Goodbye Gotland

Heute habe ich mich entscheiden, wieder aufs Festland zurück zukehren. Ziemlich spontan buchte ich um 15.30 in Visby die Fähre und um 16.30 befand ich mich bereits auf dem Weg zurück nach Oskarshamn. Aus diesem Grund konnte ich Visby, die mittelalterliche Hansenstadt, nur sehr kurz anschauen.

Nun liege ich im Zelt, etwa einen Kilometer ausserhalb der Stadt. Es hat mich voll erwischt. Im Moment als ich das Zelt aufstellen wollte begann es heftig zu Schneeregnen. In voller Eile stellte ich das Zelt auf und verkroch mich mit samt meinen Taschen darin. Inzwischen ist es wieder ruhig und ich bin im warmen Schlafsack eingekuschelt, alles gut.☺

Bei solchen Situationen frage ich mich schon manchmal, was das ganze hier eigentlich soll. Auch auf Gotland, als es den ganzen Tag regnete war es manchmal schwierig Motivation zu finden. Am Mittwoch habe ich es erst um 14.00 Uhr aus dem Zelt geschafft😅. Aber ich denke, solche "Krisen" sind normal wenn man für längere Zeit unterwegs ist und irgendwie sind es auch genau die Momente, wo man sich selbst am besten kennenlernt. 😁Read more

Sehr früh machten wir uns auf die Fahrt nach Oskarshamn, wo wir die Fähre nach Visby auf Gotland nahmen. Leider spielte das Wetter heute nicht so wirklich mit, es ist zwar immer noch angenehm warm, allerdings regnet es immer wieder. So natürlich auch beim Aufbauen des Zeltes, Klassiker. Außer einem kurzen Abstecher in die Alstadt von Visby und zu Lidl unternahmen wir heute eigentlich nichts mehr. Nun liegen wir zu viert wie die Ölsardinen im Zelt. Von unserem Platz aus können wir das Meer in etwa 50m Entfernung hören und sehen, wir hoffen dass wir morgen bei besserem Wetter auch wieder mehr unternehmen können. Jetzt darf Lukas noch eine Folge Pippi Langstrumpf schauen (wurde hier gedreht) und dann geht ja schon um 3:52 die Sonne wieder auf 😜.Read more

Letzter Tag auf Gotland

Schon ist der letzte Tag auf Gotland. Morgens habe ich die Fähre zurück von Fårö genommen, noch ein paar Zwischenstops gemacht und nachmittags dann Visby angeschaut.
Es war nicht so voll wie befürchtet und Visby ist wirklich eine schöne Stadt, mit kleinen mittelalterlichen Gassen, Kirchenruinen, alter Stadtmauer und ganz vielen Cafés, Restaurants, Kneipen und Läden. Mit etwas mehr Zeit wäre ich gerne irgendwo eingekehrt.
Heute Abend geht die Fähre zurück nach Västervik. Da sie relativ spät ankommt, werde ich wohl wieder den gleichen Stellplatz wie auf dem Hinweg ansteuern.Read more

Ankunft auf Gotland und Besuch Visbys

Nach der durchwachsenen Nacht kamen wir gegen 06:00 Uhr auf Gotland an, um uns auf direktem Weg in die historische Altstadt Visbys zu begeben. Hier durften wir noch menschenleere Gassen erkunden, bis um 8:00 Uhr die ersten Cafés ihre Türen öffneten. Als Belohnung gab es unter anderem einen Safranspannkaka in malerischer Umgebung bewachsener Ruinen.
Nach einer kurzweiligen Freewalking Tour durch Visby wurden der überschaubare Schlaf und das frühe Aufstehen immer präsenter und wir haben uns zu unserem Campingplatz im Süden der Insel begeben, wo wir unsere erste Nacht des Urlaubs im "Freien", bzw. unserem Dachzelt verbracht haben.Read more

Et voilà, on se choppe la pluie pour la première fois ! Et quelle rincée, il y a eu au moins trois gouttes ! Ça ne nous arrête pas et on s'arme de courage et de vestes de pluie pour se rendre à Visby. Nous nous rendons à pied en ville, en passant par le bord de mer. Une fois à Visby, nous admirons les nombreuses ruines, il y en a partout ! Visite du musée Viking, petit pique-nique et retour au camping car par la jungle (réserve naturelle). Ensuite, nous reprenons la route pour trouver un bel endroit où dormir.

Zum ersten mal regnet es ! Was für ein Unwetter, es gab mindestens drei Tropfen ! Das hält uns nicht auf und wir bewaffnen uns mit Mut und Regenjacken. Anschliessend machen wir uns auf den Weg nach Visby. Wir gehen zu Fuss in die Stadt via Meeresküste. Wir bewunderten die vielen Ruinen die es zu sehen gab ! Danach, besuchten wir ein Wikigermuseum. Wir geniessen ein kleines Picknick und kehren zum Womo zurück über einen Urwald (ein Naturreservat). Anschliessend suchen wir einen neuen Schlafplatz.Read more

Swedish crayfish party today

Tonight we will be having a traditional Swedish crayfish party - with decorations and drinking songs - should be fun.

First we have to go to the museum. Gotland has a history of violence, poverty, prosperity and political fighting.

Gotland is a 3,140 km2 island in the Baltic sea, about 90 km from the Swedish coast and 130 km from the Estonian coast. It currently has about 58,003 inhabitants (20,000 in the main city, Visby). Gotland is a beautiful island and it receives about 500,000 visitors each year. Farming is also prevalent on the island. There are many small businesses; in fact, 99% of the businesses on Gotland employ fewer than 20 people.

It has been inhabited by people for somewhere between 8000 and 6000 years (depending on the source). Farming was the first business to develop and, by the Viking Age, Gotland was a major trade center in Northern Europe. About half of the 20,000 Viking Age silver coins found in Sweden were discovered on Gotland.

Gotland, initially an independent sovereign entity, fell under German rule in 1398, Danish rule in 1408, Swedish rule in 1645, Danish rule again in 1676, and ended up as part of Sweden in 1679, with a brief 23-day occupation by the Russians in 1808.

Interestingly, when Gotland fell under Swedish rule, it did so as the result of peace treaties, whereas other countries' means of obtaining it were generally not peaceful.

For dinner, Grace prepared a traditional Crayfish meal - with Crayfish [of course], pickled herring,salads, breads, cheeses, potato, cheese tart, the list goes on. We were joined by Grace's Australian friend, Sheona Urquhart [ex Neighbours star] and her family - Victorians, but they were okay still, [they were great fun really!].

Tomorrow we go to church in the morning then pack in the afternoon - ready to fly home on Monday.

The city wall

It is a nice walk into the walled city. The Ringmur (city wall) stretches 3.5K and encircles Visby. Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on Gotland, a Swedish Island. Getting Kroner is easy at the ATM. This is a pretty place with everything you need. A very large ferry was in dock as we arrived. There are quite a few cars for an island and of course bicycles.Read more

Hello there, sorry I didn't see your post until today. Yes we did go to Stockholm and spent the day touring until our flight home that evening. There was so much to see and so little time.

Wir sind etwas traurig, denn heute legt unser Schiff das letzte mal auf unserer sehr schönen Reise an. Der nächste Hafen bringt uns dann schon wieder in heimatliche Gefilde.
Heute sind wir aber erst einmal in Visby auf Gotland. Wir hatten, als wir die Buchungsunterlagen studiert haben festgestellt, dass man wohl hier auch mal auf eigene Faust auf Erkundigung gehen könne. Also haben wir keine Führung gebucht.
Als dann die zeit gekommen war, ging es für uns aufs Festland und in die Stadt. Es ist eine schöne alte Stadt mit Stadtmauer, Ruinen und vielem mehr...Read more

Friday - Geelong lost - the end!

I suppose I should say more about today ... the girls are talking about going shopping, great, I'll stay here and listen to the Geelong v Richmond final - should have gone shopping!

Gotland is very much a holiday island - lots of tourists and locals who have summer homes here. It is raining today and expect the winter would be very cold - but it has a great holiday vibe.

The hotel we have is very old and has a mix of medieval, old and modern fittings - its really interesting and welcoming. I think I have mentioned before how comfortable beds are in Sweden - no problems sleeping here.

The bottle shops are government controlled - no advertising and they close early. I went for a walk and bought a bottle of Gotland Whisky called "Isle of Lime" it's made here in Roma and is a good single malt. I also bought a box of New Zealand white wine and local beer - mainly for our party tomorrow night.

For dinner we wanted to try a Thai restaurant - but it was fully booked, so we went to a French Restaurant - funny thing to have foods from other countries located here in Gotland. Anyway, the French Restaurant was brilliant - I had Pork Belly with sauerkraut and the girls had lamb shanks. It is nice to have meat and three veggies after travelling and eating so much local food - don't think I need another fish and chips for a long time.

I hope the rain stops soon - tomorrow we plan to go to the museum and the church - that should give us a good history lesson of Gotland.

Going to Gotland

Today we head to Gotland, Sweden's largest island. Gotland is about twice the size of Flinders Island and has a population of 53,003 approx. Its in the middle of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Latvia.

We decided to walk [with about 54kg total in baggage] to the bus station. We had checked it out last night and knew where to go. Grace was waiting for us at the top of the stairs and off we went. It's about a one hour bus trip to the port of Nynäshamn. That was very pleasant - although I think I had a little sleep on the bus - getting good at sleeping on trains & planes.

No problem getting onto the ferry, although the baggage check-in lady did raise her eye brows when we put through our cases.

We decided to sit at a table in the dining area rather than the aircraft seats for the three hour ferry trip - better for conversation and having a meal - I had Swedish meatballs again - yummy.

Visby it the capital of Gotland. It has an old walled city centre with many medieval buildings and ruins. The old part of the city is where we are staying, and because it is mainly cobble stones, we decided to take a taxi - it only cost 100kr [about $16].

Where we are staying is a private hotel owned by one of Grace's business partners. It is built on medieval foundations from around 1200AD with the main building dating back to around the 16th century.

We have the hotel to ourselves - Grace, Mary and Me. The owners are away !!

Walking around the old city we went past many restaurants and eateries - but its not cheap, at one bar I have a local stout and Mary & Grace had Aperoal Spritz which all up cost $54. Grace then took us to a gourmet burger bar - Brooklyn Burgers - and we had what Mary called the best burger ever!!

I think our little holiday in Gotland is going to be fantastic. Tomorrow we hire a car and explore the island.
