    El Chaltén - 1. Day

    February 9, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Patagonia - here I come!

My plane was supposed to leave at 8.30 in the morning. Viktor organized a taxi that would pick me up in the morning and bringe me to the airport. 🚕
Of course I could have taken the bus, but it’s South America and I don’t trust the buses here! 😂
After a short flight of 3 1/2 hours, I arrived at the airport in El Calafate.
From there I took a bus that brought me to El Chaltén in 3 hours. This landscape here is just amazing 😍

I didn’t wanted to spend the first day in the hostel, especially because the weather was sunny. ☀️
So I decided to do my first hike to a waterfall close by: Chorrillo Del Salto.
The path was easy to find and it took me only 1 1/2 hours to go one way. 😎✌️
When I arrived in the evening, I cooked some pasta for dinner and slept like a baby from this first visit in the nature. 😂
Of course I was well prepared! Water, food, rain jacket, head, gloves, etc ... like a pro 🤓

  • El Chaltén - 2. Day

    February 10, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ -10 °C

On my second day, I was full of energy, packed all my things and went on my first big hike alone. ✌️
This should lead me 9 km each way to Laguna Torre, a giant lake with a glacier close to it.

The route was challenging, mainly because I have no experience. In between it was very sunny and warm, then shady and cold again. 🤷‍♀️

But the effort was worth it, because the lake and the view of the glacier were unique. I made a little siesta and returned to El Chaltén.

On my way back I met a group of friendly people that would walk with me to the town. Thanks again for being part of this funny and friendly group! 😍👍

  • El Chaltén - Los Cóndores y Las Águilas

    February 12, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After having rested almost all day yesterday and recovering from the long hike, today I want to do two short hikes near El Chaltén.

So after breakfast, I started my hike to the two viewpoints (Miradores) Los Cóndores and Las Águilas. The walk takes about an hour and you can watch the condors flying from up here - unfortunately, I was not lucky and saw none.

You have a breathtaking view from above. On the one side of the mountains across the vastness of the Patagonian Pampa and on the other side to the little town of El Chaltén.

My adventures in El Chaltén end here because tomorrow, my bus goes back to El Calafate, where I will drive to the Perito Moreno Glacier on Friday.

  • El Calafate - Parque Naci. Los Glaciares

    February 13, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ -6 °C

Today was my visit to the Glaciar Perito Moreno.

Since I do not stay in a hotel or hostel, but at a private address, I could not be picked up by bus like the other guests, and had to take a taxi to their headquarters.
After we had collected all the guests, we drove to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

We stopped at the only restaurant in the park, next to many other buses and cars, and had a few hours here to see the glacier from afar and to buy a little snack.

I drank a hot chocolate, ate a Medialuna (Argentinian croissant), and bought a little magnet as a memory before we were picked up by the bus again. At the edge of the lake, a ship was waiting for us to take us to the glacier on the other side.

I even had the possibility to navigate the ship for a while and share Mate tea with the captain.

  • El Calafate - Hike On Perito Moreno

    February 13, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After we arrived on the other side with the ship, we went to a little camp in the hills. There, the guides gave us gloves and hats because the glacier is very cold.
I had my own with me.

Then we walked to the camp right at the foot of the glacier, where we received special spikes for our shoes. We used the little break for a few photos.

Then the hike began. It's very strange to walk with the spikes on the feet. We were told to ram the shoes hard into the ice and hiked like this for about 90 minutes over the glacier - simply breathtaking !!

The guides had a surprise for us at the end of the trail - a whiskey to drink with REAL glacier ice! Then, we took the ship back to the bus and from there to El Calafate.

The guys had prepared an Asado with friends in the evening and I was very hungry after this long, exciting day!
