      Heading to York

      17 Juli 2016, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Going along motorway to get York. Director noted that it was unfortunate that the back road routes not used as we miss so much of rural England. There is a planned stop for stretch and refresh along the way. Today we go through Robyn Hood Country.

Passing through coal mining lands with little villages clustered together. Going through peak country, as we head towards York. Tried for photo of wind power but too slow. Sherwood forest coming up. Where is the forest? Sherwood Forest was a royal hunting park. Not forest as we think of it today. Included woodland, farm land and villages. Age and population has decreased forest. Replanting attempts on going now. Did Robin Hood exist?

      Stratford Upon Avon, England

      13 September 2017, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

An easy day of travel from Pencoed, Wales back to England to Stratford upon Avon. We tried to take the backroads to see a little more of the countryside but still the smaller roads are very busy with lots of trees on the road verges. We headed for some of the smaller towns and villages driving around the town centres to see the usual Church, Town clock, old pubs and ruins. Made for a lot of comedy of me trying to drive slow while Mim is trying to take snap shots between laughs. We did walk around Coventry where we saw Lady Godiva's statue and Spon Street that has had the buildings recreated from Medieval times.Baca selengkapnya

To Nottingham day 64 Mon 25 Jun 2018

      25 Juni 2018, Inggris ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Another fine day.Slept in to 8 am, then had breakfast at Nent Hall Country Hotel and began the 186 mile road trip about 10:45 am. Very scenic landscape as we drove through the Pennines. The remainder of the drive was on motorways without anything to look at as you travel along . The Tom Tom took us directly to our accommodation in Nottingham. It was a granny flat in a concrete backyard close to the city. We managed to top up Yvonne’s phone so it could be used till the end of the trip on the way there. Drove to Val Mayer’s house for a bbq with Val, Kate and Kate’s boyfriend Ben. Lovely evening. Got back to the granny flat about 11:30 pm.Baca selengkapnya

      Godiva's Coventry

      29 Maret 2019, Inggris ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Hopped over to Coventry on the train and wandered around the cathedrals— including a tour (which I was the only one, so private tour!) of the Priory and former cathedral built by Godiva that now lay in ruins beneath the surface. Also visited the Holy Trinity Church and saw the Doomsday painting, as well as a gorgeous turquoise ceiling I couldn't stop staring at. Onwards to the third cathedral (these are all bundled together) now in pieces after it was fire-bombed in 1918. Also saw part of the cheylesmore manor house (what remains) of 14th century. Made my way back to Birmingham for a sleep. Back to London tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

      Foxton Staircase Locks

      22 Agustus 2018, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Created for steep gradients, staircase locks are made of numerous locks in a row and appear like stairs in the landscape. The top gate of one lock will also be the bottom gate of lock above. Foxton Locks was built in 1814 at a junction of two canals, has 10 locks and takes 45 - 60 minutes to move through the 75 foot gradient difference. There is a pond in the middle of the staircase, for boats to wait if another boat is in the staircase going the other way. And there are ponds at the side of each lock for water to flow into and out of the lock. In the shipping days, while a boat was going through the locks, it would be an opportunity for the shopping to be done (quickly!).Baca selengkapnya

      Birdlip to Painswick, June 7

      7 Juni 2018, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The Royal George just about did us in.

Food was OK, but we both felt a bit under the weather this AM. Arlene was worse than I was, but she ate more of the hollandaise sauce than I did. At least it is not food poisoning, just an upset stomach.

We had a so-so breakfast at 0700, out the door by 0800 and walking downhill. The way out of town was a bit pecarious as we had to walk along a narrow and curvy road until we reached the trailhead. Cars were hauling and we had a very uneven shoulder to navigate....we both made it.

The trail immediately started downhill (oh, what a delight, but we would pay dearly later) and was a very woodsy trail. I recall what happens to the first walker in the morning that walks a woodsy trail...yep, a face full of spider webs and my hat was covered.

After a few minutes, we stopped as Arlene wanted to check out a side trail so I sat on a rock (being the patient person that I am), and up the trail trots a red fox. We saw each other about the same time and the fox did a 360 as casually as a thief in a jewelry store. Nice surprise so early in the morning.

We continued along the woodsy walk seeing a deer jump in front of us and I flushed a pheasant out of the bushes. Scared me out of my second skin and Arlene got to view his upward flight while I was ducking for cover.

We passed some great views through the trees of the valley below and really enjoyed the cool morning air.

A local running club must have had a 1/2 marathon utilizing the trail, and started such that the runners were running south to north (we are walking north to south). We noticed many, many temporary trail markers providing directions and from the looks of the muddy footprints in the trail, the runners were covered in mud from head to foot. The one part of the trail they did not run up (but we walked up) was the portion to the top of Coopers Hill. This would have been a killer as it did us in.

Amazing what a short break and a sip of water will do for the recovery after a hard effort.

So we continued after the brief recovery stop, walking through a golf course that had posted signs "traverse at your own risk". That gave us pause, but then we saw no golfers, so across the fairway we motored, getting to the far side, to the service road which took us away from the course and down into Painswick.

We are at the Troy House B & B for two nights and our hosts are very nice and accommodating. Dinner reservations are made, they are doing our laundry and there is an honor system for beer and snacks in the quite large room that we have. Arlene is enjoying a well deserved nap and I am not too far from that as well. After the rest day tomorrow, we finish with six straight days of walking. I can imagine that they will be walks to remember.

We have been very weather fortunate so far, but the forecast is not looking quite so accommodating for a dry walk into Bath next Thursday. We shall see.

Dinner tonight.was at the Cardynham Bistro in Painswick. It came highly recommended and it deserves its appraisal. Garlic toast as an appetizer was hot, soft and delicious. The main course of beef stroganoff, the house specialty, was the best I've had in years (we both enjoyed the same thing), and to wrap up the meal, the sticky toffee pudding was truly outstanding. Now to let things settle down as tomorrow arrives too quickly with a full stomach.

      Didn't see the Sheriff!

      29 Juli 2023, Inggris ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We came all this way into Robin Hood country and couldn't find the Sheriff of Nottingham when we needed him. Sharif from Airbnb had to do when we landed up at our DISGUSTING accommodation. I am sure there will be more to tell later!

Dorothy, our 91yr old Porsche driving host, gave us sandwiches for lunch. Bargain. The weather was decent. Great. We rode through Sheepy Magna and happened on signs to a tea shop. A mile up a muddy lane we found the Battlefield Line at Shacklestone. What a museum of railway memorabilia, including a collection of Acme Thunderers (picture included).

Batman got in on the act, though he was a bit stony faced; we passed a gibbet-post (last used in 1807); Heather welcomed us if we cycled carefully; snoozy cygnets blocked our towpath and we passed a dead coal-fired power station.

Travelodge are happy for you to keep your bikes in your room. Well done them!

Sherwood Forest day 65 Tue 26 Jun 2018

      26 Juni 2018, Inggris ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Slept in to 8.45am then ate cereal we carried from London and away by 10.30am. Walked to Nottingham Castle about 2.5 kilometres away. Joined the 11.30am historical walking tour hosted by an accomplished period actor. We learnt that during the life of the original castle it was overthrown once by King Richard who then went on to reclaim his crown from his brother John. This Castle was destroying by the people of Nottingham who were loyal to the King rather than allow Cromwell to have the use of the Fort. Later a Ducal Palace was erected which in turn was destroyed by a mob angry because the owner had helped prevent the introduction of voting for the people. We then toured the underground passageway leading downhill to the Nottingham city centre. The passage was cut through soft conglomerate sandstone with windows that may have been defensive arrow slots on the original Castle. Lunch in England’s oldest inn 1189AD. Walked back to the granny flat in 29 degree heat, and then drove to the Sherwood Forest Visitor’s Centre, Walked all three of the marked trails bringing the day walking distance to over 16.5 kilometres. The Major Oak is believed to be over 1000 years old and there were many other old oaks that were regenerating. The area was full of grey squirrels. I photographed a reddish squirrel on a fence just before we left. Dinner in a pub in nearby town. Then back to Nottingham for wine with Val before returning to the granny flat.Baca selengkapnya
