The NC500 is often sold as Scotland’s Route 66. That’s a lazy comparison. Route 66 is neon signs, desert straights, and Americana kitsch. The NC500 is castles, cliffs, rain, and silence. It is about remoteness, resilience, and surprise.

What struck me most was the variety. In a single day you could pass a French-style castle, a beach that looked like the Caribbean, and a mountain road that felt like the Alps. Yet the Highlands are not just scenery. They are lived-in places: crofting villages, pubs, harbours, distilleries. They are landscapes shaped by people, not empty wilderness.

Vanilla made the journey possible. A campervan is more than a vehicle on a trip like this. It is a home, a shelter against Atlantic winds, a kettle for tea when the rain doesn’t stop. Each campsite, each roadside stop, was made mine because Vanilla was there.

In the end, the NC500 didn’t feel like a loop around Scotland. It felt like a loop inward — a reminder of why travel matters. Not to tick boxes, but to let landscapes reshape how you see distance, weather, and even yourself.
