    Anamori Inari

    1 мая 2022 г., Япония ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Pretty tired but it feels unbelievable to be wandering the streets of Tokyo again. Stumbled upon Anamori Inari Jinja, which had rows and rows of the tiniest cutest torii I’ve ever seen!

    7 мая 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Spent the day biking around the northern part of Itoshima peninsula. Stopped at a small seaside restaurant for red sea bream and chazuke (pour green tea over the rice).

    Yanai’s Paper Goldfish

    14 мая 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The Town of White Walls is like taking a walk back in time. This peaceful, quiet street is lined with traditional Edo-style merchant houses and shops, all painted in white. And apparently the goldfish are lit up at night?! (I wish I knew that before I left!) Well, I’ll be back in August, apparently there’s a big Paper Goldfish festival on the 13th.

For the hike up the mountain: There are a few paths up to the peak, I followed the “scenic but difficult” route. The view from the top is great—you can see almost all around. Apparently the mountain is one of the 100 best in the region and is sung about at the local high school.

    Tokuyama (Yamaguchi Prefecture)

    14 мая 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Staying a couple nights in Tokuyama while exploring the surrounding area. Wandered into a neighborhood ramen shop, extremely small, just a few bar-style seats. The husband and wife running the shop were extremely friendly, chatting with everyone there. They were very surprised when I came in—it sounds like they don’t get many foreigners. They were like, why are you in Tokuyama, where are you going? (since there isn’t much to do here as a tourist). Anyway, apparently it’s more of a Hakata style ramen with flavors of pork bone.Читать далее

    Iwakuno’s Cormorant Training Facility

    15 мая 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

There’s a lot I can probably write about the history of this region, like how Kintai bridge is one of the most beautiful and famous footbridges in Japan. But I think instead I’ll focus on the Cormorant Training Facility. That was pretty cool.Читать далее

Apparently this is one of the best places to see the sunset in Japan, but I caught the 17:40 train back to Tokuyama and didn’t stay.

    Kiyosu Castle

    22 июля 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Kiyosu Castle was built between in the early 1400s, but this 1989 reconstruction is likely not accurate since there are no records of the original castle’s design. Regardless, it’s a stunning landmark in Kiyosu. The castle (northwest turret or watchtower) houses numerous artifacts from long ago, with each floor documenting a different era in its history. And there’s a great view from the top, too. Of course, the view from Otebashi Bridge on the Gojo River was my favorite.Читать далее

    Atsuta Jinju

    24 июля 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

According to Wikipedia, this long-revered Shinto shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Keikō (71–130) and ranks alongside the Grand Shrine of Ise. It was right off the Meitetsu line so I hopped off to check it out on my way to Tokoname. I didn’t get any good pictures, but the giant camphor tree was really impressive. I also saw a rooster, which is apparently a thing here.Читать далее

    6 августа 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Hokkaido used to be closely connected to southern Karafuto (by ferry), but was lost to Russia around the end of WWII (and is presently Sakhalin). Wakkanai Park contains a number of memorials to those who lost their lives or livelihoods as a result. On a clear day, you can see Sakhalin from here (it’s about 27 mi away). I saw it from the plane, but not from the ground.

Another interesting memorial at Wakkanai Park was one of thanks to the Sakhalin huskies trained here before an important expedition to the South Pole. Unfortunately, the relief team was delayed due to bad weather, and the huskies were left in Antarctica… but the lead dogs, Taro and Jiro (two littermates), were miraculously found one year later.

    Cape Sōya

    7 августа 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Technically, according to Wikipedia, “Japan's northernmost point is disputed, because Japan considers it to be on Iturup [one of the southern Kuril islands], an island de facto governed by Russia.” However, they did build the monument here, and, also here, are the northernmost public toilets in Japan (and that’s based on an even more reputable source: Google Maps).Читать далее

    7 августа 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Besides the idiot doing yoga on the wall behind the dolphin-clock statue (which wasn’t really that photoworthy anyway), and what I suspect was highly overpriced umi don (raw sea urchin/rice bowl), Cape Noshappu was a relatively quiet, out-of-the-way place. The walk along the bay was the best part, though.Читать далее

    Mount Rishiri

    9 августа 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Roughly 9-hour roundtrip hike up an extinct stratovolcano (el. 1,721 m or 5,646 ft; last eruption: 5830 BC). I took the main Oshidomari hiking trail just short of the summit. I wanted to take Kutsugata trail down, but it was really sketchy. Missing the last bus (by over an hour—it was not close)… and an apparent lack of taxis meant another 15 km of walking to get back to Rishiri/Kutsugata.Читать далее

A beautiful hike along the northwestern coast of Rebun. Took the bus to Cape Sukoton, enjoyed a coffee and some kelp ice cream with a nice view of Todojima, and then hiked south along the coast, at a comfortable pace, for about four hours.

Also, there was a minor earthquake last night, but no tsunami warnings or damage reported.

    Momoiwa

    12 августа 2022 г., Япония ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

“Momoiwa” translates to “peach rock.” This whole hike in the southern tip of Rebun (the “Momoiwa Observatory Shiretoko Course”) was incredibly beautiful and full of wildflowers. I did extend the hike through to Kitano Canary Park, which had this old-style schoolhouse that was the set for some movie. There are nice views of Rishiri from here and the cafe has really great coffee, but it was the hike that was truly remarkable.Читать далее
