      Day 35 Into Melide

      June 10 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

After a delicious breakfast in Lestedo with an Irish Mom and her 10 year old daughter, we headed out of the rural town towards the bigger town of Melide. As we got to the beautiful arched bridge, we ran into Will and Patricia, who we met at Borda, in the Pyrenees Mountains 33 days ago. Lunch with our Tazmanian friends Kaye and Anne, and our Australian friends Margaret and Dave. Melede is known for its fresh octopus, and I tried a few pieces at dinner after Patricia told me to put it on bread and pretend it was pizza. It's still not my favorite 😕 Long walk tomorrow, followed by a longer walk into SANTIAGO the next day. Its so hard to believe our destination is so near.Read more

      Day 40-Lestedo

      October 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Walked 12 miles in an on and off drizzle and a little wind. There were alot more people on the trail today. Alot. We didn't see anyone we had met previously. Up until now, we've been in the middle of the pack. We're not slow walkers but we're not fast either. Fast, long-legged walkers passed us frequently. Now that there are alot of new pilgrims that started in Sarria and don't have their Camino legs yet, we're finding that we're passing alot of people.

The countryside is beautiful and the villages we walked through were cute, even through the rain. I think we passed a manure factory at some point because it smelled really bad.

Our host for tonight is also a pilgrim who bought this place five years ago when he stayed here during his Camino. He gave us big hugs when he found out we started in St. Jean, as he did too.

We didn't take too many pictures today because of the rain.

Our host took me and another lodger to see a 12th century church nearby that is thought to have been built by women. There is also a knight's tomb inside of it and frescoes from the 1400s. The elderly gentleman who gave us a tour is a defender of women and told us several times to keep fighting for women's rights. When we got back, our host gave a chupito (shot) of a local liqueur called Tostado. It tastes like caramel and packs a punch.

Day 35 -Rectoral del Lestedo, Spain

      October 23 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

      47 miles to Santiago

Another bright, sunny day of walking. Today we walked with Dave and Ellie from Australia, a couple we’ve walked with and had coffee with several times. They knew each other a bit, growing up in England,
went separately to Australia for jobs, and found each other in their late 20s. When you walk and talk for a few hours, there is time for good stories. A fun visit!

Our friend, Gretchen-from-Boston, will be with us tomorrow night. We haven’t seen her for over a week. She is a joy, and we’ll be staying in the same villages these last few nights before Santiago.

We left charming Portomarin early this morning. I’m including a video of the village, starting with the cathedral. Portomarin was located on the waterfront until 1963. News came that a dam was needed, and the city and Roman bridge would be underwater. The townspeople took apart the buildings, stone by stone, and rebuilt the village uphill. The 12th century Church of San Xoan in the video was dismantled and rebuilt
      in 1960-1963.

      **Post:**

Yesterday's walk from Portomarín to Lestedo was full of surprises! Despite the elevation gain, the miles flew by thanks to a lovely couple from Florida, David and Amy, who kept us entertained along the way. We were so caught up in conversation that we barely noticed how far we'd come until we were almost at our destination. The rain caught up with us during the last hour, but we found refuge in a cozy café where we enjoyed an adult beverage before heading on. After a refreshing shower and a wonderful dinner at Reitoral Lestedo, we had the pleasure of catching up with the awesome Colorado ladies we met on our first day. Today, we head towards Melide—another rainy day ahead, but it's all part of the Camino experience!Read more

      Palas de Rei

      October 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today I think we sort of snacked our way from cafe to village cafe; much good food was eaten and an herbal liqueur sampled. We mostly stayed dry until an absolute downpour shortly before the end of the day’s walk. I saw a super cute dog all kitted out in rain gear!

Regarding the newbies who flood the Camino in Sarria, I’d say it’s noticeable, with quite a few unfamiliar faces, but not the hoard seen at other, more hospitable, less rainy times.

Along the way today, which again was scenic, and included eucalyptus trees, we passed by an Iron Age castro, a stone village- photo and video below.

Today the first person from our early cohort, who obviously set a much faster pace than we did, arrived in Santiago. Jun, you are a BEAST! So fast! We will be there three days from now.

For now, though, I am nested in my bunk, full of delicious Italian food made by UK expats and starting to think about sleeping. And about phone charging strategies - often an issue in albergue.

      Hmmm... now giant ants...
      Gallega Cervezas? 🤨😐

Ahn b. Vietnam lives in San Diego.
In a course of our conversation it turned out that she walked with Melissa the woman from Ireland that I did couple of albergues with in the beginning of Meseta that I walked. Seems Melissa is slightly behind us at current moment.
It would be nice to see her again...

      Day 35

      September 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Not a great deal to report on today.. best thing, my back was ok..
A cool start .. nowhere near as cold as yesterday.. really misty and damp.. really rubbish pictures today as it was a shorter walk and literally more of the same, though I do seem to love the foggy shots 😂..
I briefly spoke/ caught up with a guy from Germany, who said it was 4 days I have gone past him 😬.. the French couple
Im I’ve been bumping into since the first week and Alexander 🙄…
When I reached Melide, I thought I ought to to try out the “best Octopus in the world “ eatery!!!
Whilst the white bit in the middle was gorgeous, the texture of the outside bit seriously made me want to vomit 🤢.. you get a tooth pick to eat it with!!.. I seriously lost all shame .. I pulled the outside off with my fingers and ate the middle ( because it was so expensive ) …. Seriously couldn’t understand how EVERYONE else just ate it all.. I wanted to throw up watching…
The gorgeously helpful waiter that served me ran out after me and told me I was a beautiful lady!!! 😳🤣🤣
Fab meal this evening, vegetables in my rice ❤️…
I’m so looking forward to home food!!!
      Poor pictures today…

      Day 32: Lestedo

      October 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Sunrise arrives on the late side this time of year, so I left Mercadoiro in the dark this morning, thankful for the new headlamp I got in Burgos. Even at that early hour, I could hear other pilgrims chatting as they walked.

The sky was starting to lighten up by the time I made it to A Parrocha, but it was still interesting to see modern lights illuminating the old stone structures in the hamlet.

Nothing was open yet in Vilacha as I passed through, so it was on for another few kilometers to find some breakfast.

The descent into Portomarin was surprisingly steep and narrow in some places—it was moving to see where the stone has been worn into “steps” by the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who have preceded me along this stretch of the Way.

A tall, lengthy bridge leads into Portomarin, testing my dislike of heights. I was grateful for the waist high barriers on the bridge when the wind generated by a speeding truck left me wobbling as I walked across.

The Camino does a dogleg into and out of Portomarin, having pilgrims cross that same river again on a different, lower bridge.

Leaving the town, I encountered the first of many climbs to come throughout the day.

The Camino paralleled the road at times, and it was fun to wave at Allan’s taxi when he passed by around 11:30 a.m. Along other parts of the Way, I saw tractors working the fields as well as some lumber harvesting.

After 26 kilometers, my feet were ready to call it quits when I reached today’s lodging: El Rectoral de Lestedo.

Allan is feeling better, so tomorrow we’ll set out to walk 20 kilometers to Melide, knowing that a taxi can be procured along the Way if need be.
