      Interlaken

      January 17 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Next stop was Interlaken, a relatively quick train trip under the Alps. It seemed quick, but the tunnel is 18kms long and the train is doing 200kms an hour. Love Swiss engineering.

Interlaken is in the middle of 2 massive lakes and the photo ops just kept coming.Read more

      Oberland Region

      May 26 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The alps! We decided to use Interlaken as our "base camp" for exploring the region.

We arrived mid day and decided to rent bikes and ride along Brienzersee - a blue green lake east of Interlaken. We followed along a narrow road and stopped both at Iseltwald for lunch and Giessbachfälle! The hills to the waterfall were no joke but made for a fast journey back once we turned around! A street food festival was in full swing when we arrived back in Interlaken; enjoyed a couple beer and a "sushi hotdog" before heading to the hostel to check in.

We stayed at Balmer's Hostel, which is repeatedly voted Switzerland's best hostel and is one of the oldest, opened in 1907. It consisted of 3 or 4 interconnected houses converted into shared dorms, private rooms and lots of different social spaces. They even have a club in the basement, although it wasn't open while we were there. We made fast friends with our neighbors Jay & Shiv from Manchester and signed up for the beer pong tournament that night. The hostel had a very fun and friendly atmosphere!

Day 2 we took the train to Lauterbrunnen - walking along the village streets admiring the many waterfalls! We took a cable car up to a mountain village called Grimmelwald which had spectacular views of the mountains! We walked from here to Mürren and then all the way back down to Lauterbrunnen. Sadly the rain found us for the last hour of our hike as we descended.

Day 3 - Jungfraujoch & Grindelwald. We took an early train from Interlaken to Grindelwald and hopped on the Eiger Express, we would have great views of the Eiger but the clouds were socked in low. From the Eiger Glacier we had another train which tunneled through the mountains up to Jungfraujoch, "The Top of Europe". At about 3650m (12000 feet) above sea level, we could feel the elevation instantly when we got off the train. We were rewarded with blue bird skies and unlimited views above the clouds! The station at the top was massive, with many tunnels leading to other plateau viewpoints, an ice cave and a terrace atop one of the peaks. They also use this station for scientific research at high elevation. We found the highest patio bar in Europe to enjoy the views, and also picked up some treats at the highest Lindt chocolate shop. We were tired from the early wakeup but we're so glad we took an early train as we had no wait, but there was a massive line when we got back down.

We stayed in Grindelwald for the rest of the day and took the gondolas up to First Peak. We had more beautiful views along the way of all the farms surrounded by mountains. They have a free cliff walk here which is not for the faint of heart but offered views looked down and many paragliders.

The photos are from our bike ride, the sushi “hotdog”, the hike from Mürren to lauterbrunnen, JungFrau and finally Grindelwald First

      Interlaken

      June 3 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌫 12 °C

      Interlaken Kayaking

      July 13 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We woke up early to get suitcases packed in time for the luggage transport. After breakfast, caty went back to bed while Laura and I went out to check out the Saturday market. The misty rain kept the crowds away, but we each grabbed one of the "quite large" umbrellas for ourselves and kept dry. After taking in all the veggies, flowers, and meat/cheese stands, we jaunted over to the guard towers on the northern side of the city that our tour guide had called out. We entered the Zytturm tower, and climbed up to see the old astronomical clock contained within.

Afterwards, we collected Caty and boarded our train to Interlocken, which proved to be the most scenic ride yet. The lakes all look pristine, and we spied many waterfalls spilling down from the mountains.

Once we arrived at the Interlaken train station, we took the path up towards the beach where we had a kayaking tour reserved. We met our guide, West, and the other couple that was going on the tour with us. We got fitted for our life jackets and before we knew it we were pushed off into the water. Since it had been raining really hard for the prior day, the lake was a bit stirred up but it was still Jade in color and cold from the mountain runoff. We spent two hours leisurely paddling along the lake, taking in the sights of the mountains surrounding us.

Once we made our way back to shore, we took a bus back to the train station, and then hopped back on a train to ride to Grindelwald. We checked into the hotel, and then enjoyed some welcome champagne on the room's balcony. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, where Caty and I shared a meat smorgasbord for two. The wait staff didn't think we had it in us, but we conquered it without too much difficulty.

      Nochmal Klettern mit Wahnsinnsausblick

      September 16, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      Lake Brienzersee

      January 17 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Interlaken is quite a small town, and we quickly discovered that we had managed to explore most of it yesterday afternoon, and so figured we would catch a bus to Lake Brienzersee, and enjoy the long walk back. Due to being the low season, when we got off the bus to explore the suburb along the lake, it felt more like a ghost town than anything else. We wandered around to see some of the parks that ran along the perimeter of the lake and got some photos before eventually beginning the walk back into the centre of interlaken. The walk back was amazing, and we wandered from the Brienzersee to the river Aare that runs through the town. Eventually, we arrived in the parts of town that we didn't explore yesterday that included a Japanese garden, a couple of churches, and a very old looking law school. As such, we deviated from the river and explored this part of town. Although iced over with the Koi fish frozen in place, the Japanese garden was still very nice to see and made for a nice photo with the church in the background. After this, we began to explore the churches. Both were quite modern relative to the outside and had beautiful stained glass mosaic windows that lit up the church in an amazing display of colours. We then continued our walk through the park and the main centre of Interlaken before arriving back home after a decent stint of walking. We chose to rest for the rest of the day and recover for our travel day tomorrow.Read more

      Wandertag

      August 22, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    • The Alps

      October 24, 2021 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

It was a beautiful clear crisp fall morning when we left Interlaken. Destination Lake Bled, Slovenia with a one night stop on the way. Did I mention the fall colors. WoW! We traversed the Alps for hours and hours. Every turn on the road brought another beautiful picture postcard into view. It would never get old in my opinion. If I am not mistaken we got up to over 9,000 feet above sea level.
I think we went up and down on serious elevations three times the first day. And one descent was a true nail biter. Outside lane with thousand feet drop off at the edge, no barrier and switchback after switchback. I have told a few people that this drive was better than Yellowstone with the exception of the wildlife. Unlike Yellowstone, all we saw was signs for deer but none were actually sighted.
We rested in a small town up in the Alps, just over the Austrian border called Nauders. Cosy little spot with one open restaurant where we had Pizza and rested for the next leg of the journey.

The next day we grabbed breakfast before our continued descent. Bled was the destination and no other plans until one of the guests at our accomodation told us about the town of Merano which is in Italy and where a third of the population speak German because it is so close to Austria. This was a nice find. Have to say that I would like to get back there and stay a while. Wanted to get to Bled before dark so hung around for an hour or so. Had a glass of wine and strolled along the river that seemed to wind its way through the middle of town. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g187860-Mer…

Back in the car and off to Bled. We checked in to another great find by Caroline. Best Co-pilot ever. (CE: awwww ❤️❤️) We went out for dinner to a spot that Jack and Ally recommended. Slovenian Food. Yummy but very rich. Needed a walk after. Lamb shank and smoked trout.
Lake Bled is about 3km to walk around which we did the next morning.

While at breakfast before the walk I thought I would seek more info about the hotel we were staying in as it has a majestic feel to it. As it so happened, Tito loved Lake Bled and liked to stay there during the summers and so built a summer residence. This was now our hotel. The rooms were massive. https://www.bled.si/en/accommodation/list-of-ac…
      Next stop Croatia.

      SUP @ Bönigen

      September 20, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Also habe ich mich direkt am Brienzer See einquartiert.

Also ausgepackt und aufgepumpt.
