• Road Trip to Sayulita!

    11 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

GAHS: When researching our trip, the old boy had discovered a funky little town north of PV that was highly recommended by Trip Advisor. And so, in honor of my birthday we booked a room and hopped on the bus to make our way to Sayulita. It would have cost us $500 pesos to take a cab (@$35 CAD) but we opted to save some money and take a bus for$81 pesos/person. One would expect to be dropped off right in the town of Sayulita ... but ... no. We were dropped off on the highway a few kilometers from the town site. I couldnt see any taxis anywhere so we wandered over to the gas station.

GRATITUDES: Thank goodness a women on a motor cycle directed us to the line up of white multi-passenger vans lined up across the road. THEY were the taxis. Once we got close enough you could see the very wee, tiny taxi symbol faintly painted in front of the driver's door!!! Sheesh .... it cost us a other 70 pesos to get from the highway to the hotel! The price of the cab seems quite reasonable in retrospect. Such are the joys of travel. 🙄

Sayulita has a very laid back, hippy vibe ... lots of artisans and locals selling their wares in quaint little shops that smell of incense and/or essential oils. The streets are lined with tables jutting out of restaurants and bars ... hoping to capture the tourists.

GIFTS: We had some time to kill before we could check into our room so the old boy was in search of a good fish taco (again!!) and was recommended to try a little hole in the wall ... literally... a little hole in the wall on the corner. It was called Taco Gaby's. And well .... it was oh so good ... that we might have to go back!!! Oh ... and the taco cost 25 pesos. He had one later in a restaurant on the beach that cost 200 pesos! I probably don't even have to tell you which one was better, do I?

We srolled the streets and found a Christmas ornament and then eagerly ventured over to our hotel to check in! Its always a bit nerve racking because you never really know, until you arrive, if you'll be happy with the room you booked. AND .... we were not the least bit disappointed with the room ... but .... the clouds moved in and the wind picked up and we probably won't need the a/c tonight after all.

Our balcony overlooks the ocean and we were hoping to have a little beach time today ... but ... fingers crossed the sun shines again tomorrow because we were able to get a late day check out (5pm!) in hopes we'd be able to take advantage of the amenities here. 🤞🤞

Before we headed out to supper we enjoyed the view from our balcony ... lots of people surfing in this area!! We went to "Mary's" for supper based upon the rave reviews ... but most disappointingly ... it was really salty. 😔 Fortunately, we have not yet had any ill effects ... and ... bought some homemade banana bread from a fellow walking the streets. It was delicious!!

And ... although we rushed home in hopes of having a great vantage point to see the sunset ... the mountain impeded our view. We are not complaining though ... because the sights from our balcony are still pretty darn spectacular!!

Good night from Sayulita .... 💛

  • Belly Laughs and Bus Rides!

    10 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

GRINS AND GIGGLES: There is nothing quite as delightful as starting the day with big old belly laughs. 😂🤣 This is the price we are paying from sharing space with such great senses of humor! 😁😀

GALLAVANTS: Some of our amigos were ready to laze by the pool ... but I was missing my cream in my coffee this morning so the old boy and I hopped a bus to see if we could find some at Walmart. And, it took us about 6 hours before we walked through the checkout at Walmart with it!

GIFTS: We found ourselves back at the Marina to pick up a new belt for the old boy ... and then ... it was so hot already that we needed some refreshments! We landed in some comfy chairs with a slushy mango margarita and a lime one on the rocks! Summers!!!

And then, as we were headed on foot to the Walmart, we found ourselves stepping onto the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus! We have always enjoyed getting a better sense of the lay of the land and popping on and off when the mood strikes. We only popped off once .... it was so darn hot .... we were drawn to wander through the waves and let the water cool our legs! It was absolutely lovely!

GOODNESS: And then ... we had a short wait before we could get back on the bus .... so ... we stopped for a little vino blanco! We sipped on a couple glasses and put the rest in our trusty go- cup to enjoy on the bus! 😉😍

GASPS: It was a bit cloudier when we got back up on the double-decker so we stayed on until they invited off for a "short 10 minute stop." Little did I know it was a money making venture for the locals with the Iguanas! 😬

GRATITUDE: It truly was an exceptional day! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Laundry Day .....

    9 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

GOOD GOLLY: The weather has heated up and so have our arm pits .... so ... the laundry has been quickly accumulating! And so, we packed up the fixings for sandwiches 🥪 and headed over to our new amigos who are at the Marina to use their stackable washer, dryer and outdoor patio with drying rack!

And well, as you can see by the pics .... doing laundry has never been so gruelling. 🤥 Jacky and I only had one load each ... so ... imagine my surprise to see that it took two dips in the pool and nearly a whole 750ml bottle of Pinot Grigio to get the job done! 😁🥂 It took a little longer for things to dry ... so we even wandered over to a book store and had a nice espresso.

GARGANTUAN GOODNESS: We finished up the day with a burger and fries at the outdoor burger joint on the corner. No walls .... just a few tables and lots of toppings and some really happy customers! 🍔🍟🥤

GROANS: The cream that we bought wasn't good for the coffee ... we'll have to save it for salsa and chips instead!

GASPS: We noticed a few critters throughout the day. A small crocodile lazing in the sun, an iguana camouflaged on the rocks and two more up a tree! I can'tadd any more pics here so I'll post the pics in an aside ....

GOOD NIGHT to all from warm and wonderful PV! 🌅

  • On the hunt ...

    8 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

GALLAVANTING: It's hard to believe that today is already our 5th day here! Our Mexican mission for today was to pick up a few things we needed. A couple of the items proved to be entirely elusive!!

    1. Toaster ... they provided one in our condo but it doesn't work. We looked for one yesterday, to no avail, at the Mega store. We were convinced we'd be able to find one at Walmart ... but alas ... no. I guess the locals favor tortillas over toast , so toasters aren't stocked on the shelves here. Oscar, the concierge at Walmart, assured us we could get one at "Liverpool" (which we learned is the Mexican version of Macy's). And, well, Oscar was absolutely correct. The problem was that it was a glossy, red enameled version ... clearly very upscale in the world of toasters priced at 8900 pesos ... which is nearly $63 CAD!! 😲 And so .... we were told to try another grocery store called Soriano. It was too hot to walk all the way over today ... so ... the only thing that will be toasty today is the tourists! 😉

    2. We ran out of coffee cream today. We didn't expect it to be a problem to replace .... but .... we had no luck with finding cream either. We stopped at no less than 5 places and could not find any. We finally settled for something that might work (Pookie can you tell me what it is?) .... but .... I'll get back to you tomorrow morning! It's time for cool drinks now instead!

GIGGLES: Which brings me back to our game of Cut throat Coaster Collecting. I successfully pulled into the coaster collection lead by purchasing a 4 pack of purple rubber mesh placemats at Walmart yesterday. I cut them up into 48 coasters. Finny only has 4 so far ... 😏. I don't expect my amigos are going to let me walk away with the win this easily! I'll keep you posted on this as well!

GRATITUDES: We also checked out the Municipal Market .... got some potatoes and green beans to serve aside our roasted pollo ... and ... some fresh mangos for our smoothies in the morning! The markets are always so amazing .... we saw some plump prawns and are planning to get them for another day!

And then, we opted to head home to our palapia to escape the heat and dip into the pool. All in all, it was a nice relaxing day that filled our spirits despite our lack of success in finding things. Perhaps tomorrow? 😊

  • Wandering the Malecon into Romantica

    7 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

After a nice chorizo and mushroom omelette at our favorite local restaurant, we hopped the bus down to enjoy the Malecon and the Romantic zone. It was a great day for seeing the sights,

    Highlights of our day:
    *Hausy found his mangos
*John loved the marlin and shrimp kabobs ... and was tempted to get a spicy mango skewer but restrained himself. BTW ... it was the only moment he resisted the urge to indulge in the experiences that presented themselves today!
*Jacky thought the coconut shrimp at Gaby's was the "ultimate"
*Finny's funny bone was tickled by all the t-shirts tackling Trump on the Malecon
*Karen couldn't get enough of the views and the abundance of good wine available in the Romantica zone!

But .... wait ... we forgot to mention the fabulous Maui Maui fish tacos at "The Sea Monkey". The server assured us he'd bet double or nothing that we'd love them .... and .... they did not disappoint one little bit. And, listening to the saxophonist playing in the background was so enchanting too! 💖

I shall not name names but there may or may not have been some pilfering of rubber coasters today! Coasters are essential in this climate because the glasses and bottles sweat so much in the heat and leave water rings everywhere. Unfortunately, we don't have any at the condo but once again, I shall not disclose if there were or were not any wagers on how many could be acquired today! 😉

It was a great day in terms of weather ... everyone is looking a little sun kissed today. I'm looking forward to more good weather and equally wonderful experiences in the days to come! BTW ... look at the way the rocks have been balanced on the beach! Absolutely unbelievable. 😲

  • Another day in the neighborhood ...

    6 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Well ... not entirely! We started out in "Rustico" Mexico and then hopped another local bus and adventured out to "Americano" Mexico after breakfast! Our friends have friends staying in a luxurious condo at the Marina and our plan was to meet up with them first ... and then ... meet up with other friends from back home for drinks at one of the lovely restaurants that frame the edges of the horse-shoe shaped marina.

GOODIES: We didn't want to arrive empty handed so we stopped at a grocery store to get some wine ... and that was when John discovered the bakery! So, after observing the customs in the baked good section ... John put his selections onto his silver tray and waited in line for bagging. I'm not sure why he did so, though, 'cuz one this items didn't land in the bag for more than a second before he was happily wandering the store sharing his large cookie very generously! Oh ... and it was fun to see that the Mexican people are wise enough to put the whole party in a box! You can buy one bottle of wine with four stemmed glasses! I've never seen anything like that before! Clearly, they realize that wine never tastes quite as good out of a cup. Well .... except if it's your go-cup when you are on vacation! 😉

GUFFAHS: One of my Mexican missions for today as we headed to the more touristy area was to find a really, really good margarita! The one I had on the beach was pretty good ... but ... not 'to-die-for delicious like the ones I remembered having in San Antonio when I first discovered that I could actually even enjoy them. So, when we reconnected with Rod and Janine I ordered a margarita, but then, remembering that I am a top shelf tequila girl, I pointed to the Patron on the menu to ensure I got the tequila that pleased my picky palate. Somehow .... when all was said and done, I ended up with a tequila highball in a short glass. It was tasty .... but nonetheless ... I'm still on the search for the ultimate fish-bowl shaped stemware filled with a slushy cold margarita! 🍹🍹

GRINS: Every Thursday they line the edges Marina with a fabulous market! It was phenomenal to sit on our friends balcony, sipping cool beverages on a warm, sunny day (no rain!) and watch them set up endless rows of white tents filled with marvelous Mexican markerables for the event. Gosh ... it was so fun to wander and shop and eat and enjoy! John discovered a taco stand ... loved it so much we went back for more! The vendor even asked if they could put a picture of us on their Facebook page. We smiled for the camera but were were so eager to gobble up our goodies that I never even asked what the name of their company even was .... duh. 🙄

GRIPES: I also forgot to mention that the humidity has been so high with all the rain that John's phone alerted him that his phone or his charger had moisture in them. So .... it refused to change until we got it dried out!! 😩😵 It actually took the better part of the day for us to get it up and running again! But ... at least it did! Yahoo!!! 🤩

All in all, it was such a great day ... we never got home until about 9:00ish. And, I was too tired to post this blog .... so ... here I am doing it with my morning coffee instead. The weather is supposed to be great so I can hardly wait to see what joys await us today!!! 🤗

  • Gifts Galore!!

    5 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

GIFTS: I's my birthday today!! And ... I was surprised to see I wasn't ready to raise until I'd been in my little twin bed for almost almost 11 hours. I swear that when all your usual habits and routines are also on vacation, there is nothing quite as refreshing while travelling as a nice restful sleep! And then ... I awoke to a beautiful surprise! I've been trying to find another pair of silver hoops .... wanted some that are a bit bigger than my favorites. John surprised me with a pair he got in Costco ... and .... they are PERFECT!

GRINS: Oh, when we arrived, we stopped at the grocery store to get a nice beverage to celebrate our arrival. There were lots of beers and coolers and various alcoholic beverages ... but NO wine. 🥺 I was reduced to sipping on John's beer to commence the Mexican style fun and frolic! And while I got so excited about how much I enjoyed my slushy lime margarita on the beach yesterday ... I forgot to mention that we found some wine for me after all. 😍 I haven't tasted it yet ... but we got it at the Farmacia! Who would have thought?? 🤔 Oh ... wait .... Jody reminded me that tequila is medicinal! 😁 Maybe all alcohol is considered to be so here in PV??? 😜😉

GLOATS: Our day commenced with a beautiful breakfast at home ... and then .... because it had rained so much and was threatening to keep raining until late afternoon, we packed up some drinks and snacks and headed out to the palapia (cabana) to play one of our favorite card games! When we were out in Pittsburgh in October, Rod and Barb taught us to play "Golf"... and we love it!! And well ... at the risk of gloating too obnoxiously ... the birthday girl kicked all their asses on the front nine! Not that I'm competitive! 😉 Leroy is convinced that things will change when we play the last nine holes ... but ... I'm claiming this victory unabashedly ... until such thing happens.

GRATITUDES: After that, we wandered down the street to get a nice baguette from the bakery to go with the roast chicken and tossed salad and gouda cheese for supper. This delicious spread was followed up with a lovely rendition of "Happy Birthday" as they presented me with a platter of chocolate for dessert.

I've been banished from the kitchen today ('cuz I'm the birthday girl) and have been thoroughly appreciating all the messages and birthday sentiments that have been so generously gifted to me throughout the day!

And ... after supper we headed out for a lovely little walk ... tried some pork that was being roasted streetside like a donair and figured out how to get to Sayulita from here! All in all it was such a relaxing day ... and ... a great way to spend my birthday!

    With warmest smiles ... k&j

  • Our first Official Day in PV

    4 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

GRATITUDES: My tablet is not acting up .... so ... here I am with a little update from our first official day of vacation here in PV. We started with wonderful breakfast just down the street from our condo! The server had to find someone who could speak English because we are staying in a local neighborhood where English is not typically spoken.

GAHS: I enjoyed a couple of eggs with a side of beans sprinkled with cheese. There was salad on my plate .... but ... I was afraid it might have been washed with local water, so although it looked fresh and scrumptious, I wasn't brave enough to give it a go. The other had lovely omelets ... with ham and mushrooms and peppers. However, I wasn't a fan of John's because it was made with weiners! 😬 Other than that, I enjoyed our breakfast immensely.

GALAVANTING: After that, we hopped on a local bus ... costing 10 pesos each (70 cents) and took us it took us down to the old "Centro"downtown area. We found a beautiful little restaurant on the beach where we could sip our drinks with our toes in the sand overlooking the ocean! It was two-for-one happy hour! I dared to have a lime margarita (crushed ice and all!) And, I'm happy to say ... so far so good! We also had some delicious coconut shrimp skewers and John had some Marlin tacos that he said were fabulous. And .... no rain!!!

GIFTS: After that we wandered the streets and enjoyed the moments that the day offered. We logged almost 10 km wandering around before we hopped on another local bus to get us home. It was a lovely lovely day and a great introduction to PV!!

And we're back at the condo now the boys have headed over to the pool to cool off and we're going to join them in chaise lounges poolside. The palapia at this condo is really very nice!! The boys headed off to get a pizza to go from up the street! We're hoping they get back before the rain starts!! They're calling for rain overnight and well into the afternoon tomorrow ... but so far so good!

I'm heading to bed early and looking very forward to see what tomorrow brings! Good night for now ...k & j

  • And So It Begins!

    4 Şubat 2020, Meksika ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

GRIPES: Day 1 is a day late ...........so .... it is being posted as Day 2! 🤨

GROANS: I was a little dismayed as we packed and prepared to leave. As in my prior post, 40 to 50 mms of rain was forecast for Puerto Vallarta. And then... the day before the weather forecast changed! They were now expecting 100mms ... with 100% probability. I reminded myself we had 2 full weeks ... we we going to get good weather eventually!!

Our departure day got off to a bit of a rough start! I had been struggling with my Samsung tablet prior to leaving! I was beyond frustrated because it kept restarting itself in Safe Mode. It concerned me that perhaps one of my apps was corrupted but I couldn't isolate the problem. I tried everything that Googlr recommended. It would work for a while and then go back into safe mode!!😩🤯

GRRRRS: I got to thinking maybe it was the device ... so ... I got a brand new one the day before we left. The smile had returned to my face when I had it all loaded up. We were just getting ready to leave and there was an update recommended. So ... at 5:20am, just before we headed out the door, I did the update on my brand new tabletand guess what??? It reopened in Safe mode. I think I dropped a few very unladylike expletives that I will leave out of this narrative. 😰😱

I wasn't even going to bring it along ... but decided to do so. I thought I'd try to fix it one more time. So ... got to the airport ... prepared for a fight. And guess what .... it restarted just fine!! Whatttttttt??😁😜🤗 I could not control the smoke on my face!!

GRATITUDES: And so ... we hopped on the plane ... and after a bit of a delay with de-icing we were up and away! All was well until we landed. Our taxi driver had no idea where our Airbnb was located. We had given him the address ... it was just 10 minutes from the airport. About 40 minutes later I cued up Foogle Maps and we found I!

We were so damn happy to arrive! And ... with one sleep under our belt, we are ready to start the vacation!! I'll talk to you later... hopefully ... as long as my tablet keeps working!😉

  • Uhmmmm ??? Weather ???

    1 Şubat 2020, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

GROANS: We are two sleeps away from leaving ... and ... look at the weather forecast!! 40-50 mms of rain expected to greet us upon our arrival. And then, another 10 to 15mms for us to enjoy on my birthday. 😟

GAH: Fingers crossed that things improve! John says I shouldn't look up the weather forecast in advance. Perhaps he is correct ... 🙄

GIGGLES: Well ... upon further reflection ... wet + warm = perfect bathing suit weather! Maybe I should layer my clothes over my tankini so I can strip down to something more sensible when we get off the plane?? 🤔😂

  • Our Final Hours ...

    22 Ekim 2019, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We awoke to the sound of rain falling gently  ... and ... had a nice, lazy start to the day.

We sipped coffee and chatted while Rod prepared us a nice breakfast. After some spirited discussion, Barb arrived home from work, we had a nice lunch and were off to the airport ... with a quick stop at REI store to see about socks! 😉

Barb had indicated she had purchased some great socks there for hiking ... and well ... since I had just got some new hiking shoes ... I clearly needed appropriate socks. 😁

While we were there we got looking at day packs for hiking.  They had a nice Osprey Women's 24 liter bag that seemed perfect for our Camino. It was $130.00 US currency. We checked the price on Amazon.ca to see if it would be cheaper to buy it in Canada.  We were absolutely aghast to discover it was $369.00 CAD!!

So ... we thought it wise to take it. Since we had no room to pack it, I thought I'd just wear it. Thank goodness I did!  Turns out that I needed the men's version to accommodate my football shoulders! Gah. We'll need to do some fiddling to get the fit just right ... but ... I am excited because now I have all I need to start training for our walk.  I'll be able to break in my shoes and get accustomed to wearing a back pack!

Our flight was scheduled to leave on time ... which was good because our layover I'm Minneapolis/StPaul was only 1 hour and 3 minutes. Our second flight was in a new Delta plane .... very roomy!! We even had TVs in the seat backs with not just movies ... but ... games, music, TV series and even live TV!  It was great because I caught the last half hour of The Voice tonight! It was one of the nicest flights we've had in terms of comfort ... and ... we even landed 20 minutes early!!

And ... in our final hours we enjoyed three seamless flights, three super smooth landings and the luggage arrived when we did! All in all, ait would have been a perfect way to end a lovely vacation ... except on the car ride home ... we nearly ran into two deer that were crossing 43rd street in the dark!!! Yikes!! Thanks to my husbands keen eye he noticed the first one and slammed on the brakes ... only to have another one trot out in front of us!! Gah!! 😖

On a more positive note ... the adrenaline in our system will keep us wide awake for the drive home! 🤪

  • Out and About ...

    20 Ekim 2019, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I awoke to discover that something had bitten me on the back of the neck ... it was swollen into a hard, reddened lump but didn't itch. Normally it would not have alarmed me, but deer ticks are so very prevalent here ... and ... so is checking for ticks! My preference was to get a Christmas tree ornament for a souvenir of our trip ... not Lymes Disease!

After Barb assessed it, I felt less concerned and since she had some errands to run, John and I sat in the warm morning sun sipping on tea and reflecting upon our trip! There have been so many beautiful experiences and we feel very grateful for each and every one!

BTW ... I have been meaning to mention that
gas costs only about $.80/litre here and when we left home it was $1.14/ litre! We have been trying really hard to make sense of this. So far, we have had no luck.🤨

After that we went to the Walking Store. I was looking forward to going because they carry Obeo shoes ... great walking shoes ... and I needed to get do.e new walking sandals, replace my running shoes ... and ... get some hiking shoes I can start to break in for our Camino walk next year! I also discovered Dansko shoes at this store! Super comfortable for me with my narrow feet and super high arches! And ... lucky for me ... Barb was exceptionally patient! We were in that store for about 1.5 hours ... but ... I found four pair!!! 🤗

John even got a pair that he raved about for the rest of the day. Normally, his knees will bother him if he walks too far, but the orthopedic inserts made a huge difference for him! He was shocked that as we wandered through the day that he experienced no knee pain!

We then enjoyed a great lunch at Atria .... one of Rod's favorite lunch spots. And then we were off to Oakmont Bakery ... in search of dessert! And the choices were staggering. It took three pictures to capture the length of the options!!

And after a short stop at one of their properties we were off to a local spot in Wilkensburg! And
... I have to acknowledge that the dry, hot wings at Salvatore's were the biggest, juiciest, tenderest, crispiest and tastiest wings I have had the pleasure of gobbling up! Not the least bit greasy ... 😋

And then we headed home for more feasting! Lobster bisque, scallops in a lovely sauce, home made potato pancakes, grilled veggies, squash ... and ... a plate of our choices from the bakery!!

Yes ... we sipped and nibbled and shopped the day away! It was terrific!! Its supposed to rain tomorrow but, it's been remarkable because we have enjoyed shirt sleeve weather since we arrived! We have half a day left before we head home with loads of great memories! 💛

  • Savoring the Sights ....

    20 Ekim 2019, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Our morning began by bidding farewell to Art and Michele. They got off to an early start because they have a 40 hour drive back home! We certainly enjoyed all the good laughs over our short time together!

After our good-byes Rod and Barb, took us down for an exceptional brunch on the Grand Concourse at Station Square to celebrate John's birthday. It was spectacular in size and selection and scrumptiousness! 😋

Afterwards, we wandered through Phipps Conservatory and were absolutely stunned by the artistry and elegance of the foliage displays!!

We also wandered through some of the culturally decorated classrooms at the University of Pittsburgh and were awed by the stained class at the Heinz Chapel.

We returned home for a nap ... and ... then enjoyed a lovely supper with Stev, Lyndsey and their boys. Unfortunately, the only picture we got of our dinner can't be posted because it was taken as a screen shot by accident and this App refuses to load it! 😞

On a more positive note, Rod's salmon was unrivaled ... as was the conversation! For those of you who are familiar with the Myers Briggs Personality Indicator ... Lyndsey is also an INFJ ... so the conversation is deep as we tend to experience the world in very similar ways!

It was an extraordinary day in terms of the weather so we even ate outdoors ... on October 20th ... and finished up the evening with a nice fire and a hand or two of cards!

All in all, it was such a great day. We feel like we got a good taste of Pittsburgh today! And ... we are off to bed early so we are recharged and ready for one more full day here! 😴😴😴

  • Pleasures in Pittsburgh

    19 Ekim 2019, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

We enjoyed such a nice evening reconnecting with Art, Michele , Rod and Barb! And after a short but nice sleep we sipped some coffee and enjoyed a really nice breakfast!! Art posed the question of what our best moment of the year has been. It sparked some interesting conversation!!

And then, we hopped into Barb's Mini and headed off to "The Strip". It was gloriously sunny and warm and we wandered and sipped and ate our way up and down it. We even enjoyed the signature Primanti Brothers sandwich of Pittsburgh ... you have to squish it to be able to eat it!!

And then we picked up all the fixings for our meals tonight and tomorrow! Such fun to shop in such specialty stores and fresh markets!

After a brief stop at the house, we headed out to 'Top Golf' to swing some clubs and enjoy a little competitive fun and games. And then a night light tour of the city on the way home!!

And ... we capped it all off with a lovely cheese fondue! Looking forward to what tomorrow brings!

  • Flight Without Feathers

    18 Ekim 2019, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

And so ... when we awoke this morning the rain had stopped and it occurred to me that we might be able to zipline after all! I got so nervous that I couldn't eat my breakfast... and ... forgot to put my eyebrows on!! 😬

And then ... it happened! And it was fabulous!! And we got a video... but ... it's too long to add here! I am so glad I found the courage to do it!

After that high ... we headed across the Rainbow Bridge into New York State on our way to Pittsburgh. The drive was lovely ... and ... the highway was lined with the blessings of Autumn colors!

All was going well until we were about 7 minutes away from the Airport where we needed to return our car rental. I had used the Google maps link for the Enterprise Car Rental Return Location supplied by Expedia. Well ... it took us to some remote hangar ... no where near where we needed to be! After another unsuccessful attempt to use the GPS to guide us ... we stopped a passerby and asked for directions!! What should have been a 7 minute drive took almost 45 minutes!! 😫

Nonetheless, Rod and Barb were patiently waiting for us and we have landed here for the next few days! We had a lovely evening with family and look forward to our time together. I have no idea how long it has been since we've been up this late! 😉

  • Drizzling and Damp, but oh so Delightful

    17 Ekim 2019, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Well our last full day in Niagara Falls has been dark and cool and windy! For breakfast, we opted to bundle up and head up Clifton Hill (which resembles an amusement park in terms of bright lights, wax museums, spook houses, and arcades etc) because we could see an IHOP sign from our vantage point on the 20th floor of our hotel. We ordered two breakfast plates and two coffees ... and ... it cost us $65!!! Yes. You read that right. Coffee was $4/cup ... our crepes and pancakes and eggs were almost $20 each ... add HST and GST and a tip = $65. 🙄 I wish I could say it was so delicious that it was worth it... but ... no.

After breakfast we opted to wander down to view things from "Behind the Falls". I've attached a video to give you a sense of our experience. Yes. It was wet ... but ... worth it! 🤗

We could have taken the "WeGo" bus ... but ... we logged a few more steps on foot in the rain ... dreaming of a good pizza for lunch. We stopped to ask one of the Niagara staff where to go ... they suggested Papa John's (even though Boston Pizza was right next door and 'Pizza Pizza' was right across the street.) Hmmmm. 🤔

We took the young man's advice and brought our pizza back to our room and settled in most comfotably by the floor to ceiling windows enjoying the Falls ... warm and dry with our Fireplace keeping us toasty and comfortable all the while. 🔥🔥🔥 And ... by golly ... the young man knew his pizza!! It was so good we kept on eating!! We thought we'd have leftovers to eat on the drive tomorrow ... but ... not likely!😏

We really enjoyed the laziness of the day and decided to go get a burrito from Freshi and bring it back to the room for supper!! A nice hot jacuzzi followed by a Pay per view movie (The Art of Racing in the Rain) = lovely way to spend a damp and dreary drizzling day.

And oh my gosh ... if you have not seen that unforgettable masterpiece of a movie ... be sure to gift your spirit by seeing it. I cannot do it justice with mere words ... but ... it is one of the most heartachingly beautiful stories of love ... depicting the complexities and layers and depths of its rich intricacies. 🙌

Oh my ... I don't ever recall a time when the tears have spilled out of my eyes with a force or intensity that almost mirrors the downpour of the Falls adjacent to us. I am still feeling my way through all richness of metaphor and symbolism so beautifully executed in this film💖💔💝

And so ... in the final analysis, the day was not how we would have planned... but it touched us in ways we never could have imagined. 🙏

So much so .... that we forgot to eat our supper. We shall do that now, while we enjoy the illumination of the Falls at night! Simply mezmerizing. 🤩🤩🤩

BTW: No zip-linig today either ... due to weather! 🌬🌧🌫 Our last shot at it will be tomorrow morning before we check out. Please keep your fingers crossed for us! 😉

  • Double Sixes in the Niagara Mist!!

    16 Ekim 2019, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

The thunder was rolling at about 4:30am and we awoke to the swishing sound of rain spraying out from under the car tires this morning! 💦💦💦

It's the old boy's 66th Birthday today! It's a gift for both of us to be celebrating in this location! 🎉🎁

I talked the old boy into having a White Linen breakfast at the fancy schmansy Prince of Wales Hotel. We arrived at 11:08am which was a bit past their 11:00am cutoff for breakfast. We would have arrived earlier were it not for us breaking all the rules and enjoying a glass of French Rosé in front of the fire at 9:58am ... and ... making long conversation with the couple who offered to rake our picture outside the restaurant. Fortunately, in honor of John's birthday, they made an exception and offered us a seat!  The birthday boy opted for the Exotic Mushroom and Goat Cheese Omelet. My head was turned towards the Carmelized Onion Tart ... but then ... I opted to go with a traditional breakfast instead! We sipped on our cappuccinos with  a littleTchaikovsky playing in the background! And then ... our server (Kafir) brought us some complimentary drinks ... orange juice and cranberry juice!! He delighted in telling us mixed them himself ... and .. they were, in fact, delicious!

You know it's an uppity restaurant when the dry toast comes wrapped with white linens and is accompanied by balls of butter! 😉

After our late breakfast, we hit the road to go back to the Falls and, along the way, I was reminded that I forgot to tell you about the newlyweds we met yesterday at one of the lookout points along the Niagara Parkway. Sam and Misty were just two days married and we took pictures for each other! Misty enthusiastically proclaimed that we had to pose for the "Vegas Shot"! None of us knew what on earth she meant ... but ... after she demonstrated, we offered up our own best showgirl poses! 😉

We stopped to enjoy the Whirlpool Aero Car! It's an open sided gondola that takes you across the whirlpool in the gorge!!  The views were simply stunning!!

And then, we thought we'd get parked at the hotel even though we were far too early for check-in.  Turns out that we were able to get into our room two hours ahead of schedule!  And ... my gosh ... the view is exquisite! We are on the 20th floor of the 'Sheraton on the Falls' on a corner room facing the majesty of it all. Simply stunning!!

We sipped a glass of wine while we enjoyed the view as the rain fell and when it let up a bit, we headed out onto the Hornblower and ventured right into the Falls!  It was quite the experience!!

And then, to finish off the day, we enjoyed a very lovely dinner in the Italian restaurant at the hotel... overlooking the Falls.

I think the old boy really enjoyed his double sixes birthday!! And with all that joy ... we bid you a very good night and will talk to you again tomorrow! 😊

  • Zippity Doo Dah ... Almost!

    15 Ekim 2019, Kanada ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We wanted to take advantage of what might be our last day of lovely weather today so we were up and out and wandering about quite early ... well ... at least compared to yesterday!

In our wanderings, we took some great pics if the gorgeous floral displays and Fall decorating around this pristine and well manicured town@. We also discoverd some fresh baked buns upon which we could enjoy the juicy, ripe tomotoes we had purchased at the fruit stand yesterday!!  A little mayo and some salt and pepper sachets (snagged from our breakfast) alongside some fruit ... and voila ... we had a delicious lunch in the sunshine on our deck! 😎

We had planned to spend the day in Niagara-on-the-Lake today before we were due to depart for Niagara Falls tomorrow, but with the threat of heavy rains coming for the next couple of days, we decided to take the stunning and picturesque drive down the Niagara Parkway and get a head start enjoying the Falls in the sunshine for a bit.  The drive itself was spectacular ... even though the leaves are a little bit behind the curve in terms of changing color. I guess it has been unseasonably warm here thus far!!

We took the White Water Walk along the Boardwalk and were mezmerized by the power and ferocity of the water!  Apparently, the water is moving at almost 50kms/hour!! It was definitely humbling to see and hear it's thundering presence. We included a little video ... hoping to give you a sense of our experience. 🌊🌊🌊

After that , we caught our first sight of the Falls ... and the rainbows 🌈 ... and ... were stunned by the beauty! We noticed a zip line ... and ... much to the chagrin of my anxious mind ... we bought tickets and ascended to the top level to await our turn to go. 😯 I was shaking in my boots ... but ... determined to take a run. It was not very busy ... only about 400 people rode the lines today ... but ... they told us that on an average day in the peak season, they run 1300 people through!!

As we were saddled up with our gear, we were notified that there was a wind delay. 🌬 We waited patiently ... alongside a number of other adventure seekers ... only to have the delay last and last and last.  After almost an hour of waiting, we opted to get our money back and we will see if we can go again tomorrow or Thursday instead. That is ... as long as I can maintain my courage!!

My new sunglasses served me well as we logged quite a few miles along the edge of the Falls today. All in all, it was pure delight to spend the day outdoors awed by the magnificence of Mother Nature.

We capped the evening off with a super scrumptious and sweet but spicyThai meal!! And, we also enjoyed some great conversation with the couple at the table beside us.  This is what happens when you are married to an extrovert who makes conversation with everyone!! 😉

We are not sure what tomorrow will bring ... I guess we will let the weather determine our options, but I have no doubt that it will be fun!

John is dozing off beside me right now ... and ... I am eager to join him so I'll say good bye for now!  Talk to you all again tomorrow ... 😴😴😴

  • Leisure at the Lake

    14 Ekim 2019, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Oh my gosh ... we were worried about whether we'd be able to sleep because of the time change. We were in bed by 9:30pm EDT and never roused until almost 8:30am!! We lazed in bed with our coffee and barely got out of the hotel before 11:00am!! It was so lovely to have such a leaisurely start to the day!

We stopped at an inviting fruit stand on the road and John couldn't wait until we got into the room to start the tasting. I caught him gobbling up the grapes and strawberries when we parked at our next accomodation!!

We had such fun wandering around the flower laden streets ... meandering and pausing to look at whatever caught our eyes! We opted to take a couple of wine flights so we could taste test 9 of the local wines!! So fun to add a nice charcuterie board to cleanse our palates!

Whenever we travel, we always look forward to popping open the door of our rooms to see if they meet our expectations! We were not the least bit disappointed with Luisa's Retreat here in Niagara on the Lake! It is the most fabulous location. We won't need to move our vehicle until it's time to check out!

We wandered the day away and look forward to doing the same tomorrow! The forecast is calling for 16° and sunshine! Fingers crossed ... 🤞🤞

  • Up, Up and Away

    13 Ekim 2019, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We started this journey with a very early morning flight to Calgary! From our first moments of being up, up and away, we were collecting memories ... and ... snacks!

We enjoyed two for two on-time departures, two smooth flights, one party on Board launched off with a large Tim Horton's coffee and an apple fritter ... complete with a 6" tuna Subway sandwich, nicely chilled French Colombard-Chardonnay, pretzels AND cookies, a bottle of H2O and enjoying a few chapters of Grandma Gatewood's Walk on Audible. John even snuck a power nap into the itinerary! And, all of this was topped off with sunshine and 16°C upon arrival in Hamilton!

We are going Rogue this trip ... Nissan Rogue that is! We picked up our rental and are already smitten with it! We found our way to our hotel easily and effortlessly! When we arrived, however, we were informed that the restaurant was closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday. It was a blessing in disquise because we ended up walking in the warm sunshine to "Ye Olde Squire Taphouse & Eatery". We thoroughly savored some authentic Irish Pubhouse Fare ... and then took another walk ... let's call it the 'wine walk' to get a bottle of wine for the room. We snapped a few pics of the Autumn leaves thus far! It seems they are just starting to turn color!

We are looking forward to a good sleep and then we are off to Niagara on the Lake tomorrow! Will talk to you all again then! 😊

  • 50 Questions: Our UK/European Adventures

    5 Ekim 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

It's been such an extraordinary adventure ... with days filled with sight-seeing and exploring and activities we never could have anticipated! And now, where ever our journeys take us ... I like to use a liberal smattering of these questions to help us enrich our experience by sparking the marvelous stories in our recollections!

    WHAT WAS:

    1.YOUR MOST INSPIRING MOMENT?
*Karen – We had arrived in Porto Portugal and it was early in the morning and we were looking for somewhere to have something more substantial than just a pastry for breakfast. A local actually walked us to another café himself. The inate goodness of people is always so inspiring!
*John – We stopped at a tavern for a drink in Utrecht and the proprietor and one customer were the only people in the place. We sat at the bar with them, and chatted about all kinds of things. We enjoyed a couple of drinks with them and then … upon our leaving … the proprietor would not accept any money for our beverages! It was so generous!

    2. YOUR MOST HOURS AWAKE IN A ROW?
*Karen – Our plane ride home. About 21 hours. But ... I had a sleepless night in Porto.
*John – John had a sleepless night in Barcelona. He was too tall and wide for the bed.

    3. YOUR BEST BUY?
*Karen – We got a bottle of white wine in Spain for $1.97ish. And, it was delicious wine!
*John – John decided that his best buy was the 20 years old Port he tried after the 30 year old Port that came with our most favorite dessert of all time … the almond pie with pistachio ice cream.

    4. YOUR MOST OVERPRICED PURCHASE?
*Karen – We had a very poshy restaurant in our hotel in Roses, Spain and we decided to go our for dinner one night. We had the worst paella and the crappiest service and it cost us well over $65 Euros … which is over $100 CAD.
*John – The wine in Scotland, Ireland, England.

    5. YOUR BEST ACCOMODATION?
*Karen – Soho Stables in London, England! A great location with awesome ammentities!
*John – John really liked the Utrecht City Apartments in the Netherlands but, his all time favorite room was the room we had at Hotel Canyelles Platja in Roses, Spain.

    6. YOUR WORST ACCOMODATION?
*Karen & John - Amsterdam. The room was 52 narrow steps up … no chairs, no hand towels, no cup for teeth brushing. This is also where our clothes got locked in washer/dryer for 12 hours!

    7. YOUR FAVORITE ENTERTAINMENT?
*Karen – The street performers in the various cities were incredibly talented! We were mesmerized on more than one occasion by their artistic offerings.
*John – We attended three theatre shows in London … but for John, he really liked the energy and the story and the humor and the music in the one called “Strictly Ballroom.”

    8. YOUR MOST BREATH-TAKING VIEW?
*Karen – Looking over the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland! The jagged edges and huge cliffs are indescribable!
*John – The Eiffel Tower at night. It really was spectacular!

    9. YOUR SCARIEST MOMENT?
*Karen – being a passenger with the wild and crazy drivers on the narrow roads or busy city streets! I was literally terrified on many occasion.
*John – I was surprised by John's answer! For him was being on the bus coming back from our cruise to the Douro Valley and the bus driver was taking the corners on the little roads at quite a speed. He was really scared that with the wind, the bus might actually tip over turning some of the corners. I'm so grateful I was oblivious to all that!!

    10. YOUR BEST TASTE EXPERIENCE?
*Karen – The Seafood Paella we had on the day of our arrival to Roses, Spain STILL makes my mouth water! It had a huge lobster on the top of it … and ...when drizzled with lemon and splattered with coarse salt .... it was sheer ecstasy on a fork! Oh my gosh though … I am forgetting about the croissants in Spain, liberally topped with thick chunks of brie cheese and tart jams! I was surprised, but the croissants we had in Spain were even better than the ones in France.
*John – At first John couldn’t narrow it down to one. So, he was landing on the haggis and black pudding in Glasgow, Scotland; the croquettes in Amsterdam, Holland; the mussels in Roses, Spain and the octopus, turbot and grilled sardines in Porto, Portugal! But then … he remembered … and I concur … our very best meal was the TAPAS we had in Utrecht on the edge of the canal in the Netherlands.

    11. YOUR WORST TASTE EXPERIENCE?
*Karen – I wanted to be brave and try all the cultural specialties, but … I could not stomach the black pudding that I tried somewhere in the UK. I actually had to spit it out. I also did not enjoy the Scotch in Glasgow.
*John – John is having trouble remembering anything that he really didn’t like. The food service in the UK and Europe puts North American cuisine to shame. I do recall that he left something on his plate somewhere …from a buffet somewhere … but … can’t recall where.

    12. YOUR BEST MOMENT, IN GENERAL?
*Karen – It was truly a gift to meet up with our old friends, Bart and Trudy, in Barcelona! Neither of us knew the other was going but we were able to meet for drinks! It was sheer delight to laugh and chat and catch up with them!
*John – John really, really enjoyed the train travel … as did I! We thoroughly enjoyed careening through the country sides on high-speed trains without any of the stresses of flying!

    13. YOUR WORST MOMENT, IN GENERAL?
*Karen – Discovering our flight home from Paris was two hours sooner than we thought! And, actually, it sucked having to fly back to Paris from Porto in order to fly home.
    * John – John really dislikes airports and all the stress they generate when trying to get through the security without stripping naked and sounding all the alarms. He always forgets something in his pockets that sounds the alarm.

    14. SOMETHING THAT EXCEEDED YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
*Karen – The weather completely exceeded all my expectations. I was expecting far more rainy days. In total, of our 45 days of travelling, I think we experienced only about 2 cumulative days of rainy weather.
*John – Barcelona was a very pleasant surprise. John said he expected it to be more like Mexico … but … it was more like an affluent Cuba! It was fabulous. He was also very impressed with Porto and Portugal in general. We both were! It is such an amazing place!

    15. YOUR BIGGEST LAUGH?
*Karen – We had our biggest belly laughs with Bart and Trudy in Barcelona. I also laughed out loud when John showed up at the Porto Airport with two MAXXIMO cappuccinos. They were like soup terrines … handles on both sides … and you needed them!
*John – It wasn’t funny at the time, but it was hilarious after I got my purse freed from the seat belt! It was uncanny how that could even happen!! Totally hilarious once it was over and done!

    16. YOUR WORST SLEEP?
*Karen – I came down with a head cold and it hit me the hardest in London one night. A close second was in Porto for me. It was so incredibly hot in our room … but … if we opened the patio doors then the mosquitos came in and bit me into itchy misery.
*John – We had a really small bed in Amsterdam. John thinks that was his worst sleep.

    17. SOMETHING YOU WOULD DO AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT?
*Karen – Travel by train throughout Europe. And ... use the Find Penguins App ... its going to build a book for us from all the pictures!
*John – John would like to go back to Portugal.

    18. SOMETHING THAT WAS OVER-RATED?
*Karen – I can’t really say it was over-rated … but … I did get to the point where I lost interest in seeing any more churches or castles. After a while, they lost their sense of majesty for me. Too much of a good thing ... ??
*John – The cost of the food in France! It was entirely ridiculous!

    19. YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF DAY?
*Karen – I’d have to say that happy hour was my favorite time of day! I looked forward to slowing the pace and sipping a glass of wine … wherever we happened to be! It was always a delight for my spirit to chat about our day and reflect on our experiences.
*John – It was the same for John. Resting a bit after a day of walking or sightseeing and sitting back and sipping on the local drink. For example, Scotch in Scotland, Guinness in Ireland, Ales in England, Heineken in Amsterdam, red wine in France, Estella and Moritz in Spain, and Port in Portugal ….AND…limoncello wherever we could find it!

    20. THE NICEST PERSON YOU MET?
*Karen – We met so very many incredible souls along our journey! The proprietor and his lone customer in a pub in Utrecht stick out in my mind as incredibly nice people. All the people who generously offered to help us find our way. All the smiles and shared looks of awe as we were collectively enjoying the sights!
*John – The host of our AirBnB in Porto was incredibly hospitable and extended himself in so many ways. He sticks out in John’s mind as one of the nicest folks who we crossed paths with.

    21. THE NASTIEST PERSON YOU ENCOUNTERED?
*Karen – We went to buy train tickets in Utrecht, and the ticket vendor at the train station was incredibly condescending and was clearly mocking me for not wanting to take an 8:30am train. She was insinuating I was lazy. I reminded her, nicely, that I was, in fact, on vacation and wanted to create a schedule that I would enjoy rather than have to endure. Let's just say her service was less than welcoming.
*John – There was a cyclist who yelled at John in utter disgust … “Get off the road!” in Utrecht. But … in John’s defence, it’s really hard to tell the difference between the bicycle path and the pedestrian path. However, he wants to give the little French ladies a nod for being very pushy and rude. One of them dashed under his raised arm to get in front of us!

    22. YOUR LAZIEST MOMENT?
*Karen – Resting and relaxing in Roses was lazy … in the most welcoming of ways.
*John – When we were in Utrecht … there were a few nights when we were going to bed by 8pm and sleeping in past 8am. But, Roses wins for John too. It was just the perfect place to kick back and be lazy.

    23. YOUR BIGGEST REGRET FOR DOING?
*Karen – My biggest regret was booking our return flight home from Paris instead of Lisbon. It added an extra full day of travel in the wrong direction for us.
*John – John says one of his biggest regrets is spending so much money on food in France. We didn’t really get our money’s worth out of many of our meals.

    24. YOUR BIGGEST REGRET FOR NOT DOING?
*Karen – I am wishing we had given ourselves 10 days in Portugal. I would have liked to have seen Lisbon too. BUT … I would not have traded any of the places we DID go. I guess I wish we had more time.
*John – John had researched so many things for us to do and see in Spain, including a little yellow train ride through the Pyrenees. We ended up staying extra days in Roses and missed out on these explorations. He also regrets that he didn’t get to see a soccer game in Spain or Portugal.

    25. YOUR BEST CHOICE?
*Karen – We made some really good choices for our accomodations! We had great locations, great hosts and great beds! Oh ... and ... it was really a good idea that we filled our go-cup with chilled white wine so we could refresh ourselves ... unobtrusively on those hot travel days ... wherever we happened to be!
*John – John was really glad we decided to spend time in Porto, Portugal rather than going to San Sebastian in Spain or seeing the South of France.

    26. YOUR WORST CHOICE?
*Karen – I wish I had made more of an effort to get some eggs in Porto so we could have made breakfast in our AirBnB.
*John – Coming out of the wrong exit from the subway when it was dark ... we ended up getting so disoriented and then lost! And ... we were only 400 meters from our place!

    27. YOUR GREATEST HARDSHIP?
*Karen – For me, it was an ongoing challenge to keep our tickets and rooms and time frames and travels and sightseeing e-tickets all accessible and in order. As well as ensuring that the phone was charged and the portable charger was charged. Just keeping us organized was the hardest for me.
*John – For John, it was very difficult to see all the homeless people who are living on the streets without any of the luxuries we get to take for granted.

    28. YOUR FAVORITE PLACE?
*Karen – It started out as Ireland for me … but we also had exceptionally good weather. If it had been rainy and dreary, we might not have been so smitten with it. But, nonetheless, now I’d have to say Spain. I think Portugal might trump Spain if I got to see more of it!
    *John – Ditto for John.

    29. YOUR MOST RELAXING MOMENT?
*Karen – We really enjoyed going through the country side on the trains, but my most relaxing moment was on the beach in Roses. No where to go, nothing to organize or remember … just sitting and enjoying the sun and the sea.
*John – John really, really enjoyed sitting in the front seat on the tour bus in Scotland – we had a great female bus driver. He also really relaxed on our cruise through the Douro Valley.

    30. YOUR MOST STRESSFUL MOMENTS?
*Karen – At first it was being on a gigantic coach on the narrow roads in both Scotland and Ireland … but … my most stressful memory is realizing that our flight home to Calgary from Paris was two hours earlier than I had in my mind! Panic struck our hearts and minds!
*John – Always in the airports! All airports. You’d think when you travel a lot that you would become more savvy … but … each airport is different! And what works in one doesn’t work in another. And … their expectations are always different!

    31. YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT?
*Karen – I was disappointed in Crocs footwear when my sandal broke. I have no idea why that company didn’t put rivets in my sandals like they do for the straps in their other croc styles.
*John – The Mona Lisa is so small and underwhelming. There were many other paintings that were far more stunning than she.

    32. YOUR GRUMPIEST DAY?
*Karen – October 3, 2018 … all the frustrations of flying from Porto to Paris. Although ... a close second was trying to find out way in the fog on our first morning in Porto! Losing ones-self in the moment is far more desirable than getting LOST. And, we were lost. And I was major hungry and major tired ... so that didn't help.
*John – October 4, 2018 … upon learning that our flight home from Paris to Calgary was two hours earlier than we had thought!

    33. YOUR BEST WEATHER?
*Karen & John – Oh my gosh! We had the most exceptional weather four our entire trip! I expected it to be wet and cloudy alot ... but ... that kind of weather was the exception!! The best weather, however, that sticks out in my mind was on our first day in Roses. We were sitting on the beach all day enjoying the turquoise sea and the bright blue skies and the warm sunshine. And ... it needs to be hot to have a beach day. And it WAS! It was a perfect day for being on the beach by the water.

    34. YOUR WORST WEATHER?
*Karen – Amsterdam – upon arrival. It was pouring rain and we had to walk a fair ways with our back packs to find our accomodations. The other weather issue that comes to mind was how cold it was in the morning on the boat when went for the Douro Valley cruise in Portugal. It was really, really windy that day unfortunately.
*John – It was really windy in Porto! However, it was unseasonably warm as well! It was also really foggy in the mornings …so … it was hard to see and/or get our bearings for directions without being able to see the landmarks for reference.

    35. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WILDLIFE?
*Karen – The sheep on the green grass in Scotland and Ireland were so darn endearing! They added an artistic touch to the landscapes!
*John – John really loved the white horses in Scotland. And … with tongue in cheek … he is remembering the big rat that skittered past us while we were waiting in line to ascend the Eiffel tower. And … he also fondly recalls the umpteen hundred million pigeons that were in every square in every city! Did you know that John raised pigeons when he was a young boy??

    36. THE BEST SUNSET?
*Karen & John – From where I was looking, the best sunset we saw was on our walk home in Porto. It was stunningly gorgeous in its offerings of yellows and oranges and reds! And it kept changing!

    37. THE BEST SUNRISE?
*Karen – Hmmm. I don’t recall being up for the sunrises! Or, if we were, we weren't geographically positioned to enjoy them.
*John – He can’t recall one either.

    38. THE MOST TEAR WORTHY MOMENT?
*Karen – We were in Barcelona, and enjoying our lunch on a patio and the street performers would come and entertain us. One of them looked like a homeless woman, who belted out a song with such emotion that I was literally crying. She was holding a clear plastic cup for donations as she walked amongst us gifting us with her voice.
*John – That was the one for John too! We also both enjoyed the violinist that played in Edinburgh outside a restaurant. She also inspired some tears to trickle down both our faces.

    39. THE MOST HEART - STRETCHING MOMENT?
*Karen & John – There was a man in France, with no legs and was missing an arm … but he was playing a flute in hopes of getting some coins. We were both so touched that we donated a bill.

    40. THE PLACE YOU HATED MOST TO LEAVE?
*Karen & John – We hated to leave Ireland … but … it was even harder to leave Spain and Portugal. There were so many more sights we wanted to see and things we wanted to do.

    41. THE PLACE THAT IS WORTH ANOTHER TRIP?
*Karen & John – Ireland, Spain and Portugal are still on our radar!

    42. YOUR BIGGEST AGGRAVATION?
*Karen – I got really frustrated when using google maps while walking in France between the buildings on the narrow streets. You don’t walk fast enough to get confirmation that you are headed in the right direction and the arrow points up rather than left or right. Like I shared before, I also got really frustrated trying to get our bearings in the fog in Porto.
*John – John’s biggest aggravation was leaving the UK with a whole pocket full of British Pounds that we could not exchange anywhere. So … we were stuck with all these coins. So … if you are headed to the UK … please come and get our pounds!

    43. YOUR BIGGEST "DUH" MOMENT?
*Karen – I will go down in history for saying ‘no’ while we were in Amsterdam when I was questioned about whether I knew how a pump worked.
*John – We came back from getting breakfast … my hands were full … the whole way … and John wanted to know if Uber had confirmed our ride. I looked at him, quizzically … wondering how he thought I had any chance to check my phone yet!

    44. YOUR BIGGEST "AHA" MOMENT?
*Karen – Many of our common phrases are rooted in old historical times. These were aha moments for me! For example … “getting away scot free” is rooted in the Scottish legal system where there are three verdicts: guilty, not guilty and we know you are guilty but can’t prove it. There were so many of these over our journey!! Or, when we talk about something being “earmarked” … this refers back to times when people did ‘wrong’ they nailed their ears to a piece of wood.
*John – That we could spend 46 days together …. 24/7 … and we are still smiling at one another.

    45. YOUR GREATEST LESSON?
*Karen – Travelling is always a lesson in humility for me. I am always reminded of the decency of people … and the hardships they have faced … and the resilience that brings people through things they think they could never endure.
*John – No matter how hard things get … it could always be a lot worse. John has a deeper appreciation for how challenging it was for the Scots and the Irish to defend their people and their homes and their lands. The wars had to have been brutal.

    46. YOUR BRAVEST MOMENT?
*Karen – I guess I was brave in terms of trying all the different foods that we encountered along the way. Other than that … I don’t know if I was brave.
*John – Riding captive in vehicles (buses, taxis etc) driven by the locals! As John said, numerous times, “they all drive like they stole the cars”

    47. YOUR BEST SURPRISE?
*Karen & John – Hands down: it was learning that Bart and Trudy were just down the street from us in Barcelona ... and ... that it worked for us to get together for a visit, We haven't seen them for five years! Oh ... but I can also say I was stunned to realize that I really liked the Moritz beer in Spain! THAT was a real shocker!

    48. THE MOMENT/EXPERIENCE THAT WILL STAY IN YOUR HEART FOREVER?
*Karen – There were so many beautiful moments that dotted our time abroad. I don’t think I can reduce it to one. They all had some deep meaningful resonance but in different ways.
*John – Walking the trail along the edge of the sea from our beachside resort to the town of Roses is etched in John’s soul. Also … he was so deeply moved by the opportunity to reconnect with his family in the Netherlands.

    49. A MOMENT/EXPERIENCE YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE SHARED?
*Karen – My Bestie and I like nothing more than a good walk and a talk. I think she would have cherished walking along the edge of the mountain in Howth, Ireland … as well as wandering along the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland! It would have been even more enjoyable (if that is possible?) if she had been able to be there too!
*John – John was so wishing that Hutch could have joined in the fun he had in the huge market in Barcelona!

    50. SOMETHING THAT REALLY NOURISHED YOUR INTERNAL FLAME?
*Karen – All the walking we were able to do really nourished my soul. The weather was so good for us to be outdoors so much and we took advantage of it.
*John – John realized that his knees are not as bad as he supposed. He was able to walk and walk and walk and walk and walk. He did not expect he would be able to do it without too much pain.

And so ... our 2018 UK/European Adventures have come to an end. And ... the gifts of these travels have shifted us and stretched us in the most remarkable ways. It is not so much what you see and do while you are travelling ... but who we are becoming as we let all the moments reshape our perceptions of life and living.

And, the exceptional gifts of this journey are not lost on either one of us. We are deeply shifted by all the GRATITUDES, GAHS, GRINS, GROANS, GRRRS, GASPS, GIFTS and GOODNESS that we collected in our hearts with each of our days.

  • GAHS, GROANS and GOOFS!

    4 Ekim 2018, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

GRATITUDES: After a very nice dinner at the French restaurant next to our hotel, I had a pretty darn good sleep in that technosavvy hotel. We did not have an early morning departure (I thought we flew out around 1:30pm-ish), so it was nice to not have to set an alarm. For some reason though, I woke up really early anyway. And, rather than rolling over, I decided to stay awake because I thought it might make it easier to doze a little on the plane. So, I languished away almost an hour and a half piddling away on email and Facebook and Find Penguins before John woke up ... shortly before 7:00am. We figured we had oodles of time and were leisurely chatting about what time we should get the shuttle. And so ... I opened my WestJet App to confirm the exact time so we could configure our scheduling for re-packing (getting the cold weather wear out and the shorts and sandals tucked away), eating breakfast and shuttling to the airport.

GOOFS: You cannot even begin to imagine the jolt of adrenalin that coursed through my veins when I looked at the the departure time and it said ... 11:20am!!!! WHATTTTT!! I think I even dropped the f-bomb. John's eyes were as big as saucers and we both scrambled out of bed as I tried to calculate our time frame backwards! But when you are in a state of extreme alarm, your pre-frontal cortex doesn't work. I was thinking ... with my heart thumping out of my chest ... we have to be at the airport by 9:20am. We have to have about 45 minutes for the shuttle. That was hard math in that moment. Okay. We have to be at the shuttle by 8:30am. Oh my gosh ... we have to be to breakfast by 7:45am. Gah!! Therefore, we have to get showered and dressed and re-packed within the next 30 minutes!!!! YIKES!!! It didn't seem possible!

GROANS: I couldn't even remember where my toothbrush was at that moment! John decided to jump in the shower. OH yeah!! Our colorful shower. I didn't think I even had time to take a shower ... but ... it was the colorful shower!! And so ... I determined to get in and get wet with a burst of some color ...at least!

GRINS: And so ... John manned the IPAD controls. FUSCHIA first. It was okay. PERIWINKLE BLUE next. Ah yes. He liked the blue on me! Perhaps it was because we were both seeing red ... and since our favorite color is purple ... it made a pleasing combo! It made no difference to me at that point. I was too rushed to consider trying on the other colors. So, I guess we will never really know what color is the most flattering on a wet 60 year old. And, that is my sad and quick end to what might have been a truly 'colorful' story. Sorry gang.

GAHS: Most surprisingly, we were so darn quick that we were at breakfast by 7:30am. And ... we were ahead of schedule for the shuttle too. And so ... I don't even want to be reminded that I probably had time to try on the other colors! I was too busy kicking myself for fouling things up! I was just grateful that we caught my error in time to get on the plane at all!

GRIMACES: And then ... it turned out that we were delayed by about 45 minutes anyway. Such are the unexpected unpredictabilities of travelling. And ... we learned that we have to disembark in Halifax ...get our luggage and go through customs there. Then, we have to put our luggage on the transfer belt ... and get back on the same plane ... same seats. But, of course, we had to go through security all over again. Arghhhh. And our departure time was 3:00pm. And, we were still standing in the line at the security counters at 2:40pm. So ... we had a little stress about missing our connection with the same aircraft we arrived on. And ... the water we bought when we got through security in Paris ended up in the trash in Halifax.

GRATITUDES: On a more positive note, just before we landed, when we broke through the clouds over Nova Scotia, we were gifted with the most beautiful display of Autumn leaves! I took a pic out the window of the plane! This was our first taste of Autumn colors! And, I have been craving a Subway sandwich for a while now ... and ... was able to snag one at the airport. I'm also looking forward to having a Tim Hortons in the morning! Oh ... and most interestingly ... back at the airport in Paris they had something I had never seen before. They have a container called a charge box. You can rent a little locker space equipped with various types of chargers ... pay your money ... and then lock it up. Brilliant for those who don't have adapters.

GOODNESS: We were scheduled to be flying for some 13 hours today so I decided to order the Internet that WestJet provides because I thought it would help me pass the time. And it did!! I was able to work on our "50 Travel Questions" about our journey! So, I typed away as we chatted and reflected on the questions. It always fun to revisit things because the conversation sparks memories that had fallen off your radar. I was really hoping to get it done before we get home and get back to work and forget too much!! I'll blog them here when I get them completed.

GAHS: Our flights were both delayed ... so there are folks who missed their connections tonight. Fortunately, for us, we got the shuttle to our hotel and are so glad we don't have to drive back tonight. So, we are staying in Calgary ... having a gourmet dinner of squished ham sandwiches that have been in our bag since Paris (17 hours ago), some Pringles (becoming a staple for us!) and some wine we grabbed at the airport. And then, we'll be taking the Red Arrow back home tomorrow!

It actually feels really good to be back in Canada. Looking forward to reconnecting soon!! But for now, good night from us ... k&j

GROANS: For some reason ... our pictures won't upload. I'll try again tomorrow! As my mothermother-in-law used to say: "Its always something!"

  • The Trials and Tribulations of Travel!

    3 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

GAHS: And the stresses of travelling and the long journey back to reality intensified early this morning!  😬

The Uber driver who brought us to our room after our Douro River Excursion yesterday suggested we best leave for the airport by 9:30am (even though our flight was not until 1:30pm).  He contended that we needed to allow time for traffic jams and accidents and other delays that tend to tie up traffic here. Like he said "You never know ... and you don't want to miss your plane." Given that our 10 minute ride to the boat launch took us 30 minutes yesterday, we took our driver's suggestion seriously and I ordered an Uber to arrive between 9:20 - 9:35am. My anxious mind really likes it when I am on top of things like that ... 😉

GROANS: Since we had arrived back to our room very late last night from our River Cruise, we had not eaten anything except for the very nice lunch they had fed us at NOON! So, by 9:00am this morning we had eaten nothing at all since then ... other than the bag of chips on the boat and a half eaten tube of Pringles Potato Chips that we had left over in the room! This wouldn't normally present a problem but our Airbnb is in a residential area and food service is very scarce. In fact, this might be the third or forth time we had Pringles for supper in Spain/Portugal. 🙃

GULPS: It occurred to my anxious mind that if we didn't get something to eat before we got into the Uber this morning that it could be 24 hours before we eat anything substantial!! 😟

GOSH: The only place we could think of was a little cafe in the shopping mall about 10 minutes walk away. We worried, however, that it might not be open early enough for us to get packed up and get there and get back before 9:15am.  But ... it was our only choice!!

GRATITUDES: Fortunately... it was open!  We got got two large coffees ... which were the size of thimbles ... and three sandwiches "to take away".  We hurried back to our place to eat quickly (on our little deck one last time!) and then hustled down to wait for our Uber. We positioned ourselves in full view in front of our building so he would easily see us upon arrival.

GROANS: It showed that " Renaud" was one minute away ... so all seemed well.  But then ... it looked like he wasn't moving anymore.  Was he stuck in traffic??  We weren't sure ... but then ... Uber was telling us to meet the driver.  We were standing in clear view ... with all our bags ... but couldn't see him.  what the heck?? Finally John looked way down the street and noticed a car with his emergency flashers on.  We grabbed all our stuff as quickly as possible to run down to where he was waiting. And I could see from his license plate that it was our Uber!

GROWLS: Just as we got to the car... he started pulling away.  And then ... I was notified by Uber that our ride had been cancelled!!! What??? We were right beside the car!

GAHS: It was only about 9:25am ... but Renaud thought he'd been stood up and was already leaving.  He asked me to just call him back.  I don't know Uber well enough to do THAT ... so I just requested the ride again. 🙄

GOOD GOLLY: But Renaud was too slow to respond and that is how we ended up with Jorge as our driver instead. I apologized to Renaud for the mix up ... but it was probably a blessing in disguise because Jorge spoke English very well ... and ... drove at sensible and sane speeds.

GEEZE:  So guess what? No real congested traffic this morning. We arrived at the airport by 10:00am ... for our 1:30pm flight!!  😒

GRRRRRR: I had not checked in online because we had bags to check and I didn't have access to a printer ... and ... I didn't know if the Transavia airline offered e-tickets or not. I thought it would be easier up to just do it all at once ... but no.  No one was at our ticket counter. There was a sign directing people to check in online.  So there I stood ... right in front of the ticket counter, using up my data ... checking-in on my phone. It did, however, offer to give me an e-ticket to download and save on my phone.  So ... I did that.

GARGANTUAN GRRRRRRS: BUT ... do you think I could find where my phone put the tickets!!  Without downloading the Transavia Airlines App (which I doubted I'd ever need again!) the link in my downloads wouldn't work.  So I saved the boarding passes to memos ... hoping their scanners could read the condensed version of the barcode. Or, better yet, that they would print out boarding passes when we dropped our bags.

GRUMPIES: And well ... with that ... we found our way down to the arrivals level to the only place to sit and have a coffee on this side of security.  I was cranky pants extraordinaire... so ... the old boy went off in search of a bigger coffee.

GIFTS:: He came back with two soup sized terrines filled with cappuccino. I broke out laughing ... and ... he argued we did several hours to kill. Which was true ........................🙄

GRIMACES:  And the saddest part of it all is that the flight we were catching wasn't taking us home.  It was taking us back to Paris so we could catch another flight home tomorrow from there.  We had presumed it best to choose our outbound flight home from a central destination because we didn't know for sure where we would be when it was time to come home.  We were regretting that we had not chosen Lisbon  ... but ... I guess it's the price we must pay for the flexibility we wanted.

GRIMACES: We took the 2 hour flight with Transavia from Porto to Paris ... and then ... spent almost 1.5 hours with Uber just getting across the City of Love and Lights (during rush hour) from the Orly airport to our hotel ... which is cleverly situated right next to the airport we fly out of tomorrow. And so ... another $69.45€ .. and no food or snacks or drinks provided! We were sure wishing our go-cup had been full! 😉

GASPS: And then ... we arrived in a hotel like we have never ever before seen!!  It comes with an IPAD that controls everything from the blinds ... to projector that screens the TV onto the wall ... to the colors of the lights over the clear round shower that is prominently positioned in the middle of the room.  I have been seriously pondering what color lighting will be the most flattering for a wet 60 year old?? Fuschia? Lime? Periwinkle? Citron? The possibilities are endless!!😂

GRINS: The old boy is having such fun playing with all the electronic controls!! It's fun for me to watch him delight in all his discoveries!

GRATITUDES: We are here ... sipping Duty Free wine in our techno-room ... and heading out for dinner before 9:00pm. We are in the air with Westjet for over 13 hours tomorrow ... but for tonight ... we are content.

    Sending love .... k&j

  • The Douro Valley ...

    2 Ekim 2018, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

GRATITUDES: For our last day in Portugal we had booked an all day river cruise up the Douro Valley. The excursion included breakfast and lunch on the boat and then Port Wine Tasting at one of the many vineyards lining the Douro Valley. It was a long day though ... we had to be at the boat by 8:30am and didn't return until 9:15pm! 😴

GAFFAHS: Due to traffic, we were running behind ... and then ... as I was hurrying to get out of the taxi ... one of the metal rings on my theft-proof purse got attached to my seat belt somehow!! Seriously!! I am not making this up! And so... I couldn't get out of the cab until I freed my purse because my purse was slung over my body ... so there I was ... late for the boat and stuck in the cab!! 😟

GAH!! How do oddball things like this happen?? After wrestling with it ... I finally freed myself ... but ... I really didn't need the extra panic!!! 🤯

GRATEFULS AND GROANS: We got to the boat and got on in time ... but ...my fear about breakfast was realized. A real European breakfast. Buns and jam. No protein. 😥

GRATEFULS: Fortunately I had some protein bars in our bag ... thanks to my daughter! And we ended up with some lovely table mates who were also Canadian and had done part of the Camino trail last week! We enjoyed our conversation with them very much!

GROANS: It was darn cold on that boat. We had certainly expected it to be a bit chilly in the morning .... but the howling wind was adding a very unfavorable element to the cruising. 🌬🌬🌬

GRATITUDES: One of our new table mate friends offered me an extra jacket to cover my bare legs ... which was deeply appreciated!

GRINS: The sights were stunning along the river ... with the endless vineyards lining both sides of the valley with layered terraces of grape vines and oodles of olive trees! And the lunch made up for the breakfast ... it was excellent! And it warmed up eventually too!! ☀️

We also went through three locks which the old boy found very interesting. One of them took us up 85 feet!! Amazing if you think about how mankind has found ingenious ways to manipulate mother nature!

And then on our way home ... we stopped at one of the vineyards for some Port tasting! I declined but John tried the Rosé Port. He thought it was good ... not as strong as the tawny.

FUN FACTS: We learned that they are not permitted to irrigate by their governance board. They believe if they do, then the plants get lazy ... they want the roots to search deeply for the moisture. They will go down 20 feet to find a drink! They often plant sage between the vines as a way of determining whether they need to spray for bugs. If they can see them on the sage ... they spray the vines.

Oh ... they plant the vines vertically as long as the slope is not more than 45°. If it is steeper than that ... they build terraces ... which are all picked by hand ... AND ... the grapes are still stomped by feet. They still stomp with feet because feet won't break the seeds in the grapes. Oh ... and the terraces are made of shale to keep the moisture in and the heat more constant. It was so fascinating!

The grapes are teeny tiny ... like pearls! About the size of blueberries. And the grape vines that produce the Vintage Port are 100 years old. Vintage Port will keep for eternity ... it just keeps getting better with age. Other varieties need to be consumed within 10 years for optimal taste and color.🍇🍇🍇

It was a long day ... but a good day. And now ... we are hoping for a good sleep. We are travelling for the next three days. Porto to Paris tomorrow. Paris to Calgary the next day. And taking the Red Arrow home the day after that!

Looking forward to seeing you soon ... k&j

P.S. I keep forgetting to share some pics with you of the authentic lifestyle of the locals in this neighborhood. They do their laundry in a large open pit ... and ... cook on the wood coals on the streetside!

  • A Glitch of a Day in Porto!

    1 Ekim 2018, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

GRATITUDES: And so ... the fog rolled in early last night and cooled things down considerably!! We washed underwear by hand and draped them all over our balcony to dry ... opened the patio doors ... and, very thankfully, had a fabulous sleep!!

We awoke nicely rested with renewed energy and were ready to hit the marble and stone roads! Have I mentioned how hard they are to walk on?? Thank goodness I got those new walking sandals in Roses! My expensive but cheap Barcelona flip flops would not have cut the mustard on these historic roads and little lanes!

GLITCH #1: Foggy undies. Our freshly washed underwear was not even a wee bit dry. 😯 First lesson learned for this prairie girl. Things don't dry in the fog.

GOODNESS: We wandered down one of the narrow stone paths to our favorite little breakfast place ... Café Christina. It was opened 214 years ago ... in 1804!! Its such a busy little place. John captured some video to give you a felt sense of why we enjoy it so much!

GIFTS: We took the river taxi to where we could hop back on the bus and then hopped off so we could walk over one of the six bridges here in Porto. And then ... we took the Funicular up the riverbank hillside so we could, once again, wander through the old historic parts of the city.

GASPS OF GREATNESS: We scaled the tower of the Church of the Clerics (aka:Torres does Clérigos) which was designed by Nicolau Nasoni (1691 - 1773). If I understand correctly, the Church and it's Tower were started in 1725 ... and not completed until 1795.

GRANDEUR: It was 111 steps up from the 4th floor and then another 33 up to the very top. John even scraped up his elbows because it got so dang narrow the higher we went!  But ... it was worth t! The views were absolutely stunning. And ... they also had brass plaques all around the turret with interesting information. For example, comparisons of heights of tall structures around the world. It was a fascinating experience!!

GLITCH#2: Afterwards, we stopped for lunch in the touristy area ... where the placemat had a sudoku puzzle on it. This got me wondering if we were in for a long wait?? But no. The food arrived quickly ... but ... it was the most disappointing cuisine we have had in Porto!! I couldn't drink my red wine and my lasagna was soggy. 😥 And so, I tried some of John's fries ... but they tasted fishy (must have been fried in old oil) and his appy tasted off to me. So ... I left ... still hungry ... in search of a second shot at lunch!

GLITCH #3: And then ... we arrived at Pimms (I had seen it from the bus!). And ... I was tickled to see I could get a
"francesinha" ... which I had heard was a MUST HAVE in Porto.

And before I knew it ... I was being ushered to a table ... in the back ... by the most authentic and quite aged but very determined little Portuguese lady. She seated us and then we watched as she bustled and snagged customers who were looking at the menu on the side of the building ... just as we had. It wasn't until I went to the menu board to get the correct spelling for my sandwich that I realized things were not as they seemed!!

The proprietor of the restaurant approached me and wanted to know my purpose ... and ... what I was writing in my phone. I told him I was checking the spelling on the sandwich we were having in his restaurant. He grabbed my phone suspiciously and typed it in ... reading what I had written ... and informing me that I was not seated in his restaurant.

Yep. The ambitious little lady had stolen his patron and ushered us to her restaurant... right behind his. And, even funnier than that ... she was making me a francesinha... even though that item was on HIS menu but NOT on hers!! 😏

GLITCH #4: It might have been hilarious at the time, but they were doing renovations or restorations or demolitions on the adjacent building. So ... they were jack-hammering tile and tossing it down towards us. My amygdala was on fire with the crashing down of things beside us!

GLITCH #5: My francesinha was way too salty to eat. So much for lunch attempt number two. Argh! The wine, however, was lovely. And I was enjoying it until this fiesty little lady actually pulled the table away from me ... so she could seat two other prospective patrons that she had snagged at the streetside.

GAFFAHS: No. I'm not kidding. The two potential patrons looked at me ... looked again at her ... and backed away ... suggesting I should just enjoy my wine. 😉

GAHS: The little lady would have none of that ... no need to lose a new customer the one who should drink up and leave!. She plopped the hand written bill on the table and nicely shooed me away! It was actually so bizarre it was funny ... and ... the patrons at the other tables were chuckling along with me at the hilarity of it all. John was in the bathroom... so he missed most of these shenanigans! And ... so ... I drank up and we left ... with another unforgetttable experience of this fabulous city!

GIFTS: We ambled up and down a few more lanes (it's very hilly on the banks of the Douro) ... not knowing where we would end up. Fortunately, we found some comfy chairs at a bar right along the riverside ... in the SHADE ... and had another exceptional experience! Green wine!! We had never heard of it ... but ... the server said it was made rom grapes that were not yet ripe ... so it was quite dry and fresh and grassy! Perfect for a hot, hot, hot day on Porto. So ... we ordered one glass ... and then another ... and ... I think we even had a third! If/when you come to Porto, be sure to please your palate with the green wine!!  And ... we languished and lounged on the shores for a good while. It was sublime.

GRATITUDES: We capped off the evening with a dinner at a local restaurant that grills the fresh catches of the day ... outside ... over white hot wood coals. The old boy was ecstatic! He had grilled sardines and dorado ... and ... I enjoyed the sole. The oohing and awing from my hubby went on and on and on and on! It was fun to see him enjoying the experience so fully!

GOODNESS: We understand that Lisbon is also an exceptional choice, but we are just loving the pace of Porto! It has been such a gift to enjoy all the moments thatis special space has to offer without the congestion of a bigger city. For example ... the sunset on the walk back to our AirBnB was exceptional tonight!!! I couldn't get enough pictures of it!

And so ... despite the glitches ... we say "obrigado" Porto. It's been another wonder day annd we end it with grateful hearts!
