Bienvenido, Otra Vez

Since retiring, Brenda and I have spent the winter months in some far-away, sunny place. However, over the last year, we've both become very involved with our musical hobbies. Brenda has cello lessons and plays in at least two ensembles, while I have put together The Fairweather Blues Band with a great bunch of very talented guys. We're both enjoying making music so much that neither of us wanted to take too long a break from it. And, because Brenda is a member of a Federal Retiree program, she and her partner (me!) get forty days of free travel insurance per trip. Thus our first abridged winter getaway was born.
Thailand was our destination of choice this year, but when we looked in October, the cost of airfare had nearly doubled since the summer, so we opted to return to Mazatlan on the Mexican Pacific coast. The last time we were here was the winter of 2019/2020, a trip that had us travel home just one week before Covid-19 shut down the world. We quite enjoyed the town back then. and made some new friends while we were here. The relatively short four and a half hour flight, and lack of jetlag, make the destination even more attractive to us.
We had to get very creative with Westjet, the only airline that flies here direct from Vancouver, as their basic fare is very prohibitive when it comes to baggage. In order to get our travel instruments on board, we had to go out and buy a 105-liter duffel bag and pay to check it into the cargo hold. Any other airline allows us to bring the instruments into the cabin as carry-on.
Despite leaving thirty minutes late, we arrived in Mazatlan right on schedule, and made our way to our AirBnb, which is located smack dab in the middle of Centro and a block and a half from the Mercado Central. Our host, Alan, is originally from Edmonton, and has been very accomodating, even providing cooler-sized bottles of drinking water for us.
Like everywhere else, prices for food here have gone up considerably since our last visit, but we managed to snag a jumbo three-kilo papaya at the market yesterday for about $7.00 CDN.
On Friday, we took in an amazing sunset with Anita, Ernie, Indra and Doug, while sipping Margaritas and beer at a seaside cafe. Then we went out for a dinner of delicious gorditos in one of Indra's favorite Mom and Pop Mexican restaurants.
It ain't Chiang Mai, but life is still pretty good here.Leggi altro
