Day 7: Villa Franca de Bierzo to Laguna

      12. huhtikuuta, Espanja ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Another long walk! 17 miles this time. Forgot to say, it ended up being a hot one! I think it was in the 80s. I was lucky to find a store that sold sun tan lotion. I forgot ours. But we did get some sun burn first.
What a beautiful day. Started off for quite a few miles walking on the road. No ones favorite. But finally went to mountains in a distance and country roads.
The last 3 miles or so was all up hill!! I will admit, at one point I may have thrown a temper tantrum. Why are we going all the way to Laguna?? There is a place to stay before that which works just as well. I lost. Patrick persisted.
In the end, after I barely survived getting up to the top of the mountain, it was magical. So many people we met along the way were here. This is the only alburgue so it was nice to see people we might not have seen for a few days.
After dinner, some young people got together and one was playing guitar and people were signing. Very nice!
      10 pm now. Lights out.
Tomorrow we go further up the mountain and down, down, down.

      Leaving O Cebreiro

      1. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

There were squeals of excitement (mostly from me!) as we woke up to a winter wonderland today, with a few centimetres of snow having fallen in the night (and still falling).

It was a gorgeous start to the walk as we walked through a magical snowscape. Lots of newbies had joined at O Cebreiro, and it’s going to get busier still when we get to Sarria in a couple of days as it’s the last 100km that get you the ‘compostela’ certificate. It’s hard not to feel a bit superior, to be honest!! Especially as they don’t seem to have got the memo about saying ‘Buen Camino’ to fellow pilgrims! And breathe…Lue lisää

      Welcome. to Galicia

      16. kesäkuuta 2022, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

I guess one can bittersweetly label this The Beginning of an End
Galicia is the last region to cross and the region of my destination- Santiago de Compostela

...it has been UNBELIEVABLE 3 weeks even with all my misfortunes!!!!

If you look closely you will immediately notice the difference in the trail... it's almost like driving from Philadelphia and crossing into Bucks or Montgomery County

Stage 26 - along the way

      30. huhtikuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Lots more rolling mountain views and the miles went by prettily as we passed through little villages.

Another big day today - 28km+ and the last 6km of it was steeply uphill. To add to that joy(!) it was raining quite heavily too, sending rivers of mud and animal poo our way 😧Lue lisää

      Again off the pavement

      1. kesäkuuta 2022, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

It’s flattening out now, so I think I’m near the top. I have forgotten to comment on the cuckoo birds in the forests. I’ve been hearing them all along. But this seemed particularly appropriate looking off into the valley below with the clouds. The stands of Broome can be quite luminous. There’s a nice marker at the border going into Galicia and the trail condition is markedly improved to graded decomposed gravel. Passed two Peregrinas from North Carolina. One was the wife of a Scoutmaster and mom of an Eagle Scout. She knew about Philmont. We picked up a massive wall in the cloudy trails and followed it into dark forest for a bit before breaking out into the open and seeing the Peregrina statue telling us we’ve reached O Cebreiro. About 2000 ft in 6 km. Then the sky opened up and poured for an hour. Took shelter at the municipal fountain which was thankfully roofed and met Oso a huge specimen of the local dogs that seem related to German Sheppards. It started to get crowded and I tried to get into my lodging early, but it was closed until 12:30. Heading back to the fountain, someone popped out of a hole and it turned out to be a little tavern that the crowd had not found. Time for a coffee and croissant au chocolate.Lue lisää

      Day 28: Villafranca a O’Cebreiro

      27. toukokuuta 2022, Espanja ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The mother of all ascents, as my guide book mentioned, was in fact not an over exaggeration as I had thought. What a day today. I left again later than usual as I struggle to get up at 5.30 these days. I get ready and head into the chilly mountain air, and make it about 1km before stopping for coffee. There are 3 different routes today, and I am headed to O’Cebreiro so need to cover 28km and a really steep ascent at the end to climb over 1000m in less than 1km.

While I enjoy my coffee someone mentions to me I’ve missed the turning for the mountain pass alternative route. I say that I will return to do it, as the main road apparently passes by the road for most of the day. This ended up being a great but extremely challenging day, as the mountain pass took me up 950m and back down again without making much headway in terms of distance. But, the pass was so beautiful. I listened to birds and some music and made my way through the trees and over the stones, thankful for a natural path and a break from walking by roads. When at the top, I stop at a beautiful town where there is a welcoming cafe. I stop there for an hour, very unlike me, but have a coffee and locally made chestnut cake and chestnut liqueur on the house.

I meet pilgrims and watch them go, and i know most of the people by now. I even meet Pien, from the Netherlands, and we share a hug in the knowledge we might not see each other again.

When I finally do leave, the day is in full swing and with that comes the heat. With most of the walk to go and a notorious climb at the end, I do not welcome the heatwave Spain is experiencing at the moment. I walk on.

The walk by the N1, and don’t spot many pilgrims. I figure I am behind. I keep walking through the sun and don’t stop. Applying as much sunscreen as I can. Somehow I make it to Las Herrerias, the town at the base of the mountain. It is 1.30 in the afternoon, and I drink some water and eat my sandwich to give me strength.

And then the climb! My legs tired but capable, the heat suffocating. Climbing in the blaring sun is another experience altogether. I pass a few struggling pilgrims and we wave to each other. I keep going and I try to medicate through the experience. Breathe in, breathe out. I make it to the town before and decide to stop for a beer. Here I sit next to a delightful woman in her 60s and her Camino friend, a Dutch woman in her 50s. They show me so much kindness! They fill up my water and give me some trail mix, they give me the strength to carry on.

I make it finally to Galicia, I cross the border in the mountains and continue another km to O’Cebreiro. A beautiful, ancient town set into the hills. Icy coloured stone and green trees, panoramic views of the valley on either side stretching as far as you can see. I check in and the usual ritual of shower, laundry and unpack. I head into town for food, and enjoy some Caldo Gallego.

I decide to attend pilgrims mass, which I have not done before. I am not religious, but I have heard that it is a special ceremony. I accidentally raise my hand in the sermon when the priests mentions English, thinking he was handing out translations. Nope! I end up delivering the Sermon in English for a room full of peasants. The priest brings people from every language, but English has the most to read. Nerve wracking! I abstain from eating the body of Christ, but I do think it is a beautiful ceremony even though I am not religious. I leave feeling slightly odd, but at peace.

I enjoy a wonderful glass of wine in the company of Fabian from the Netherlands and Anna from Germany. We watch the sunset together, over the valley. I feel very content.

A nights sleep is welcome, but not easy to fall asleep. I blame the wine. A short day tomorrow means a relaxed start, and perhaps even breakfast in the valley.

Camino Day 30: Trabadelo to O Cebreiro

      10. syyskuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Total Distance: 19.9km
      Step Count: 32.4k
      Blisters to date: 2
      Tortillas to date: 22
      Injuries: shin splints

Another beautifully perfect day on the Camino, full of greenery, farm animals and mountains! ⛰️

Today we officially crossed into Galicia after a bit of a climb to O Cebreiro, one of the most charming towns with jaw dropping views all round! Galicia would mark the nearing end of our journey.

It was a short day so we stopped a lot! Tried “tarta de Santiago” for the first time, had a melt in your mouth Spanish ham and goats cheese toast, dunked my head in every water fountain I could find and the spent the whole afternoon chillin in the town.

Spent a lil while with a lovely group of people we’d come across a few times, all from different places who’d met in the early stages and started walking together till the end. 🍻

I needed so downtime after that and sat a bar nearby when Tommaso appeared and decided to join me. He was keen to try out my watercolours so we shared a couple hours of silence while he painted and I journaled. 🎨

An Italian girl and a couple of her friends eventually joined us as well as Lukas who had been in Siesta mode. We were all going to have dinner together but somehow we managed to lose the other group, so it ended up being the three of us enjoying another pilgrim’s menu. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The food in Galicia is so yum!

Day 7 la laguna de castilla

      4. marraskuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Today was also very tough. It was raining almost the entire day. On top of it, I had to climb 700m in altitude and as soon as I reached top plateau, strong wind came. But not like in Brussels, you can barely walk, raincoat was useless, hailstorm was punching me in the face. Last 1km was a survival mode. Hopefully the wind will dye out during the night. I forgot my charger in the previous hostel, I will wait for luggage transportation guy tomorrow in O Cebreiro. He should bring it. It's a good service here.Lue lisää
