    What's worse than being on a 78 seater plane and hitting a thunder storm 😷😓 ......Having to run through the airport to get onto another one directly after 😣 from Warsaw to Krakow.

    Poor Steve has a bruised leg from where I gripped his leg so hard!

    Krakow

    We arrived in Krakow via a short train ride from the airport and found our accomodation - Sereno Apartments; a great little place just a 5 minute walk from the Old Town. Tonight we ventured into to the Old Town and found a quirky place to eat called KoKo, a great student/ backpacker atmosphere in the cellar of the bar where we had 2 courses and a pint for £4! Bargin! 🍻

    This morning we had a 6am start to get ourselves to the Salt Mines. An interesting tour of the mine and they have made great access for the tourists. Reaping the benefits of the salty air we saw lots of carvings, but they were mainly religious scenes and we couldn't help but think some Disney scenes would have been more entertaining 😊. I did however have Charlie and the Chocolate Factory flashbacks when the guide encouraged us to lick the walls to see what they tasted like... surprisingly like salt 😝.
    The mines were worth the trip, however, they didn't top our slate mine experience in Snowdonia a few months back #youcantakeagirloutofwales... 🐑

    We have spent the afternoon in Krakow Old Square eating some lunch and soaking up the atmosphere and will continue to do so tonight, I'm hoping to taste some traditional Polish cuisine 🍴🍺. We've just booked onto an Auschwitz tour for tomorrow morning through Sereno Apartments, which I'm sure will be eye-opening.

    Krakow continued:
    Auschwitz and Auschwitz II-Birkenau - Our tour was organised with the company See Krakow which included transport to and from the camps and an English speaking guide for the duration of the tour, who, for me made the experience very informative and emotive.

    It was essential to visit both parts of the camp, in order to acquire a proper sense of the place that has become the symbol of the Holocaust as well as Nazi crimes againt Poles, Romas and other groups.

    It's impossible to put this experience into words, and I almost feel that I shouldn't attempt to. I encourage everybody who has the opportunity to go and visit both Auschwitz sites to learn the reality of what happened here during 1940 and 1945.

    Later this day we spent walking through the grounds of Wawel Castle, quite pleasant topped off with an icecream.🍦🍦

    Schindler's Factory - during our stay in Krakow we have also visited Schindler's Factory- An interactive and educational experience which exhibited life in Krakow before, during and after WW2. A small section of the museum was also dedicated to Oskar Schinlder, where exhibits depicted his dedication to saving the lives of the Jews that worked in his factory.

    The weather has picked up now and it's lovely and hot 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞. The rest of our time has been spent soaking up the atmosphere in Krakow's Old Town and Jewish quarter, enjoying the hustle and bustle and enjoying the local cuisine, such as Pierogi 😊.    Read more

    We loved Krakow! ❤

    What a great city! - The places we visited were jam-packed with history and culture, the locals were so friendly and helpful, the local cuisine was delish, the weather, HOT🌞 and the accomodation was ideal. The company wasn't so bad either 😛.

    On our last day we went to the top of St Mary's Church Tower in the Old Town Square (which I mention quite a bit during our time in Krakow). See the pics attached.

    Milan - Ciao Bellas

    We've arrived in Milan and it's HOTTTTTT (UNDERSTATEMENT) 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

    We walked from Milano Centrale railway station to our first Airbnb accomodation with our backpacks...

    You know when you envision being in Milan - The Fashion Capital of Italy....and you think "it would be quite nice to embrace a bit of fashion and look a little glam like the Italian Bellas" well NO SUCH CHANCE! You've never seen such a hot sweaty mess in all your life 😰!!!! But... i'll embrace it! We're in Italy after all 💙.

    In other news we had some lush pasta sat next to the Canal it was v nice, and we sussed out the Metro system.

    Steve's currently watching the Wales match all he has to add is "I hope Wales win". 😛

    3 Nights in Milan

    We're currently on a (swanky) train travelling from Milan to the next destination of the BIG Trip! 🚄

    Here's the latest...

    We planned for two full days in Milan, however, on the first day we managed to see and do a lot knowing that a thunder storm was on its way due to the heat. 🌞☁☁☁

    Firstly we climbed to the top of the Milan Duomo and got some great shots of the Cathedrals architecture. We didn't go inside the Cathedral though because our clothing was too revealing 😮. But why see a Cathedral from the inside when you can stand on the roof!👌

    Next we wandered through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where the rich shop in the likes of Prada and Versace.

    After this we walked through the grounds of the Sforza castle and the Parco Sempione beyond it to the Arch of Peace.

    Finally we had the most delicious gelatos from Van Bol & Feste - White Chololate gelato MMMMM.    Read more

    Lake Como

    Today we took a spontaneous trip to Lake Como! Only an hour train ride from Milan. The lake was stunning and we took the funicular railway to the top of Como to see the amazing panoramic views of the lake. We could even see as far as the snow capped Swiss Alps which was hard to believe when stood in 29°C heat! 😎

    We reached different view points at the top (many selfies were taken) 📷.

    Steve managed to leave his phone on the bench at one of them which resulted in an Italian/ German led man hunt for Steve. They were very glad when they found him and reunited him with his phone/ "handi" (in German) 😄

    We had lunch with a view and then took the (long, hot, sweaty) hike up to the lighthouse (only finding out about the 2 minute shuttle bus to and from the top once we got up there!!!! 😥) #steveowesme

    More great views, more selfies, more steps, more sweat but a good time was had 😁.

    Story of boy meets girl

    We've been in Verona for 3 days - The home of Romeo and Juliette 💑

    We're staying in an apartment, again arranged through Airbnb and it is spot on! (It has air con!! 😁) It's a perfect location, just around the corner from Juliette's balcony.

    We have climbed to the top of Castel Sanpietro and Torre Dei Lamberti (clock tower) for panoramic views across Verona. We have also visited the Castelvecchio museum and bridge (over the Adije River) and enjoyed the atmosphere of both Piazza Brà and Piazza Erbe.

    Yesterday morning we went to the Roman Arena and couldn't help but think we were missing a trick if we didn't watch a performance in this huge amphitheatre!

    So it was decided, we were off to the Opera! We watched La Traviata, and we weren't disappointed it was bloomin' brilliant!

    We'll just remember to take our own cushions next time! To note - The Roman marble is hot hot hot 🔥    Read more

    Venice, get lost!

    As soon as we stepped off the train the reality of beautiful Venice hit me as the canal flowed right in front of the train station. We elbowed our way onto the vaporetto and travelled down the Grand canal to our airbnb stop at the Rialto Bridge.

    We stayed in the heart of St Marco and could even watch and hear the gondolas serenade past our balcony ❤.

    What a maze Venice is! Our first afternoon in Venice was a mix between finding out where we were and trying to get ourselves off the beaten track and away from the hoards of tourists!

    The weather again was super hot! 🌞🌞🌞so over a couple of days we had short jaunts out of the appartment to see the sights and then back to cool down 😓.

    We went to the top of Campanile Di San Marco for the stunning panoramic view of Venice. Steve and I also visited St Marc's Basilica and the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's palace) in St Marco's square, where we crossed the Bridge of Sighs - famously named because the prisoners would 'sigh' as they glanced at the beauty of Venice for the last time before being booted straight to the prison cells beyond it.

    Murano & Burano, island hopping

    We took a day trip away from the crowds of Venice to the island's of Murano & Burano.

    Murano is famous for its hand made glass sculptures and glass blowing workshops. A collection of assorted sculptures decorated the shops ranging from a 1m tall, minature human pyramid to a goldfish inside a pelecan! With lots of glass souveniour shops to choose from it was surprisingly hard to find a shop where we both agreed on something we liked, two glass sweets!

    The challenge was accepted!! To try and get them through the trip and back home in one piece. All will be revealed when we unpack them at home.

    Burano was an island which we absolutely loved, with the contrasting colourful houses each painted individually. We would encourage a visit if you're in the area 💜💛💚💙❤    Read more

    Fresco's in Florence

    Florence is GORGEOUS 💜! Both Steve and I agree that it's our favourite city so far 😍! We would love to come back and explore more of Tuscany in the future, (the list of places we want to travel to gets longer everyday 😄). #bucketlist!

    Florence again was action packed for us. We dumped the bags at our accomodation and headed for Piazzale Michelangelo in the 36°C heat! 🌞🌞🌞🌞 (refer to hot, delusional selfies). To get here we crossed Ponte Vecchio - The bridge across the river Arno where many jewelers shops line either side of the bridge, enticing lovers with pricey diamonds! 😍

    It's 2 weeks since we arrived in Italy and during this time I've learnt that travelling with a Civil Engineer means going to the top of every tall structure in the city!

    In Florence the 'tall structures' are hard to miss! The Campanile Di Giotto (bell tower) and the Santa Maria Duomo stand tall in the Centre of Piazza Del Duomo and they are a must- see! The dome of the Cathedral is immense and you can get up close and personal with the dramatic paintings depicting scenes of Hell, right before popping out of the top to see the pano's of Florence.

    A favourite place of ours was the Mercato Centrale - with a traditional food market on the lower level and a modern gourmet food court on the upper level. It was definitely a case of 'eyes bigger than your belly' or 'eyes bigger than our wallet' (in our case) We could have hopped from stand to stand all day long tasting all of Italy's specialities! 😊

    On that note we have tasted our fair share of gelato, both tasting a different flavour every day! THEY ARE JUST SO GOOD!!!!    Read more

    A Piece of Pisa

    Pisa was an hour train ride away from Florence and of course we made our way to the leaning tower of Pisa and the Duomo.

    Unexpectedly however it started raining!💧💧 💧💧☔The first time we have had rain on our trip but it was a refreshing change from the stifling heat!

    It was entertaining to watch so many tourists pull the 'Pisa pose' in sync, knowing full well that we were about to join in 😄.

    We got the full Pisa experience by getting tickets (in advance) to go up to the top of the tower. A spiral stair case on a 4 degree tilt made for a dizzy descent.    Read more

    Rome Sweet Rome

    We stayed at Armarndo's Airbnb stay 🏠 and it was PERFECT! He completely undersold this place which was in a great location, around the corner from Piazza Navona and Piazza Fiori! Armando was so helpful and I would recommend this accomodation to anyone on a city break to Rome.

    On our first day in Rome we hopped straight to it and visited Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Del Popolo. We also made it to the Spanish Steps to find that they were closed, no thanks to Bvlgari!!😣

    We later found out that a few of the famous Rome landmarks and attractions have recently been closed off due to luxury fashion designers funding a restoration or clean up of the site in order to promote their fashion brand. Tods shoe designer recently cleaned the Colosseum which cost them 25 million Euros 💵.

    We booked onto a tour of the Roman Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. Although it was good to have a guided tour we did feel that our time in the colosseum was a bit rushed and Steve would have liked to have taken more photos.

    On that note, Steve's photo count is at 1,824! We're going to have fun selecting the ones to put into this year's holiday photo book... (which has become a yearly tradition now 😊). Who's turn is it this year Steve??? 😉

    We also visited the Vatican Museums and THANKFULLY hopped, skipped and jumped right past the 2 hour long queue to get in! "neh neh 😆" couldn't help but feel smug that we booked online in advance. Later in the afternoon we climbed to the top of St Peter's cupola (dome) for great views across the city.

    It's got to the point that I don't know what day of the week it is any more, I just count the number of nights I have in a city and be mindful that we have a train or a plane to catch! 😍 #earlyretirement    Read more

    Sights and Smells of Bangkok

    We arrived into Bangkok airport and managed to get through passport control by sneaking into the priority queue - Steve strikes again 😊.

    We're staying in a hotel close to Koh San Road. We tried to catch up on some missed sleep then ventured to Koh San Road where we had our first taste of Phad Thai from a street vendor- a really good change from pizza and pasta dishes🍕🍝.

    We're already experiencing a big culture change compared with Italy and it's really refreshing. The smells of Bangkok smack you in the face as you walk down the street, from fermented fish (not so refreshing 😝) to the mixed spices which flavour the Thai curries😍.

    On our 1st night we couldn't resist getting a 30 minute Thai foot massage for 150 baht (£3)! This was very much needed after all the walking we have done on this trip so far 😊. I don't know how, but I managed to get the more pain inflicting massuse! Whilst Steve had a nice relaxing foot massage next to me, my woman decided to flex my leg up towards my head!!! I had to laugh and grip Steve's hand. Couldn't help but think the woman enjoyed stretching my leg and inflicting this kind of pain on me! I was too scared to go for the full hour Thai message after that!

    We have visited several temples in Bangkok including the Grand Palace - Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho - The temple of the reclining budda and Wat Arun - The temple of dawn. We got to wear some very fetching outfits at these places because we forgot to cover up (oops).

    We also went on a half day tour, firstly stopping at the Maeklong Railway Market 🚂🚃🚃🚃; famous for the daring market vendors who line either side of the railway tracks selling their produce. We walked down the middle of the track and took in the assortment of the fresh produce.

    At 9am the horn signaled the arrival of the train. Very quickly the vendors moved their engineered stalls backwards and instructed us to stand back with them as the train went through. We managed to catch this scene on video!

    For the 2nd half of the tour we arrived at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. This place was a hive of activity with vendors lining the water banks. I finally got the 'gondola' experience (minus the singing) that we missed out on in Venice, but instead of €80 for 40 minutes it was £6 for 30 mins to float around the market! Steve and I shared a pork noodle soup made by a little man on his paddle boat 😊🍲.

    An evening at "The Calypso Cabaret" was an interesting experience... It was a night of various renditions of camp classics from around the world performed by an equally camp collection of boys and lady- boys. However, even under close inspection, some of the transformations had to be seen to be believed they were incredible!    Read more

    The big B! Kota Kinabalu

    On our first day in Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) we took a boat to the Bunga Raya Resort on Gaya Island. This private resort was simply stunning! Crystal clear, warm sea and soft white sand beneath our feet - this is my idea of paradise 😄. We quickly grabbed some snorkels and off we went into the sea! 🌊We saw a blue star fish, clown fish (aka Nemo) and a clam. TO NOTE: suncreaming your bottom when snorkelling is recommended! 😖...
    After lunch we practically had the beach to ourselves, the water was so calm it felt like a lake 😍.

    On our second day we were picked up by our tour guide and together we took a drive to Kinabalu Park, the starting point for the climbers of Mt Kinabalu. We had a short tour of the botanical gardens, but unfortunately not many of the flowers were in bloom. Our guide took us onwards to Kinabalu Poring Hot Springs where we ascended the tree top canopy. Hanging bridges created a 50m high walkway above the forest floor.

    Later on, we followed a path which arrived at a small waterfall. We paddled in the water and the small fish came to nibble at our feet, just as they would at a fish spa.    Read more

    Sakau River Safari

    We woke up at 4.30am in Kota Kinabalu for the long day ahead. Firstly we caught the 7am flight to Sandakan where we were transfered directly to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre just in time to watch the orphaned orangutans arrive at the feeding platform 🙊. This was our first sighting of orangutans in Borneo and we could have watched them swinging through the trees all day! We also got the chance to visit the outdoor nursery where the baby orangutans are being encouraged to learn to climb, swing and play as they will do once released into the wild. One cheeky Orangutan just wanted to do rolly pollies on the lawn and one of the centres workers had to chase her about 😁.
    After this we also visited the Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centre where the sleepy bears were in the trees or foraging.

    In the afternoon we continued to Sakau Greenview Lodge, situated on the banks of the Kinabatangan River. This was home for the next few days. On arrival we were told of our action packed itinerary for the duration of our stay💪.

    At 4pm we were to take our afternoon boat cruise for our first river safari! During our stay we had 2 early morning cruises, 2 afternoon cruises and 1 night cruise. We were on the river for 2 hours at a time on the look out for wildlife, along with our guide Jeffery 😎,who had eyes like a sniper! He could see things a mile off which always impressed Steve and I. Other activities included a jungle trek and a night trek.

    Unfortunately we didn't see any Pygmy Elephants because the heard had migrated down stream 😔🐘🐘🐘.

    I could talk to you about this place all day long 😀(and I'm sure I will when I'm home!). The few days spent here has definitely been one of the highlights of our trip so far! Some of the animals we saw included a Cat-Snake, Monitor Lizards, Probosis Monkeys, Long-Tailed Makaks, Grey Leaf Monkeys, a baby Crocodile, Hornbills, Blue Kingfishers, Green Lizards, Serpent Eagles, stick insects and of course Orangutans. 🐍🐒    Read more

    Indiana Jones and The Cave Of Doom

    On our last day in Sakau, our guide Jeffery took us to Gomantong Caves, home to millions of bats and... what he forgot to tell us, home to millions of cockroaches. The smell of the cave when approaching it was a sure sign of things to come, IT REAKED! 💩 Amongst the wrything cockroach infested surfaces, long-legged centipiedes, spiders, rats, beatles and swiftlets made their home. All of these creatures feasted on the bat droppings that has fallen to form a huge heap below.

    This was the closest I was EVER going to get to an Indiana Jones experience!!!!💀 - The cockroaches were all over the board-walk, hand rails and walls. If one wasn't careful,  you would hear a crunch underfoot as you went by.

    We all made our way along the boardwalk 👣👣, a constant challenge and battle for us and both proud to say we did it!👫 We made it to the end 👏and out just in time to watch the exodus of the millions of bats as dusk fell.

    When I asked Jeffery why there were no other tourists here, he basically summed it up as it doesn't attract too many tourists & children👪, NOW I KNOW WHY!

    After that I wouldn't have been surprised if they had served us monkey brains for dinner!🙊

    On a brighter note, this afternoon was also the closest we've gotten to wild orangutans 🐵.  There were three of them in total. We witnessed a mother orangutan breast feed her baby. It was amazing to watch! 😍    Read more

    Sandakan, Malaysia

    It was now time to move on from Sakau. Our busy itinerary has meant that we feel like we have been in Borneo for ages, with our travels in Europe becoming a distant memory.

    We travelled to Sandakan by overland journey 🚗, and on the way stopped at the Sandakan War Memorial. This was where we learnt about the Japanese occupation of Borneo during WW2 and the struggles the allied POW's faced during the occupation and the so called "death marches".

    The same afternoon we stopped at the Rainforest Discovery Centre to take a bird's eye view of the tree tops from the canopy walkway and hanging bridge before we explored the botanical garden, home to various species of flora and fauna.🌸🌹🌺🌷🌿🌻🌼

    Following our bat cave experience 😣 and sharing a room with 3 lizards, we were due some luxury! 🌴...

    We stayed a night in the Sepilok Nature Resort where we relaxed in the pool 👙 (the first one on our travels!). The following morning, we made our way to the jetty to catch a speed boat to Lankayan Island... 🌴🌴🌴    Read more

    Paradise Island of the Sulu Sea

    Our speed boat pulled up to the island's jetty and my jaw dropped to the floor 😍😃. In fact, we spent the next few days with our eyes wide open trying to absorb the beauty of this island. Lankayan was a little piece of heaven in the Sulu Sea. 🌴🌊❤

    A couple dozen cabins were dotted along the sand where the jungle met the sea, and I felt relaxed knowing I wouldn't be sharing our room with any lizards 😆.

    During our short time on the island we had a few options... lie horizontally, eat, sleep, dive or snorkel 🐠🐟.

    Steve chose the full on, three dives in a day option while I chose the lie horizontally on the beach and bed option. He really enjoyed the ship wreck dive, seeing the assortment of marine life such as small sharks, turtles and the colourful coral.

    The sea was crystal clear and we could look into the water from the raised walkways and spot turtles and tropical fish.

    The small stretch of sand was post-card like and the whole beach was ours! We could have swam in our birthday suits and no one would have known 😲...

    If all of this wasn't enough, at 5.30 pm each night we were called to witness Green Turtles hatching. At the hatchery we learnt about the conservation of the turtles and watched in amazement as approximately 150 turtles emerged from 2 nests. Once they had made their way out of the sand they were counted and taken down to the beach.

    Carefully the turtles were released onto the sand where they quickly found their way into the sea instinctively. Watching them begin their journey into the ocean was an amazing experience!

    Cwtching in Kuching

    Too soon the time came when we had to leave Lankayan Island 😣. (Kicking & screaming) we returned to the mainland by speed boat and caught our flight to Kuching ✈.

    The next morning we were picked up by our guide and we ventured to Bako National Park, notable for its incredible biodiversity. Our guide was Alex, a very enthusiastic individual and he clearly had a love for nature 🐛.

    We arrived at Bako via boat ride and waded onto the shore barefoot where we were greeted by Macaques on the beach foraging for flowers. As we progressed inland, other animals emerged such as more probosis monkeys, bearded pigs, silver leaf monkeys and a green pit viper.

    Alex took us on an unexpected and very sweaty jungle hike. This led us to a sandstone plateau where the search for various species of carnivorous plants began.

    Throughout the plateau we found pitcher plants of varying sizes. These ranged from the size of your little finger to ones as large as a water bottle! The plants lie waiting for an unsuspecting creature to venture a little too close to its edge, fall in and inevitably get digested alive by the juices within.

    Along the trail we came across a small snake lying on the path. Unsure what type of snake it was, Alex asked us what colour it was. We bent down to take a closer look and replied "redish brown". Flicking through his personalised snake book he was not 100% certain on the species and we moved on...

    At the jetty awaiting to leave Bako we got talking to another guide who excitedly told Alex that he had seen 4 species of snake today 😄. We wondered if we could trump his snake sightings with ours. We showed him the photo of the one we saw and he confirmed it was a Coral Snake! He exclaimed that we had just seen one of the most deadly snakes in the world, 2nd to the black mamba found in India! I still can't believe we were casually looking at it so closely! 😰
