    Oranienburg ist alles in allem durchschnittlich...nett aber nichts aussergewöhnliches. Ich habe mir vorallem die Namensgeberin der Stadt, die Oranienburg, angeschaut. Bewusst aussen vor gelassen habe ich die Gedenkstätte des KZ Sachsenhausen, das erste KZ der Nationalsozialisten, und der einzige Grund, weshalb die meisten Touristen überhaupt aus Berlin in dieses Städtchen kommen. Ich habe genug vom beinahe schon an "Dark Tourism" erinnernden Abklappern der Gedenkstätten, welche es in Deutschland wie Sand am Meer gibt.

    Oranienburg is all in all average...nice but nothing extraordinary. I mainly visited the town's namesake, the Oranienburg. I deliberately left out the Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial, the first Nazi concentration camp and the only reason why most tourists come to this little town from Berlin. I've had enough of the almost "dark tourism" style of visiting memorials, which are a dime a dozen in Germany.    もっと詳しく

    Das ist nun also Lübeck. Hauptstadt der Hanse, eines Städtebundes, der weder ein Gründungs- noch Auflösungsdatum kennt, und die Stadt doch sagenhaft reich gemacht hat. Im Nebel der Geschichte im 12. Jahrhundert entstanden, und in eben jenen im 17. Jahrhundert wieder verschwunden. Bis heute zeugt eine prächtige Altstadt von der vergangenen Grösse. Diese hat der Stadt sogar den UNESCO - Weltkulturerbe - Titel eingebracht. Auf den berühmten Weihnachtsmarkt muss ich leider verzichten, denn traditionell öffnen dieser, wie in vielen Orten Deutschlands, erst nach dem "Totensonntag", eine Woche vor dem 1. Advent. Aber da kann einem das leckere, berühmten Lübecker Marzipan bestimmt darüber hinweg trösten.

    So this is Lübeck. The capital of the Hanseatic League, a union of cities that knows neither the date of its foundation nor the date of its dissolution, and yet has made the city fabulously rich. It emerged in the mists of history in the 12th century and disappeared again in the 17th century. To this day, a splendid old town bears witness to its past greatness. This has even earned the city the UNESCO World Heritage title. Unfortunately, I have to miss out on the famous Christmas market, because traditionally, as in many places in Germany, it only opens after "Totensonntag", a week before the first Advent.     Travemünde ist eigentlich kein eigenes Städtchen, sondern der vorgelagerte Hafen Lübecks an der Ostsee. Als Tourist bin ich jedoch ganz klar zur falschen Jahreszeit da, viele Geschäfte sind geschlossen und der Strand ist, wenig überraschend, verwaist. Trotzdem schlendern noch einige Touristen durch die Strassen, als ich kurz vor der Abenddämmerung (um 15:45!) ankomme. Die Promenade könnte ähnlich wohl auch irgendwo am Mittelmeer anzutreffen sein. Generell hat Travemünde das wohl das mediterranste Flair, welches ich je in einer Stadt mit Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt empfunden habe. Vielleicht ist es aber auch nur die warme Briese des Glühweins in meiner Hand, die mich täuscht...

    Travemünde is not actually a town in its own right, but the harbour of Lübeck on the Baltic Sea. As a tourist, however, I'm clearly here at the wrong time of year, many shops are closed and the beach is, unsurprisingly, deserted. Nevertheless, a few tourists are still strolling through the streets when I arrive shortly before dusk (at 15:45!). The promenade could probably be found somewhere similar on the Mediterranean. In general, Travemünde probably has the most Mediterranean flair I have ever experienced in a town with temperatures around freezing point. But maybe it's just the warm breeze from the mulled wine in my hand that's deceiving me...    もっと詳しく

    Es ist ein weiterer kurzer, kalter und windiger Wintertag in Norddeutschland. Die Kulisse der rauhen Ostsee, habe ich nun jedoch gegen die weiten Ebenen des Norddeutschen Tieflandes eingetauscht. Eingebettet in eine weitläufige Seenlandschaft, wurde Schwerin, die Hauptstadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns, als erster Stadt in der Region, durch Heinrich den Löwen, das Stadtrecht verliehen.
    Ihr kennt Heinrich den Löwen, wie ich, auch nicht? Das ist etwas ungünstig, schliesslich beginnt die Stadttour mit dem Satz: "Heinrich den Löwen kennt ihr ja". Tatsächlich handelt es sich bei ihm um einen bedeutenden Herzog des 12. Jahrhundert aus dem Haus der Welfen. Heinrich der Löwe nimmt in Schwerin eine Art "Vater-der-Stadt" - Figur ein. Seine geschichtliche Rolle variiert dabei je nach Sichtweise von "Held und Gründer der Stadt", über "Lehnsherr der dort zuvor wohnhaften Slawen", bis zum "Eroberer des Gebiets, der die Slawen vertrieben hat". Die Wahrheit liegt wohl irgendwo dazwischen. Was hingegen heute noch greifbar ist, ist die städtebauliche Entwicklung der Stadt Schwerin. Die noch weitestgehend erhaltene, schöne Altstadt und das prunkvolle Schloss, sollen kommendes Jahr, UNESCO - Weltkulturerbe werden. Wohlverdient, denke ich!

    It's another short, cold and windy winter's day in northern Germany. However, I have now swapped the backdrop of the rough Baltic Sea for the vast plains of the North German lowlands. Embedded in a vast lake landscape, Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was the first city in the region to be granted city rights by Henry the Lion.
    Like me, you don't know Henry the Lion? That's a bit unfourtunate, as the city tour begins with the sentence: "You of course know Henry the Lion". In fact, he was an important duke of the 12th century from the House of Welfs. Henry the Lion is a kind of "father of the city" figure in Schwerin. Depending on the point of view, his historical role varies from "hero and founder of the city", to "feudal lord of the Slavs who previously lived there", to "conqueror of the region who drove out the Slavs". The truth probably lies somewhere in between. What is still tangible today, however, is the urban development of the city of Schwerin. The still largely preserved, beautiful old town and the magnificent castle are to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site next year. Well deserved, I think!    もっと詳しく

    Um 03:30 aufstehen, um bereits um acht Uhr in Quedlinburg anzukommen...wer hatte denn diese durchgeknallte Idee? Ach ja - das war ja ich. Die Stadt ist menschenleer, erste Weihnachtsmarkts-Standbesitzer öffen ihre Geschäfte, und meine dunklen Augenringe werden nur durch die Kerzen des Weihnachtsmarktes in ein sanftes Licht getaucht.
    Während die Stadt langsam erwacht, besuche ich schon erste Sehenswürdigkeiten, die vielen Fachwerkhäuser haben es mir angetan. Der frühe Start erweist sich als hervorragende Idee. Spätestens Anfang Nachmittag, wird die Stadt durch Touristenströme überrannt. Ein Vorwärtskommen ist in der Innenstadt kaum mehr möglich, durch die Stadt zu gehen fühlt sich an, wie ein Besuch in Venedig. Nicht die Temperatur, oder die Lagunen, sondern die schieren Menschenmassen. Was mit dem UNESCO-Welterbe und berühmtem Weihnachtsmarkt begann, scheint inzwischen unter dem Erfolg, und dem damit einsetzenden Massentourismus, zu leiden. Alles in allem: Quedlinburg ist definitiv ein must-see - aber vielleicht ausserhalb der Hauptsaison.

    Getting up at 03:30 to arrive in Quedlinburg at eight o'clock...who had this crazy idea? Oh yes - that was me. The town is deserted, the first Christmas market stallholders are opening their shops and my dark circles under my eyes are only softly illuminated by the candles of the Christmas market.
    As the city slowly awakens, I visit the first sights and I'm enamoured by the many half-timbered houses. Starting early proves to be an excellent idea. By early afternoon at the latest, the city is overrun by streams of tourists. Moving forward in the city centre is hardly possible, walking through the city feels like a visit to Venice. Not the temperature, or the lagoons, but the sheer masses of people. What started out as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous Christmas market now seems to be suffering from its success and the mass tourism that comes with it. All in all: Quedlinburg is definitely a must-see - but perhaps outside the main season.    もっと詳しく

    Wernigerode ist vorallem für sein Schloss und die Dampflokomotivenfahrten auf den Brocken bekannt. Und eines davon war mir dann auch vergönnt - allerdings war es nicht die Fahrt auf den Brocken.
    Ich hatte in einer Nachbargemeinde von Wernigerode übernachtet, und meine Tagesplanung sollten mit einer zehnminütige Zugfahrt zum Startpunkt der Brockenbahn, Fahrt aufnehmen. In weiser Voraussicht und Bewusstsein, dass es sich dabei um die DB handelt, hatte ich mich für einen Zug entschieden, welcher mir eine Stunde Reservezeit gelassen hätte. Diese Weichenstellung sollte verhindern, dass ich auf dem Abstellgleis landen würde. Leider löste sich diese Reserve mit der Stornierung des Zuges in Luft auf. Selbiges passierte auch mit der Verbindung eine Stunde später. Das Ende vom Lied war, dass ich so stark ausgebremst wurde, dass ich mit mehr als zwei Stunden Verspätung in Wernigerode ankam. Deshalb kam mein Ticket zum Brocken schlussendlich doch nicht zum Zug. Aus Bedenken, das Harzgebirge irgendwann aufgrund des Schneefalls nichtmehr verlassen zu können, sprang ich auf den Zug von Menschen auf, die die nächste Bahn in Richtung Berlin erwischen wollten. Durch die vielen Ausfälle, konnte ich die Rückreise nach Berlin in vollen Zügen geniessen. Aber das wirft einem ja nicht so schnell aus der Bahn...

    Wernigerode is best known for its castle and the steam locomotive rides up the Brocken. And one of them was granted to me - but it wasn't the trip up the Brocken.
    I had spent the night in a neighbouring village to Wernigerode, and my plans for the day were to include a ten-minute train ride to the starting point of the Brockenbahn. With wise foresight and knowing that it was DB, I had decided in favour of a train that would have left me an hour's reserve time. Unfortunately, this reserve vanished into thin air when the train was cancelled. The same thing happened with the connection an hour later. The end of the story was that I arrived in Wernigerode more than two hours late. As a result, my ticket to the Brocken didn't materialise in the end. Worried that I wouldn't be able to leave the Harz Mountains at some point due to the snowfall, I jumped on the train of people who wanted to catch the next train to Berlin. Due to the many cancellations, I was able to enjoy the return journey to Berlin to the full. But that doesn't throw you off track so quickly...    もっと詳しく

    Das halbe Jahr hier in Berlin ist wie im Flug vergangen. Die letzten Tage sind von vielen letzten Malen geprägt. Ein letztes Mal mit dem Team essen gehen, einen letzten Bericht fertig schreiben, ein letztes Mal die Aussicht aus dem Büro, auf das Paul-Löbe-Haus und den Fernsehturm geniessen, einen letzten Schwatz mit den Menschen, die ich hier kennengelernt habe. Mit Nathan, meinem Mitpraktikanten, gehe ich am letzten Abend noch einen letzten Glühwein trinken. Doch was ist es letztlich, das die Wehmut auslöst? Die Stadt? Die Arbeit? Die Menschen? Wohl eine Mischung aus alle dem. Eine wichtige Eigenschaft einer Botschaft ist die beschränkte Zeit, in der verschiedene Menschen an dem einen Ort zusammengewürfelt werden. Diese zufällige Konstellation erzeugt eine einzigartige, sich immer ändernde Erfahrung. Es ist also nicht bloss ich der geht, sondern ein sich laufend wandelnder Zyklus von Menschen, die sich diese Erfahrung zu eigen machen. Und das ist auch gut so!

    Half a year here in Berlin has flown by. The last few days are characterised by many last times. One last meal with the team, finishing one last report, one last time enjoying the view from the office over the Paul Löbe House and the TV tower, one last chat with the people I've got to know here. I go for a last mulled wine with Nathan, my fellow intern, on my last evening. But what is it that ultimately triggers the melancholy? The city? The work? The people? Probably a mixture of all of these. An important characteristic of an embassy is the limited time in which different people are thrown together in one place. This random constellation creates a unique, ever-changing experience. So it's not just me going, but a constantly changing cycle of people who make this experience their own.     Es ist wohl kein Zufall, dass sich Odyssee auf DB reimt. Denn eine solche, war auch die Heimfahrt mit der Deutschen Bahn wieder. Aber naja, es waren ja heute nicht alle meine Zuge zu spät. Es sind auch welche ausgefallen. In dem Sinne, Frohe Weihnachten!
