    Home to Bakersfield

    April 26, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

Long day! Finished packing house up for the summer, hoping to have renters at some point. 🤞
Almost hated to leave, spring is in full swing and definitely headed to summer. Probably was in the 80s when we left. Daffodils in full bloom, tulips haven't even opened. No dogwood blooms at all, maybe too dry last summer or too cold this winter?
Got off later than we hoped, stopped at velascos and had late lunch. We were starving and ready for some food.
Ran a couple of errands in Fresno and on the road by 5. Got to Orange Grove RV about 7:15. Walked Charlie, enjoyed the smell of orange blossoms, cooked dinner and had to drink my wine without ICE !? HOW could I forget ICE?

  • 450 miles to Williams

    April 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Wow, a LONG day on the road! We didn't wake up until 7:30 those morning, so quick cup of coffee, some powdered donuts, meds, teeth brushed, and we hit the road.
Hwy 58 was thick with traffic, but we always enjoy this drive over Tehachapi. Nice and green, not a lot of wildflowers, maybe too late?
Gas in Tehachapi, plus cinnamon rolls for tomorrow's breakfast!
Out across Mojave, and got on 40 east. Pretty 🥵, but keeping the windows open for some natural AC!
(There is no such thing as RV dash air conditioning no matter what they tell you)
Stopped in Ludlow ( old route 66 stop) to make lunch. Crossed the Colorado, very FULL! and into Arizona.
Arizona Interstate 40 is terrible! Pot holes and poorly completed repairs (?) resulted in a very trying day. I was driving and frankly tried to drive on the white line at the side to find a smoother surface. Then drove in the fast lane because it wasn't as worn out as the slow lane. The faster traffic did not understand our decision....
Had hoped to get to Flagstaff, but finally gave up at Williams and pulled of the road at about 5:30.
Pulled into a Love's, took a deep breath and poured a glass of wine. Nice evening, cool and dark. Too bad the trucks never turn their engines off.
    Tom, Charlie and Frank exhausted.

  • Williams to Sky City casino

    April 28, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Nice drive out of Williams, almost reminds me of 395 around Mammoth. Very little under growth and just lots of pines. But at some point we lose the pines and it becomes low scrubs and then eventually turns into pinyon pines. Stopped and made some lunch at the Petrified Forest National Park. Very windy. Looking at the park map, I don't think we have ever actually finished the park drive, although the last time we were in the area I think we were at the other end of the park drive. Maybe one day we will just actually do the drive. Tom took over driving and we arrived at the Sky City Casino and paid for full hook ups, plus an option to wash my hair in a real shower!Read more

  • All the way thru New Mexico

    April 29, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Pretty cool over the evening. We accidentally left a couple off windows open (behind the shades) and it was 51 ° in the RV. Hard to get it of bed when it's that cool.
Emptied our waste and filled up with water anticipating more parking lot overnighters. Back on 40 east.
Quick stop in Santa Rosa at the Route 66 car museum to make lunch. It didn't look that good so just took some pics of the older cars outside. NM has a pretty consistent look, gentle rolling hills, dry grass and lots, and lots, and lots of pinyon pines. Did not take a single picture of one. Fact: it is the state tree of NM.
Tom did the afternoon drive, crossed over in to Texas which looks totally unlike NM. Not a tree to be seen, and of course (as those who have spent a lot of time in Texas) the wind turbines!
Quick detour to the tiny town of Adrian. It is physically the mid point of route 66 between Los Angeles and Chicago. (I-40 is Route 66, at least most of it)
Then on into Amarillo for an overnight at the ubiquitous "Cracker Barrel" restaurant found near interstates and highways in most states. Dinner was okay, but pretty inexpensive! And a free overnight. (No power or water)
Took a nice walk after dinner with the pup down to the American Quarter Horse museum. Looked nice, but clearly was closed.

  • Kind of like Oklahoma

    April 30, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Tom started the drive today while I researched housing (well maybe I should say "parking") options for tonight. We thought showers might be nice before arriving on Aunt Chris's footsteps tomorrow, so wanted an RV Park.
Again another beautiful day! Our timing (weather-wise) has been fabulous... No rain, no storms, no blistering heat... And no tornados!
Pulled off 40 at Shamrock, Texas because they have a great little Route 66 site, the Conoco Tower gas station and then U-Drop Inn cafe. Very distinctive and very well maintained. Really glad we made this quick stop.
Then grabbed lunch at a cute little diner, the Farmhouse Cafe. I had to order the classic patty melt, it just felt like an appropriate choice on Route 66.
Switched drivers and headed on into Oklahoma City. We actually enjoyed the drive, roads were a little bit better and the landscape and topography seemed more interesting than Texas. Overnighting at the Roadrunner RV Park, not bad for a park in the middle of an urban area. Still about 4 miles from downtown center. Nice walk with the pup and then reheated leftovers from our Cracker Barrel dinner the night before!

  • Visit with Aunt Chris

    May 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

The next several entries are sort of a multiple day "catch up" entries, so the details will be vague! Monday was our last drive day before arriving at Fayetteville. Just maintained our course, East on 40....quick lunch break somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, Loves Truck stop and they actually had a fenced soutth park Soo Charlie could be off leash!
Pulled into Chris's house about 3:30pm, RV and all. We unloaded some of our overnight items, puppy stuff, and took RV over to Shari's.
Back to Chris's and we all met Shari and Abby at Eastside Grille for great dinner ands conversation. (No pics!)

  • It's spring, let's shop!

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Slow morning for Tom and I, Chris of course is up by 6:30 with here homr health aide, Nissa. I didn't even hear her come in; we were sleeping pretty soundly.
We all really enjoyed a long "devo" phone call with Cindy. Especially long because we got to hear about her trip to visit Adam and Rachel. Sounded great.
So with no pressing plans, we all drove up to Rogers to check out the At Home store. Chris's patio pillows and cushions really needed to be replaced and we figured they would have a big selection. We were not disappointed. The store was huge and we had a LOT of important decisions. We finally left the store at about 2 with at least a dozen different pillows and sizes. We needed a large flat cart to get them out to the car, but with the wind blowing, it looked like a a comedy sketch as we tried to load them.
We had a late, late lunch at a nearby restaurant Chris recommended, Jose's and it was Taco Tuesday! As many tacos as you could eat, plus rice and beans for $10.99. We literally rolled out of there, great food!
Home by 4 or so, Chris took a short break and went to her first PEO meeting in over a year. A friend picked her up and she had a great time seeing old friends.
Meanwhile Tom and I just grazed through her refrig for dinner.

  • More shopping!

    May 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

We had a busy day! I got up earlier this time too make sure little Zoe got to the vet in time for her dental work. Teeth cleaning and possible extractions, (which she did have one).
Dropped Zoe off, devo with Cindy, and then Chris's and I headed back to At Home too make some "adjustments" to let pillow selections. Also picked up a few other (necessary!) "accessories" for her home. Had to grab burgers to good soon that we had time to get back to Fayetteville for 2:15 wound clinic visit. They completely unwrap and photo her amputated leg, observe it for healing and then re-wrap her leg. Doctor and nurse both thought it was looking healthier. Chris's and I were really encouraged.
Back home just inn time too pick up Zoe, then arrived home to meet with friends, Barbara and Jan for visit.
Chris's finally took short nap before a delicious dinner out with Shari and Andy at Mermaids. Excellent. Great calamari, I had a fabulous shrimp and chicken salad and a cocktail that I had never had, a French 75. Very good, like a lemon drop, but not as sweet. We just asked a great time talking and laughing! Home and a scramble to give the pups their treats and get into bed!

  • We had to say goodbye

    May 4, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Well we decided a full two days was way too short. (Our first day of work it's fast approaching...Tuesday!) I still had a little time in the morning before we drove off. And Chris sand I managed to fill it out as well. Or days was so busy yesterday we never got by the pharmacy to fill dinner prescriptions. So after getting a little laundry going and breakfast, we headed out to her pharmacy shop, which is one of those nicer ones that have some cute gift items to peruse while you wait.
We both found some "much needed" items. Actually they were gifts that Chris's needed to get, so then we had to get them wrapped. It is remarkable that we didn't most off the morning at the pharmacy!
It was getting close to lunch so we picked up some good old subway wraps and we all sat down for lunch before Tom and I took off on the road
It was, as ALWAYS, a great visit and excellent weather.
Finally got the road about 1 or so, and the rain began. Not bad though. We got as far as St. Roberts and did stay overnight at Walmart. Quiet, small town, flat parking area

  • Driving Illinois

    May 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

Today was just about getting the miles in. Or typical drive day starts with me driving in the am and Tom in afternoon. I got in about 3 hours and we're crossed into Illinois. Weather great, road conditions varied, but mostly better today.
Lunch at a rest stop, and Charlie"play" time. She used a much improved traveler over last year. Once we get going she finds a spot to her liking and sleeps!
Tool a little longer route that put us southeast of Chicago and stayed overnight at a Cracker Barrel in Bourbonaise. Nice very quiet, we were the only overnighters at this location.

  • Home for the summer

May 6, 2023 in the United States

Again just another long drive day so that we could be in Traverse on Saturday. Work starts Tuesday so Tom (and I) really wanted to have 2 days to get settled in.
Getting thru the suburbs of Chicago a little tedious, we routed ourselves to avoid toll roads, so ended up on a couple of rough highways. But we saved 50 cents!
We drove the little north western corner of islands you finally arrive at the Michigan Welcome center.
Interstate road conditions much better and had a nice drive. Late lunch and had stop near Grand Rapids. Pulled into park at about 6 pm. It felt good going to bed knowing were didn't have to wake up to another day of driving!

    May 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Had a family and friends filled summer! Parked in site #181 at the Holiday Park Campground just south of Traverse City. Work schedule was typically Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The last couple of months included some Mondays for me, so we always had weekends free.
We were here just in time to attend several awards ceremonies for Spencer, watch him present in the High School "Pitch" contest, and share Tom's bday with family! Posting just a few photos for each month ❤️ with the next foot prints

  • Summer summary, July

    July 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

This was sort of a month of mini vacations for us. Cobbs (plus friends) all headed up to Marquette (Upper Peninsula) for a week of camping, biking and hiking. Tom and I joined for an extended weekend, but elected to hotel it and leave the pets at home. Kind of glad we weren't tenting it because we had periodic rainstorms throughout the visit. Regardless we had time for bike riding around the city, hiking Sugarloaf, farmers market, and time on the rivers edge at the Cobbs campground.
Later that month we took our bikes and drove over to Boyne Mt to check out the Skybridge. Then biked into Boyne City which is the other end of lake Charlevoix. Nice paved ride, 6 miles out and back.

  • Summer Summary, August

    August 15, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

August did not disappoint! Lots of Cali friends for the Cobbs, but we got to see them all as well. Barbie movie event was lots of fun and even Tom dressed up, borrowing clothes from Jeff. Park hosted a Kids Day event and Spencer and Siena joined us, tie-dye, rock painting and more.
We all got together to say goodbye to Spencer as he leaves for college with a big pot luck dinner at the Cobbs. Day trip to Suttons Bay and Leland with a stop at 9 Bean Row for croissants. (These are my favorite gift shopping cities.) As the month came to an end we got a chance to watch Sienna play in a hockey match and a final weekend that included breakfast with Shannon at the Commons, a wonderful bike ride around Boardman Lake, and lunch with all the remaining Cobbs up top at Indigo.
Spent the last part of August with some work days and a couple of days to repack before we start the drive home.
One final dinner out with our family at Burrow restaurant. I can't believe we didn't stop and get a final pic!

  • Heading home, Sept 1st

    September 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 75 °F

We were pretty well packed up yesterday, but had lots of good byes this morning! There 4 couples we have spent the last 3 summers with, and then some new friends from this summer. Even though we are coming back we are sure it will be a visit only without being work campers.
Beautiful day for a drive! Had to keep our hands firmly on the wheel because it was breezy! Headed up to the mighty Mac, and over the UP to Munising which is on the south shore of Superior. Superior is the greatest of all the Great lakes and has a different feel then lake Michigan. Probably just because not so many people live or vacation here. The shoreline is classic Michigan look...
Have always wanted to stay at this particular park-its right on the shore. We didn't get a spot on the water (it is Labor Day weekend!) But certainly had views of the lake. Sites a little rough, but they all had w/e.
Still very windy, but able to have lake time with Charlie!

  • Visit with Spencer

    September 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Got off the slow start this morning- Tom woke up feeling pretty crummy. And worse yet?? No COFFEE! OMG.
Totally forgot to stop and get some. Tore apart RV; no tea bags, no grounds, not even hot cocoa mix...how could I not have anything?
Fortunately (for Tom) I did not drink all my coffee yesterday so I could microwave some for him. Yuck!

Repacked RV and hit the road.
Nice drive through the UP, color just starting, with small clumps of orange and even red peeking out.

Got to our RV Park in Houghton, right on the Portage Lake canal. Houghton is such a cute older, town on the Keweenaw peninsula. It sits on one side of Portage Lake with Hancock on the other side. It skinnies down to a wide canal with only a single lift bridge to get to the other side.

Since Tom was still not feeling well, I met Spencer and we toured the campus and his dorm. Just enjoyed walking (in spite of the 90° weather) and having him talk about his classes and all the resources they offer the students. Quick trip to Walmart for yet another fan for his room, they have no AC!
Then we drove out to the RV to spend time chatting with Tom. We were going to go out, but decided to order take out pizza from the Ambassador and ate in the RV. Quick drive back to his dorm to drop him off.
Note: I have NO pictures of the town, campus or Spencer!!? Huge fail. Am including one of the bridge I downloaded, and a couple from Shannon when she dropped him off at school. Just was not thinking...🤔

    September 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Second stop was the visitor center for the Northern Great Lakes. I left Charlie and Tom in the RV for nap time with the generator still running so they could have some cool air. Nice exhibit, and the AC in the center was in great condition!
Another couple of hours and we were in Duluth. We stayed here once before and I really liked it so we came back. We are parked in a marina just down from the lift bridge in this town. We get to see some really big freighters going by and then watch the bridge raise up to allow them to clear. Even most sail boats require the bridge to lift. Weather was miserably hot and humid. Showered, dinner, bed. End of day thank goodness.

  • Glensheen Mansion

    September 4, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Took it pretty easy this Labor Day Monday. Was able to finally have nice phone visit with Cindy and Chris, life update and devo time. Then spent quite a bit of time getting a hold of KP advice nurse who then connects you with a doctor who makes final diagnosis and recommendations. Then had to confirm a local pharmacy that would take California call in prescription. Then back to advice nurse who then sendd message to our actual doc in Fresno who calls in order. A little convoluted process, especially on Labor Day!

Finally solved most of that and headed out to do a little sightseeing on my own. I visited the Glensheen Mansion which is located on the north shore drive of Lake Superior. Beautiful brick mansion, carriage house, gardeners cottage, boathouse and grounds. Just spent the afternoon wandering and enjoying this self-guided tour. It was built in the very early 1900s, and most furniture and accessories are original to the house since the family still lived there until 1977. It actually has a sort of bizarre back story with one of the daughters and maid being murdered.

Checked on prescription, still not ready, pharmacy closed early because of holiday....arrrgh. Back to RV and just enjoyed viewing the lights of the bridge and town from our spot in the Marina.

  • Heading west to St.Cloud

    September 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Woke up to this beautiful, still morning. I never get tired of Marina views, and the reflections in the water were awesome. We dawdle around a little bit because I still had to pick Tom's prescription. Since the pharmacy was clear across town it made more sense to go by jeep. Once back we finished packing up and hooking jeep up.

We only had about 200 miles to go so I took a slightly longer route around one the larger lakes (of the 10,000 found in the state) Mille Lacs. This lake was large enough that you really couldn't see to the opposite shore. But it was a large shallow lake and just lacked the charm of the many lakes in Michigan. (It almost seemed like Minnesota's version of Clear Lake, but with a flat wooded topography.) Nice cool day for traveling and had some rain.

Grabbed some lunch at McDonald's and finished the day driving into St. Cloud. This fairly good size city is about 45 miles north of Minneapolis. Just seemed liked a nice quiet park to leave Tom and the RV. Only drawback is no cable, just weak over the air signals and relatively good wi-fi so Tom could stream some TV shows. Should have checked ammenties more closely!?

Nicely spaced sites...and even though slightly older park, it has been well maintained! Individual restroom and shower set up as opposed to large gender specific restroom/ shower rooms. Lots of nice walking areas for Charlie

  • Temp home for Tom

    September 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Cool morning to start our day. Since Tom has come down I have been testing myself reach morning for Covid. Still negative!

We don't have a huge agenda today, but want to make sure I am all set for flying to California tomorrow. Tackled shuttle arrangements, we practiced driving to shuttle location (about 5 miles from park), completed laundry, bought groceries, and did a general clean out of refrigerator. (If what ever food item Tom is looking for does not appear at the front of the shelf, he won't find it! ) Also had to make some play time for Charlie!
Then needed to give some thought to what I was taking for my trip to Fresno and get packed up. It was a full day, but I did check all the boxes!

The Shuttle with pretty full, maybe one empty seat... It's about an hour drive from here to Minneapolis airport. The whole way getting updates about delays to my flight, so by the time I got to the airport I had about 2.5 hours to spare!

Decided to go ahead and eat since my layover was getting shorter and shorter... And then finally got a notification that I was being rerouted. Final itinerary had my flying through Phoenix instead of Dallas, but ultimate arrival was only about 30 minutes later then original flight.

Linley and Clarke picked me up at airport and think I was in bed by 9:30 California time! Slept great!

  • 50th Reunion, pre-party

    September 8, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 95 °F

Slept great, but did get going so I could make a scheduled dentist appointment at 9:00 am. Then back to Linleys for some morning chat time.

Cindy picked me up and she and I met Jeanie at the Swim and Racquet club for lunch. Jeanie was going to be out of town for the weekend and this was our best chance to all get together. It was so nice catching up!

Spent the afternoon at Linleys and showered and changed for the informal pre party event at Paula DeYoung's home. Bridget came over to the house so linley and I could confirmed her attire choices...Clarke served as our chauffer for the entire weekend!

Paula has a large, beautiful home on Van Ness extension and the party was in the back yard around the pool (with fountain) and (2 story!) pool house. The event was really well attended and all three of us kind of splintered and chatted with various friends; some well remembered and some we didn't even know had graduated with us!?

Only drawback was the heat and humidity... And mosquitoes! Wow, I might have well been in Michigan! It was so warm I really didn't feel like drinking wine and pretty much stuck to water until it got dark and I finally got to the wine table. Imagine - every one you walk by, your need to stop and say "hi" to!

Clarke picked us up, and because none of us had eaten (too much talking) we (the 4 of us) went and had a late dinner at the elbow room, with AIR CONDITIONING!

Am very disappointed in myself, I have NO pictures. I think I was too busy chatting? Found some on our FB page to share

  • BHS 50th Reunion

    September 9, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 95 °F

Wow, my mind was so stimulated from lots of conversations I could barely fall asleep. Did some reading, did some sleep meditations, I even tried watching a TV show on my phone! At 6 am just resigned to the fact I was not going to sleep; so got up and worked on Quicken...I think (maybe) I got 2 hours??
And the bigger event is tonight!
Coffee and pastries with linley and Clarke, and then Bridget joined us.

We ended up joining Jeff and Betsy Pash, Jeff's mom, the three of us and Tim Baker for lunch at San Joaquin CC. it has been So hot the night before that we all looked forward to lunch inside. Well darn, Tim decided that we all needed to eat on the patio, outside, because of the "wonderful" view of the course and river bottom!
But we did have a really nice lunch and time with Pashs... and with a nod to Kristi, I had a spritzer for lunch. Excellent!

We all showered and changed that afternoon for the reunion out at San Joaquin. Clarke dropped us off again. The reunion committee really set up the venue so nicely. Lots of effort to give it the feel of the knights! It was an inside affair, no host bar, a little entertainment, buffet dinner, and dessert table. We were hopeful for air conditioning- but either the system was a little under designed or we were one "hot" group...another event that was incredibly warm. I had to take some outside breathers (there was a tiny breeze) just to cool down a little.

But regardless of the heat, we all had a great time! I spoke to SO many more people than the first night. The attendees were all there to enjoy seeing each other again-it started at 6 and I think the group finally broke up at about 10 pm or maybe later. Our "chauffer" picked us up and took us home for a three-way (Linley, Bridget and I) debrief on the event. Fell into bed at about 1 am!

Again- I have NO pics. Downloaded some from the FB page.
