Day 35: Alcaracejos - Hinojosa del Duque

      June 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Day 35, from Alcaracejos to Hinojosa del Duque, 22.7km.
If not bucolic, at least rural, this stage was marked by storks, granite and holm oaks.
On the way out of Alcaracejos, two storks were hunting in a meadow, and it was milking time for many cows.
After 3km, we passed through Villanueva del Duque, which was still asleep this Saturday morning, except for the storks on the church and the town hall.
Pilgrims are very popular in Villanueva del Duque; there's a statue of a pilgrim in the square, and scallop shells punctuate the main street.
This is also granite country. No wonder there are so many mojones on this stage.
Fuente la Lancha will be the last town before reaching Hinojosa del Duque.
What a contrast with yesterday: the Río Guadamatilla is dry, and we cross it without a care in the world. Fortunately, because the traffic on the bridge is very fast.
Granite boulders, holm oaks and farmhouses follow before we reach Hinojosa del Duque.

      Alcaracejos to Hinojosa del Duque

      February 29 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

D: Today was a sunny pleasant 21 km walk, mainly through farm land. We chatted with lots of animals along the way, and G also talked with a Shepherd who spoke some English and plans to walk part of the CF with friends in the summer. We are seeing storks nesting in church towers now, so reminiscent of the CF. We also passed by many old oak trees with definite personalities!

People remain pleasant and welcoming. A lot of dedication to building a Camino infrastructure here, as there has been all along the Mozarabe. They want us!

G’s ‘bullshit’ Spanish had come a long way and he can often have conversations with people. I am still at the basic ‘cafe con leche, por favor’ but I blame my diversion into learning Dutch instead of Spanish.

The walk into this town is quite dull for the last 4 km (industrial area) and unfortunately our hostal is on the outskirts of town. The Albergue is much better located in the pleasant centre but it is only one room, and we know from last night that it will have two heavy snorers in it. Lovely fellows, but we have become accustomed to quiet rooms on this walk.

      Cold but no rain!

      April 29, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Alcaracejos to Hinojosa el Duque. 21 km

Note to self—next time do not let someone convince you that a pair of smartwool socks is just as good as that little pair of lambs wool gloves sitting back in the USA in your camino gear drawer. It was in the 40s (Fahrenheit) the whole way, and my hands were like icicles.

This was a flat, rural, green, off road walk. Lots of mud and deep puddles, but when my mind started to grumble I remembered what the hostal owner told me yesterday— that it had been so dry that the farmers had been paying 4,000-5,000€ a month to have water trucked in for their livestock. And then a month ago it rained so much in one week that it topped their annual average. Things are whacky all over it seems.

I am in a basic pension run by a very nice woman who is grateful for the pilgrims. She had shut the family hostal/Bar/Restaurant business but opened up the lodging part a few years ago because of all the camino traffic. The albergue here is very nice, I’ve heard, but I’m sticking with the pension routine for now.

Tomorrow I’ll have 33 with some elevation gain but a long 10 km slog at the end on asphalt. For the record-I (and every other Peregrino) hate walking on asphalt!!
