    • Cacabelos to Trabadelo

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

An 18km day in cool cloudy conditions. A great walk today.

We didn’t leave till just after 8am, correctly predicting that there might be a bar open by then. So we had a good breakfast before hitting the road.

The walk was in 2 halves.

First half through beautiful undulating vineyard country. Just a lovely few hours to Villafranca del Bierzo.

Along the way we found the plant that is so pleasantly aromatic. Seems to be wild fennel that grows like a weed here.

Villafranca del Bierzo is a beautiful town, at the confluence of the Burbia and Valcarce rivers, surrounded by very steep mountains.

We had coffee there and bought sandwiches to go, for a later lunch along the track.

The second half was all along a little used road that followed closely the Valcarce river upstream toward the north-west all the way to Trabadelo. All the way we could hear the burbling sound of the rapidly flowing stream, never more than 15 meters away. We stopped to eat our sandwich in a very quiet village called Pereje.

After reaching Trabadelo and getting settled we were very pleasantly surprised to bump into Lisa from Portland whom we had met on the first day back in the Pyrenees and a for few days after that. We’d assumed she was days ahead but it turns out she became quite ill with a lung infection way back in Estella. Some days in hospital and a few slow days of recovery meant she had just now caught up with us.

We all had a good yarn and will likely dine together in O Cebreiro tomorrow, assuming we survive the climb of about 900m.

Good dinner and early night tonight. We’re in the Pensión El Puente Peregrino which is very good.

The Danish “Team Camino” are also here with their valiant little doggo.

      La Faba

      October 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Such a nice day! The standard stage would have been 5 K longer, and a long steep climb. We opted to stop partway up after a walk through beautiful scenery in intermittent showers and gusts of warm wind. We were often accompanied by the music of full rivers and the sound and smell of wind shaken autumn leaves.

I walked the day alone, soaking up all the sensory goodness. Morgan caught up as I sat in front of a cafe watching other pilgrims come around the corner and we had lunch together waiting for a break in the rain before heading back out.

Our albergue is a nice one, with a beautiful little church right on the grounds , and a statue of Santiago in his pilgrim garb. Further on in the village is Tito’s, where along with David and Ollie we had a very convivial evening meal. We did get rather soaked coming back to the albergue. We may be walking in rain for the rest of the camino.

For tonight, though, we are warm and dry, listening to the rain fall and preparing to sleep. And for the record, I managed to keep upright all day today. Another good day on the Camino.

      Las Herrerias - Albergue Miriam

      October 9, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We started the morning by completely repacking our backpacks after we emptied them yesterday. I wasn't in a huge hurry since we had a shorter distance to go. No sign of the crazy man anywhere. Mia and Maria walked super fast and reached the albergue long before Isabel and I did. We walked around and saw the horses we'll ride tomorrow. We're in the final week of this adventure.

      October 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Read more

      Ein absoluter Albtraum

      October 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

      Herbergenwechsel

      October 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Camino Day 29: Villafranca to Trabadelo

      September 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      Total Distance: 13km
      Step Count: 21.6k
      Blisters to date: 2
      Tortillas to date: 22
      Injuries: shin splints

While today was a very short day, it was all up on the mountains! Nothing like a bit of a sleep in and a steep climb to get the day going. The walk itself was simply stunning!

On our way, we had a long break at the top of the mountain and then another one in Pradela, a cute little village where we enjoyed a delicious lunch (omelette as there was no tortilla) and played with the cutest kittens and cats! So many stray cats in Spain 🥺 I also bought some blueberry jam 😋

We barely saw one other person on the trail and loved having the mountains all to ourselves. It was all blue skies and sunshine until like 2km before our destination when it started to drizzle.

The day before, Lukas was being all infects out whether he wanted to stay at Trabadelo or keep going to Las Herrerías so he could do a stretch horseback riding. I was hoping to stay at Casa Susi, a very small Albergue (10-12 beds) established by an Aussie woman who has a beautiful and inspiring life and love story (feel free to ask me about it). It’s one of those stories that make you believe more than ever in the magic of the Camino! ✨

When I called to book my bed, there was only 1 left and I took it as Lukas was uncertain as to what he’d do. They said that if he stayed in town he could still join the communal dinner and that they’d call me if any cancellations (very slim chance).

So we are on our way and Lukas decides to stay in town. One hour later, I receive a call about a cancellation and just like that a bed at the Albergue had become available. Coincidence? Camino magic? I prefer to believe the latter and so did Lukas when he finally and wholeheartedly manifested he wanted to stay there. 🏡

The Albergue was so beautiful with a huge veggie garden which is used to make the communal dinners for pilgrims, access to the river, and the closest thing I ever got to having a “private” room in a shared dorm!

The dinner was one of the most fun nights we had to date, the food was unbelievably delicious and we befriended the whole lot on the table! Everyone went around sharing their story and why they were there. The rest of the night was filled with funny tales (anyone know much about the witches of Pamplona?), so much laughter and finding out that all the Aussies on the table (like 8 of us including the Albergue owners) we’ll be reuniting in January in the Blue Mountains! ⛰️

      Day 29: To Trabadelo

      June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

I left Camponaraya and it wasn’t long before it was obvious, I was back in a wine region. The surrounding vineyards made for a beautiful hike. Before 10am, I was in the town of Cacabelos and stoped for a cup of coffee, then continued past more vineyards before walking through the city of Villafranca del Bierzo and then on to Trabadelo for the night. My albergue in Trabadelo; “Casa Susi” was the only albergue I booked literally months in advance because of the wonderful things I had heard about their place and hospitality. It was a treat! Additionally, it was a great surprise when I discovered that four of my Camino family were also staying there! Tomorrow I’m on to O’Cebreiro, the last mountain I need to climb on the Camino.Read more
