      Bern

      22 juli 2022, Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The journey from Freiburg to Bern was a 2hr hop, changing in Basel. Mercifully the train we needed to change on to was on the adjoining platform as we only had 8 minutes for the change and our first train was 6 minutes late! We had enough time to change trains and sit down before the second train left.

In Bern, the first tram we got ended up going the wrong way due to roadworks, so we ended up having to get a bus - however, it was all very simple, and free with your hotel reservation!

We wandered the old centre under the baking midday heat, taking in the Einstein Haus, Parliament and beautiful streets and statues throughout. The Aare River is a beautiful colour with lots of people drifting down the fast current...something we may try if we have time! Next to the river is the Barengraben, or bear pits, which has apparently housed bears for since 1857.

      River Aare

      22 juli 2022, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After a brief bit of respite in the hotel, we decided to do as the locals do and drift/swim down the River Aare. The severe river meander creates the boundaries of the old town and allowed you to float along sublime sights and bridges. Alas, our dry bag, Bob, had apparently developed a slow puncture so we had to purchase another one in town. The river was initially a bit chilly but once in it was superb. The flow was pretty impressive, and so long as you can float its a relatively simple float along the river with lots of other people. We hopped out before the Lorraine Baths, dried off and headed into town to experience the locals beers.

Bern has a great craft beer scene. We stopped at the Alte Tram Depot, with glorious views over the old town, and then OnTap before decamping to a bar more local to our hotel. On the walk home, we were treated to an impromptu street gig by The Live Jukebox, with an incredible singing voice before a huge lightning storm took over the night sky.

      Bern

      5 maj 2023, Schweiz ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      Hei hei 😌
Dane sva poležala kar malo dlje saj sva spanec nujno potrebovala.

      Biking in Bern

      17 juni 2023, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We had fun getting guided by Maria and the boys for the first 5 km of our ride out of Spiez. We then enjoyed rolling through forested paths to the town of Thun. More well-developed bike trails took us to Bern as we followed the vibrant turquoise waters of the Aare River. Despite the cobblestone streets, we had fun exploring the old city centre by bike and were impressed by all the cyclists and the variety in cargo and kid-carrying bikes. We had organized another Warmshowers stay in Bern, and were thrilled to meet Bubu, Haci and their 3-year old daughter Ronya. Bubu lived in New York for 7 years while in university so she spoke excellent English, while Haci had emigrated from Turkey to Switzerland and only spoke high German - perfect for Karl to get a break and get to talk in English, and Holly to find the German she learned 25 years ago while on exchange in Berlin, tucked away in the back of her head behind the other languages learned since then... With the hot weather, Bubu and Haci took us to an outdoor pool by their appartment, apparently the largest outdoor public swimming pool in Western Europe. And to travel in comfort, Holly got to try their e-bike to pull Claire in a Chariot! Bubu cooked us up a feast of delicious Turkish dishes, the girls tried to escape bedtime (such similar characters!) and we chatted late into the night about bike touring, immigration, languages, and politics - all in all it was a great day!Läs mer

      Die Stadt Bern

      25 juni 2023, Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Bern

      18 januari, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

After a short trip to Bern from Interlaken, we arrived too early to check into our accommodation. So, we went exploring. This started with the parliament building. An incredibly impressive building with an even nicer view of the old city. After this, we walked across the Aare river to see the Einstein Museum. Although not entering, it was still a cool building with an interesting statue, Welttelegrafen-Denkmal, commemorating the importance of communication and remembrance out the front. We then continued our walk back across the river to see the main attraction of the old town. The city has three roads that date back as late as the 12th century when the city was first formed. This is reflected in the simplistic design of the buildings. Long rows of connected buildings, normally around 3 levels high, that would once have accommodated the whole city. The building facade, on the ground level, contained the stalls or markets that held up society in the city of Bern. The architecture is similar to the Hassmann style of architecture in Paris. The long, straight roads, with a single and constant duplex that lines the road, goes for hundreds of metres and only ends at the Nydeggkirche protestant church where the city reaches the river. Nowadays, a bridge exists in which you can cross and see the city from the hill. For today, though, we simply returned the way we came and saw the main cathedral of the city on our way back to the accommodation. The cathedral was quite impressive but quite dark and undergoing considerable renovations. Unfortunately, this meant that we could not see the main attraction of the cathedral. The roof is covered with over 100 faces, with articulate detail that makes the view incredible. We did not see any of this, but we also didn't pay any money to enter, so we can't really complain. After this, we stopped by the famous Zytglogge clock tower on our way home.Läs mer
