Day 27 Ferreira to Melide 578 km

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

OK today was the worst weather I have walked so far this trip.
It poured with rain and wind for 3 1/2 hours. There was nowhere to stop until 15km. I powered through it listening to Carrie Underwood. 💪 The saving grace was that it was relatively flat so I could pick up my pace to just over 13 min/ km.

At one point I saw 3 pilgrims huddled in the middle of the road.....I thought there might be a problem but no....they were taking a smoke break😅

Very muddy and water flowing everywhere! Reminded me of hiking on the West Coast Trail😂🤣 Except more road walking.
Not many pictures because of the weather.

When I did stop at the bar my gang was all there happy to see one another and complain about the weather. Some were actually hypothermic which was not good at all.
I saw Claudia again she was freezing. I luckily had 2 layers of my merino wool long sleeved tops which really worked well👍

After my break the rain stopped and the sun came out for a brief while.

Coming into Melide you could see a lot of Pilgrims. You had to be super careful on the roads as the drivers DO NOT YIELD TO Pilgrims😱😡

I met a lovely couple from Montana.
AND John is here!! He made great time. So nice to check in with him again. He gave me the link to his hiking group in Taiwan on the Meet up site

I am staying at the same Albergue that I stayed at last year. It is wonderful🤗

Just chilling now. There is a Pilgrims service at 8 pm that I am going to try and go to.

My wet boots created a few more blisters for me 😳

Anja sent me a pic of a baby burro. I will include it😍

So I have officially completed the Primitivo👏😂💪
But I am sad😥 as it was really spectacular🥳

      Day 41-Melide

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

It rained during all but the last hour of our 12+ mile walk. It wasn't bad on the pavement but half the time we were on a dirt trail the turned into a dirt river with thick, mucky mud. I slipped at one point and landed on one knee. No real injury, just a dirty knee and a small cut on my hand.

A highlight of the day was meeting an American couple that moved to Spain five years ago. Kelli blogs about their life in Spain and just published a book that is set on the Camino. I was able to get a signed copy from her and we all had a great chat.

Then we trudged along several more miles in the rain. We didn't take many pictures because it was raining too hard so the ones you see are pretty tame. I'm proud that we toughed it out and walked every step. We saw a huge group of pilgrims waiting for a bus.

We're expecting more of the same tomorrow.

    • Day 41 - Palas de Rei to Melide - 16km

      October 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

20, 23, 10. “Huh”, you say “what are these numbers about Julie?” Those are the number of Kilometres I am doing over the next three days to reach Santiago. Unbelievable, in 3 days this will be done. I am so looking forward to it being done and if you ask any of the crowd I walk with that started in Saint Jean, they feel the same.

The funny thing is, as much as I want it to be done, it is more because I am ready for it to be done, not because I am sick of it and want it to be over. About a day or two before Sarria, I realized I have a sort of peace about me. I really think there is a better word for it, but I can’t think of it at this moment. I feel lighter, easy going, not so worried are a few other words to describe it. In fact, the feeling is so deep that the Sarria crowd does not bother me. I enjoy seeing all the different people and know that they have their own reasons for doing the camino. I have just chalked this up to a different part of the camino. Just like the Pyrenees, the Meseta, the big cities and the 100k people.

Last night I went to dinner with Rachel. Very sweet 19 year old girl from the US but is going to school in Sweden right now. We had some good chats and she struggles with what she wants to do with life (Something we all struggle with at some point).

Everyone has their own reason for doing the camino, even if they don’t know it. There are a lot of people who are here because it is a very cool hiking trip. I have no resentment there, it is true, it is a very cool hiking trip and doing 100km in 5 days is no easy task and most people cannot do that, so it is great they are challenging themselves. I explained to a few people, including Rachel, that yes, I am doing the camino this time in memory and honour of Jörg but when we did the camino the first time in 2009, it was really because it was a cool hiking trip across Spain. I had read some camino books, and understood the spiritual side and there was hope that something would change (and of course it did, my dear Jörg moved to Canada), but it wasn’t the initial driving force to do the walk.

Ok, enough about my thoughts and feelings, on to tell you about my day. I had a TERRIBLE sleep in the albergue. The albergue was nice, and no major snorers or people disturbing us, but the heat was unbearable. The people sleeping next to the windows had closed them and the room was an oven. I was on a top bunk so the heat was rising and there was nothing I could do to cool down. I actually have a fan, but it is too loud to use in the middle of the night. At one point I went down to the basement lounge to cool off. At about 6am, with hardly any sleep, I decided it was time for a hotel room. And I wanted a real hotel room, not a pension, not a Casa Rural, but an actual hotel. I found a 3 star hotel (extreme luxury in camino terms) that had a sale, and the room was going for 55 Euros. I snapped that one up. I am sitting in the room right now, writing this at a desk with the air conditioning on and looking out to the park across the street through my floor to ceiling windows. (I will attach photos of course!)

I walked alone for about 5km and then ran into Peggy (from New Hampshire) so we walked the rest of the way together into town (16km in total). She was going another 5km, so we had ice cream and then parted, but I am sure we will run into each other again.

After showering, I met up with Matt for a drink which was nice and we had a good chat. It is sooooo very hot still so it was time for me to get back to my air conditioning while I have it.

They have a buffet dinner here at the hotel at 7:30, and I first thought I would treat myself (I don’t even know how much it is), but I am so enjoying just relaxing in the room, that I think I might just survive on my nuts and treats in my bag. We will see. I probably should have something, but they also offer a breakfast, so maybe I skip dinner and just have a great breakfast. Oh, how tough these decisions are.

Before I go, I thought I should give you an update on my bed bug problem. I have not had any new bites. I have a feeling I just got bit that one night, but they didn’t hitch a ride with me. I am still keeping everything separate in my bag, and have decided when I get to Santiago, I will wash everything again, and empty my backpack and leave it in the sun for a couple hours in a black garbage bag (that is the famous trick to killing them and their eggs.)

Ok, going to go put my feet up and watch a little TV.

      Camino Day 26 - Melide

      September 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Late start today, around 9am, as Rod and Hollie are carrying a bit of tendinitis in legs and feet. A slow day, but nice as we made our way to Melide.
A bit of fog and mist but mostly sunny and cool.
Had to stop for octopus at the "best pulpo me Way" according to the guys cooking it the front. It was pretty good and the place was packed..
Our albergue was a bit out of the main town so we ordered pizza and settled down with a bottle of red and played cards till bed.

      Getting closer

      August 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

I forgot to post last night, so this is a double post. Yesterday I walked from Portomarin to Eirexe. Eirexe was a tiny stop along the way with an albergue and a restaurant across the street without much of a town. I decided to stop early to do fewer km and to stay “off stage” (aka not stopping at the primary towns dictated by the stages in the guidebooks).

Leaving Portomarin yesterday morning was my first taste of the big crowds everyone describes joining at the end. It was a constant stream of people ahead and behind with that same hurried energy from the beginning of the trail. There must be some psychological principle that makes people feel like they’re racing when they’re in a crowd.

Today I walked 14 miles from Eirexe to Melide. This was my last longest walking day - everyday after this is shorter than what I did today.

I’m glad to be getting close to Santiago and glad to be coming to a close with this experience. My body feels stronger than it did at the beginning, but emotionally I feel drained from the effort it has taken to sustain myself. I’m looking forward to being back in the comforts of home and back to the bountiful harvest of fresh vegetables available from our local farms.

      Three more days before Santiago.

      Pulperia Garnacha (octopus tavern)

      June 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

This is the place to go for octopus or Pulpo.

I had Pulpo de La plancha, grilled with potato’s, olive oil, chives and Bierzo paprika

Different texture. It’s chewy if mishandled/overcooked. Done correctly, it’s sort of like a dense filet mignon?. There are two distinct layer: one thin on the surface maybe 2-3 mm which includes the suction cups. This is best lightly crisped. Below that a much thicker layer, circular around the axial axis of the tentacle.

You tenderize the inner layer by cutting pieces along a tangential axis, thinner slice = more tender, kind of like with corned beef

      78. Wandertag

      June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

    • Day 44

      Melide

      October 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Day 40 - Today and tomorrow are shorter walks. Since I didn’t take a rest day in Sarria I decided to break this 28 km stage into two. It was an easy walk (9 miles) and I bumped into this guy who I’ve met 3 or 4 times and each time he compliments me on my shoes (he has the same kind) and calls me India. I say ‘Brazil, right?’’And he says ‘No - Venezuela’. And then I say - ‘but you live in Canada’ - and he says - ‘No, Australia’. We both laugh at my good memory!
Melide is a decent sized town and has a local population of 7,500. Three Camino routes from the north come together in this town - Camino Frances, Camino Del Norte and Camino Primitivo. This means that the crowds have grown even more and it’s harder to find rooms and beds. Three of us (Ginny, Steve and I) are sharing a hotel room. The room costs €80, so each of us pays a third of that. We have booked apartments for the next two nights, until we get to Santiago. After that I am splurging and getting my own hotel room.
On the Camino, the goal is to pay as little as possible for the night so that the pilgrimage is more meaningful. In the past I’ve stayed in dorms that have 4 - 10 people and a bed costs as little as €10. A couple of times there have been some heavy snorers, that’s when my one deaf ear comes into good use. But each time it was a very pleasant experience because those albergues had a really good communal dinner and I met a lot of fun people from different countries. Now that I’m nearing the end of the pilgrimage and the crowds have grown humongous, I’ve thrown in the towel and pre-booked hotels/apartments till Santiago.
More tomorrow from next stop - Arzua….

      Melide

      November 6, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C
