      Fatima, Nazare, & Obidos

      October 7, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today, we took a small group tour to Fatima and the towns of Nazare and Obidos.
Next to Jerusalem, the area of Fatima is the next most holy place for Catholics. It was a huge place with both an older cathedral and a huge modern cathedral. According to the Catholic religion, this area was where Mary appeared to three shepherd children. The story is that the Virgin Mary first appeared on May 13, 1917, to three shepherd children playing under a tree. She shared three secrets with them. The first secret was a vision of hell and the suffering of sinners, the second a prediction of the end of the Great War and the beginning of another, and the third a vision of the death of the Pope and other religious figures. She told them they needed to pray and she would return again on the 13th of each month for the next six months. The religious area of Fatima consists of a group of   religious buildings and structures with the main building, Our Lady of the Rosary.
Nazare was a cute little beachy town. My friend Grace learned how to fillet the sardines she had for lunch. She was kind enough to share her sardines with all of us. I think we were glad we didn't order them...so many tiny bones, although I guess it's OK to eat them.
Obidos was a cute little historic town. After we got through the city walls, we enjoyed ginja, This cherry liqueur is a famous local drink and is often served in a chocolate cup. It originated with 17th-century monks from the region, who combined Morello cherries and brandy, and drank it as an aperitif or after dinner drink.

      Sanctuary of Fatima, Portugal

      August 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 77 °F

Fátima is a renowned pilgrimage site in Portugal, known for the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. The town attracts millions of visitors annually, with pilgrims and tourists coming to the Sanctuary of Fátima to experience its spiritual significance. The events at Fátima hold great religious importance in Catholicism and have turned the town into a global center for devotion and reflection.

Pope Francis visited Fatima in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. His visit was marked by profound spiritual significance, drawing thousands of pilgrims and followers. During his trip, Pope Francis canonized two of the child visionaries, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, who had witnessed the apparitions.

      Fatima

Beeindruckend! Read more

      Che santuario della Madonna! 📿

      Our Lady of Fátima

      June 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

The apparition of Our Lady of Fátima figured PROMINENTLY in the library of St. Aloysius elementary school when I was a child. PROMINENTLY. So, I could not go to Portugal without visiting Fátima. The site where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three children in 1917 was first marked by a tiny chapel. Over the years, it's expanded to a massive pilgrimage site - they say they had 6.3 million pilgrims in 2019, and they get hundreds of thousands of visitors at a time on major pilgrimage days. I visited on a regular day, so it was easy to get around the massive plaza and big churches. The gift store -- which of course sells rosaries and glow-in-the-dark statues of Virgin Mary -- however, was still packed with nuns.Read more

      The Three Secrets of Fatima

      August 7, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Mary told the children the first secret in July of 1917.

The first secret described Hell as a horrible place where sinners’ souls burned. Mary said that to save these souls, acts of prayer and sacrifice were necessary.

The second secret prophesized the end of the First World War, but also the outbreak of the Second World War if sinning was to continue. Mary also called for the Consecration of Russia or else peace would not occur. Many say she also predicted the rise and fall of Communism.

The third secret was not revealed that easily. In 1943 Lucia was ill and asked by the Bishop to reveal it, but she said God had not authorized her to do so. The Bishop still ordered her to write it down. Lucia decided to write it in a sealed envelope that could only be opened in 1960. In 1960, the Vatican issued a press release stating that the third secret would remain sealed forever. For years, Christians around the world speculated on the content of the third secret and some even feared it could refer to worldwide nuclear annihilation.

However, the secret was released in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. The Vatican said the secret spoke of the 20th-century persecution of Christians, leading to the failed assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II in 1981.

The text revealed said that Mary spoke of a “Bishop clothed in white” who prays faithfully. In her vision, he was making his way towards the cross passing through the bodies of those who were martyred, like priests and other religious people. This speaks to the prosecution of Christians. He then falls to the ground dead after hearing gunfire. This message was allegedly confirmed by Sister Lucia.

      Fatima

      September 3, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Fatima

      April 5, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Grotesk.Read more
