    • South Downs National Park; Midhurst area

      September 19, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The New Lipchis Way is a walking trail that links Chichester Harbour, a large natural harbour area south west of Chichester, with Liphook, a large village in East Hamphire. It passes through the heart of the South Downs National Park, including Midhurst where we link up with it as it passes through a pretty section of the Rother Valley. We join at the weir and follow the route along the river through Woolbeding Parkland to a bridge, where we cross and follow the river north. We pass Stedham Mill and the magnificent Stedham House. We leave this trail at Iping and cross the A272 to get to Iping and Stedham Common, where we link up with the next trail.

The Serpent Trail is appropriately named; it runs from Petersfield to Haslemere; 11 miles apart as the crow flies, yet the trail is 64 miles long! The Common is managed sandy heathland and we cross it to reach Woolmer Bridge where we pass through the Severals Woods en route to Midhurst. Next morning, we pick up the trail across Midhurst Common and then follow Pitsham Lane to Cocking Causeway. Here we see a large obelisk, which turns out to be a memorial to Richard Cobden; he was born locally and as a Victorian MP, reformer and statesman was involved with the Corn Laws. The memorial states "Free Trade, Peace, Goodwill Among Nations" - still topical. We carry on down Dunford Hollow and reach the neglected Dunford House - this was built by the same Richard Cobden and gifted by him to the YMCA Charity on condition it was used for educational purposes. It is now, controversially, up for sale..... We leave the Serpent Trail after walking along the Goldbslls Plantation and proceed back to Midhurst - this is with the New Lipchis Trail again - along the outskirts of the Cowdray Estate.

      Life "Below Stairs"

      August 31, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

The lower level shows how the servants lived and worked. We found out the definition of Still Room--a separate kitchen area (distillery) where cordials, spirits, perfumes, and preserves were made, tea was brewed and breakfast and tea trays laid.Read more

      Uppark House and Garden

      August 31, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Uppark is an 18th century Georgian mansion in the South Downs (the hilly area south of London). In 1989 a fire destroyed a large part of the mansion, but luckily, it happened during the daytime, so staff and tourists had a chance to rescue much of the furniture, wall hangings, art, and mirrors. It took 5 years to restore the house and reopen it. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed of the interior, so I used these from the National Trust website. The restoration work is amazing!

A beautiful Doll House has been at Uppark since 1746. Since it is 300 years old and in such good condition, it is obvious that it was not played with, but was Lady Featherstonhaugh's hobby. It is furnished with fine furniture with real marble tops, imported silks, porcelain, oil paintings, and real candles!

      GO WEST !!! Teil 2

      September 23, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Hen and Chicken Restaurant, Froyle, UK

      July 12, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I have been having a bit of trouble at times finding food I like in England. I'm not a fan of lamb, rabbit, duck or fish so when we saw a place called Hen and Chicken we thought I might be fine. It was also a carvery which we have learned is a good thing. It's basically like a good quality country style buffet but you only go through once. It's not unlimited. Tonight's choices were beef, turkey and pork!Read more

    • Weald and Downland Living Museum

      September 18, 2020 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Stopping here on our journey to Midhurst, we find a large site covering 40 acres and surrounded by beautiful South Downs countryside. The Living Museum has over 50 historic buildings from South East England that were all threatened with destruction and have been dismantled, conserved and rebuilt in their historical context.

We see houses from many periods, old stables, a working woodyard, a market square area and a craft and industries section. Not forgetting the modern Downland Gridshell, a lightweight structure made of oak laths.

The Living Museum is also the venue for a popular BBC2 programme, "The Repair Shop", in which a team of conservators breath new life into old household treasures that viewers bring in for their consideration, comment and possible rejuvenation.

      Chawton to Farnham

      March 18 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

At last! Day 3 of our Pilgrims Way, Chawton to Farnham, which saw us walking 23km, lots of it through mud, making the going rather tough at times!
We started the day in rain, the stuff that gets you wet, but once it stopped we were able to pack our wet gear away and trudge onwards and (sometimes) upwards. It was definitely a good workout for the legs, and carrying around the extra weight on our walking boots meant we got an even better workout 😂.
Beginning in Chawton, we visited the church for our Pilgrim stamp. As we walked to the church we noticed a lady cold water swimming in the local stream - there'd been so much rain it had swollen and become deep enough for a good swim! Rather her than us 😲😂!
We headed off to Jane Austin's house and onwards to Alton. The properties in the village were all very 'Jane Austinesque' and it was easy to imagine her wandering around, just like Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensibility. In Alton, we loved the blue plaque informing us that she definitely hadn't lived in that house 😂 - very amusing.
We gathered a few stamps today as we walked (and trudged) through the towns and villages - Chawton, Alton, Holybourne (very posh and where Alan Titchmarsh lives), Froyle, Bentley and finally Farnham. At one of the churches we found some very interesting brick gravestones.
A very welcome lunch was enjoyed in Lower Froyle before heading off to Farnham. My idea of avoiding yet more muddy fields by walking along the road was dismissed as I hadn't realised 'the road' was the A31🙄😂. So more mud it was, but the sun shone occasionally, and many of the fantastic yew trees in Bentley churchyard were over 350 years old and absolutely beautiful.
When we reached Farnham we'd missed the bus back to Alton and it was about a 40 minute wait for the next one, plus another bus back to the car in Chawton 😳 so a quick taxi ride it was! The driver took one look at our boots... but we were prepared with large plastic bags and were able to keep his taxi clean😀 for which he was extremely grateful.
It was a lovely day for a walk despite the mud. Good company, good food and a good workout!
