      Abla - Huéneja 20.6km

      September 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We left Abla as the sun was rising. We knew we had a long day ahead.

Initially, we were hoping to walk from Abla to La Huertezuela, but the only accommodation in La Huertezuela, Cuevas El Descanso was booked out. The owner told us that if we were struggling by the time we arrived in La Huertezuela, he would drive us to Huéneja. We also had the option to take a taxi from Abla to Fiñana. Having had a good day yesterday, we decided to walk the 20km.

The walk was nice, a mix of sealed country roads (tarmac), unsealed (gravel) roads, rambla between Abla and Fiñana.

Fiñana sits on top of a hill, so to get our sello at the Ayuntamiento, we had to earn it.

Between Fiñana and La Huertezuela, we thought the road would never end. The views, however, we're very beautiful.

In La Huertezuela we found a shaded spot for lunch next to the polideportivo. We could hear a fitness class for the elderly in the building.

Between La Huertezuela and Huéneja, walking up the riverbed of río Izfalada was at times a bit challenging.

When we met Nely in Almería, and she looked at our plan, she suggested we stay at Casa Violeta in Huéneja, instead of the municipal albergue. Casa Violeta is interestingly decorated, and comfortable.

After resting, we went into town, and walked around. While having dinner we watched men playing dominos.

      Ocaña to Huéneja

      February 10 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

Debi: We began with a 7km walk to the next village, where we could have coffee and omelette. The wind was extreme headwinds and driving rain. We were soaked through. My boots were ponds. After food and drying up a bit we walked on for 8 km to the next village, where I insisted we find a taxi (not a very debi thing, but…) A local person gave us a ride to our destination, Hueneja. Another modest Albergue, but we are grateful. We are hanging out in the only open bar. Some people in the bar heard us trying to get vegetarian food and gave us their fresh beans. So kind.

Gerard: The waiter communicated with us thru the google translation app. She was very helpful and even went with Debi to the tienda for some shopping. She also made fabulous barbecued chicken for me on their little indoor charcoal oven. Highly recommended! > Gerard

      Day 6: Abrucena to Hueneja

      May 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

1st of May is a public holiday in Spain, and as we left Abrucena, everything was quiet.
The Camino comes down rapidly from the town, with initially a good guidance of arrows. We walked through several orchards, with trees that will hopefully provide a good harvest.
The arrows disappeared after a while, but Fiñana sitting on its hill guided us.
There is an ermita in Fiñana that used to be a mezquita. Built in the 12th century, it was converted into a church at the Reconquista, but kept its quibla and decorations of its mirhab. By chance we saw the parish sacristan open the door, and he let us have a look around.
The long walk along the rambla after Fiñana ensued, with beautiful scenery. When we arrived in La Huertezuela, where we intended to have our lunch, we found the village a buzz of activity. It was the romería of the local patron saint, San José Obrero. An outdoor mass was said, amidst the noise of the locals, and then everyone congregated to the square, where a giant paella was being cooked. We were the only ones there with a mochila, so we were approached by various participants, who invited us to join the crowd waiting for the paella.
The wait was a bit too long, and we had nowhere to put our mochilas, which we kept on our backs. So after a while, we politely asked to be excused and we continued to Hueneja.
We're staying at Casa Violeta. Violeta has now moved into the house with her family, so there's only one room, and we're the lucky ones.

      Abla to Hueneja

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Javier from Madrid cooked his family’s special rice recipe for Ramon the Hospitalier, Francisco from Seville and myself last night. Delicious.
I set off around 7.30 with cloudy skies and the temperature cool. Very easy going on country lanes until Finaña.
Finaña is a town on the side of a hill with at least two bars and a panadería (bakery). There is a
mosque converted to a church and lots of evidence of the mozarabe history. Apparently Queen Isabella stayed here with her army before expelling the moors from Granada in the 1400s.
More easy going on gravel roads to Venta Ratonera where Javier and Francisco passed me. Soon after I found them helping themselves to a fruit tree. Turned out to be delicious persimmons.
After La Huertezuela the going got a bit tougher in the river bed. It is dry at the moment, but the last 5km into Hueneja were draining.
Javier cooked us another lovely meal with local wine and cheese.
