    • Day 16

      Canterbury

      August 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Day 0 - Canterbury

      April 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

I arrived at Canterbury today and knew instantly that this is exactly where I am meant to be. This Cathedral is impressive. Quite more than I have ever encountered before. It was founded in 597 AD. Obviously, what I walked through today isn't exactly that building, but parts of it are. It is awe inspiring and the perfect place to start a pilgrimage. Mary-Lou is with me now and I am so looking forward to starting off together tomorrow. Note the pilgrim shell on the front gate.
P.S. the second last photo is what is left of the town wall!

      Canterbury

      August 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury Cathedral, founded 597 A.D., is the headquarters of the Church of England and Anglican Communion, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows.

Canterbury is a city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the county of Kent, England; it was until 1974 a county borough. It lies on the River Stour. The city has a mild oceanic climate.

The city is a popular tourist destination. The city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism, alongside higher education and retail. The city's population was over 55,000 in 2011. There is a substantial student population; the city has one of the highest proportions of students to permanent residents in the country.

During the Second World War, 10,445 bombs dropped during 135 separate raids destroyed 731 homes and 296 other buildings in the city, including the missionary college and Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School. 119 civilian people died through enemy action in the borough. The most devastating raid was on 1 June 1942 during the Baedeker Blitz. Before the end of the war, the architect Charles Holden drew up plans to redevelop the city centre, but locals were so opposed that the Citizens' Defence Association was formed; it swept to power in the 1945 municipal elections. Rebuilding of the city centre eventually began 10 years after the war.

    • Day 14

      Canterbury

      May 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After Deal, our next stop was Canterbury and its cathedral. A monastery has been on the site since the 6th century and the cathedral since the 11th century. It was another amazing building that pretty much has been at the centre of the history of religion in England and of the Church of England.Read more

      Canterbury

      January 2 in England ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

Took a morning train from London Victoria east to Kent and the city of Canterbury. It’s a beautiful little town whose Cathedral Quarter is very well preserved and bustling with visitors even on a rainy January afternoon. Lots to see here.Read more

      The dogs of Canterbury Cathedral.

      September 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

So, we read about some carvings on the cathedral that were put up in 2008 during a renovation.
We didn't find those, that we know of, but found many depictions of dogs looking down from the towers. This is them.Read more

    • Day 1

      Canterbury

      July 22, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Morgen geht es bereit weiter...Read more

    • Day 31

      Welcome to Britain. Keep left.

      May 19, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

... And I do try to keep left in most ways. Ferry load and ride to get here from Calais is just like doing the Spirit of Tassie , just nine hours shorter. It took only a few hundred yards and some adrenaline to unlearn my advanced and seamless European driving skills. We called in on our namesake church this afternoon. Friendly welcome and a personal tour. Good to sense another lively congregation going and growing with the times.
Tonight is a special treat for me. I bought the tickets months ago when I found the dates worked out. More on this next...

      Canterbury River tour

      August 21, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Well it isn’t Bruges but Canterbury does have a River and it does have a river tour.

A very pleasant fellow called Pete rowed us up and down the Stour River.

It’s about as deep as a decent bath but is amazingly clear as it drains through chalk. (Think White Cliffs of Dover).

Pleasant sit for 45 minutes, past (under) oldest road bridge in England. Originally buit by Saxons and widened in 1770’s.

Very interesting way to see the city, the flind used in the walls cuts the noise amazingly, also kills any phone reception.

Past ancient buildings including Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr Hospital where pilgrims got one night free and one drink.

Not a hospital Hospital but a plave of hospitality.

Past part of King’s School that’s ben operating since 6th Centuru. Not known if the curriculum has been updted, we can only assume.

      Canterbury

      July 21, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

      Mercredi, 20 juillet 2016
Read more
