      For my father

      14. syyskuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Since the cost of gas is interesting to old & young men alike.

€6.60 per gallon which works out to about $7.04 per gallon.

All this for a country with an average salary of €27,000 per year / $28.8k.

Spain is a poor country by comparison to the United States. Walking through these small pueblas populated mostly by aging senior citizens, it's easier to understand why Spain offers golden visas to Americans who will buy real estate and move their retirement accounts here. I for one have had enough of Spain. As we enter our final week here, I'm relieved. Any romantic illusions about life in Spain or Europe are destroyed. I have been to Spain and Europe many times, but I'm struck this trip with how remarkably backward Europe is. They want to hold on to the status quo at the expense of growth and change. They are pouring billions into innovation with the hope of growing the EU economy through entrepreneurship and start ups and it's never going to work. When you focus your entire life around avoiding risk and discomfort, you cultivate a life of mediocrity. In the US there is no safety net - there is a remarkably high risk/reward factor. It's not right versus wrong; it's simply a choice on a spectrum where no matter what you choose brings pros and cons. For me, I don't want to live in a country where risk aversion & maintaining the status quo are more valued than growth, change and risk taking. This is how America put a man on the moon using less technology than found on an iPhone 60 years ago while the 2023 EU is focused standardizing mobile phone chargers on USB-C.

I don't mean to suggest America > Europe because it's really more about what you value. I will say the average American has zero appreciation for what an utterly unique and privileged place they call home. They'd do well to learn from Europeans some self awareness and humility. But I do mean to say that I want to live in a place where growth, innovation and change are valued more than anything else.

      Hospital de Orbigo to Astorga

      8. lokakuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

What a difference a day makes!
After yesterday's boring slog, today was a different walk entirely.
The wonderful man at our hotel provided us with a simple breakfast ( usual croissant but heated!) Coffee and orange juice and off we set again to a beautiful morning. With the sun rising behind us the light was warm and almost casting a reddish hue. All the fatigue of yesterday's walk forgotten. As we were leaving a hard case Irish woman asked us if we were shaking in our boots referring to the big win Ireland had over Scotland. We replied cheekily that we were not a bit worried!
A German girl from Berlin walked with us for awhile and everyone in good spirits. We saw livestock for the first time in a while and even cows that had been milked and goats and a few cattle. One village we passed through had a group. of men and their beagles getting ready for a pig hunt . We were just pleased it wasn't something out of Hunger Games! Lee in his orange top would have been a target!
The country was undulating hills and had some lovely shade at times from groves of holm oaks and other vegetation. The villages we passed through seemed more affluent then the dire ones of yesterday and the odd new house had been built and even some rose gardens.
We had coffee in a plain cafe after about 15 km and soaked up the Sunday morning atmosphere with locals enjoying the cafe culture. In the middle of nowhere there was a stall of food and coffee and for a donation we could help ourselves. The lovely German girl running it was shelling chestnuts and then going to make praline. She had a gorgeous big mastiff dog who had to be tied up as he would follow pilgrims to Astorga. The girl had a slight bohemian persona and was going to stay all winter there in a caravan. Apparently it gets downto -10 in winter.
      Today was 28 C.
On we walked and the day was getting hotter but far in the distance we could see the city of Astorga with the Cathedral standing out against the blue sky.
After a bit of a hot walk through the pavements of Astorga we came to Wendy's hotel and 3 gorgeous woman were there to greet us. The reception lady used Google translate to give us all the info and couldn't have been more helpful even finding a bed for Bill tomorrow night in Foncebadon. The rooms are great and we even have a sofa, a rare luxury. When we told them we didn't want
breakfast in the morning as we wanted to get away early, the ladies were most upset so talked us into staying for that.
Then it was down to the square near the cathedral and it was buzzing with all the locals out in their finery enjoying long lunches.
There is a big Gaudi influence here and of course the magnificent Cathedral which dates from the 15th century. We have yet to visit the cathedral as the pull of beers rose and food overtook us.
So now it is rest time and we will venture out in the early evening to explore this pretty city.
We also need to attempt to vote but proving harder then we thought.
Love all your messages and support and it seems a long time for you to be following this adventure. We are still laughing though and enjoying the slow pace of life where all you are worrying about is the path ahead of you. 262 km to go and have walked 528 km.
      Buen camino

      23. lokakuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Getting far too lax about this walking business - left at 10am and even had a mid-way beer stop 😂 And as iff after a loong sodden stretch a tent just materialised with a fire and a whole donation-based FEAST laid out! Had a bowl of two types of fancy granola with coconut and rice milk. Would have squeezed my own orange juice but my hands were so numb didn't think I'd have the motor function. Then conquered the most fun bridge so far - basically a rollercoasterLue lisää

      My way to Astorga

      20. elokuuta 2022, Espanja ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Sorry to my English followers but , today I will write in German for a reason!

We trekked 20 miles today- cooler weather, feet are little achy, good time to put them up and blog. A little background about Orbigo: in 1432 a woman snubbed a knight. In order for him to be released from his prison of love and restore his honor, he had to joust and break 300 lances, near the Orbigo bridge. He succeed in his task, his honor restored, (get over it, already), and the old Roman bridge still stands, today. Signs seen along the way, since the beginning of the Camino: Castilla is crossed off many signs, signifying Leon's desire for autonomy; cute gender neutral shower/ bathroom signs; art in the park; two who met their demise in the Pamplona, Running of the Bulls; an invitation to my quilting sisters; good rules for any household; mural outside of a school; outside pooping area instructions for humans, you dog owners know the drill 😂; Socrates was right- the second bar WAS better😁; Just check out the name of the second bar!; Isn't it a shame that the free parking is perpetually Full? Oh wait, Full is the name of the hardware store!; An example of how the Basque language is so different from Spanish. I'll SIGN off for now. Love to you all!Lue lisää

      La flecha

      12. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Buen Camino!

      Tonight’s Stay - Albergue Verde

      29. huhtikuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

My favorite albergue so far ! The hosts were so kind and welcoming ! We were given REAL, freshly washed sheets and a blanket upon arrival, which is a rarity. There’s a beautiful outdoor space with hammocks, picnic tables, friendly dogs, a greenhouse, and yoga studios ! We were offered a yoga class, dinner, and breakfast all in exchange for an anonymous donation/whatever we had (I’ve met a few pilgrims who are surviving on donations).Lue lisää
