    September 24, 2018 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌧 77 °F

Today we picked up Matt from Wildwood Church in E Moline, Illinois.

Before going to the airport, Glenn and I went to San Kris mall to the grocery store to get a few items. Then to the frame store to get 4 cross stitch items framed. One is the huge project I made for Thomas and his graduation. Then we went to get the Terracan washed and Glenn walked to the bank to get some money. Our last stop before the airport was SETECA.

Matt flew in on Delta Airlines from Atlanta arriving just after 1pm. We told him to look for Glenn wearing his Croatia red/white checkered baseball cap. Sure enough it worked.

It took us a good hour to drive through traffic and get out of town. We stopped at Pollo Campero in the drive thru to pick up some chicken and eat it as we were driving out of the city. Man, it took forever to drive thru Chimaltenango. We stopped to fill up with gas (at Jim’s favorite gas station) in Chimal and also stretch our legs. We pulled off and drove thru GBS. The Johnsons or Murphys were not there. But I found the ladies-room!

We continued on the road to Pana and made another potty stop at Paulinos and Glenn got coffee and I bought banana chips.

We decided not to go the “back way” because it looked like it was raining over the mountains.

We arrived at LBN just before sunset and quickly unpacked. We’re staying in the “Stone house”.

I had made and frozen my Mexican casserole 3 days ago, so I put that in the oven.

    Casa del Mundo and Santago

    September 25, 2018 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

This morning Glenn negotiated a private boat to take the three of us to Casa Del Mundo and then on to Santiago and back to Panajachel. It was a beautiful morning as we traveled across Lake Atitlan to eat breakfast.

I am thankful that the lake has risen a little bit and I didn’t have to climb as many steps up to the restaurant. I ordered my usual breakfast which is French Toast made with homemade bread. Yum! And I had my smoothie with strawberries, banana and pina. (Insert happy face). Glenn and Matt ordered typical Guatemala meal with tortillas. We were there for about 1.5 hours just enjoying a peaceful meal with stunning view with the volcanoes in the backdrop.

Our next stop was Santiago, the village where the Foote family lived a while back. I think it’s been about 5 years since I have been back. Once we jumped off the boat, we walked up the street to El Sol restaurant and waited for David to pick us up. We only had to wait 20 minutes or so until he arrived. He drove us to his home/orphanage other is perched on the back side of the volcano about 15 minutes out of town. He and his wife live on a compound where there are several houses. He has a family of 5 kids ages 2mo to 8 years plus 22 Guatemalan children that live in the 9bedroom house. David and Deborah are doing a fantastic job

Our purpose is to introduce Matt to several different ministries here in Guatemala where he could bring down a work team from the church.

We were invited for lunch, but had just eaten bfast! There was organized chaos. Imagine feeding your 5 kids and then 22 other mouths every day? I did hear the dryer running. I’m sure the washing machine runs constantly. After the meal, the parents retreated up to their bedroom for 30min of solitude and prayer. I guess you would need a lot of prayer. There was no spilled juice at the table - the only incident was one of the toddlers sitting in the high chair “wet her pants”, she is in the process of being potty trained. Every one served themselves and were obedient during the meal time sitting at the long table. Afterwards, everyone cleared their plate with no complaints. 2 kids were loading the dishwasher while 1 kid swept the floor and another kid folded the chairs away.

I walked away from this experience feeling fully drained. My heart is mixed, when I see these precious kids living in a children’s home, but my heart smiles when I see the love they are getting and experiencing community as a family.

The afternoon trip back across the lake was very rough. High waves. Glenn took Matt to Mike’s coffee shop and for a walk.

  • Day 3

    Campamento and San Antonio Palapo

    September 26, 2018 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌧 72 °F

Today, Glenn had Matt driving from LBN to the camp. I stayed back and did some correspondence and computer work.

The guys got a tour of the camp. They met the care taker and saw some guys planting trees. There is a youth retreat there this weekend.

After the camp, Glenn drove to Solala and stopped at Vina and got a tour by Sarah Agee Johnson. Glenn’s dad and Sarah’s grandfather worked together in Mexico. Vina is a location/ministry where they put the Bible into finger puppets. Kinda like the Jesus film-into many different languages.

We had left over Mexican casserole for lunch. After a quick nap, we headed to San Antonio Palopó to go to the pottery shop and Nancy’s store. This time we got a tour of the factory where they make the mugs, vases and crosses. Very interesting.

Next stop was Nancy. Manuela was working the weaving machine. We had Matt dress up in the native garb.

We stopped at Casa Palopó for smoothie. It was 5pm by now and I gently begged Glenn to stay and watch the sunset from there. Breathtaking!

As we drove back to Pana, we got stuck on some side streets that were getting narrower and narrower because they we setting up for the circus that was coming into town for the weekend. Glenn managed to get us back home. We had sandwiches and leftovers for dinner.

We plan to leave at 6am to head to pick up Patricia tomorrow morning. Big day ahead. Fun day today.

From Pana to Chivoc to home

    September 27, 2018 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌧 68 °F

We left LBN at 6:15. I went outside the gate to take sunrise fotos. Beautiful! It was cloudy when we drove over the pass, but we arrived at Patricia by 9:30am to continue on to Natalie’s home.

Glenn had WAZE on to help us navigate through the mountainous roads through the corn fields and up and over the mountain ridges. We got to Natalie’s home within 1 hour and she had breakfast for us.

Natalie fixed scrambled eggs and hotdogs with hot chocolate. Glenn pulled out the milk, cereal, and bread to donate for breakfast. We sat around the table and talked about mission teams, mission projects, and our experiences with church teams here in Guatemala.

After a quick lunch/brunch we all piled into Natalie’s car for her to drive us to Chivoc and see the school she works at. Natalie teaches English in the Chivoc village. She also has responsibilities at her church.

Natalie drove us around the 3 ridges explaining how about 30-40 years ago the Guatemala military came to the village and said to the folks that the military was going to take their fertile land and they would be displaced for 2 ridges over. So now there is a ‘new Chivoc’.

We picked up Alex as he was walking up the hill to school to take a test. He was apart of the robotics team that traveled to Houston earlier this year and now he is being offered a full scholarship in the city.

We have a very quick tour of the area. Natalie drove like a true Guatemalan. I’m very proud of her ministry here. She’s great.

We drove back to San Lucas to drop Patricia off and then on our way home we pulled into San Kris mall to pick up some groceries.

We left the house st 6:45, picking up Bob H at his house and we arrived at SETECA at 8:00am in time for the 8:30 graduation awards program.

The Stoddard’s got an award for their 10 years of service and Gary Williams for his 40 years service.

We got a plaque to take back to Dallas and give to Ron Blue. We walked quickly around the SETECA campus and shared stories.

Next stop was the cemetery. We stoped by the CAM grave site and mention those names buried there, like Wayne Berger, Pauline Williams, and the infant baby buried there.

What is the - between your birthday and day of your death?

Next stop was the city dump. Lots of buzzards flying overhead. Then we headed to Casita Benjamin, day care facility that CAM started 40+ years ago and it is keeps 6mo to 6yr old kids whose parents work in the dump. Lola gave us the tour. We drove by Potter’s House.

Our next stop was Media Cancha however it was closed for 2 weeks. We quickly called Bob and settled on Tony Roma’s for lunch. We had a delightful lunch with them as Matt asked questions about teams coming to Guatemala.

After a quick trip to PriceSmart, we returned home. Glenn took Matt over to Alejandro’s place and to hear his story. Then they visited Bob and got a tour there.

We had leftovers for supper and watched a Netflix show “the good cop”
