    Raffles & Hawker Market

    Raffles was our first stop to have the famous Singapore Sling.
    In the early 1900s Raffles was the place where the community gathered. Women however could not consume alcohol publicly (imagine that!!!) so teas and fruit juices were the drinks of choice. Then in 1915 a very smart young Hainanese gentlemen by the name
    Ngiam Tong Boon decided to create a drink for the ladies that looked like a fruit juice but was actually infused with gin and clear liquor. What a man!!
    Following our cocktails and the obligatory throwing of the free nut husks to th floor we headed to the nearest Hawker market via the Marina.
    We were spoiled for choice when it came to food...so much so no doubt we'll be back there tomorrow for lunch and dinner!    Читать далее

    A day in Singapore

    The day started with a stroll to Gardens by the Bay-an area covering over 101 hectares of garden. Their aim is to make Singapore a city in a garden. The Flower Dome (largest green house in the world) and Coud Forest contain a huge display of plants from around the world - particularly impressed with their succulents.
    Lunch back at Lau Pa Sat Hawker market - very busy. The place to go for all local workers. Hard to find a seat - with tables reserved with umbrellas, tissues, work passes while diners go and gather food. Tried the recommended chicken rice.
    Afternoon spent discovering Katong, in particular the Joo Chiat area, an area once filled with coconut plantations. Named after Chew Joo Chiat, it is known for its pre-war architecture, ornate facades, and ceramic tiles on housing and shops. Apparently, it is also one of the best foodie destinations (so we had to go!)
    Day ended with boat cruise down Marina Bay area.    Читать далее

    Asian Civilisation Museum

    Spent a good portion of the day in Singapore’s Asian Civilisation Museum. Showcasing Singapore's history as a port city. The museum shows how trade brought people together from all over the world and uses this to examine the history of Asia. 
    The museum covers:
    Maritime trade...exhibition displayed an amazing collection of porcelain recovered from the Tang Shipwreck
    Faith and Belief...exhibition presented different systems of faith and beliefs, their origins in Asia, and the spread across the continent.
    Materials and Design...celebrating Asian aesthetic and craftsmanship again highlighting objects that illuminate global, regional, and local exchanges.

    Dined at the world’s first Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant called Candlenut tonight. We chose the set menu 'Ah-ma-kase'.
    Ah-ma-kase is a play on the Japanese word omakase...meaning I'll leave it up to you ( full trust left in chefs hands) Ahma means “grandmother” and it refers to Chef Lee’s tasting menu of modern Peranakan dishes served family-style "using grandmas recipes" according to our waiter... he wrnt on to say ah-ma-kase translates to Grandma's love. With that sentiment in mind and a glass of Riesling in hand our dinner began.
    Entrees were bite sized (I tried to make them last and had two bites).
    Kueh Pie Tee was a great start...lobster, tumeric curry with candlenut (a nut not unlike macadamia). Deep fried carrot cake (no carrot, actually white radish) with a poisonous nut buah kelauk (cooked for several days and washed before able to use). The 3rd entree, my favourite Kueh Bakar Berlauk - wagyu beef rendang...in a little pancake, need I say more!!! The chicken stay was the final entree...with the best peanut sauce I have ever had.
    Mains: Started with a soup; Soto Basko. The broth was exquisite, apparently cooked for over 4 hours. Pork meatball, tumeric fish, and noodles just elevated the broth to new heights. What followed was corn salad and four curry like dishes. Yeye's Curry with Crab, Babi Assam (slow cooked pork cheek). Next came my favourite barramundi cooked in nyonah rempah, okra, starfruit, tomatoes and laksa leaf. An absolute standout! A king prawn with Nana's lemak broth, pineapple and laksa leaf ended mains.
    Dessert consiated of 3 palate cleansing delights; coconut sorbet, tapioca cake with grated coconut and my favourite dessert Pulut Inti, a fragrant glutinous rice cake with Gulargambone melaka which had a golden syrup flavour. Dessert was paired beautifully with a sparkling saki which seemed made to be had with the Ubu Kelapa (coconut sorbet dish).
    Definitely deserving of its michelin star!    Читать далее

    Rome Day 1

    After a "tough" 😇 flight arrived fresh faced in Rome. Train out to the Monti area where we are staying and short walk to our accomodation. No sign of our host and a hail storm welcomed us to Rome.
    By the time Gabriella rocked up and let us into our apartment and gave us the low down it was time for lunch.
    Off to a local restorante 'Brigantino' for pizza 🍕 .
    After sustenance we visited Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore - 5th Century - one of Rome's for patriarchal basilicas. Originally designed by Michaelangelo although the ceiling is all that remains from his plans.
    Walking the streets rain sent us into a wine bar for a couple of hours before we went to funky pasta bar 'Ce Stamo a Pensà' for dinner.    Читать далее

    Rome Day 2

    Day 2 began with a walk around the surrounds to watch Rome come to life and to find a coffee while Jeremy slept. Espresso had... parted with €1 and headed back to accommodation. Took a right, instead of left or a left instead of a right and found myself lost. Or as I like to say on a different path than intended. Little while later back and ready to explore.
    Trevi Fountain 1st stop. Rome's largest, 28th century, Nicola Salvi designed fountain. Threw the obligatory coin in the fountain to ensure our return one day.
    After luckily spotting a short, fast moving, newly opened line, we entered the Pantheon; a striking 2000 year old temple (now a church). The dome is very impressive and has inspired architects and engineers for centuries.
    After lunch, the Colosseum in all its grandeur beckoned. It's amazing how something built in AD 69-79, is still standing. You truly get a sense of its violent history and can well imagine being in the crowd watching gladiators battle it out
    Palatino & Roman Forum adjacent to the Colleseum is not be missed. So much history, it is overwhelming. You are talking... Romulus and Remus, founding of Rome in 753bc, Augustus, Nero, Julius Caesar....Mind blown! Poppies growing in the grassy areas helped remind us Liberation Day here and ANZAC day at home.
    Il Vittoriano huge marble monument built in 1885 has fantastic views over the city. It also holds the Tomb of the unknown soldier again quite fitting that we are here today.
    Pasta for breakfast lunch and dinner lucky we walked all day over 20km!!    Читать далее

    Rome Day 3

    Early morning walk to Vatican City this morning did not reap its reward. Thousand others had the same idea. Against my better judgement, we did not book tickets. Decision quickly made that we were not going to spend day queuing for Sistine Chapel. If either of us had not been before, it would have been different.
    Instead, we headed to the nearby Castel Sant'Angelo. It originally was a mausoleum for the emperor Hadrian. It has passageway to the Vatican and has provided sanctuary to pope's in times of danger.
    Lunch was at a great wine bar where I 2, never tried before wine vareities; a friulano and a zibibbo were tried. Zibibbo, according to gentleman next to us, exclusive to Sicily.
    Srumbled upon an Escher exhibition, see other post.
    Next a trek to the Spanish steps, a climb up to the top, stepping over people plonked on various steps on the way.
    A well-deserved Spritz (after all that walking and absorbing of history) was next on the agenda.
    Dinner has to mentioned as it was so good!. Recommended by our bnb host, Trattoria Monti was a find! Entree shared was an eggplant roll filled with ricotta.
    First course I enjoyed, Tortollo ( a huge ravioli) filled with an egg, ricotta and covered in sage butter. Jeremy enjoyed a delicious broccoli, pasta, fish soup.
    Secondi was suckling pig with every bit of skin crispy with roast potatoes. Jeremy had lamb brains with fried artichoke (classic Roman dish).
    Even though both full, dessert was ordered. Tiramusu and amaretto ice-cream. I quickly remembered that amaretto reminds me of childhood pink glue so swapped with Jeremy and loved the tiramasu.    Читать далее

    Rome Day 3 Escher

    What a great find! We stumbled across this Escher exhibition. I'm a big fan, especially of his tessellating art. It was interesting to see his expanse of work and see how much it has been used by bands, TV shows, movies 🎬 etc. From Pearl Jam concert flyers to the Simpson's. His work was influenced by nature and travelling Spain and Italy.
    There were interactive parts to the exhibition where one could place themselves in his art - had to give that go. In the perspective shot, I'm meant to look tall... I still think I look short, though!    Читать далее

    Rome Day 4

    Slow moving day today. Museo Nazionale Romano was where we settled for a few hours today. When Rome became the capital city in 1870 the need to establish a museum where the past could be displayed and explored was decided. The Baths of Diocletian was the chosen site. It houses a large collection of antiquities from various collections and sites including a collection of Written Communication in the Roman World which was fascinating.

    Well, our Rome michelin experience was exceptional. Enoteca La Torre is awarded two Michelin stars for 2024 and is well deserving. The restaurant is within the walls of Villa Laetitia. The Villa is the residence of Anna Fendi Venturini and is architecturally a mix of Renaissance and Baroque. The dining hall has beautiful arched windows, towering over the room.
    Amuse-bouche: 3 delightful bites. The bee sitting on lattice was delicious. The lattice was made from polenta, while the bee was a blue cheese. That small bee was a flavour bomb.
    Eight courses followed, generally delivered by two waiters, so receiving them at precisely the same time. One waiter remained and then explained the dish and on a number of courses, finishing the dish off with a spritz of a scent.
    The risotto with lemons, razor claims, asparagus was exceptional so too a little side dish which was a duck 'sausage roll'.

    Holy Door

    Rome Day 5

    Our final day in Rome...
    We visited the Scala Santa...Holy Staircase. It is thought to be the same flight of stairs which Jesus ascended the house of Pontius Pilate. Pilgrims and believers climb the staircase on their knees.
    Then we headedcacross the road to San Giovanni in Laterano, the cathedral of Rome, steeped in history. The central aisle is flanked by colossal statues of the twelve apostles.
    Lunch was amazing! A restaurant featured in Stanley Tucci's Rome.
    Dinner at a great little pizza bar ( gluten free ) for any gluten intolerant peeps out there!

    San Sebastion Sun

    The morning started with coffee and breakfast on the balcony. Followed by a beach walk and stroll though the streets. Stop off at the San Sebastian cathedral with beautiful stain glass windows. A relax in the beautiful sum with a good book was an afternoon well spent.

    Rainy day in San Sebastian

    Rain fell steadily for most of the morning. Once it had eased off, we headed out to climb Mount Urgull. It's more like a hill with an elevation of only 123 metres...it stands on the edge of the Old Town. We didn't make it far before the rain started again, so the decision was quickly made to stop off for a drink and pintxos in order to stay dry.
    In between two different bars popped into one of the many churches, the Church of St Mary. This church has many altars and, of course, a huge organ. More pintxos followed before we recommenced our journey up Urgull Hill.
    The hill became a defence point during the 12th century, and atop is, barracks, warehouses, a Chapel, cannons etc. In the 1800s, the hill played a significant role in military operations.
    A 12 metre-high sculpture of Jesus Christ was added in 1950... watching over San Sebastián. There are spectacular views over Kontxa Bay and Zurriola Beach with a clear view of the steepled cathedral we visited yesterday.    Читать далее

    Weather has been inconsistent, to say the least..sunny and warm, cold and rainy, muggy, windy...I definitely didn't pack well. I figure I keep wearing my summer clothes and the weather will start to match!! It was beautiful sitting out on the balcony last night I have to say..23° still at 930pm.
    Last few days have been very relaxing... out for lunch, out for dinner, strolling the streets, beach wslks, touch of shopping... popped into yet another church, St Vincents. We also visited a town about 15km out of San Sebastian and visited a cider museum, then had lunch at a local cider house. You have to catch your cider, streaming from the barrels - quite the experience. When it is really busy, if someone calls 'txotx' you get up and line up in front of barrel and one after the other, you "catch" the cider in your glass... hand eye coordination is imperative! Lunch was a feast...omelette, followed by cod, followed by a huge steak and of course a bread stick!
    Lazy Sunday My walk on beach this morning displayed 20 odd games of what looked like touch footy or the like played on the sand by school aged children and youth... Packed!    Читать далее

    Hanging out in San Sebastián

    Relaxing few days in and around San Sebastián.
    Dinner out on Monday night...such great value, 3 courses plus wine for €27.50. And when I say wine, ...was expecting a glass, but the whole bottle was plonked on the table. One for Jeremy and one for me. Needless to say, they were not finished 😅
    Friend Liz arrived in San Sebastián on Tuesday and walked to Antigua, past the far end of La Concha Bay. Caught a funicular up, Monte Igueldo. Fantastic views over San Sebastián. Tuesday night met Liz out for, you guessed it beer and pintxos.
    Wednesday went for a walk with Liz back up Mont Urgull to the ever-present Jesus statue. Chef Jeremy has been in the kitchen trying his hand at basque cooking.
    More pinxtos and beers in the evening, with Liz and Phil, following his safe arrival in Spain.
    Yet another book read...so another trip to book shop is needed.

    After 10 nights of basque cuisine, beer, cider, and pinxtos, it was time for a fine dining experience. And tonight, it was Amelia, located within Villa Favorita near La Concha Bay.
    Chef, Paulo received his 2nd Michelin star in 2021. He was present throughout the night, keeping a close eye, adding finishing touches, and chatting to guests.
    We were seated at the long bench over looking the kitchen. It was great watching the staff focussed on their individual jobs and move somewhat silently around the kitchen.
    The dishes combine the essence of Basque culinary tradition with subtle Italian and Asian influences.
    The Amuse-bouche were delightful. Flavourful mouth bursts, especially the tuna with wasabi and caviar.
    The pigeon was my favourite dish from the mains with the king crab, with barnacles and Iberian pork coming in close behind. The pigeon meat was so tender, and the jus was silky rich.
    Was not a fan of 'The Cheese'. I would prefer the traditional cheese board. The other dessert was a confusing mix of flavours. I do not think caviar, banana, and rum go together at all!! Fortunately, the little petit fours were delicious!
    Wine matching was great, and I feel very lucky to have tried a d'Yquem and a 1959 Tempranillo from Rioja.
    Amelia and chef Paulo Airaudo definitely a worthy recipient of 2 Michelin Stars.    Читать далее

    Have been hanging out for a swim since I arrived. Today, the sun was out, and it was reasonably warm, so it had to be done. The beach was packed, not many people in the water.     San Sebastian to Pasaia

    Jeremy and I went for a 22km hike today, from San Senastian to Pasaia. The walk starts at the end of Zurriola Beach and heads over Ulia Mount, hugging the coast most of the way. Awesome views were found around each bend. The morning sun versus the afternoon sun cast different lights on the cliffs, so I stopped in awe on the return trip as much as I did on the way there. The walk covers some of the way of St James, so I felt a connection to Camino walkers. There was even the guiding yellow arrows along the way.
    On arrival in Pasaia, we chanced upon some boating/port festival...stores, demonstrations, music, and puppets. The huge puppets operated by 1, or in some cases, 2 people would have given me nightmares as a child. Had a great festival feel. If the 11km walk back and fancy dinner was not in front of us, we would have stayed and joined in on the street beers that were on offer.    Читать далее

    WOW! WOW! WOW! A Wow for each of Akelaŕe's 3 Michelin stars it's held since 2007. I could continue with the wows for each and every dish, the setting, the service... the whole experience.

    Getting to Akelaŕe located on the slopes of Mount Igeldo, San Sebastián nearly didn't happen... pouring with rain, no Uber on the radar, no taxi in sight, I was thinking we would not make it. Good fortune was on our side, and we chanced upon an available taxi. We arrived early, giving ourselves time for a predinner drink and a chance for me to dry my new silk blouse, drenched by the rain, under the hand dryer. A glass of Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) started our experience at Akelaŕe.

    A good conductor is of no use without virtuosos of each instrument... believes Subijana. This was evident through the food and the exemplary service.

    Amuse-bouche was delightful and not quite what was expected. The 'potato' was actually a delightful mouthful of Russian salad. The 'macaron', which seemed out of place as an amuse-bouche, was actually savoury and had the flavour of a gilda (a famous pitxos served in all the bars)

    For entreé it was hard to go past one called homage to the anchovy, and Jeremy was not disappointed. I opted for a steamed red prawn with txakoli flavours. Jeremy won that round.
    The codfish shaped in a beautiful rose just melted in the mouth, and the accompanying beetroot flavours was a great pairing.
    Following the codfish was the Foie Gras with salt and pepper. They tricked us again, and while I would have been more than happy with the pile of salt, the salt was actually sugar, and the pepper was fried puffed rice. Next level deliciousness!
    Iberian pork belly and cabbage with a crunchy crackling twirl was next to hit the palate. The palate was dancing!
    The dish of Barnacles and Pig's trotters and mussels with seaweed was well named 'a bite of land and sea'.
    With the sea element happily lingering from the previous dish, the grilled Turbut followed nicely.
    Baresarian suckling lamb was next for me, and pork with 3 different types of garlic was Jeremy's choice. The lamb was exquisite, and the silky, rich jus left me wanting more. Drinking a jug of it would not be out of the question for me.
    Accompanying our dinner, we had a lovely 1997 Rioja red.
    Two desserts and petit-fours rounded off a spectacular dinner. The chocolate dessert was nothing to write home about. However, the second one, which I forgot to take a pic of, was much better, as evident by empty plate. The apple iced wine we had was the best part of dessert.    Читать далее

    We did a fantastic cooking class today with Lander, a chef with 25 years of experience from https://www.amaurcook.com/
    The class conducted in Lander's apartment with only 6 of us was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
    We made some of the all time most popular pintxos from San Sebastion.

    We prepared anchovies in order to create Antxoa Jardinera - removing the scales and bones and leaving them in a brine. Chopped the vegetables and placed in a vinaigrette to atop the anchovy. A version of this is sold in every pinxtos bar.

    Tarta de Queso or the 'famous' cheese cake was made next using 'La Viña's' recipe. 'La Viña' est in 1959 is a local bar that churns through 100s of these cakes every day! Tarta La Queso is considered the one and only pinxtos dessert.

    We also put together 'gildas' - on a small skewer, an olive, followed by one end of the anchovy, 3 piparrak, the other end of the anchovy and finished with another olive. Topped off with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Designed by a customer in 1940s to be eaten in one mouthful. It was named after Rita Haywoths character in a 1946 film -"green, salty and a little bit spicy".

    The highlight dish for me was the Tortilla de Patata (potato omlette). Confit potatoes, caramelised white onion and eggs. The best Tortilla I've had!

    Hojaldre de Txistorrra or chorizo in puffed pastry are a very easy, quick to prepare mouthful of yum!

    RIsotto de Idiazábal was another highlight and similar to the risotto we had in town earlier in our trip. Using puntalette, similar to orzo and a beautiful, smoky cheese.

    Accompanying our dishes we drank a local boutique beer, sagardoa, txakoli.
