      Rockfig - final safari

      January 25, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Pete opted for a sleep in and the kids and I were up and ready for our 5am departure. Just as we were about to leave the lodge I was looking out beyond the pool and noticed movement. I thought it was a lion, but I had actually spotted a male leopard. We all crept to the outside area and watched this elusive creature as it stealthily made its way across the plain and into the bushes. We jumped in to the vehicle and went in search of it. Eddie went on foot with another guide to track it and we searched by car. It disappeared. Such an elusive animal. We were so lucky to have seen it at all. Timing is everything. We drove past 3 Cape buffalo that were right near the track we had walked on yesterday. We were relieved that we hadn’t seen them by foot!
We then headed off and saw wildebeest on the tar road, their coats glistening in the morning sun. Then to the hyena den where we saw the 5 cubs playing out of the den, and we only caught a glimpse of the mother as we were leaving.

We decided to go in search of the lions in the south. On our drive there we were amazed to see a lion in the distance sitting beside the road and then astonishingly finding an entire pride on both sides of the road with their cubs. Eddie then spotted the two male lions, off road. After observing the lionesses and cubs we went off the track and spent a long time watching the two male lions who were so close and looking extremely majestic. They were awake, alert and relaxed watching us. Liv got some great shots of the lions. Incredible we had seen the 3 different prides in this vast wilderness. On the drive back to the lodge we had close encounters with giraffe and zebras. We saw a leopard tortoise, elephants and vultures. We agreed it was one of the best safari trips, and such a great way to end.

We had breaky in the lodge and met Pete to share our stories, the kids happy to rub in what he missed, and he claims to have been happy with the extra 3 hours of sleep… We exchanged details with the Mitchells and got ready to pack up. Just as I was about to head to the chalet, Nicole advised me my room has been invaded by a baboon, breaking the glass jar where the nuts were held. It was probably the one time we had not locked the door and it was all in the space of an hour. They must observe and try each time.

We said fond farewells to all the RockFig team and were so grateful to have Frank and Eddie as our guide and tracker.
Flight from Hoedspruit to Joburg and then on to Sydney. Ted has already started plotting the next trip. We had the most amazing trip and created memories of a lifetime.

      Mapungubwe national park

      December 4, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

The idea of staying at Munati lodge was that it was relatively "close" (still about an hour drive) to Mapungubwe national park. I had been there back in 2017 and thought to remember it was quite a nice park. Unfortunately things changed quite a bit since then and the maintenance wasn't too good anymore. Another quite unpleasant surprise was that there was no petrol station in the park eventhough it was noted on their website. This resulted in having to drive another 70 km to the petrol station in Alldays of which we drove the last 60 km on the reserve tank of the car. The moment we arrived at that petrol station was incredibly relieving because we really weren't sure if the car would make it. Next to the car being so low on fuel that road was also full of potholes making those 70 km a real challenge. After the relief from reaching the petrol station we got a delicious homemade milkshake because funnily enough I remembered the little shop next to the petrol station from back in 2017 when we stranded there with both cars of Lajuma with flat tyres. After this quite unplanned start of the day we eventually managed to get into Mapungubwe. We did see some wildlife (view elephants far away, zebra and wildebeest) but honestly it was a bit disappointing and we got really confused by seeing cows and donkeys in what was supposed to be a big 5 game reserve. After we drove the full loop once, we asked at the entrance gate if it was normal we saw this little wildlife, they said they made an opening in the fence meaning animals could walk freely in and out of the park and just cross the border to Botswana, this also explained the cows and donkeys being present in the park. All in all quite a disappointing visit but definitely not a bad day. We jokingly call Mapungubwe a farm instead of a National park from now on.Read more

      November 8, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Read more

      Day 6 in Kruger park

      March 8 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 40 °C

Just a mashup of cute photos from the day that didn't make it into a post:
      -A cute bug.
-A picnic hut around a big tree.
-A fluffy water-buck (they are so cuddly, I just want to squeeze them soooooo tight).
-A secretary-bird, or "serpentaire" for the frenchies because they kill and eat venomous snakes while looking dignified, and I always thought that was bad-ass.
-A tired Avron at the local water hole

      Up to the dry north

      March 5 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 39 °C

We have driven north to the much drier area of camp Shingwedzi.
Which may not seem like it because all these pictures have water in it.
That's because the only signs of life after hours of dry shrubbery are at the few remaining water holes on the dams along drying up rivers.
It is bleak, it is 40 degrees Celsius, the network is on and off, but apparently the rustic camp has a beautiful pool, so there you go!

      -> unterwegs zum Krüger

      November 7, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 32 °C

Thunderbird (but like, not very pretty)

      March 8 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 40 °C

Today was a day of rarities:
      Introducing, the THUNDERBIRD!
Also known less dramatically as the Southern Ground Hornbill.
Now we had seen one of these, as you surely remember (no? Really?), at the Moholoholo reabilitation center.
      They are super rare.
So rare that there are signs at the camps to ask people seeing them to report these sightings.
Well, today we spotted not one, but two families in different locations!

      #exciting

Now they are not the prettiest of birds (and we have become eager birders, I'm afraid 👵 🐦), but this is still pretty cool.

A Day in Eco Camp Evening

      November 9, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

The second evening game drive started with a bumpy road, likely washed away by the rain, leaving behind many rocks. This rollercoaster ride was rewarded with a short walk through a forest with unique trees. We climbed some steep rocks, and then I witnessed the most beautiful view I've ever seen.

Oh boy, there are no words to describe this view, and no pictures can capture its beauty. It showcased the Luvuvhu river and a significant part of Kruger Park. 🤩

We enjoyed a sundowner at sunset, and right after, a little Elephant shrew appeared next to my feet (a member of the small five). We drove back in the dark, encountering zebras crossing our path, and even spotted a Bush Baby hiding in the tree (adorable!).
