    Unsere erste Destination ist Singapur. Wir nehmen an einer Walking - Tour teil, die offiziell zwei Stunden dauert, jedoch faktisch auf vier Stunden verlängert wird. Dafür ist es sehr lehrreich und unterhaltsam. So fällt bei allen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Satz des Guides: "Another group picture here", weshalb wir nun eine Reihe von Bildern von uns, mit wildfremden Menschen der Tour haben.
    Ach ja, und wir wissen nun, welche, für europäische Vorstellungen vergleichsweise kleine Vergehen, mit Stockschlägen, und welche mit der Todesstrafe geandet werden. In ähnlicher Manier sind auch überall Plakate zu finden, die ein Vergehen, und die zu erwartende Strafe, bekannt geben.
    Am Freitag, unserem letzten Abend in der Stadt, treffen wir dann Kollegen von Raphael, die er in seinem Austauschsemester kennengelernt hat. Die beiden zeigen uns die traditionelle singapurische Küche. Anschliessend soll es weiter in eine Weinbar gehen. Diese scheint zuerst voll zu sein, doch Isaac redet dem Besitzer etwas gut zu (auf Französisch natürlich), und dieser setzt dann tatsächlich alle Hebel in Bewegung, dass wir doch noch einen Platz ergattern. Zurück im Hostel, fällt Isaac auf, dass ihm eine Schraube bei einem der Brillen-Nasenpads fehlt. Ein prompter und schneller Service beim lokalen Optiker bewahrt Isaac davor, für den Rest der Reise als blindes Huhn "rumzuhühnern".

    Our first destination is Singapore. We take part in a walking tour, which officially lasts two hours, but is actually extended to four hours. But it is very informative and entertaining. The guide tells us at all the sights: "Another group picture here", which is why we now have a series of pictures of ourselves with complete strangers on the tour.
    Oh yes, and we now know which offences, comparatively minor by European standards, are punishable by caning and which by the death penalty. Similarly, there are posters everywhere announcing an offence and the punishment to be expected.
    On Friday, our last evening in the city, we meet Raphael's colleagues whom he met during his exchange semester. The two of them show us traditional Singaporean cuisine. Afterwards, we head to a wine bar. It seems to be full at first, but Isaac gives the owner a good talking to (in French, of course) and he actually pulls out all the stops to get us a seat after all. Back at the hostel, Isaac realises that a screw is missing from one of the nose pads on his glasses. A prompt and quick service at the local optician saves Isaac from having to "chicken around" blind for the rest of the trip.    もっと詳しく

    Seid ihr vertraut mit dem Passierschein A38? Dieser ist bekannt aus dem Film "Asterix erobert Rom". In dieser Szene bekommen Asterix und Obelix die Aufgabe ein Dokument in einem Irrenhaus zu erhalten, was sich allerdings aufgrund der Bürokratie des Irrenhauses als unmöglich erweist. Von einem Schalter werden sie zum nächsten geschickt, was sie langsam in den Wahnsinn treibt. So ähnlich erging es auch uns. Von unserem Ankunftsbahnhof in Malaysia fragten wir uns durch, bis sich jemand erbarmte, uns zu erklären, dass wir erst quer durch die Stadt zum Fernbus-Bahnhof müssen. Dort angekommen gestaltete sich die Suche des Ticketschalters schwierig. Als wir ihn schliesslich doch fanden, war eine riesige Schlange davor. Kurzerhand beschlossen wir, online zu buchen. Damit wollten wir dann zum Abfahrts-Gate gehen. Der Herr vor Ort teilte uns allerdings mit, wir müssten das Ticket am Schalter 9 ausdrucken lassen. Am Schalter 9 verwies man uns zum Schalter 12. Dort konnte man uns dann das Ticket drucken, und uns wurde gesagt, wir sollen uns zum Abfahrtsgate D14 begeben. Von dort gings weiter zu Gate A10, bis der Bus dann schliesslich beim Gate B12 abfuhr.
    Während Raphael dabei nach dem Motto "viel hilft viel" schlicht jeden Mitarbeitenden anquatschte, um an die richtigen Infos zu kommen, war Isaac davon überzeugt, dass der Bus uns schon nicht stehenlassen würde. Isaacs Lieblingssatz am Bahnhof: "Vertraue auf das System".

    Are you familiar with the A38 pass? This is known from the film "Asterix Conquers Rome". In this scene, Asterix and Obelix are given the task of obtaining a document in an asylum, but this proves to be impossible due to the bureaucracy of the asylum. They are sent from one desk to the next, which slowly drives them mad. It was the same for us. From our arrival station in Malaysia, we asked our way through until someone took pity on us and explained that we first had to cross the city to the long-distance bus station. Once there, it was difficult to find the ticket counter. When we finally arrived there, there was a huge queue in front of it. Without further ado, we decided to book online. We then wanted to go to the departure gate. However, the man on site told us that we would have to have the ticket printed out at counter 9. At counter 9, we were directed to counter 12, where we were able to print the ticket and were told to go to departure gate D14. From there we continued to gate A10 until the bus finally departed at gate B12.
    While Raphael simply chatted to every member of staff to get the right information according to the motto "a lot helps a lot", Isaac was convinced that the bus wouldn't leave us standing. Isaac's favourite phrase at the station: "Trust the system".    もっと詳しく

    Bei der Ankunft in Melaka, fällt uns besonders der grosse Kontrast zu Singapore auf. Am Abend herrscht eine gemütliche Stimmung, und wir geniessen ein kühles Bier in einer der kleinen Bars, direkt am Fluss. Das einzige, was die Ruhe stört, sind die bunt blinkenden Tuktuks, die unentwegt in ohrenbetäubender Lautstärke irgendwelche Songs abspielen.
    Das muss uns so nachhaltig verwirrt haben, sonst gibt es wohl keine Erklärung für den folgenden Morgen: Wir wollten einen Aussichtspunkt auf einem Hochhaus besuchen. Nach einem kleinen Durcheinander kamen wir dann auch auf den Dach an - nur um dann "unser Hochhaus" vor uns zu sehen. Wir standen auf dem falschen Gebäude. So gings also wieder runter, und auf den anderen Turm rauf. Dies verlangte uns viel Geduld ab - der Lift hielt in beinahe jedem der 43 Stockwerke. Dafür wurden wir mit einer tollen Aussicht über die Stadt belohnt!

    On arrival in Melaka, we are particularly struck by the huge contrast to Singapore. In the evening, the atmosphere is cosy and we enjoy a cold beer in one of the small bars right by the river. The only thing that disturbs the peace and quiet are the colourful flashing tuktuks that constantly play songs at a deafening volume.
    This must have left us very confused, otherwise there is probably no explanation for the following morning: we wanted to visit a viewpoint on a tower block. After a bit of confusion, we arrived at the roof - only to see "our skyscraper" in front of us. We were standing on the wrong building. So we went back down and up the other tower. This demanded a lot of patience from us - the lift stopped at almost every one of the 43 floors. But we were rewarded with a fantastic view over the city!    もっと詳しく

    Kuala Lumpur ist einiges grösser als Melaka, doch dank unserer bisherigen Erfahrung sollte das kein Problem sein...oder so dachten wir. Wir haben jedoch schnell bemerken müssen, dass man sich nicht mehr als eine Sehenswürdigkeit pro Tag vornehmen sollte. Die Stadt entschleunigt einem gekonnt durch Staus und ausfallende Züge. Wenn man es aber doch mal hinschafft, so lohnt es sich! Die Batu Caves beeindrucken uns mit ihrer bunten Schönheit und der goldenen Statue von Murugan, dem Gott des Krieges im Hinduismus. Im Kontrast zu den alten Tempeln steht Kuala Lumpurs wohl bekanntestes Bauwerk, die Petronas Twin Towers. Hier besuchen wir auch eine tolle Walking-Tour, deren Guide für unsere Reise so hilfreich ist, dass wir ihn gerne früher getroffen hätten.

    Kuala Lumpur is a lot bigger than Melaka, but thanks to our previous experience this shouldn't be a problem...or so we thought. However, we soon realised that you shouldn't do more than one sight per day. The city skilfully slows you down with traffic jams and cancelled trains. But if you do make it there, it's worth it! The Batu Caves impress us with their colourful beauty and the golden statue of Murugan, the god of war in Hinduism. In contrast to the ancient temples is Kuala Lumpur's most famous building, the Petronas Twin Towers. Here we also visit an amazing walking tour, whose guide is so helpful for our trip that we wish we had met him earlier.    もっと詳しく

    Wieso heisst George Town eigentlich so? Die Briten hatten die Stadt nach King George III benannt, doch im Gegensatz zu anderen Orten, behielt die Stadt den Namen auch nach der Unabhängigkeit Malaysias. Dies liegt daran, dass die Einheimischen den Namen als "gut fürs Business" betrachteten. Dies scheint auch gewirkt zu haben, zumindest scheint die Gegend wohlhabener zu sein, als der Süden des Landes.
    Unsere Ankunft in George Town hätte allerdings etwas entspannter verlaufen können. Wir suchten in Kulala Lumpur über zwei Stunden nach der richtigen Busstation, klapperten dabei drei verschiedene ab, nur um dann zu merken, dass der Bus ohnehin an der zweiten und dritten Station gehalten hätte. Dadurch kamen wir erst nach Mitternacht im Hostel an. Es wurde allerdings vorerst nicht besser. Ein anderer Hostelgast informiert uns, in ihrem Zimmer, nebenan, gebe es Bettwanzen. Nach längerer Suche und etwas Paranoia, erklären wir die Betten als Wanzenfrei, was sich zum Glück als korrekt entpuppt.
    Die Stadt selbst hingegen ist sehr sehenswert. Neben zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, sieht man überall die Streetart-Kunst, die der Stadt das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe-Lable eingebracht haben.
    Als ein touristisches Highlight ist sicherlich auch der Penang Hill einzustufen. Auf den Aussichtspunkt kann man mehrere Stunden lang hochwandern (eine Asphaltstrasse), eine Bahn nehmen, oder sich mit einem Jeep hochfahren lassen. Wir entscheiden uns für den Jeep. Ziemlich dekadent, wie Isaac anmerkt. Dies fiel ihm allerdings erst auf dem halben Weg nach oben, mit der Brise der Airconditioning im Gesicht, auf.

    Why is George Town called George Town? The British named the town after King George III, but unlike other places, the town kept the name even after Malaysia's independence. This is because the locals regarded the name as "good for business". This seems to have worked, at least the area appears to be more prosperous than the south of the country.
    However, our arrival in George Town could have been a little more relaxed. We spent over two hours looking for the right bus station in Kulala Lumpur, rattling off three different ones, only to realise that the bus would have stopped at the second and third station anyway. As a result, we only arrived at the hostel after midnight. However, things didn't get any better for the time being. Another hostel guest informed us that there were bedbugs in her room next door. After a lengthy search and some paranoia, we declare the beds bedbug-free, which fortunately turns out to be correct.
    The city itself, however, is well worth seeing. In addition to numerous sights, you can see street art everywhere, which has earned the city the UNESCO World Heritage label.
    Penang Hill is certainly another tourist highlight. You can hike up to the viewpoint for several hours (on a tarmac road), take a train or be driven up in a jeep. We opt for the jeep. Quite decadent, as Isaac remarks. However, he only realised this halfway up, with the breeze from the air conditioning in his face.    もっと詳しく

    Wir gehören wohl zu den wenigen, die in Phuket etwas anderes machen, als am Strand zu liegen. Und dies, obwohl die Region eine interessante chinesisch-malayisch-thailändische Mischkultur aufweist. So klappern wir also in gewohnter Manier, die Sehenswürdigkeiten, inklusive einem alten Landsitz und dem Monkey-Hill ab. Letzterer wird seinem Namen vollkommen gerecht. Beim Weg nach oben wird man von Affengruppen kritisch gemustert, ob es nicht doch etwas gibt, was sie essen könnten. Ihre Favoriten sind jegliche Esswaren, aber auch Wasser-Flaschen. Im Fall eines Touristen, umkreisten sie ihn gar solange, bis er ihnen eher unfreiwillig seine Bierdose überlässt.

    We are probably one of the few people in Phuket who do anything other than lie on the beach. And this despite the fact that the region has an interesting mixed Chinese-Malay-Thai culture. So, in our usual manner, we rattle off the sights, including an old country estate and Monkey Hill. The latter lives up to its name. On the way up, we are scrutinised by groups of monkeys to see if there is anything they might eat. Their favourites are any kind of food, but also water bottles. In the case of one tourist, they even circled him until he unwillingly gave them his beer can.    もっと詳しく

    Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

    Ein versehentlicher Trip. So lässt sich dieser Abstecher in den Massentourismus wohl am besten beschreiben. Von der Recherche (von der sich Isaac eine kaum touristisch besuchte Insel versprach) bis zur Wahl des Hostels (bei dem Raphael sich auf erkaufte Referenzen verliess) ging manches schief. Davon aber mal abgesehen ist die Insel wie aus dem Bilderbuch. Die Viewpoints erlauben eine tolle Aussicht über die Insel. Dies erkennen auch manche möchtegerne Influenzer. So weisst Isaac Raphael darauf hin, dass er bereits volle zehn Minuten über diese Leute lästere. Er findet aber, es sei okey, das auch weiterhin zu machen - Glück gehabt!
    Ganz dem Trubel hingeben, wollen wir uns aber dann doch nicht. Wir versuchen uns als Abenteuer-Urlauber und mieten Kayaks, um damit die Strände der Insel abzupaddeln. Hier zeigt uns jedoch Mutter Natur eindrücklich die Limiten von Sonnencreme und die schnell einsetzenden Symptome von Dehydrierung.

    An accidental trip. That's probably the best way to describe this detour into mass tourism. From the research (from which Isaac expected an island with hardly any tourists) to the choice of hostel (where Raphael relied on purchased references), many things went wrong. But apart from that, the island is like something out of a picture book. The viewpoints offer great views over the island. Even some wannabe influencers recognise this. Isaac points out to Raphael that he's been ranting about these people for a full ten minutes. But he thinks it's okay to continue doing so - lucky us!
    But we don't want to give in completely to the hustle and bustle. We try our hand at adventure holidays and rent kayaks to paddle along the island's beaches. Here, however, Mother Nature impressively shows us the limits of sun cream and the rapid onset of symptoms of dehydration.    もっと詳しく

    Heute geht es bereits früh raus. Wir stehen um fünf Uhr auf, für eine Tour, die nicht nur Island-Hopping verspricht, sondern auch damit wirbt, durch ihre Abfahrt vor Sonnenaufgang, dem Touristentrubel zu entgehen. Geweckt hat uns allerdings ohnehin ein Gockel, der sich ab 4 Uhr die Seele aus dem Leib krähte.
    Die Werbung des Trips ist nicht per se falsch. Wir sind tatsächlich da, bevor die grossen Menschenmassen da sind. Allerdings als Teil einer grösseren Menschenmasse. Der Massentourismus ist uns also gefolgt. Die erste Insel, die dabei angelaufen wird, ist Ko Phi Phi Lee. Das Highlight ist dabei die Maya Bay, in der man seit 2018 nicht mehr schwimmen darf, da sie unter Naturschutz steht. Der oben genannte Massentourismus hatte zum Kollaps des Ökosystems geführt, welches nun mit dem Riff Schritt für Schritt wieder instand gesetzt wird. Das Thema von zerstörten Riffen und gefährdeten Ökosystemen scheint hier allgemein ein grosses Problem zu sein.

    It's an early start today. We get up at five o'clock for a tour that not only promises island hopping, but also advertises the fact that it departs before sunrise to avoid the tourist crowds. However, we were woken up by a rooster crowing his head off from 4am anyway.
    The trip's advertising is not wrong per se. We are actually there before the big crowds arrive. But as part of a larger crowd. So mass tourism has followed us. The first island we visit is Ko Phi Phi Lee. The highlight here is Maya Bay, where swimming has been prohibited since 2018 as it is a nature reserve. The aforementioned mass tourism led to the collapse of the ecosystem, which is now being restored step by step along with the reef. The issue of destroyed reefs and endangered ecosystems seems to be a major problem here in general.    もっと詳しく

    Zurück in Phuket, gehen wir es etwas gemütlicher an. Das ist auch nicht schlecht, schliesslich ist Isaac auf unserer Boot-Tour auf einen Seeigel getreten und Raphael hat sich eine Erkältung eingefangen. Das hält uns aber nicht davon ab, einen beeindruckenden Tempel und denm grossen weissen Buddha zu besuchen.

    Back in Phuket, we take it a little easier. That's not a bad thing, after all Isaac stepped on a sea urchin on our boat tour and Raphael caught a cold. But that doesn't stop us from visiting an impressive temple and the big white Buddha.    もっと詳しく

    Patong Beach, Thailand

    So sieht Entspannung aus. Einen ganzen Tag einfach mal nichts tun. Zwei Nächte in einem tollen Hotel übernachten und geniessen. (nach über zwei Wochen in Hostels).
    Das war zumindest der Plan. Das Hotel entpuppte sich als üble Absteige mit dreckigen Bettlaken, einer Ameisen-Kolonie als Mitbewohner und anderen unerfreulichen Überraschungen. Entsprechend sind wir binnen einer halben Stunde wieder ausgezogen und haben uns in ein (schickes) Hostel nahe des Strandes einquartiert. Dies erwies sich als bessere Wahl - grösstenteils. Eine kleine Ausnahme war dabei eine deutsche Touristin, welche wohl durch den Flug eine leichte Amnesie erlitten haben muss - anders ist es kaum erklären, wie sie jeglichen Anstand vergessen konnte und morgens um halb 5 fast eine Handgreiflichkeit im Dorm anzettelte.
    Aber hey - die Entspannung lassen wir uns nicht nehmen. Raphael geniesst den freien Tag mit einem Buch in verschiedenen Cafés, während sich Isaac beim Buoldern austobt.

    This is what relaxation looks like. Simply doing nothing for a whole day. Spend two nights in a great hotel and enjoy. (after more than two weeks in hostels).
    At least that was the plan. The hotel turned out to be a nasty dump with dirty sheets, a colony of ants as flatmates and other unpleasant surprises. Accordingly, we left within half an hour and moved into a (chic) hostel near the beach. This turned out to be a better choice - for the most part. One small exception was a German tourist who must have suffered a slight case of amnesia during the flight - there's no other explanation for her forgetting all decency and almost starting a fight in the dorm at half past four in the morning.
    But hey - we're not going to let the relaxation get taken away from us. Raphael enjoys the day off with a book in various cafés, while Isaac lets off steam bouldering.    もっと詳しく

    Kultur, Smog und ein (kurzer) Zwangshalt: Knapp drei Wochen nach Reisebeginn, erreichen wir Bangkok. Die Stadt wartet mit beeindruckenden Monumenten auf, wie dem Grand Palace, dem Wat Chetuphon Wimon oder dem Wat Ratchawararam. Es gibt allerdings auch etwas weniger prunkvolle Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie der Floating Market und einige Museen, die durchaus einen Besuch wert sind.
    Die Stadt existiert jedoch in einem ewigen Zwielicht, verursacht durch eine Smog-Glocke die, zumindest während unserer Anwesenheit, stehts über der Stadt liegt. Beeindruckend ist die daraus entstehende Rotfärbung des Sonnenuntergangs, aber auch der "frühe Sonnenuntergang", sobald die Sonne am Horizont unter die Smog-Grenze sinkt. Die Schadstoffe überschreiten die von der WHO festgelegten Obergrenzen um das sechsfache. Dies scheint aber hier als Dauerzustand akzeptiert zu sein.
    Aus unserer Abreise nach 4 Tagen wird schliesslich nichts, da Raphael die Funktionen des Gesundheitssystems vor Ort austesten will. Kurz vor der Abreise aus Bangkok hat sich die Erkältung aus Phuket inzwischen so weit verschlechtert, dass ein Arztbesuch unausweichlich wird. Die Diagnose: Eine beginnende Lungenentzündung. Der Arzt verordnet Antibiotika für drei Tage, und einen Folgetermin zwei Tage später. Auf Raphaels Rückfrage, ob dieser Kontrolltermin auch woanders auf unserer Reiseroute stattfinden könne, antwortet der Arzt in bestimmtem Tonfall: "You are going nowhere - I'll see you in two days!". Und tatsächlich - zwei Tage später, nach dem Folgetermin, sind wir gerade einmal einen Tag später als geplant "good to go".

    Culture, smog and a (brief) forced stop: We arrive in Bangkok just three weeks after starting our journey. The city boasts impressive monuments such as the Grand Palace, Wat Chetuphon Wimon and Wat Ratchawararam. However, there are also some less ostentatious sights, such as the Floating Market and a few museums, which are definitely worth a visit.
    However, the city exists in a perpetual twilight, caused by a smog bell that, at least while we were there, constantly hangs over the city. The resulting red colouring of the sunset is impressive, as is the "early sunset" as soon as the sun dips below the smog line on the horizon. The pollutants exceed the upper limits set by the WHO by a factor of six. However, this seems to be accepted here as a permanent condition.
    In the end, our departure after 4 days is cancelled as Raphael wants to test the functions of the local healthcare system. Shortly before leaving Bangkok, the cold from Phuket had worsened to such an extent that a visit to the doctor is unavoidable. The diagnosis: incipient pneumonia. The doctor prescribes antibiotics for three days and a follow-up appointment two days later. When Raphael asks if this follow-up appointment could take place somewhere else on our itinerary, the doctor replies in a firm tone: "You are going nowhere - I'll see you in two days!". And indeed - two days later, after the follow-up appointment, we are "good to go" just one day later than planned.    もっと詳しく

    Chiang Mai ist die erste (bewohnte) Stadt in Thailand, welche wir wirklich als ganzes sehr schön finden. Sie wird von einer alten Stadtmauer umschlossen und beherbergt eine grosse Anzahl an Tempeln. Von unserem lokalen Guide lernen wir viel über Geschichte, Kultur und Religion der Region.
    Die Stadt hat eine spannende Geschichte ausserhalb des thailändischen Nationalstaates. Chiang Mai war zuerst Hauptstadt eines eigenständigen Königreichs, bevor dieses ein burmesischer Vasallenstaat wurde. Während die Briten Burma, heute Myanmar, kolonialisierten, bot sich Chiang Mai die Chance zur Unabhängigkeit. Diese behielt sie dann auch relativ lange, bis das Königreich 1892 Teil Thailands, damals noch Siams wurde.

    Chiang Mai is the first (inhabited) city in Thailand that we find really beautiful as a whole. It is surrounded by an old city wall and is home to a large number of temples. We learn a lot about the history, culture and religion of the region from our local guide.
    The city has an exciting history outside of the Thai nation state. Chiang Mai was initially the capital of an independent kingdom before it became a Burmese vassal state. While the British were colonising Burma, now Myanmar, Chiang Mai was given the opportunity to gain independence. It retained this for a relatively long time until the kingdom became part of Thailand, then still Siam, in 1892.    もっと詳しく

    Doi Lom Elephant Rescue Centre

    Heute sind wir mit Juicy unterwegs. Er wurde uns von zwei Schweizer Reisenden in Phuket empfohlen und schwankt stehts irgendwo zwischen Genie und Wahnsinn. Nichtsdestotrotz ist er ein sehr unterhaltsamer und lustiger Gesprächspartner. Er ist in einem kleinen Dorf in den Bergen Nordthailands aufgewachsen. Und genau in dieses nimmt er uns auch mit. Vor Ort besuchen wir eine Elefanten-Auffangstation, die Elefanten aufnimmt, welche zu schwerer Arbeit gezwungen wurden. Diese hat die Auffangstelle dann freigekauft und versorgt sie nun in der Station.
    Wir werden heute also in traditioneller Kleidung eingekleidet und bereiten Essen für die Elefanten vor. Mit unseren Eimern voll mit Futter, bemühen sich die beiden Elefantendamen natürlich dann auch gerne zu uns. Als wir mit unseren Goodies ausgeschossen sind beschliesst die eine der beiden Elefanten, dass sie genug von uns hat, und grast woanders vor sich hin. Gut zu wissen, dass es ihre freie Entscheidung ist, ob sie mit uns interagieren wollen. Einige Bananen überzeugen die beiden dann jedoch trotzdem, dass sie ihr tägliches Bad nehmen sollten. Jedoch gilt auch da: alles solange die beiden Lust haben. Das hinterlässt bei uns ein sehr positives Bild und soweit wir das beurteilen können, werden die Elefanten in der Station gut behandelt.

    Today we are travelling with Juicy. He was recommended to us by two Swiss travellers in Phuket and always fluctuates somewhere between genius and madness. Nevertheless, he is a very entertaining and funny person to talk to. He grew up in a small village in the mountains of northern Thailand. And that's exactly where he takes us. On site, we visit an elephant sanctuary that takes in elephants that have been forced into hard labour. The sanctuary then bought them free and now looks after them at the centre.
    So today we are dressed in traditional clothing and prepare food for the elephants. With our buckets full of food, the two female elephants are of course happy to join us. When we have finished with our goodies, one of the two elephants decides that she has had enough of us and grazes elsewhere. It's good to know that it's up to them to decide whether they want to interact with us. However, a few bananas convince them that they should have their daily bath. But the same applies here: anything as long as they feel like it. This leaves us with a very positive impression and, as far as we can tell, the elephants are treated well at the centre.    もっと詳しく

    Heute beginnen wir einen viertägigen Road-Trip, der uns an all die verstreuten Ziele in Nordthailand bringen soll, welche mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln unerreichbar sind. Wir beginnen dabei im Doi Inthanon National Park, wo es neben schönen Wasserfällen auch einen Tempel und den höchsten Punkt Thailands (2565 m.ü.M.) zu bewundern gibt.

    Raphael und seine leichte Obsession mit UNESCO-Welterbe kommen heute voll auf ihre Kosten. Nicht nur eine, sondern zwei Stadtruinen stehen auf dem Programm! Diese stammen aus der Zeit, als verschiedene Könige Thailand, aufgeteilt in kleinere Königreiche, beherrschten. Sukhothai scheint in der Hauptsaison bei einer breiten Masse an Touristen beliebt zu sein. Dies zeigt sich auch daran, dass die meisten anderen Touristen mit Golfcarts durch den Park kurven.

    Raphael and his slight obsession with UNESCO World Heritage sites get their money's worth today. Not one, but two city ruins are on the programme! These date back to the time when various kings ruled Thailand, divided into smaller kingdoms. Sukhothai seems to be popular with a large number of tourists in the high season.     Diese Ruinen (auch UNESCO-Welterbe!) sind den ersten heute sehr ähnlich. Mit einem signifikanten Unterschied - sie sind menschenleer. Wir sind hier also die einzigen Touristen, die um die alten Tempel und Stadtüberreste stolpern! Was auch hier gilt: eine neue Stadt, mit einer neuen, spannenden Geschichte dahinter.

    These ruins (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!) are very similar to the first ones today. With one significant difference - they are deserted.     Raphaels Routenplanung ist auch heute wieder hervorragend. Dank seiner Recherche sehen wir nicht nur die aktuellen Sehenswürdigkeiten, sondern sogar schon die Hotspots "von Morgen". (Ich überlasse es euch, zu spekulieren, wer diesen Text verfasst hat.)
    Hier überragt eine riesige weisse Buddha-Statue das Tal. Während Statue und Tempel bereits fertig sind, steht die Touristen-Infrastruktur noch nicht. Perfekt für uns, so sind wir auch hier die einzigen Besucher!
    Über den Weg dahin, sollten wir wohl besser nicht zu viele Worte verlieren. Nur soviel:
    Isaac begründet seine Überholmanöver damit, dass er seinen Fahrstil den Einheimischen anpasse...und überhaupt ist er der Ansicht, dass es sich via den Pannenstreifen schneller links abbiegen lässt, als wenn man in der Schlange steht.
    Raphael hingegen scheint an einer rot-grün-Sehschwäche zu leiden. Das lässt sich auch nicht damit schönreden, dass die Ampel ja dunkel-orange gewesen sei. Ach ja, bei nächtlichen Überlandfahrten, bei der 90 Stundenkilometer erlaubt sind, muss man jederzeit mit einer Vollbremse vor einem unbeleuchteten Checkpoint rechnen - also alles anschnallen bitte!

    Raphael's route planning is excellent again today. Thanks to his research, we not only see the current sights, but even the hotspots "of tomorrow". (I'll leave it to you to speculate who wrote this text).
    Here, a huge white Buddha statue towers over the valley. While the statue and temple are already finished, the tourist infrastructure is not yet in place. Perfect for us, as we are the only visitors here too!
    We probably shouldn't say too much about the way there. Just this much:
    Isaac justifies his overtaking manoeuvres by saying that he adapts his driving style to that of the locals...and in general, he believes that it's quicker to turn left via the hard shoulder than if you're standing in a queue.
    Raphael, on the other hand, seems to suffer from a red-green visual impairment. This can't be explained away by the fact that the traffic lights were dark orange. By the way, when driving overland at night, where 90 kilometres per hour is permitted, you always have to be prepared to brake hard in front of an unlit checkpoint - so please fasten your seatbelts!    もっと詳しく

    Chiang Rai war etwas eine Enttäuschung. Wenn man nicht gerade Bilder für Instagram schiessen möchte, sind die beiden Attraktionen (weisser und blauer Tempel) "ganz okey" Der weisse Tempel irritiert uns durch den Innenraum, in der offiziell Gesellschaftskritik verarbeitet wird. Diese Kritik richtet sich jedoch ausschliesslich gegen den Westen, ist gespickt mit verschwörungstheoretischen Elementen, und beinhaltet viele, offensichtlich antisemitische Elemente.

    Chiang Rai was a bit of a disappointment. If you don't want to take pictures for Instagram, the two attractions (white and blue temple) are "quite okay" The white temple irritates us with its interior, which officially criticises society.     Ein Tempel in einer Höhle - wenn das nicht aufregend klingt! Und tatsächlich, wir klettern fast eine halbe Stunde durch ein Höhlensystem, in dem verschiedene Schreine untergebracht sind. Hilfreich war dabei ein Mönch, der uns darauf hingewiesen hat, dass gegen eine Gebühr das Licht in den Höhlen angeknipst wird.

    Einen weiteren Höhlen-Tempel alleine zu besuchen wäre wohl zu viel erwartet gewesen. Hier hat der Tages-Tourismus aus Chiang Mai sich schon komplett etabliert. Diese (weniger spektakuläre Höhle) kann man dann auch nur mit einem Guide erkunden. Aber naja, besser als garnichts, schliesslich sind wir schon bei unserem letzten Halt vor Chiang Mai.

    Visiting another cave temple alone would probably have been too much to expect. The day tourists from Chiang Mai have already completely established themselves here.     Es war wohl eine gute Entscheidung, genügend Zeit für den Grenzübertritt einzurechnen. Während wir problemlos und relativ schnell durchkommen, hat ein Teil der Mitreisenden in unserem Busses weniger Glück. So warten wir dann also alle rund zwei Stunden, bis wir dann doch noch in der Stadt ankommen. Schliesslich ist dies auch nur ein Zwischenstopp für die morgige Fahrt auf dem Slow-Boat.

    It was probably a good decision to take enough time for the border crossing. While we get through relatively quickly and without any problems, some of our fellow bus-travellers are less fortunate. So we all wait around two hours until we finally arrive in the city.     Mekong - Slowboat

    Stellt euch vor, wie das sein muss: mit einem Boot gemütlich den Mekong runter schippern, vielleicht mal etwas dösen, ein gutes Buch lesen und natürlich, die Natur beobachten, welche am Boot vorbeizieht. Diesen Traum wollen wir uns erfüllen und mit dem Boot nach Luang Prabang fahren. Nur eine Kleinigkeit stört dabei: diesen Traum teilen wir mit etwa 140 anderen Touristen, auf einem Boot, welches für etwa 70 Personen ausgelegt ist.
    Mit Beinfreiheit, die uns von einem Easyjet-Flug träumen lässt, geht der erste Bootstag also los. Rund sieben Stunden harren wir auf dem Kahn aus, bis wir schliesslich in Pak Beng zur nächtlichen Pause anlegen.
    Da geht die Odyssee leider erst richtig los. Viele der Touristen haben mit Pauschalreisen fast alle verfügbaren Zimmer aufgekauft. So irren wir eine halbe Stunde durchs Dorf, mit den Optionen auf einem Flachdach auf dem Betonboden, oder auf dem Boot selbst zu übernachten. Schliesslich erbarmt sich dann doch ein Tuktukfahrer, der uns in ein Hotel etwas ausserhalb bringt. Dort ergattern wir noch das letzte (erstaunlich preiswerte) Zimmer. Einige Mitreisende müssen sich dann tatsächlich mit dem Boot begnügen.
    Der zweite Tag ist dann etwas besser. Es sind wohl neun Stunden, doch immerhin haben wir bessere Plätze.

    Imagine what it must be like: cruising comfortably down the Mekong on a boat, perhaps dozing off for a while, reading a good book and, of course, watching nature pass by. We want to fulfil this dream and take the boat to Luang Prabang. There's just one small problem: we share this dream with around 140 other tourists on a boat that is designed for around 70 people.
    With legroom that makes us dream of an Easyjet flight, we set off on our first day on the boat. We endure around seven hours on board until we finally dock in Pak Beng for our nightly break.
    Unfortunately, that's when the odyssey really begins. Many of the tourists have bought up almost all the available rooms on package holidays. So we wander around the village for half an hour, with the options of spending the night on a flat roof on the concrete floor or on the boat itself. Finally, a tuktuk driver takes pity on us and takes us to a hotel a little further out. There we manage to get the last (surprisingly cheap) room. Some of our fellow travellers actually have to make do with the boat.
    The second day is a little better. It's about nine hours, but at least we have better seats.    もっと詳しく
