      London with McDowell’s

      July 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Last summer when Anna and I came to London, we had a full day with Caroline and Isabel McDowell, cementing a strong friendship. We have loved staying in touch all year. They braved strikes on the trains and skipped school to meet us for a super fun day in London seeing many sights and checking a lot of boxes!Read more

Final stop of tour - South London

      September 11, 2019 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Fabian had one more area of “hidden London” to share with us, so we left Brixton by tube to Bermondsey in South London. We wandered through the narrow streets to the King’s Stairway Park, located onThames, where we had wonderful views back to the centre of London. We could get a great view of the London skyline, and we were the only people there. We could see Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s, the Shard, The Gherkin And Cheese Grater!

The area where the park was located used to be docks, and was heavily bombed in WW2. Many of the buildings fell into the river, and you can still see many weathered bricks lying on the “beach”, many now just pebbles.

We then wandered down some more narrow laneways to a wonderful old pub called the Mayflower, for a drink and where our tour finished. It was from this site that the Mayflower departed for America. The day exploring a different side of London was absolutely wonderful.

      London

      July 7, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Huzzah! I made it to London, England! We landed at Heathrow around 11:00 a.m. After customs and retrieving my bag I took numerous trains followed by a bus and then walked the rest of my way to the Airbnb I booked in Walthamstow. After resting, I went to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and enjoyed Henry VIII.Read more

      CitizenM Hotel London (Bankside)

      November 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

It took us about 3 hours after landing to navigate the airport, clear customs, get a train in to central London, get a tube close (-ish) to our hotel and then walk to our hotel. We saw some interesting sites along the way, but jetlag is creeping up and we are feeling pretty wiped out.

The hotel is kind of an interesting concept. The rooms are extremely tiny, but there are very expansive, and comfortable common areas. So you are expected to spend little time in your room and work or read down in the common areas.

Although it was tiny, the room was surprisingly well equipped and even came with a tiny drawer refrigerator.

      Modern Marvels

      November 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

One thing I have noticed about England that is different from 25 years ago: the sinks in the public bathrooms have been modernised.  As I recall, pretty much every public bathroom, even those in brand new construction (brand new at the time, that is) had separate hot and cold taps.  Often separated by quite a large physical distance.  So it was impossible to wash your hands with warm water.  Your choices were scalding or frigid.  Nowadays, many public bathrooms have a mixing faucet, like we would see at home.  Some still have the older configuration (hand is for scale in that photo).  Interestingly, all the mixing faucets look very similar.  I don't know if they all come from the same manufacturer, but they look like they do.Read more

      Seventy years young!

      June 3, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

How many people expected, way back in 1952, to celebrate another Jubilee seventy years on? In the meantime we have enjoyed the Queen's silver, golden and diamond Jubilees. Now there's only one milestone to be passed: the reign of Louis XIV the Sun King of France, and he was less than five years old on ascending the throne.

There's a special sense of release this time around, knowing that if this anniversary had fallen in 2021 or 2020, it would have passed without much celebration. I have one reason to be grateful for the lockdowns, for without them I would probably never have found Red Cross Garden in Southwark. It's around there that I find a series of outdoor parties with music, dancing and chilling out.

The hub of all this is around Buckingham Palace where crowds are gathered for the evening entertainment. With some of the musicians more famous than talented, I don't stay long but some of the crowd are in for the long haul.

The final day witnesses a street party almost in my backyard, in Cleaver Square. Charlie's Patch, near a house when Charlie Chaplin once lived, is resplendent, as are the numerous cakes which look almost too nice to ruin by eating. The girl from the group From the Hip, belts out James Brown's "I got you, I feel good". So do we but the little dog, maybe less so.
