The Palace of Parliament (formerly the People's Palace) is a record-breaking building: made entirely of marble, it is the heaviest structure in the world, and with its numerous floors (some underground), it is also the second-largest building in the world by area, after the Pentagon.

Its construction, during Ceausescu's dictatorship, required an incredible economic and human effort. Today, it houses the Constitutional Court and the Romanian Parliament, as well as various event halls and museums.

This building is also the symbol of the city and the most important touristic attraction of Bucharest.

  • Bucharest metro lines

    August 8, 2024 in Romania ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The city of Bucharest has a metro system with five lines. Unfortunately, the line that will connect the center to the airport (M6) is still under construction, so to reach the airport, the only solution is a bus.

The metro is very clean, and the stations are quite elegant, a feature of many of the former-communist contries I have visited.

  • Triumphal Arch of Bucharest

    August 8, 2024 in Romania ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The Arch of Triumph in Bucharest is, along with the Parliament, one of the most important monuments in the city.

It celebrates Romania's victory in World War I and its aesthetics recalls the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, built a century earlier.
The Romanian Arch is in neoclassical style, standing 26 meters tall, and serves also as set for the military parades held annually on Romania National Day.

In the summer, at 7:30 PM, with the sun setting and without the rush hour traffic, this monument shows its best side.

In front of the building stands a memorial dedicated to those who fought against communism between 1945 and 1989. The monument features three stainless steel wings, each reaching a height of 28 meters. These wings symbolize the Holy Trinity carrying the souls of the victims of the communist regime to heaven.

  • Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral

    August 9, 2024 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

The Dealul Mitropoliei Hill is home to some of the most important religious buildings of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The hill is accessed through Strada Patriarhiei, which is a small lined street with small shops selling religious icons and buildings with highly decorated doors and walls.

The complex includes the Patriarchal Cathedral, dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helena, built in 1658 in the Brâncovenesc style.
At the end of the mass some local old ladies offered us bread and holy water to drink and eat. Right after, we could enter to see the church's decorations in the walls and roofs.

Nearby are the ancient monastic cells, the Patriarchal Palace, the chapel, and a former Chamber of Deputies.

The Romanian Orthodox Church, independent from Constantinople since 1925, is the second-largest Orthodox Church after the Russian one, and this hill represents its heart.

Pastrami is the most famous dish in Romanian cuisine. Although it became popular worldwide thanks to the US, this dish was invented in Romania and then reached the US thanks to the migrations of Jewish communities from Russia and Romania to the US.

Pastrami is essentially a method of preserving beef by brining it, drying it, and then smoking it. The result, similar in appearance to ham, is used to fill sandwiches or is eaten with vegetables.

Along the streets, bakeries also offer excellent snacks and food for tasty breakfasts and snacks,
