    • Off with her head! 👑🪓

      June 22, 2022 in England ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After a full English breakfast with all the trimmings I reluctantly headed to the Kilburn Park underground… not only was it operational but it was quiet. It seemed people heeded the warning not to travel unless it was urgent… When you are on holidays from Australia 🇦🇺 travel is always urgent because it’s made up of lifetime opportunities & experiences that you just can’t give up on! I’m certainly not going to sit on my hands for the last week of my holiday and put adventures on hold or in the too hard basket 🧺

Excitedly I arrived at King Henry the VIII Palace! I picked up an audio guide and off I went… The kitchens were fascinating because all of the meat was boiled before it was roasted. Then spices were added so that it actually had some flavour. The kitchens would’ve been so hot because there was six fires going at once in there. Henry predominantly ate meat and there were usually two courses with 40 dishes in each course! 🐷🐬🐏🐄🐓🐀🍖🍗🥩🥩🥩🍷🍷🍷

Tracy Borman was the audio guide historian. She is my favourite all time Royal historian with her chosen expertise in the Tudor times. 👑❤️
I’d absolutely LOVE ❤️ her job! Her office is at Kensington Palace in Queen Victoria’s nursery.

It was a myth that King Henry and his court only drink beer and wine. They also drink a lot of water which was piped in from the local spring.

Very annoyingly there were school groups touring the Palace at the same time as me. How I was a teacher I will never know! They were rowdy, misbehaving and so naughty 👿 Spoiling everybody’s quiet 🤫 enjoyment. Reminded me of my teaching days in London; which were hideous. The children were the worst behaved in the world apparently. Australian and Canadian teachers were loved because of our great discipline training. I recall one teaching day I was told to just keep them busy for the day. They were beyond learning anything! 🙃🤯

I have been constantly reminded during this trip also of the loud, obnoxious, overemphasised voice of the species known as the American tourist! 😳🫢

William the third lived here in the 18th century and was very private. He did not allow the public to watch him eating lunch, which Henry did. This made him much less popular. Watching the monarch dine was a great exercise in public relations! Take a note Leanne LOL 😝 you need to hold court at lunchtime in Sunny ☀️ Brunny! Public dining was the social media of the day.

It is said that on certain nights, Catherine Howard’s (4th wife) screams, pleading for her life can be heard in hallway of King 👑 Henry’s Apartments.

The Georgian part of history was fascinating too. Much of the Tudor architecture was destroyed for the new dynasty. Lavish parties were commonplace often. Sounds like a fun period! 🎊 The most intimate members of the Prince & Princess of Wales watched King George getting dressed! 🙈

The Georgian era ended Monarchy living at Hampton Court Palace 🛑

I absolutely love the Medieval 🏰 Tudor times and this palace was fascinating. I spent four hours exploring and 10,000 steps… I could have easily spent all day!

Unfortunately (…or fortunately…) The train stopped running from Hampton Court because there was a suicide on the line. This is extremely sad and the cockney station 🚉 guard was not being very empathetic; essentially bleating on about how hard it will now be for her to get home! 😳👎🏻
Hopefully they will run again sometime later this afternoon. In the meantime I’m doing the lemon 🍋 into lemonade dance again and having drinks and lunch at a cute local pub! 🍺

To commemorate Henry himself I’m having a pale ale pie with clotted cream mash, buttered leeks, savoy cabbage and rich ale gravy! 🥧

      Living like a King

      August 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Another rest day (sort of) which was much needed. Bit of a sleep in and then went to Tesco in the morning to pick up some groceries to cook dinner for the family. We then went to Hampton Court Palace which is one of the royal residences and was the former home of King Henry VIII. Pretty staggering to see a building that dates back to 1514, 300 or so years before NZ was founded. We walked around for a while with the audio guides provided as part of the admission, and then headed to watch a joust which was being held that day. The crowd watching the joust was split into 4, with each section of the crowd allocated a knight and horse to support for the joust. Our knight fell off his horse in the practice run but that was his only weakness as he went on to win the joust. Very cool to see a joust in real life (sadly less violence then the movies). After that we checked out the palace some more and then made our way back. We cooked up dinner for the Rossers as a thanks for them for hosting us, and then ended the day with some Pictionary (we later learned we were using children's cards rather than the adult cards woops). -VRead more

      Ice-skating at Hampton Court

      December 27, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Today we all headed out to nearby Hampton Court Palace where an ice-skating rink was set up for the Christmas season.

After a few turns of the ice rink, we got tickets into the palace and grounds. Hampton Court Palace is where King Henry VIII set up court, and it is now a historical museum. There are real working kitchens with huge hunks of meat roasting, and pies cooking.

We wandered through the Great Hall, reading about Tudor dining etiquette: "Don't shift your buttocks left and right as if to let off some blast. Sit neatly and still".

Henry's Counsel Chamber is set up with projections of all the main players (Cromwell, Cardinal Wolsey etc) holding forth with advice and opinion.

There were also actors in costume roaming around acting out hilarious scenes about a group of players coming to court to entertain Queen Elizabeth. Lots of Shakespearean confusion, cross-dressing and audience participation.

      Hampton Court Palace

      May 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This beautiful Grade I listed palace in Richmond Upon Thames, was once owned by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and the building began in the early 16th century to create a palace from his country house; a palace fit for a King. King Henry VIII liked it so much that he took it for himself.

Henry and his wives would all live at Hampton Court. The last monarch to live at Hampton Court was George II and in 1838, Queen Victoria opened Hampton Court as a tourist attraction.

I have wanted to see Hampton Court since I started studying Tudor history when I was 12. This was truly magnificent. I also took communion in the Chapel Royal where worship took place today. History is everywhere, walking through and with history.

      Happy Birthday AND Hampton Court

      September 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today is Alex’s 20th birthday. He had a family gathering last night at home with Aunty Deb, Uncle Kev, Aunty Carol and Aunty Lisa. They had pizza, cheesecake and Alex’s favourite ginger beer. We gave him a video call this morning as we had our celebratory 20th birthday cooked breakfast here in Putney. A BIG Happy Birthday to our Alex, we miss you and hope you have a great day today. Love you lots 😘.

We are having a slow start to the day and we will eventually make our way to Adams on the bus ready for our lunch at Hampton Court. The plan is to have lunch and pop across the road to have a look at Hampton Court Palace if we get time. I have packed my sneakers in my bag incase we do.

Todays lunch is to celebrate Adam & Berta’s wedding with all of the London Trozzo family (Aunties, Uncles, Cousins). It was good to see everyone after many years. The food was fabulous. I had the roast beetroot with goats cheese for starters, steak for main and lemon baked cheesecake for desert- it was so yummy. We had a few drinks and spent a lot of time chatting. During our meal. Enzo made a very sweet speech for Adam and Berta.

We went down to the Thames front terrace for afters and eventually left around 5pm. However that was too late to tour the palace but the lovely security man at the gate let us in to have a walk around the front gardens. So I kind of did get to visit Hampton Court Palace but didn’t get to tour it (maybe next time we are in England).

      Exploring Hampton Court Palace

      July 20, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Notwithstanding the British weather, which was out in its full force and diversity, we were still able to enjoy an action-packed day at Hampton Court Palace. A bit off the main London tourist track perhaps, Hampton was the seat of Henry VIII and William III (the last of the Tudors, as we now know). There are four major parts to the visit: palaces, gardens, the Magic garden, and the Maze. We managed to do a respectable job of all but the gardens, and also participate in a paper pot decorating workshop, which netted each of the kids a pinch of dragon plant seeds. Davy and Meg opted not to plant theirs yet and rather wait until we get back home to Switzerland.Read more

      Hampton Court Palace, England

      July 30, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

The next day we ventured away from London and took a ride out to Hampton Court Palace. The home of King Henry the VIII, the palace was amazing... murals, statues, rooms, and courtyards. But the biggest impact was the gardens, the flowers that bloom and the mazes of brush.Read more
