      Porto, Portugal

      May 17, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We weren’t sure what to expect from Porto, the home of Port and the huge Francesinha sandwich. Everyone we met en route said it was like Lisbon on steroids… still unsure of what that meant we were glad to check it out for ourselves.

It was cool. Very cool. More rugged on the north of the river where we stayed, but with an amazing old town to explore and vibrant night life along the water. Lots of wandering (see list below) and even a cheeky local barber experience for Dannos!

Our Air BnB was great and the rainforest shower was definitely appreciated after the van life!

      Things to check out:
      - MUST get to O Afonso and eat a famous Francesinha sandwich… you get them all over Portugal and we finally caved! Full on but delish!
      - Stroll along the river and take in the views and live music 🎶
      - Port tasting in Porto is obvs a must. We went to Graham’s which is worth it for the amazing view
      - Wander the old town of Ribeira
      - Eat the best roast pork roll from Casa Guedes Tradicional
      - See sunset from top of Jardim do Morro or the Yeatman Hotel
      - Check out the traditional grocery store - A Pérola do Bolhão for yummy cheese & meats, the one opposite is pretty good too
      - Park das Virtudes was pretty cool

We wanted to go to Cozinha Cabral but couldn’t get in, was very busy! If we had more time, we’d probably have got a boat down the river too!

      ✌🏼

      Tag 1 : Die Ankunft

      August 14, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      Porto day 2

      September 17, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Feeling a bit sick...another sinus infection... so took as much medication that I could without falling asleep and headed off.
Attempting a self guided walking tour however with all the construction going on just got frustrated so walked over to the cultural center of the town. Walked along the waterfront and had some lunch, fish and veg and a glass of Rose. Found a couple of interesting sculptures along the way. (I'm a bit attracted to the odd stuff) A little bit of rain around not cold though. Walk back over the bridge to attempt the original walk in reverse!
      Saw....
      Praca da Ribeira
Casa do infante - birth place of ahenry the Navigator
      Igreja de sao Francisco.

The architecture is amazing as is the color and that le use on homes.
      Also my first Portuguese Tart...

      Douro Valley wine tour day

      September 18, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Boarded a bus for a trip to the Douro Valley.
Made some new friends... all Americans but I don't hold that against this bunch they were good eggs. I did however to lower the average age by around 20 years 😂.
First a 45 minute drive to a Portery.... Port tastings for morning tea... what could go wrong. Down into the valley for a traditional Portuguese lunch bread olives rice pork ribs in red wine with cabbage, lamb stew and white beans with chorizo and hock.
And if course more port and wine....
Local train station decorated with tiled pictures of wine history. I've spared you all the full set!
Nothing to 'shit selfie's with so you got wine barrels.
Then a river cruise which was beautiful surrounded by raw wine vines.
Next a boutique winery with spectacular views and more tastings. Lovely day.
Off to Coimbra by train in the morning.

    • Easy Streets in Porto

      September 19, 2021 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

On the ground here for four days now. It has been fantastic. Our Airbnb is five minutes walk to the city center. The weather is still really nice with morning temps at 60f warming up to the low 70's in the afternoon. Blue skies.
As usual we have done a ton of walking and taking in the sights. I think I could manage my way around the city now. I have the landmarks. The Douro River being the big one.
On our walks we encountered the 76 meter tall baroque Torre dos Clerigos www.torredosclerigos.pt/en the French inspired Sao Bento train station https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/São_Bento_railway…
and lots of other magnificent sights.
This city has lots to offer, the history, the sights, the restaurant's, the walkability. It is also a collage town which adds the young vibe to the seen. And lots of Port. We walked along the south side of the river yesterday crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge which was completed in 1886. It is a double-deck metal arch bridge and for some time was the longest of its kind in the world, with a 172 meter span. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Luís_I_Bridge
On the south side of the bridge along the river you will find all of the port makers. Port from Porto, go figure. Stuff is excellent on the way down but OMG the next morning is a shit show. I know this from experience back in 1998. Neither of us have had a drop of the stuff on this go around except for one shot with Jack and Ally in Lisbon.
Today is our last day in Porto, we pick up our car tomorrow and head to where ever the road will take us. Stay tuned.
