      Up to London

      July 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We drove from Warwick up to Heathrow Airport and returned our car. Avis @ Heathrow is the ultimate plane spotting venue ... smack bang across the road from the runway.

From there we took the tube into London and then set out to explore.

After putting our luggage in storage at Victoria Station, we then went to find Buckingham Palace and surrounds. We didn't make it very far as there is so much to see and it was all so new. So, it was then back to Victoria to collect our luggage and off to find our apartment in Oxford Street and then off to explore the neighborhood.

      1. Tag London Sightseeing

      July 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

On Hopp Off Bus gesetz. On Hop off Bus eingestiegen.
Da

      Buckingham Palace

      May 30, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Day 3 in London

      June 24, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Starting to feel normal in this time zone and navigating the city from the left side of the road. We scooted out to hit the changing of the guard at Buckingham - R's fervent request. With a few rain drops, we were concerned it would be canceled, but fortunately the show indeed went on.

Just made it in time to predictably huge crowds. Tom was able to heft the solid squirt onto his shoulders to see and take copious video and still shots. Bands played an array of show and movie tunes - Greatest Showman, Hairspray, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and more.

R and I then positioned ourselves on the outer facing fence to watch them process. Met a lovely mother & daughter from Atlanta. They invited R to get in front of them for a front-row view. He was thrilled! (Cannot believe they do this daily!)

We pedaled over to the Churchill War Rooms. I was clever and purchased on annual membership, which will save us 20+ pounds because we also plan to tour the HRH Belfast Wednesday AND allowed us to skip past the priority line (the regular line was over an hour wait). Super fascinating!! Not only learning more about WWII from the British perspective and seeing their strategy & leadership location in an underground bunker, but also the life and times of Churchill himself. We spent north of two hours there - basically until the boys were dragging Tom and me out!

We pedaled over to SOHO for some fantastic burgers and pints of London brewed beer at the Brewdog pub (loved the Punk IPA!). Tom and I enjoyed vegan Beyond burgers - my first. Very filling, yet not heavy, like beef patties can be. Stuffed, we headed up to Kings Cross to see Platform 9 3/4 from Harry Potter lore. Unfortunately, there was an hour long queue to have a photo with the trolly cart. However, we were satisfied with just a photo of the sign and cart.

Back to the bike stand, we wound our way through Piccadilly (I became directionally challenged, so Tom took over navigating) back toward the West End / Covent Garden area for some excellent gelato at Gelupo. Finally, a long, slow pedal back to the flat. Proud of how the not quite 11yo has been able to keep up, keep safe on the roads, and not an ounce of complaining!

Over the past three days, my Fitbit has tallied nearly 60K steps and 10 hours of biking! Sleeping well tonight!!

      Day 199

      July 30, 2016 in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We come back to the USA tomorrow. TOMORROW. So how did we spend the last day of our trip?

We had a lovely day in London walking around and seeing the tourist sites with Nick's college friends Mike and Ari, as well as Ari's little brother Diego who was also in town. We saw Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Green Park, St. James Park, the Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, Burrough Market, The Globe Theatre, the Thames, and St. Paul's Cathedral. It was such a fun day! We didn't go into any of the paid activities because prices are steep in London, but we loved just walking around with our friends and going for an adventure. It was so amazing to spend time, even just a day, with people with whom we are close and to be able to make plans to see them again soon in Buffalo. Thank you Mike, Ari, and Diego for showing us a lovely time and sending us off in style!

We are currently headed back to our hostel to pack and prepare for tomorrow's journey. We each have a range of emotions about the end of this trip, though it's safe to say that Nick has probably come to terms with this more than Rachel has. (Transitions are hard!) We're obviously both excited to see family and friends back home ("excited" doesn't actually do the feeling justice), but there is a melancholy feeling about this phase ending. Travel has become our life, but it was only ever temporary. And maybe that's why we loved it so much and were able to really take advantage of the opportunities for growth while on this journey. We're sad to say goodbye to this life, but we're also joyous to start the next chapter together. This has been a life-changing experience, and it has reaffirmed our commitment to each other. We look forward to sharing more stories from our travels and to making new memories with you.

      Day 5: London, England

      July 11, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We started our day by taking our first tube ride from Kings Cross to Westminster. It was easy to understand and well marked. It's still overwhelming because of the amount of people crammed into such a small space. We had a cool and windy morning to see all of the main Westminster sites: Westminster Palace, Victoria Tower with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, then we made our way to Buckingham Palace through St. James Park and saw part of the changing of the guard. We then walked through the Horse Guard's Parade to Trafalgar Square and went to the National Gallery to browse through all of the paintings. After our best coffee yet on the trip and a delicious berry tart at Cafe Concerto (very posh), we went to The National Portrait Gallery to browse through the portraits of the royals and other important brits. We then grabbed a warm soup and a coffee from Pret A Manger (a great affordable and healthy chain option throughout the UK). We people watched and noticed how many homeless people were at Trafalgar Square and openly using drugs in broad daylight taking hits off of an aerosol can. I'm used to seeing marijuana, but nothing like this. A londoner sitting next to us told us that the homeless population has exploded recently in London for whatever reason. It's so difficult and impossible for me to ignore the ugly parts of such a grandiose place. Much like DC and other large cities, the homeless and poor live amongst the wealthy and it's beautiful architecture. We then made our way back to Westminster Abbey to attend the free evening worship (otherwise you have to pay £20 each to visit- no thanks) and got to hear the choir sing for about 45 minutes. The cathedral was stunning and hearing them sing was a fantastic way to visit the cathedral. After the evensong, we made our way back to our flat via the tube and made dinner and decided to stay in the rest of the night.Read more

      Buckingham Palace

      October 10, 2015 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We didn't get to see the actual changing of the guard because there were huge crowds everywhere. But our tour guide, Doug, knew where and when to position us to see the regiment go by. It was the Royal Air Force's turn to be the guards, and they don't have the red coats with the big fuzzy hats. But they did have their band march by. They are very smart - they put the trombones in the front rank!Read more

      Buckingham Palast

      October 19, 2017 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Read more

      Buckingham Palace

      July 20, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today we wanted to visit the the Queen herself but, accidentally or luckily we don’t know, we could saw how they change the royal guard. It was fascinating to whiteness this spectacle with the music and their costumes. There were many tourists and we were glad when „the show“ was over👑Read more
