      Day 2 Southampton

      August 2, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Sometimes things don’t go quite as planned which seems to be a bit of a recurring theme so far... The delay meant we had to jump on-line and change our transport arrangements to Southampton (at a cost of an extra 20 pounds).

So the flight from Singapore was delayed, and delayed, eventually taking off just after 3 am. The flight itself was pretty uneventful with a sleeping pill ensuing 9 of the 13 hour flight passed with me knowing nothing about it. We were just about to land at Heathrow (literally just over the end of the airport) when we had to do an emergency go around as there was a plane on the runway in the way. Luckily no issue apart from from some startled looks on the passengers faces and we eventually landed safely.

A quick trip through immigration and then onto the loser cruiser (err...bus) to Southampton arriving about 2.30pm. We are staying at the Premier Inn West Quay which is pretty basic but close to the centre of the city. So we walked down to the Sea City museum to visit the Titanic exhibition and history of the Southampton (both really good).

While we were there we saw some photos and commentary about Robert Hickens who was the grandfather of a friend of Christines (Deidre) and the Quartermaster on the Titanic. More of him later as we have a special job to do when we get to the Titanic Experience in Belfast.

We went out for dinner and were going to a local pub (the Titanic) which is cute from the outside (see attached picture) but really basic and I don’t say that lightly. It had a small but friendly crowd of regulars so we had a couple of drinks there and adjourned to the nearby Standing Order pub for actual dinner.

An early night as we were both knackered after about 38 hours of travel/faffing around.

Photos attached show our seats from Chch to Singapore; Singapore Airport terminal 3; seats on the much delayed flight to Heathrow; the double round approach to Heathrow; the Standing Order pub; the Titanic pub; the old City Gates Southampton; a bio of Deirdre’s grandfather; a mock up of class 2 Titanic cabin; a article from an April 1912 newspaper again featuring Dee’s grandfather.

      Southampton, UK

      June 8, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Had the depressing discovery that the wifi doesn't work in my hotel room. So i'm sitting in the hotel lobby using the half hour of free wifi they provide. You can buy internet for 24 hours for £3 but there's no point when it doesn't work in my room.
After my lunch at Standing Orders I went back to the hotel and passed out. I had set an alarm for 5:30pm to get up and get the shopping I needed to do done but I completely slept through it. I didn't wake up until 8:30pm. Luckily the 2 places I wanted are open late. Asda for my shopping and once again Standing Orders for my dinner and wifi.
Tomorrow I have to be at the ship for 9am so I'm headed back to my room for some relaxation and sleep before the chaos starts tomorrow.

    • Day 34

      Southampton, UK

      October 3, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today was a great day but at the same time very hard. We docked with Aurora so I got to meet up with my boyfriend Jackson in Southampton for a quick breakfast. Then go on Aurora with a visitor pass he had gotten me for a few hours until he had to start work. Leaving and saying goodbye again was definitely the hard part. We at least dock together one more time on the 20th before he heads home on leave in November. Then I’ll see him again we he joins here in February.Read more

      Southampton day 2

      June 13, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I am currently sitting on the balcony. It's 7:45 am and the temperature is 54. Perfect!

Last night we had dinner at Wagamama with Heather's friend Andy and his charming wife Jade. After dinner we stopped by the co op for breakfast supplies. The kid found banana milk. He was thrilled.

We also managed to catch the Europa regional exclusive Pokémon Mr. Mime. A definite highlight!!

Today we plan to do the Southampton city wall walk and fund a great pub for lunch.

    • Day 156

      Southampton, Southampton

      July 2, 2017 in England ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

At Standing Order with Jackson grabbing some brunch. He starts at 12:30 so we don't have a lot of time before we have to be back to the ship. Today we are docked with Azura and Arcadia so I got to see my next ship for the first time. Walking around Southampton with Jackson today is like being at home walking around with my Mom. Always being stopped because he has to talk to people he knows from the other two ships. People keep coming up to our table as well who recognize him. There are some people I know on Azura I tried to meet up with as well but with people's work schedules it didn't work out.

Next we are headed to pound land (basically a dollar store) to get some snacks to take back to the ship. Then back to the ship for Jackson to start work and for me to sleep. I started work at 7:30 this morning, opening up the gallery so people who forgot to get their photos can pick them up before they leave the ship.

    • Day 135

      Southampton, UK

      October 19, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

One final Standing Orders lunch with Jackson. Followed by some very much needed shopping before the long trans-Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean. One of the benefits of being assistant manager with our new manager Harry is he just gives me a list of things to do and doesn’t care when i do it. So I worked in the morning so I could get off in the afternoon with Jackson when he finished work.Read more

      Days 4 and 5 Southampton/Bon Voyage

      August 4, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We had a bit of free time on Sunday morning as we weren’t due to board the Nautica until 1 pm. So I went out for another walk early, making it as far as St Mary’s stadium (home of Southampton FC). Typically for a lot of British stadia it is in the middle of an industrial/council housing area but only a 15 minute (if you know where you’re going) walk from the city centre.

Also typically there a few signs pointing you in the general direction and you can often see the place but it takes a series of dead end guesses as to which actual street is the correct one! Anyway several false starts and curse words later, I found it (see attached photo) and took an alternative route back to town.

Following that we did a bit of shopping and took the 3 minute taxi ride to the ship. Boarding was really easy and we were having lunch and a drink within 15 minutes of turning up dockside.

Hotel review.... We stayed at the Premier Inn Westquay. Pros - it’s really close to town, the port and transport routes and it’s pretty cheap. Cons - just about everything else. It has no reception to speak of, the rooms are really basic (no fridge!), and there aren’t too many staff around to do anything.

We are en route to Edinburgh and had a sea day for the first day of the cruise so not much to report or see. Lots of reading, forming of quiz teams, playing of games and lazing around.

Photos attached ..... Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium, Central Hall and the Premier Inn Westquay.

    • Day 9

      Southampton, UK

      July 20, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After some major delays docking due to an unusually low tide we finally made it off the ship. Our first stop was hour hotel for the night the Travelodge Southampton Central to drop off our suitcases. We then headed to Boots (pretty much the same as Shoppers Drug Mart) to pick up cold medicine for both Jackson and Ruby. I’ve been dealing with a LOT of coughing and nose blowing the last couple days. Now we are at our usual spot, Standing Orders. Jackson is waiting for Sports Direct to open at 9:30am so he can pick up a suitcase, well Ruby and I will be waiting here for him to come back so we can have an early lunch before he has to head back to the ship for work.
Yesterday was our final sea day. Ruby and I were very surprised when the noon announcement woke me up. We had no idea we had slept so long. When Jackson finished work shortly after that we played another game of Pachessi before having yet another nap. We later realized we slept through the Great British Sail along which I was a bit sad about. I was looking forward to taking Ruby to it. We ended up ordering room service for lunch so we could eat with Jackson which meant we didn’t end up leaving our cabin until a bit before our reservation at Sindhu the Indian restaurant for dinner. Ruby really enjoyed it. We then however had to head back to the cabin to pack. We packed until we headed to see DNA an act that made it to the finals on Britain’s Got Talent. I think they were quite good but Ruby was very sceptical of their abilities, not really believing get show.
