    Pasajes to San Sebastion

    July 10 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Slow start this morning, still recovering from the first pdays vertical challenges. Yesterday, when we dragged our dehydrated and exhausted butts off the mountain, we took a cab from the Pasajes town center to our hotel. We took a bus back to where we left off walking to avoid the sin of “cheating”. Also we wanted to ride the cute little ferry across the harbor to the other Pasajes. A landslide has closed off the start of the Camino trail to San Sebastián, so we detoured through town, and joined others on a scramble up an overgrown trail that went (of course!) STRAIGHT UP!! We caught back up with the trail on top and had more great vistas as we left town. The trail continues along the side of the mountains with frequent spectacular views of the ocean breaking on the rocks far below and the unusual uplifted sandstone geology. As trails along mountains do, there were many ups and downs. Where the day before was all UP and then all DOWN, this day was a continuous series of smaller climbs and descents. Does the phrase “death by a thousand cuts” ring any bells here? By the end of the day we are both hobbling. Over dinner in San Sebastián we considered our options. No question we are going to layover a day and recover. After that, maybe jump ahead past the worst section of the Camino Norte, maybe move inland and pick up the Camino Frances. We have seen a beautiful and unique countryside and are enjoying our walk. We will adapt and change our plans and goals if we need to. It’s all good. Buen Camino!Read more

    First taste of the Camino

    September 7, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Just a short 6km walk today to break us into the Camino - Pasaia back to San Sebastián. Beautiful views of the coast with lots of lovely locals and their dogs. So relaxing just following our trusty yellow arrows which mark the Camino.

Last night we stayed at our first dorm. We had to stay in separate rooms which was lucky in the end as Simon had 4 snorers in his room. He was right at home there. I just had heavy Darth Vader breathing to fall asleep to. Considering we got in last night at almost midnight I would have slept through anything!

Read more

    A coastal walk in Espanol

    June 9, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

A walk from Pasaia to San Sebastian takes us along a section of the Northern Camino.
We start with a ferry shuttle to a cute area of Pasaia and a lunch of gigantic sardines.
Less than 3 hours round the coast we pop out onto the main beach front of San Sebastian city. Big, old city with impressive colonial buildings, pedestrian alleyways and numerouse tapas and pinxos bars.Read more

    Alto de Jaizkibel

    July 10, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

San Sebastian Day 4 Trip to Pasaia

    May 27, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

With no car now, we decided to take a day trip to Pasaia in the bus. This is another little inlet hamlet about 6 kilometres from SS. The day started a bit drizzly and stayed much the same all day. As we got to Pasaia we were stopped by a local street parade. Had a great view of it all from the back of the bus. When we got off the bus there were crowds of people being a Sunday. We were surprised to find a three masted sailing ship in the harbour. The Hermione is an exact replica ship and was quite spectacular. The queue to get the bum boat to the other side of the harbour was too long so we walked up to the harbour mouth then back for a bite at a little restaurant. The little village across the inlet is just perched on one road at the base of a hill. Victor Hugo was once a resident and there is a small museum to him there. It was quite entertaining watching the passing parade of Spanish day trippers many of whom take their dogs on or off their leads. In fact the Spanish seem to be great dog lovers and have them even despite the apartment living. Most of these dogs are small breeds but not all so it must get cosy at home. Anyway, it is great to see and testimony to the nice nature's of the Spanish in general.Read more

Read more
