2nd Day in Porto

Today we started at the Lello & Irmao( Lello and Brothers) Bookstore, judged the most beautiful bookstore in the world. J. K. Rowling lived here for a few years and it is these stairs that inspired the moving staircases in Harry Potter. Afterward we had lunch in the park and had friendly bird visitors. The rooster really wanted to steal my sandwich. After lunch we walked along the Atlantic coast and hung out with some sea gulls at the tide pools. In the evening we took the city lights tour. We went to the wrong stop to catch the bus, realized our mistake, called a Bolt car(Uber here) and caught the bus just in time. The bridges are beautiful when all lit up at night. Finished our day with a little laundry.Read more

1st Day in Porto

Took a walking tour of the city today. The funny looking trees in the park have a story of why they look that way. 1) The park was built near a hospital and the trees sucked up all the illnesses from the sick people 2) They got a virus 3) students collect at the park and drink and the trees absorbed all the alcohol. In that same park are these statues of men laughing - The Thirteen Laughing Men. Then we went to many different churches. There are many in Porto. There’s a lot of gold leaf in these places. Finally we took a river cruise. It was a great day.Read more
Traveler This guy got exiled for 10 years when Salazar was dictator, then released. Always used to play with the kids in the park and wouldn't live in the bishop's house, but instead in a humble apartment. Very like Pope Francis.

Last day in Porto and we start walking tomorrow. After a light breakfast at our lodging, we'll head over to the sé (cathedral) where it starts, get our pilgrim passports stamped, and do a brief devotional together. Wendy picked up some beautiful rocks at the beach yesterday and we each picked one we'll carry to help us focus on what God might be doing in our hearts and lives along the way.Read more
Traveler Thinking of you on your first day of walking. Is the seashell a Camino talisman commonly carried by pilgrims? or something you found? Wishing you a beautiful and epic journey!

Traveler Pilgrims are identified with a shell along the route. Some places offer accommodation or food at discounts to pilgrims. We also have a credential that gets stamped along the way, kind of like a passport.

Douro-Tal

Wer von Portugal nur die Algarve, Lissabon und vielleicht noch Porto kennt, verpaßt viele schöne Gegenden.
Heute sind wir von Covilha nach Porto gefahren, aber nicht direkt. Wir sind durch die Sreea de Estella gefahren. Landschaftlich sehr schön. Besonders gut haben uns die Findlinge gefallen, die irgendwo in der Landschaft liegen, mal als einzelner Stein oder in Gruppen.
Weiter ging es durch das Tal des Douro. Sehr schön anzusehen, wie sich die Weinberge an den Douro schmiegen. Wir konnten uns nicht genug satt sehen.
Und das tolle: Diese Landstriche sind touristisch noch kaum erschlossen, wir hatten diese Gegenden fast für uns alleine.Read more

Porto - Altstadt

Heute stand die Altstadt von Porto auf dem Programm.
Es gibt sehr viele Kirchen, die aber alle nicht nach unserem Geschmack sind. Sie sind mit Verzierungen überladen - und dunkel. Sehenswert ist der Bahnhof SAP Bento mit seinen Wandfliesen in der Eingangshalle. Auch die Ponte Luis I ist interessant, vor allem, als wir auf der obersten Fahrbahn entlang gelaufen sind. Es bietet sich ein herrlicher Ausblick über Porto und den Douro. Sehrschön ist auch der Spaziergang entlang der Strandpromenade mit den vielen hübschen verzierten Häusern.Read more

Discovering Porto

Meeting a friend of a friend is always nice. Tried a Francesinha (first one). Walked around doing touristic things and taking lots of pictures.
This is a very beautiful city. The hills, ups and downs, are extreme but it makes it unique. I have a feeling that everything is centered in tourism alone. Or perhaps that's what I can see as a tourist.Read more

Bei Regenwetter besichtigen wir Porto und überqueren nun die alte Eisenbahnbrücke auf der obersten Etage zu Fuss. Nichts für Menschen mit Höhenangst. 😬

Unsere Fahrräder durften derweil im Einrichtungsladen neben dem Apartment das Wochenende verbringen - in der Schweiz wohl unvorstellbar. Die Portugiesen sind bisher immer wieder sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit.Read more

Nachdem wir mit dem Flixbus die Strecke SdC-Porto in 5 Stunden gefahren sind (12 Tage gelaufen) sind wir bei leichtem Nieselregen 2 km zu unserem Hotel gelaufen. Nach einem langen Mittagsschlaf sind wir zu Fuß durch die Stadt gestreift haben lecker gegessen und in einem Privat-Club das Fußball-Spiel PortoLiverpool angeschaut.Read more
