    Baja Bound

    February 7 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Up early, got to the airport quickly, so nice to get there is just over half an hours versus 5 hours from CB. Fly north to SFO, that felt exciting but it rained hard there and visibility prevented any views of the city.

Nice window seats on both flights, great view of the Sea of Cortez on the way to San Jose del Cabo. Went through customs pretty fast and picked up both bags. The wing foil got to fly for free, bonus.

The rental car pickup was also easy despite warnings of excessive insurance charges which were in with what was to be expected.

On the drive to La Ventana I picked up Patricia, a French lady who works in logistics for medicins sans frontières. As darkness was closing in I made sure to set her up with the next ride to La Paz as I had to turn off to LV. It was a pleasant and informative conversation in French.

    Day 1 La Ventana

    February 8 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Woke up and went for a walk on the beach at sunrise and was treated to an incredible display it oranges, pinks, purples and reds. Truly stunning.

Met up with Roger and Keith who came in yesterday. Great to see long time friends from CB. Roger is putting a new floor in his trailer and we got started on ripping out the old disgusting carpet. I'm on vacation but the wind is not up and it's cloudy and chilly, so I'm not missing out by helping out. Roger treats for lunch, the food in Mexico is real and very good.

I got to sublet a spot that is temporarily vacated, since Dave is out with surgery. Front line on the beach, awesome.
I spent a bit of time unpacking the great and setting up the wing and the foil. It's a complete kit for beginners and it is easy to take on an airplane.

In the afternoon I am standing on the beach holding the wing to get used to the feel and how it handles.

    Day 2 La Ventana

    February 9 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today was a surprising repeat of yesterday's sunrise. Absolutely gorgeous, I had a long walk on the beach, did some yoga and stretched. The cloud cover made the colors but for the rest of the day the beach was uninspiring, so we worked more on Roger's trailer. It's looking great.

In the afternoon I took a SUPER paddle and went out is very low winds on the water and used the paddle for balance and motion. I learned how the board behaves and where the balance points are. I managed to get up on it and stay up for a bit. It's a small board and it requires forward inertia for stability. It performs even better once it is out of the water on the foil. But I haven't gotten there yet.

Overall not much of a beach day but it was productive. A bit of a working vacation.

    On the water standing

    February 10 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

It is finally sunny but now we are in the routine for getting the floor done, which is fine for a bit, but it went on a bit too long for the weather we are having.

Dinners have been at John and Martha's next door and Kim and Sonia join also for 8 of us having great conversations about this area and I learn a lot from them. I could potentially be here next year for a few months.

Still I get out in good wind which is what we were waiting for as it typically develops in the afternoon. I use the lessons learned from the days before with the wing and the balance on the board. My experience with wind surfing helps out and I get in the foil once which was a hilarious feeling. Can't wait to get up and get a ride on that foil. I'm also able to get off my knees and into my feet. This is supposed to take longer, it's a hard sport to learn. I'm excited for the progress.

Nice to have a sunny day on the beach. The temperatures are chillier than I expected, but the water is plenty warm with a wetsuit. Although it is sometimes colder in the winter here. I'm really into some heat during those winter months.

    Grey day

    February 11 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Woke up to a sunrise with some amazing colors again, it is cloudy and there is a chilly wind blowing right away in the morning. I keep three layers of clothes on and go for a walk on the beach, it's still a relaxed and beautiful beach and I'm listening to motivational YT videos.

For a Sunday we have a relaxing cup of coffee but then the saws come out and we knock out almost all of the bedroom flooring, great teamwork. My part is done, we go to a very late lunch and I am tired and go for a old man nap which is more of a slumber. I hang out in camp waiting for the super bowl to start. I'm cold so I'm in my bag and I'm the car listening to some more motivational videos.

We watch the super bowl and go for dessert at the Las Palmas restaurant.

I didn't get the gumption up to get in the water. Tired and chilled reduced my motivation enough to skip it.

    Sunny windy perfect

    February 12 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Rogers floor is just about done and I no longer need to work on it which is perfect because the weather today is exactly what we're looking for to go wing foiling.

Frosty my neighbor is from Canada, he is an interesting fellow who has been coming here since 1994. He offered to give me a ride up the coast so I could do it downwinder. Since I'm not yet capable of getting on the foil consistency I just get blown down wind and instead of walking back on the beach many times it is easier to get a ride few miles up.

On this ride I intend to stay on my knees and try to get the foil out of the water it works a few times and it is another experience in the bank. It feels like I'm starting to learn this.

After a quick lunch the group decides to do a run down to the bottom of the bay. The arrival is too much for my skills they decide and so Keith and I go to another drive up to coast just like I did. This ride back down I I kept in eye out for ke ith to make sure I stayed about level with him but I had an absolute blast getting on the foil cutting cross and getting all the way out there and then cut back in and it was such a hoot and I was hollering with joy. That was worth the price for the whole trip right there. The sun feels good too.

Once we get in we get dried off and cleaned up so we can drive my rental car backup to get Rogers truck and by doing this I managed to get a third ride in. It's a huge day I'm a little more tired but I still have a great time. My shoulders are pretty tired as well.

Coming in at put my gear down rinse it off and clean everything else up and take a shower. It's been a perfect day so far but it's going to get even better The whole group, John and Martha , Kim and Sonia, Don and Mary, Roger and Keith. decide to go to dinner at Las Palmas restaurant next door and they have delicious food. Great conversations were had and a lot of fun and laughter. Roger sure has a great group of people around them over here and they are very welcoming.

The 12th was a perfect day.

    Last day on the beach

    February 13 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Woke up at sunrise and got out right away on the paddle board in my fleece and caught the sunrise just a beautiful morning on flat water without wind. I came back in and went back out in my wetsuit all the way to Rasta beach where I met up with a couple from Idaho, Andy and Laura who were hop scotching down Baja in their Sprinter van, they were free camping on the beach. Conversation was about travel, including a huge meeting at Tecolote beach around February 1st, it sounded like a lot of fun. On the way back I ran into a large school of Mobula rays, that are in this area for mating season. Some were jumping more than 6 feet out of the water creating a spectacle.

I paddled back and went for a long swim with the snorkel mask, checking out the reef. Took a shower and now I'm sitting in the sun, it feels wonderful.

I went decadent and got a flan chocolate at Las Palmas and a coffee as I was fading a bit in the sun.

The wind picked up and I got another downwinder in from La Tuna with Roger. The focus was on standing up.

One last dinner at John and Martha's with the group, fantastic friendly vibe. It has been a week far beyond expectations.

    Travel day back to Tucson

    February 14 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Saying goodbye after getting my stuff packed up. I'm glad I got the Gong beginner wing foil. It's really well designed and it performed pretty well for me as a rookie.

On the way to the airport I stopped in Los Barrilles and had a very nice lunch of Marlin eggs Benedict in the beach. Rick has a place here, and while it is more polished than La Ventana the beach allowes 4x4s and it ruins the place.

It's an easy airport in San Jose del Cabo. United once again offered to take my board free of charge. Gotta love being a premier member. Flying through SFO again.

I was sitting in 12f on the right and had a view of the California coast flew right over my old hounds at Mission Bay and La Jolla Cove and also saw San Pedro and Greg's old neighborhood which was very nostalgic for me.

I feel good about going home to my place at the airpark. It's quiet there.
