    Camp #72 - Pino Dulce

    120 Guatemala quetzales (around £12) for the two of us tonight.
    At 2,400m altitude it's a little colder than we've had the past few months. At 4pm when we turned up, it was 13°c. All day it had been around 28c until we started to climb, so it will be a cold night for sure. The blankets are out and in the tent ready for the night.
    It's a big park, but it shuts at 4pm, when we got here there was some people still here but they all left shortly after we arrived. Maybe we smell?

    The road here was interesting. Google sent us a way which saved 2 minutes. But it really was a 4x4 track, climbing up steep incline, gaining altitude and overtaking all the slow people. It was reassuring that most of the vehicles we saw and overtook on our way up were also Toyota. Confidence that we are in the right vehicle for sure.

    Abort mission volcan de Acatenango

    We had booked on to climb Volcan de Acatenango with Wicho and Charlie. Unfortunately the morning before our hike (Wednesday at 2:30am) there was a larger than normal eruption causing a forest fire and people had to be evacuated off the volcano in the middle of the night.
    We were told on Wednesday evening our hike on the Thursday would be going ahead.

    We got to the camp store Thursday morning, ready to check in and get going. We finally get on the bus and hit road blocks from protesters. 3.5 hours later (normally a 45 minutes drive) we were still not at the bottom of the hike and it was called off by the government as wind picked up and restarted the forest fires.     Sunrise hike - Indian Nose

    A sunrise hike up Indian Nose.

    But not without problems 😂

    3:30am alarm to be picked up at 4am

    The town we are staying next to (San Marcos) is known for being a hippie town.

    We had to pickup 10 hippies before heading to the hike. Unfortunately they only packed a speaker, some cameras and no water.

    It ended up with me over-reacting and causing some tension in the bus.

    Anyway the hike was down. We saw sunrise and back down. Now its time for a nap I think.    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #75 - Eventos Verde (Antigua)

    We're back in Antigua again. Hopefully to do Volcan de Acatenango this time.

    Eventos Verde is a big event space, but for 75q a night (about £7.50) we can't complain. It's a beautiful, well maintained gardens for a big event space where they have weddings and parties.

    Isaac is a keen runner, but doesn't know much apart from Spanish, so appreciated the little Spanish I did try to speak with him and alllll the Spanish that Laura did speak to him in.    Okumaya devam et

    Santa Ana volcano

    Santa Ana volcano, you are want to take a guide up (which is free, you just pay the $6 park entry) however I got there way before any group did and refused the guide. I managed to get up and half way back down before I passed any groups going up. This meant I had the view all to myself.

    Unfortunately Laura sat this one out as her legs were still aching from the Acatenango volcano hike.

    You could even see the truck/surfboards on the truck, parked at the camp site from various parts of the hike up.    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #78 - Mizata beach

    $6 for the night

    An OK little camp spot on the beach. Not a lot around except the surf.

    Just the one toilet which let much to be desired and an outdoor shower.

    A drunk man wondering around came up to me when we arrived and I played the "I don't speak Spanish" card and ignored him from there.

    We enjoyed our evening, Laura reading her kindle whilst I watched YouTube on the hammock. We went to bed, only to wake up to find our hammock had been stolen.

    When speaking to a group of surfers camped next to us, one mentioned that the drunk guy was the uncle of the owner and often steals things which sometimes appear again a few days later. We challenged but got no where with it. It's a shame as it wasn't a cheap hammock, but if it's the only thing taken in 6 months maybe we can live with that.    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #79 - Hammock plantation hostel

    3 Mart 2023, El Salvador

    Hammock plantation hostel. We saw this on YouTube. They have a pool and is owned by a Salvadorian/Dutch couple.

    It was nice to meet several backpackers here and just chill for the day after waking up and being frustrated for the stolen hammock.

    $10 for the night.

    It's only a short walk down to the beach where there are some natural pools which were free to use on the weekday (paid entry as part of a resort on the weekend)    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #80 - Rancho Alicia

    $5/per person, plus $5 for power.

    A beach spot in El Salvador. We had planned to stay for just a night but ended up staying for 2. The beach was great for our morning runs, lucky timing that the tide was out.

    On our second day there, @venjatravel turned up. We had camped near them in Antigua, Guatemala. They are a German family with a 4 year old boy and nearly 2 year old girl in an awesome VW transporter (T3?) synchro that has a custom built camper unit.    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #81 - El Espíritu de la Montaña

    $5 entry up the private road
    $7 per person, per night to camp.
    $19 in total, but we have views of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

    To get here it takes around 30 minutes up the private track, which is a track you really want a 4x4 with high clearance. Most tourist come on a large safari style bus truck and you can rent a tent plus sleeping bag at the top and camp the night, but of course we had the luxury of our own home.

    The views of sunrise from here is meant to be amazing. We got up at 5:30 to watch and film sunrise, and unfortunately it was mostly clouded over. So we watched for a bit before deciding to pack up and hit the road (it's a double crossing day into Honduras and Nicaragua)

    Regardless, it was a great spot to visit, some good views and a much cooler place to sleep as it was much higher and in a pine tree forest than where we had been sleeping recently.    Okumaya devam et

    Re-entering Honduras 🇭🇳

    Re-entering Honduras. We had to get a vehicle import permit again as they cancelled ours when we left last time. But this time the booth was full of fellow travellers stickers. We added ours.

    Randomly we had to park on a bridge to have our covid checks. We got lucky, even though we have our vaccinations, they didn't ask to see them this time and just gave us a slip to say we'd gone through the process. Our friends at @venjatravel didn't have this luck and their children aren't vaccinated so we're told they needed PCR tests and after some debate (and a "$50 fee") they were allowed through.     Crossing into Nicaragua 🇳🇮

    Crossing into Nicaragua today.
    After leaving Honduras (again) we had to do our covid tests/vaccine records to go through the rest of customs. This was a bit unofficial. But flash the NHS report and our passports. Get a scrap piece of paper. But you had to stand up at a random booth.

    We met a random dude who was obsessed with us and our truck, we gave him a sticker which he added to his bike 😂

    We had to have the truck searched when entering Nicaragua. We were asked a few times if we had a drone and if we had a camera.

    After entry, it was a quick stop to buy some car insurance (which we didn't need for Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras) and then onwards!    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #82 - Restaurante La Vista

    Our first night in Nicaragua
    358 NIO for the night.

    After being there for a couple of hours and sitting in the restaurant with some drinks and dinner, our friends @venjatravel finally arrived. They had stayed at the beach in El when we went to the mountains for our final night but had challenges with covid tests in Honduras and Nicaragua and we were an hour closer to the border when we left and started very early due to watching sunrise.

    Not the most beautiful camp site we've stayed at, but it was safe, locked up with a security guard and WiFi.

    In the morning, as I was packing away the tent, I didn't want to my shoes and socks on as it was hot, so asked Laura to pass me my flip flops. I then forgot to remove my shoes from the roof of the truck (under the tent, where we store them whilst we sleep overnight). That was the last time my shoes would be seen! (apart from the dash cam footage showing them fall off)    Okumaya devam et

    Camp #83 - Cerro Negro national Park

    $5 per person for national park entry
    $5 per person for camping

    A night at the volcano where you can go volcano boarding

    If you take a tour it's at least $40 per a person, so we got a bargain by driving ourselves. I climbed up the rode down the volcano two and a half times (yes a half, because I went straight up the steep bit until it got to steep, where I then got stuck, so I had to ride the board down and then hike up the correct way) before we set off around the corner to camp for the night.Okumaya devam et

    Camp #84 - La Casa Aventura (Popoyo)

    La Casa Aventura in Popoyo.
    Turns out it's not actually in Popoyo, it's down the beach and across the river to it. Which isn't that bad a walk until you get to the river which gets to neck deep, so crossing it is a challenge and driving is 20 minutes as its not a straight line, you've got to get out of town and around.

    Other than there not being a lot around (except the beach) it's a beautiful camp site. There is currently construction working being carried out. So we are the only campers there and a couple of long term residents.

    We really enjoyed Popoyo, although we had to drive to the beginner surf spot and stay here was really nice. The people were nice, everything was available and clean, but it was $20 a night (which I think they plan to increase once the construction finishes and they open up properly again)    Okumaya devam et
