hügel auf denen Amman errichtet wurde.Read more

      Dead Sea

      Il Mar Morto, le cui acque bagnano Israele, la Cisgiordania e la Giordania, è un lago salato le cui rive si trovano 400 m sotto il livello del mare, il punto più basso al mondo sulla terraferma.       Wadi Mujib

      Halfway along the drive along the Dead Sea is the outlet of Wadi Mujib "Jordan's Grand Canyon ". They have set up an Adventure Centre and it was busy with young people getting kitted up in bathing suits and life jackets to go canyoning.

      The Dead Sea Highway is one of the three major national highways that run from the north to Aqaba. Stone cliffs running down to the vista of the Sea with its salt encrusted shoreline.      Read more

      "Kneippen" auf jordanische Art

      Die Ankündigung stieß auf Verwirrung. Wir fahren mit unserem Bus bis zu einem Ort, dort steigen wir in einen Kleinen um. Mitzunehmen: Wechselkleidung, kleine Flasche Wasser, Picknick (?) und Schuhe, die nass werden dürfen und Halt bieten: Turnschuhe, Trekkingsandalen (meine Wahl) oder Badeschuhe.

      Mit dem kleinen Bus ging es 40min auf abenteuerlichen Serpentinen (95% immerhin geteert 👍) knapp 200m steil den Berg hinab ins Wadi Ibn Hammad. Die Aussicht war grandios, aber nichts für schwache Nerven. Ich saß vor beim Fahrer und habe es genossen 🙂

      Mit dem Nötigsten am Mann und an der Frau - Handys und Kameras wasserdicht verpackt - ging es los auf die 2-stündige "Wanderung".
      Die steile Schlucht ist für jordanische Verhältnisse ungewöhnlich grün, weil aus den porösen Seitenfelsen ständig Wasser tropft und Moose und Farne am Leben erhält. Von unten funkeln durch das mineralische Wasser gefärbte bunte Felsen. Das Wasser ist Plantschbecken-warm und wird von warmen und kalten Quellen gespeist.
      Mal war das Wasser wirklich nur knöcheltief - wie in der Reisebeschreibung - doch manchmal stand ich bis über die Knie im warmen Fluss. Mal war die Strömung stärker, mal die Steine rutschiger, mal der nächste Schritt ins Unbekannte gesetzt. Nach gut 1 Stunde erreichten wir einen 3m hohen Wasserfall - unser Umkehrpunkt. Es gibt Touren, die weiter bis zum Toten Meer gehen. Dann muss man sich zwischenzeitlich abseilen.
      Es war eine großartige Wanderung und einmalige Erfahrung. Glückshormone pur 😊. Zudem begegneten wir nur zwei kleinen Gruppen. Dieses Wadi ist noch ein Geheimtipp. Niemand hat sich verletzt. Allerdings gab es materiellen Verlust: 5 Trekkingsandalen von 3 Besitzern sind gerissen.
      Während ich durch das Wasser watete, erinnerte ich mich an ein Schild am Flughafen des "Ministry of Health and Wellness". Was für eine schöne und treffende Bezeichnung 🙂      Read more

      Kerak Castle

      We arrived at Kerak Castle at around 11.30am and had a guided walk through the site with Sofyan.

      Kerak Castle is one of the largest medieval castles in the Middle East. It was built in 1142 and remained in constant use until 1917.

      In the early years, because of its position east of the Dead Sea, Kerak Castle was able to control bedouin herders as well as the trade routes from Damascus to Egypt and Mecca.

      In 1188, the castle came under the control of the Muslim army who made it their administrative headquarters. A century later, the Mamluk sultan, Baybars, took over. Due to the castle's importance, he maintained a significant military force there which included at least 700 horsemen.

      Kerak Castle remained an important strategic location during the centuries of the Ottoman Empire.

      In 1834, the leaders of the peasants' revolt in Palestine took refuge in Kerak. Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt besieged the castle and destroyed much of its fortifications in the process.

      In 1893, the Ottoman authorities reestablished control over the area by appointing a governor resident in Kerak Castle with a garrison of 1400, including 200 cavalry. He remained in charge until the Ottoman Empire fell.

      Since then, the castle has been the site of extensive archaeological and historical research.

      On December 18, 2016, the castle was the site of a terrorist attack. Fourteen people were killed and 34 were injured, the majority being Jordanian security forces and local civilians. A Canadian tourist was also killed.

      After our tour of the castle, we had lunch in the on-site restaurant. It was a set menu of salads followed by barbecue. It was lovely but there was far too much food!!      Read more

      Kerak Castle

      From the rather sad and sadly named Potash City, I turned inland for another spectaclular and steep climb (I reckon an average 10% grade) up to the plateau..

      The hill at Kerak, having such a command over the countryside has been fortified and used by successive peoples going back to prehistory, but it was the Crusaders who built the massive Kerak Castle as one in a string of castles running from south to north to provide an outer line of defense and control the access and trade routes.. It was started in 1144 and took 20 years to build which is quick given the size, isolated location and the fact the Crusaders were outsiders with no access to a large labour force. In the end, the Crusaders only held the site for a little over 40 years, falling to a months-long siege by the Muslims in 1188. After, it continued as an important fort for the Ayyubids, Mamluks and Ottomans.

      It is a massive structure with 6m thick walls and multiple levels under the castle with tunnels and passages connecting dozens of rooms you can wander around..      Read more

      Castello di Kerak

      La costruzione del Castello di Kerak ebbe inizio negli anni quaranta del XII secolo per iniziativa di Pagano, vassallo del re Folco, e fu nota col nome di Petra Deserti. Il castello sorge nella città di al-Karak, in Giordania. I Crociati lo chiamarono Crac dei Moabiti o Kerak di Moab, nomi con cui spesso viene indicato nei libri di storia. A tal proposito bisogna puntualizzare che il castello di Kerak non va confuso con il Krak dei Cavalieri, una fortezza militare situata nell'odierna Siria.Read more

      Und los geht die wilde Fahrt durch Jordanien. Wir durchqueren Berge, Schluchten, grüne Täler, Steinwüsten, Steppen, Städtchen und 3857 Bodenwellen vom Niveau 400m unterm Meeresspiegel bis 1600m über dem Meeresspiegel. Und das ganze in vier Stunden. Wir machen auf der Kreuzritterburg in Kerak halt und noch ein paarmal zum Essen, Kaffee mit Kardamom trinken, Fotos machen und einfach nur staunen.Read more
